Technical Bulletin 29.06 Revised 10/17/08.
Installation Instructions for Aspen TXV Retrofit Kit
NOTE TO THE INSTALLER: These instructions
are for the use of qualified individuals trained and
experienced in the installation of this type equipment
and related components. Installation and service
personnel are required by some states to be licensed.
Persons not qualified should not install this equipment
nor interpret these instructions. These instructions
must be used only in conjunction with the installation
of the Aspen TXV retrofit kit onto Aspen flowrater
style coils and are intended only to advise and assist
the installer. Read them fully before attempting
retrofit.
WARNING: Improper installation may damage
equipment, create a hazard, and void warranty.
NOTE: Make sure the TXV valve selected is the same
refrigerant type, R22 or R410a, as the outdoor unit.
The stickers applied to the TXV kits are color-coded
(pink for R-410a and green for R-22) to assist with
proper selection of the kit.
DANGER: Be sure to release the nitrogen holding
charge. Pressure may also be released through the
service port if one is present. If no holding charge
pressure is apparent, return coil to the distributor for
exchange.
NOTE: To access the coil components where this
retrofit occurs, it may be necessary to remove the
access panels and slide the coil out of the housing.
INSTALLATION OF TXV
1. Disassemble flowrater body and remove piston
using a small wire or pick. If piston is not removed,
expansion valve will not operate properly.
2. Remove the TXV from box and note the location
of the inlet side (threaded male port) and the outlet
side (female swivel nut port).
3. Taking care that the white teflon seal is still in
place inside the flowrater body, screw the female
swivel nut onto the flowrater body.
4. Remove the additional white teflon seal ring from
the kit box and place on the shoulder just inside the
inlet port. Screw the nut attached to the stub-out
portion of the flowrater body onto the inlet port of the
TXV
5. Tighten all connections taking care to use proper
back-up.
6. Mount TXV sensing bulb using the clamp in kit
box at 4 or 8 o’clock on a horizontal plane of the
suction line circumference on the downstream side of
the coil, or in the case of fan coils, mount bulb a
minimum of 18 inches from the coil. Be sure to fully
insulate. Avoid overheating the sensing bulb during
brazing by removing and re-installing the bulb or
covering it with a wet cloth.
7. Avoid overheating the TXV body during brazing
by pointing the flame away from the valve and
wrapping the valve with a wet cloth.
INSTALLATION OF EQUALIZER TUBE
WHEN SCHRADER VALVE SERVICE PORT IS
PRESENT
1. Locate Schrader valve service port on top of the
suction line manifold
2. Remove dust cap and valve core from Schrader
valve if necessary.
3. Screw flare nut on end of TXV equalizer tube into
Schrader valve using backup wrench. Do not over
tighten.
INSTALLATION OF EQUALIZER TUBE
WHEN NO SCHRADER VALVE SERVICE
PORT IS PRESENT
1. Locate 1/4” process tube on top of the suction line
manifold. (The process tube is the 2” long copper
tube with the crimped and brazed end.)
2. Apply heat to remove process tube.
3. Remove the flare nut from the TXV equalizer tube.
4. Insert TXV equalizer tube approximately 3/8” into
the hole and apply solder to seal.
COIL INSTALLATION
1. Re-assemble access door panels onto coil cabinet if
applicable.
2. Place the pink sticker for R410a applications and
the green sticker for R22 applications adjacent to
Aspen model number on nameplate.
3. Install coil as you would any other from this point.
