SOFTWARE UPDATE

The AndroidTM operating system (the system that runs your device) is periodically updated to bring new features, improvements and bug fixes. There are two main ways to update your product’s software: directly on your ARCHOS if your device can connect to a WiFi network (Settings>About tablet>Firmware update), or with a computer (www.archos.com/firmware).

STARTING UP

Charging the Battery

Before using your ARCHOS for the first time, completely charge the battery:

Connect the supplied USB cable to the ARCHOS and to the supplied USB power adapter. Plug the USB power adapter into a wall

outlet (Flash Model).

IMPORTANT: Use only the included USB cable to charge your device. Do not expect your device to charge properly when con-

nected to your computer. OR Connect the supplied power cable to the ARCHOS and to a wall outlet (HDD Model).

The ARCHOS device will turn on and start charging. The charging indicator light is on when the battery is charging. It will blink when the battery is charged.

IMPORTANT: When the battery is completely empty and you plug in your device, the charging indicator light will turn on then start to blink. The indicator light blinking rapidly means that the device is charging but does not yet have enough power to start. This charging when off may take some time. Once the device has charged enough to start, it will switch on and display the ARCHOS

boot logo.

Transferring files to your ARCHOS

For Windows: note that the below procedure requires at least Windows XP and Windows Media Player 11.

1.Connect your tablet to your computer using the USB cable. Your device is automatically detected. It appears as an icon on “My Computer”.

2.You can transfer your media files to the ARCHOS by copy/pasting them into the respective folders.

3.Once all your file transfers are finished, close any program that may have read or written to the ARCHOS.

4.You can now unplug the USB cable. For Macintosh: You first need to install the free Android File Transfer application (not included). Download from http://www.android.com/filetransfer. For Linux: You need to install MTP tools (not included).

CONNECTING TO A WIFI NETWORK

You need to be in a WiFi zone that will allow you to connect to it. Every time the ARCHOS is in range of a network that you have already configured once, it will attempt to make a connection.

To configure a new WiFi network, go on the Home screen, touch the Settings icon.

In the Settings screen, select Wireless & networks.

If the WiFi is off, touch the Wi-Fi line to turn it on.

Then select Wi-Fi settings. The ARCHOS will scan for available WiFi networks and display them at the bottom of the screen.

Touch the network you want to connect to.

Enter the required network information*, and touch Connect.

We recommend that you select Show password, to be able to see the characters you are typing.

Your ARCHOS will now establish a connection to that WiFi access point.

* For free access WiFi points, there is no need to enter any special information. For secured networks, you will need either a key (a series of numbers and/or letters) of the type WEP, WPA, or WPA2. Check with the Internet service provider to obtain the exact connection parameters.

From the system bar, you can access the Wi-Fi settings quickly.

1. Touch the time in the system bar.

2. Touch the status icons.

3. Touch Wi-Fi to open the Wi-Fi settings.

Remove the Archos G9 3G stick cap, and push

the unmarked side of the case towards the plug.

Insert the SIM card into its slot and put back the case.

Make sure to insert the SIM card properly.

Remove the marked case “ARCHOS”.

On your ARCHOS device, remove the protective cover of

the 3G stick slot.

Plug the Archos G9 3G stick. The device is automatically detected.

Follow the on-screen instructions.

CONNECTING TO A 3G NETWORK

Your ARCHOS device is equipped with a slot on its back for the tailor-made ARCHOS G9 3G stick. Only the Archos G9 3G stick is designed to fit this slot. There is no compatibility with other 3G sticks. Note that the ARCHOS G9 3G stick will only have signal if you are in an area covered by your 3G provider’s 3G or EDGE network.

The extended Home screen: Slide your finger horizontally on the screen to navigate between the 5 panels of the extended Home

screen.

Widgets

Widgets are miniature apps that you can place on your Home screens. Some widgets are standalone applications, some open a related application when you touch them, and others provide a subset of useful information or controls for their related applications. Stock widgets include a clock, a picture frame, a calendar that shows upcoming appointments, and so on.

Add an item to a Home screen

1. Open the Home screen where you want to add the item.

2. Touch the Customize button at the top-right of the screen.

3. Touch the category of item you want to add. If there are no empty spots on the Home screen, Add is dimmed; you must delete or move an item before you can add another item, or switch to another Home screen.

4. In the menu that opens, touch the tab for the category of item you want to add. Widgets, App shortcuts, Wallpapers, More ...

Menu button

When you open Android applications ( Music, Files, Books, etc.), a menu bar is displayed. Press the Menu button to display options available for the current screen. The other options of the menu bar differ from one application to another.

Recent Apps

1. Press the Recent Apps button. It displays a list of thumbnail images of applications you have opened recently.

2. Touch a thumbnail to open the corresponding application.

TOUCHSCREEN CALIBRATION

When touchscreen functioning is impaired, you can recalibrate it.

- If you can access the Android interface

1. In the device homescreen, touch Settings.

2. In the Settings screen, touch Repair & Formatting at the bottom of the menu list.

3. In the Repair & Formatting screen, touch Touchscreen Calibration. A message will tell you to put your ARCHOS down.

4. Putthedeviceonaatsurface.

5. Touch Calibrate the touchscreen.

1. When turning on the device, hold down and press . The ARCHOS Recovery screen is displayed. Use to switch between options and to validate your selection.

