HEAVY LOAD ELECTRONIC BATTERY TESTER
OPERATOR 'S MANUAL
WARNING
Batteries produce explosive gases and can explode.
Wear safety goggles. (User and bystanders)
Keep flames and sparks away from batteries.
Read and follow instructions.
Battery explosion and ignited gases can cause injury.
WARNING
Battery acid can cause chemical burns.
Wear protective clothing. (User and bystanders)
Chemical burns can cause injury.
SAFETY INFORMATION
Working in the vi c ini t y of l ead-acid battery is DAN GERO US du e to EX PLOSIVE GAS ES generated by the bat tery, these gases c an be igni ted by a s park, c igaret te or flam e and are powerful enough t o blow a battery ap art, forceful ly showering the are a with battery pieces and acid.
To reduce the chance of exploding batteries follow instructions by manufacturers of batteries as well as these instructions. IN CASE OF ACCIDENT RINSE EYES WI TH CLEAN WATER AT LEAST 5 MINUTES AND SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY. NEVER USE EYE DROPS OR OTHER MEDICATION UNLESS DIRECTED BY A DOCTOR. When working around l ead-ac id batt eries wear eye pr otec tion. NEVER smok e, have an open flame or s parks near batte ry. H ave pl enty of vent ilat ion a nd kee p your f ace as far as possible from t he battery. Undercharged lead-ac id batteries will freeze dur ing cold weather. Never test or charge a frozen battery. Do not allow tools to drop onto a battery. Do not lay t ester on battery.
BATTERY LOAD TEST
This test evaluat es the battery's abili ty to crank an engine. The tes ter draws current from the battery whi le measuring it s voltage level. The voltage level of a good battery will remain rel atively steady und er load, but a def ective batt ery will show a r apid loss i n voltage. Battery size (CCA rating) and temperature will affect test results - follow instructions carefully.
1. Turn off engine, accessories and battery test equipment.
1
2. Connect positi ve ( red) c lam p to pos i ti ve (PO S, P , +) batt er y pos t . C onnec t negati ve (black) clamp to t he negative (NEG , N,-) batter y post. "Rock " clamps back and f orth to insure a good electrical connection. For batteries with side terminals, use the side terminal adapters in the clamps.
3. As soon as the tester is connected to the battery, the tester will take a reading of the battery Open Circ uit Voltage (OCV) befor e any load is placed on the batter y. The tester display wi ll flash then show the bat tery voltage (Vb) at that moment . While the voltage is displayed, the tester will be recording the Maximum voltage (Vmax) and Minimum voltage (Vmin) measured. Batteries load test ed in a discharged state (Vb <
12.2 volts), may r esult in an inaccur ate CCA. Attempt to rec harge these batteries and then retest.
NOTE: The 6033 tester uses the bat tery und er t est f or power. I f the bat tery vol tage is
less than 7.5 volts , t he dis pl ay wil l not come on. I f when c onnec t ing t he tes t er, the display does not light up, check for correct polarity hookup. If correct, charge the battery and try again.
4. Press and hold t he load s witch t o place a load on the batt ery. T he test er monitor s the voltage, aft er det erm ini ng the l oad i s no l ong er need ed ( 5 to 10 s ec onds ) t he dis pl ay will flash, indicating to release the load switch. The tester will calculate the battery capacity and begin to cycle through the sequence of four displays (Vb, Vmax, Vmin and CCA).
5. If the battery s tate of charge is too low to calcul ate the CCA or the battery is to small (<100CCA) t hen the test will display “LO” for the CCA.
6. If the load switch is not pressed within 10 seconds after tester connection to battery, the tester will begin to cycle thr ough the display showing the Vb, Vmax and
Vmin. The LED’s under the displ ay indicate which val ue is being displ ayed.
WARNING: THE TOP AND REAR OF TESTER WILL HEAT UP DUE TO LOAD
CURRENT. WITH 12-VOLT BATTERIES ALLOW TESTER TO COOL ONE MINUTE BETWEEN LOAD TESTS - MAXIMUM OF 3 LOAD TESTS IN 15 MINUTE PERIOD. EXCEEDING DUTY CYCLE MAY CAUSE INCORRECT READING AND DAMAGE TO THE UNIT.
TEMPERATURE COMPENSATION FOR BATTERY LOAD TEST
Low temperature has a degrading effect on batteries and wi ll affect test results. The CCA reading will dr op approximat ely 1% for each 2°F th e battery temper ature is below 80°F. for instance a battery at 40°F will read 80% of the actual CCA value. An example: on a batter y at 40°F the tester shows the battery CCA value at 400 so the actual value is 400/ .80 = 500CCA.
CHARGING SYSTEM TEST
This test measur es the output voltage of the alternat or/regulator. Check for under or overcharging - w hich leads to poor bat tery performance and short life.
2
ENGINE SHOULD BE AT NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE
1. Turn off all light s an d acc es s ori es. O perat e en gine at fas t idl e (a ppr o ximately 1500 RPM).
2. Connect tester clamps to battery as described in Step 2 under Battery Load Test. NOTE: If the tester is still connected to the battery from a previous test, it is
necessary to disconnect one of the clamps to reset the tester before performing another test.
3. Do not press the tes ter’s load switch, turn on t he lights, turn on the high beams, and put the blower on hi gh, after about 3 sec t urn off the l ights and blo wer. Chec k the tester dis play will show Vb, Vmax and Vmin. The user can then v erify that these readings ar e wit hi n th e r e com mende d valu es of t h e vehi c le m anuf ac tur er (f or instance normal voltages would be in the range of 13.5 to 14. 4V ). Voltage readings out of the range w ould indicate a bad alter nator, regulator or ci rcuit issue (belts, cable connections).
4. For larger alternat ors the test er load may also b e used for loadi ng the battery a nd alternator. Com par e the t est er readi n gs w it h th e v ehic l e’s r ec ommend ed valu es as in step 3.
If the tester display starts to flash (like under battery load test) leave the loads
(lights and bl ow er) on and disconnect and reconnect the t ester and then turn off t he loads.
STARTER MOTOR TEST
This test identifies excessive starter current draw, which makes starting difficult and shortens battery life.
ENGINE MUST BE AT NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE
1. Perform Battery Load Test. Proceed i f battery is good.
2. Disconnect one tester clamp to reset tester’s circ uit board.
3. Reconnect the tester clamp.
4. Start engine with tester connected t o the battery.
Note: If engine does not start in 5 seconds, release star t switch.
5. The (Vmin) reading wil l be and indi cation of how good the st arter is. (For instance a voltage below 7.2V indicates excessive current draw. This may be due to bad connections or a failing starter motor, or the battery may be too small for the vehicle’s requi rements.
If the voltage to the t est er drops below 6V the unit wi ll r eset. This can be evident if
no voltage drop is s een. For example aft er the vehic le is st arted the Vmin reading is similar to Vb.
