INTRODUCTION
AOpen 10/100Mbps SOHO Hubs give users a simple, cost effective and reliable solution that upgrades network performance. With 10/100Mbps plug-and-play dual speed ports equipped in its compact size, it is possible to achieve the coexistence of 10Mbps and 100Mbps devices in a single network now and step to 100Mbps network in the future. Network expansion is made easy with the uplink port, used for connecting to another 10/100Mbps hub, located on the front panel. Each port supports NWAY function.
With its compact size, lightweight and sleek design, the AOpen SOHO Hub can easily be placed on a desktop and installed. Furthermore, it provides Power/Collision/100M and Link/Activity LED indicators for simplified management.
Features
Key features are:
5/8-port 10/100Mbps SOHO Hub
Compatible with the IEEE 802.3 10BASE-T
Ethernet and IEEE 802.3u 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet industry standards.
With built-in switch function, it automatically transfers packets between 10Mbps and 100Mbps
3
connections.
LED indicators for power, 10Mbps collision, 100Mbps collision, 10M Link/Activity, 100M Link/Activity and expansion port full-duplex status.
Bridge Uplink port for easy expansion, which supports uplink distance up to 100 meters.
External AC power adapter.
HARDWARE DESCRIPTION
This section identifies all the major external components of the hub. Both the front and rear panels are shown,
4
followed by a description of each panel feature. The indicator panel is described in detail in the next chapter.
Front Panel
The figure below shows the front panels of the Hub.
AOH-605 5-port SOHO 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet Hub
AOH-608 8-port SOHO 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet Hub
LED Indicator Panel
Refer to the LED Indicator section for detailed
information about each of the hub’ s LED indicators.

Rear Panel
AOH-605 5-port SOHO 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet Hub
AOH-608 8-port SOHO 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet Hub
DC Power Jack: Power is supplied through an external AC power adapter. Check the technical specification section for information about the AC power input voltage.
MDI-X Jacks: Use these jacks to connect stations to the hub. These are MDI-X (MediumDependent Interface, Cross-wired) jacks, which mean, you can use ordinary straight-through twisted-pair cables to connect user machines and servers to the hub through them. If you need to connect another device with an MDI-X jack, such as another hub or an Ethernet switch, you should use a crossover cable, or make the connection
6
using the MDI-II jack (described below).
Uplink Jack(s) (MDI-II): Use this jack to connect stations to the hub. This is MDI-II (Mediumdependent Interface, straight-wired) jack, which means you can connect the hub to a device with a MDI-X port using an ordinary straight-through cable.
LED Indicators
AOH-605 5-port SOHO 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet Hub
AOH-608 8-port SOHO 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet Hub
Power Indicator (PWR)
When this indicator lights green, the hub is receiving
power, otherwise. it is off.
Expansion switch port full duplex status (EXP- FDX)
7
When this indicator lights green, the expansion switch
port active on full-duplex mode.
100M Collision (COL 100M)
This indicator indicates there is data collisions on the
respective 100Mbps Fast Ethernet segments of the hub. Whenever a collision is detected, this COL 100M indicator will briefly blink amber.
10M Collision (COL 10M)
This indicator indicates data collisions on the
respective 10Mbps Ethernet segments of the hub. Whenever a collision is detected, this COL 10M indicator will briefly blink amber.
Note. Since collisions occur frequently on a network
with many nods, the LED flashes more rapidly as the number of users or network traffic increases.
10M Link/Activity (Link/Act. 10M)
When this indicator lights green, the port is connected
to a 10Mbps Ethernet card or hub. When the LED is blinking green, it indicates the data is receiving/sending from the network and is processed by the hub. If the LED does not light on, It means the cable link is not established or the port is connected to a 100Mbps Ethernet card or hub.
100M Link/Activity (Link/Act. 100M)
When this indicator lights green, the port is connected to a 100Mbps Ethernet card or hub. When the LED is blinking green, it indicates the data is
8
receiving/sending from the network and is processed by the hub. If the LED does not light on, It means the cable link is not established or the port is connected to a 10Mbps Ethernet card or hub.
9
MAKING CONNECTIONS
This chapter discusses how to connect end nodes, and uplink two hubs together.
Connecting to computers
After the hub is properly installed, it can support up to five/eight computers.
1. Insert one end of the UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) Category 5 cable into the RJ-45 connector that is numbered from 1 to 8 of AOH-608 (or 1 to 5 of AOH-
605). Please orient the cable correctly and push it into the connector until you hear a click.
2. Please make sure that the maximum length of the cable from your computer to the hub does not exceed 100 meters.
3. After connecting to the hub, please check if the Link LEDs on the adapter card and the hub (Link/Act) are lit up.
10
Connecting to Hub or Switch
The hubs are only connected by uplink port
1. Plug on end of the UTP Category 5 Cable connector into the Uplink port of the first hub.
2. Plug the other end into the ordinary port of the second hub.
Note. Crossover cable is not necessary in establishing uplink connection through uplink port.
It is important to know that the uplink port of AOpen SOHO Hub with a SWITCH port. You can use this uplink port connect two hubs together with maximum distance up to 100 meters. It also support bridge function, which provides scalable network expansion (unlimited expandability!!)