2. Select Repair system and press .

3. In the Repair system screen, select Force touchscreen calibration and press .

4. Press againtoconrm.Andputyourproductonaatsurface.

5. At the end of the calibration, press . The ARCHOS Recovery screen is displayed.

6. Select No. Your device will reboot. The touchscreen is now recalibrated.

This product is equipped with a Lithium-Ion battery. Do not pierce, open, disassemble it, or use it in a humid and/or corrosive environment. Do not put,

store or leave your product in or near sources of heat, in direct strong sunlight, in a high temperature location, in a pressurized container or in a microwave

oven. Do not expose it to temperatures over 60 C (140 F). If the battery leaks and you come into contact with the leaked ﬂ uids, rinse thoroughly with water

and seek medical attention immediately. Failure to follow these instructions could cause the Lithium-Ion battery to leak acid, become hot, explode or ignite

OPTIMISING BATTERY PERFORMANCE

WARNINGS AND SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

• Do not leave your battery charging for more than one week. Doing so runs the risk of overcharging the battery and shortening its total life span.

• If the device is not used for an extended period of time, the battery will slowly discharge and the device will need to be recharged before using again.

• Unplug the charger from the wall when it is not being used.

• Use only an ARCHOS battery in the device.

DEVICE TYPE SPECIFICS

The Archos 5g or Archos device equipped with wireless cellular connectivity (including with accessories) can be considered in the class of devices as a

portable “Telephone”. That is, it uses the same frequencies and technologies as mobile telephones. All regulations and speciﬁ c instructions relating to

mobile phone usage are thus to be applied to these Archos devices.

CAUTION

To prevent risks of electric shock, this unit must only be opened by qualiﬁ ed service personnel.

Power off and disconnect the power supply cable before opening the unit.

WARNING

To prevent ﬁ re or shock hazard, do not expose the unit to rain or moisture.

Do not use your ARCHOS at gas stations or near chemical or combustible products. Shut off your ARCHOS wherever signs for turning off telephones

are shown. The ARCHOS 5g (or an ARCHOS equipped with cellular wireless connectivity) could cause an explosion or ﬁ re if you are in an enclosed area,

a storage area for fuels and chemical products, or a transport area for ﬂ ammable materials. Never transport or store your ARCHOS, its components, or

accessories in the same container as ﬂ ammable liquids, gas, or explosive materials.

Respect all warnings and all security instructions

All regulations concerning the use of cellular phone technology must be adhered to when using the ARCHOS 5g (or an ARCHOS equipped with cellular

wireless connectivity).

Use only accessories that are ARCHOS branded or certiﬁ ed by ARCHOS

The use of incompatible accessories with the ARCHOS can cause injury.

Shut off your ARCHOS 5g (or ARCHOS equipped with cellular wireless connectivity) completely whenever in proximity to medical equipment

Your device could cause interference with medical equipment in hospitals or care giving centers. Respect the insructions and warnings from the personel

of the establishment.

When on board an airplane, shut off your ARCHOS completely or disactivate the 3G telephony features

Shut off your ARCHOS 5g (or ARCHOS equipped with cellular wireless connectivity) completely or deactivate the cellular functionality when on board

and airplane. Your device contains a radio receiver/transmitter. You are thus always required to deactivate the radio functions since the use of portable

telephones (cellular phones) is prohibited in airplanes, whether the device is connected or not.

Handle your ARCHOS with care

• Keep your product away from any sources of humidity. This can seriously damage the device. Do not manipulate your ARCHOS device with wet hands.

Any damage done to the device due to its contact with water void your guaranty.

• Do not use or store your product in an area that is dusty or dirty. This can deteriorate the components in your device.

• Your ARCHOS device is a complex electronic product. Keep it protected from falls and physical shock. Do not subject it to violent movements.

• Do not paint your product. Doing so could make movable parts unusable and reduce or limit its functionality.

• Other products that create a magnetic ﬁ eld could hamper the functionality of your ARCHOS and its SIM card (if the device uses such technology). Do not

use protective covers or cases that have magnetic closures. Do not allow your ARCHOS device to stay in prolonged contact with electromagnetic ﬁ elds.

Only ARCHOS certiﬁ ed technicians are qualiﬁ ed to repair your ARCHOS device

In calling upon non qualiﬁ ed persons to repair your ARCHOS product, you run the risk of damaging your device and voiding your guaranty.

Avoid interference with other electronic products

Your ARCHOS device radiates radio frequency (RF) signals that could interfere with the functioning of other electronic devices that are insufﬁ ciently or

INFORMATION ABOUT SAR (SPECIFIC ABSORBTION RATE) CERTIFICATION

• CHILD PROTECTION: Keep the device away from children. Do not allow children to play with this device. They can hurt themselves or others with this

device as well as damage it.

• Only connect a charger/adapter to the proscribed electrical source. Use ONLY the ARCHOS charger/adapter designed for the speciﬁ c product.

Your device conforms to the limits established by the independant ICNIRP (International Commission on non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) for the

absorption of RF (Radio Frequency) energy to the human body. That is to say, the energy emitted by radio and telecommunication equipment. The

recommendations of this organization are that a safe maximal amount of SAR is 2.0 watts per kilogram of tissue. In normal conditions, the SAR of an

ARCHOS device equipped with cellular telecommunications modules, such as the ARCHOS 5g, has a SAR of 1.23 watts per kilogram of tissue. The
