Indicators and Controls Description
1
LCD Display
2 x 40 backlit alphanumeric display. Used to display the control menu, faults, and configuration data.
power green Lit only if the unit is receiving DC power from both sources.
processor green Flashes to show that the processor is healthy.
comms green
Lit to indicate communication activity between the main processor and the amplifier units.
Flashes on receipt of a message from an amplifier unit.

LEDs
fault amber
Lit to indicate that the unit has detected a system fault. Flashes if a fault has not yet been accepted.
W X
The left and right arrow keys move the item selection in the direction selected, to the next item in the menu. The selected item is indicated by [brackets] around the selection.
S T
The up and down arrow keys toggle a selection, or increment a number, or a letter of the alphabet when editing.
The rotary encoder acts in the same manner as these keys, and enables faster editing.
SELECT Press after selecting an item to confirm the selection.
BACK
Press after selecting an item to cancel the selection. If pressed repeatedly, this returns the display to the top-level
menu.
DEFAULT
Press to clear previously configured text strings quickly during system configuration, or to return fields to their default values.
FAULT ACCEPT
Accepts all current faults, steadies the flashing fault LED indication, and turns off the audible alarm until a new fault condition occurs.
FAULT CLEAR
Clears all faults and sets all connected equipment to the 'no faults' state, which also cancels any amplifier changeovers in effect. If there are any faults present in the system then they are detected anew, and reported again.
AUDIO MON Selects Audio Monitor sub-menu on the LCD display.

Keys
LAMP TEST
Tests all indicators on the VAR and on all connected amplifier units. The sounder is also tested. The display shows ‘LAMP + SOUNDER TEST’ and the menu locks during this time.
This function is also available from the ‘Tests’ menu.

Rotary Encoder
Multi-function:
An alternative for the S and T arrow keys for fast increment and decrement of menu items.
During Audio Monitoring it also acts as a volume control.

2 Installation
Equipment and Tool Requirements
The VAR4 Router.
Cabling as specified in “External Cabling Requirements” (page 6) to suit your system design.
A small flat-bladed screwdriver.
A pair of wire cutters/strippers.
A soldering iron.
A 19-inch standard rack fitted with supporting rails and wired with DC power supply, signal, and control
wiring, as required by your specific system design.

1) Fire rated equivalent cables such as MICC or Pirelli FP200 should be used for safety critical applications.
2) For EMC compliance:
Screened cables must be used where specified.
All screen tails must be <3 cm.
Refer to BS7671:2008 (Requirements for Electrical Installations) or other appropriate local standards for guidelines on maximum potential cable lengths given the actual installation parameters.

Recommended Installation Procedure

Please read and observe the instructions and guidelines in Section “5 Safety and Precautions” (page 17) prior to installation. Failure to follow these instructions and guidelines may cause personal injury and/or damage to the equipment.
1. Fit the VAR4 into a 19-inch standard equipment rack on supporting rails, and secure the unit in position using the fixing screws and washers provided; see Figure 1.

Ensure that there is at least 1U of ventilated space between the unit and any source of heat (e.g. Amplifier Mainframes).

2. Set the rear-panel EARTH LIFT switch to the ‘grounded’ position (
, ON); see Figure 2.

Only set the EARTH LIFT switch to the ‘ungrounded’ position ( , OFF) if a +ve ground battery supply is used.

3. Ensure that the power supply from the central equipment rack is turned off.
4. Connect the field wiring as required; see Figure 3.
Please refer to Section “3 Connections” (page 9) for pinout details.

5. Connect the dual power supply to the rear panel connectors; see Figure 4.

1) Ensure power supply cabling is adequately rated.
2) Always route power supply cabling away from amplifier input cabling in the equipment rack to reduce the risk of noise pick-up.

Use one of the two methods shown in the dia

ram below to terminate
the cabling in the Wago connectors.
When the screwdriver is removed, the bare end of the wire will be held securely by the contact spring.
To remove the wire, reverse the process.

6. Power the unit on from the central equipment rack.
7. The installation is now complete and ready for system commissioning.

1) PSU1 should come from an ASL Amplifier Mainframe AUX DC SUPPLY OUT terminations. Where possible, two mainframe outputs may be paralleled to feed PSU1 (one from each of two different mainframes) to provide a measure of current sharing and redundancy.
2) PSU2 should come directly from the battery via a fuse or breaker adequate to protect the cable from the potentially dangerous short circuit currents associated with SLA batteries.

2) Internal pull-ups to +24 V enabled on all contacts of the port if none of the contacts of this particular port are configured for routing. If any contacts of the port are configured for routing, the internal pull-ups on all contacts of this particular port are disabled to provide a true volt-free interface.

THIRD ANGLE PROJECTION
1) ASL recommend a rear clearance depth of at least 110 mm for cabling.
A 19-inch standard rack with 600 mm depth provides the required room for installation including the rear cabling.

5 Safety and Precautions
Environmental
Always ensure adequate ventilation is provided for the equipment by fitting 1U ventilation panels above and below the equipment and do not obstruct ventilation holes.

Electrical Safety

Always route power supply cabling away from amplifier input cabling in the equipment rack to reduce the risk of noise pick-up.

ESD Precautions
This product contains static-sensitive devices. Observe ESD precautions when handling this product.
An ESD bonding point is provided on the rear panel of the unit.
EMC
In the close proximity of some radio frequency transmitters, the signal to noise ratio of this product may be reduced. If this occurs, re-location of the equipment or the signal cables is recommended.
Lithium Battery

Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced.
Replace only with the same or equivalent type.
Dispose of battery carefully to avoid environmental damage.
Do not dispose of battery in a fire.
Unpacking and Handling
The equipment should be unpacked and inspected immediately on receipt. If damage has occurred please advise your carrier or supplier.

This equipment contains electronic devices that are sensitive to electrostatic discharge. Please take precautions to avoid damage to the electronics by static electricity.
It is advisable to retain the original equipment packing in the event that the equipment ever needs returning for service.
Ensure that the name and address of the Authorised Distributor from whom you purchased the unit is recorded on the “Service and Warranty” page of this manual for future reference.
Packing for Return for Repair

All electronics assemblies must be properly packed in ESD protective packing for transport, to prevent physical and ESD damage.

The filler material used for packing for return for repair must be antistatic or static dissipative, as this may come into contact with exposed connectors, wiring, or PCB assemblies. The use of non­conductive filler material may cause damage to the electronic assemblies reducing their operational life, or even destroying them.
Advice on packing the product for return can be provided by ASL.

Service and Warranty

This product carries a full warranty. For full details of warranty and service agreements, please contact the Authorised Distributor who supplied the product to you.
Exclusions
The warranty does NOT cover:
1. Customer misuse, including incorrect installation.
2. Damage other than manufacturing defects.
3. Transit / Courier damage.
4. Incorrect voltage or power supply used.
5. Incorrect input signal.
6. Abnormal environmental operating conditions.
7. Damage incurred by accident, fire, lightning or other hazard.
8. Modification to the unit or inexpert / attempted repair.
9. No fault found – where no fault can be found after extensive testing, indicating user error or failure in ancillary equipment.
10. Electronic assemblies which are improperly packed when returned for repair or service.
Should any of the above apply, Application Solutions (Safety and Security) Limited reserves the right to raise any relevant charges to the customer.
Application Solutions (Safety and Security) Limited shall not be liable for any indirect, special or consequential loss or damage (including without limitation any loss of profits) arising from the use of this product or for any breach of this warranty.
In the interest of continual product development, Application Solutions (Safety and Security) Limited reserves the right to make changes to product specification without notice or liability.
