Ampex quad data cartridges are designed to meet the most
demanding mass storage applications. The formulation and
process have been developed to produce a tape with
exceptional performance characteristics and consistency to
deliver cost-effective and reliable data storage.
Optimized for Ampex Quad Drives
Ampex data cartridges are critical for error free data storage for DST and DIS (DD-2 format) tape drives. Specifically, they provide precise integration of the tape into the drive, allowing the drive to fully realize optimum performance. For example, the drive capstan and air lubricated guides, in combination with the tape and cartridge mechanical design provide the proper margins in data exchange; the drive’s magnetic heads are designed and manufactured to develop the maximum output and highest signal response possible from a stable tape source that is both mechanically smooth and precise. These combined features provide superior performance and dependability.
Lower Head Wear
Head wear must be balanced between head life and sufficient abrasivity to prevent possible debris build-up on the head. Ampex tapes are pre-conditioned before being loaded into a cartridge to assure a minimum level of debris inside the cartridge and to deliver stable low head wear for longer head life, while still providing excellent self-cleaning characteristics.
Improved Tape Cartridge
Cartridge assemblies are precision manufactured using materials specially selected to provide dimensional integrity, durability and operational reliability. Ampex cartridge shells employ high impact, anti-static plastics to protect valuable data against shock and transient debris. Ampex cartridge spools are molded from a high-performance plastic blend to provide stability and strength for smooth tape handling. Even the springs used in Ampex data cartridges have been chosen to withstand extensive use in library environments.

Operating Environment
Temperature range 10˚–30˚C (50˚–86˚F)
Humidity range 30–70%, non-condensing
Store and use tape in an environment with correct temperature and humidity. Metal particle tapes have excellent stability and magnetization loss is negligible. These conditions are suitable for short-term archival storage. It is recommended that long term archival (>10 years) storage temperature and humidity be 10˚C (50˚F) and less than 40% relative humidity. Allow eight hours for tapes to condition themselves when brought in from a storage environment of different temperature and humidity. Always store and use tape in the cleanest environment possible away from magnetic fields. For more information on the archivability of DST/DIS media, please contact Ampex at the number below.
