The new DST 914 automated cartridge library system utilizes uncompressed 300 GB DST media cartridges to provide industry leading storage capacity, performance, and scalability designed with the reliability and flexibility needed to meet the growing requirements for fast-access mass storage.

The performance of the DST 914 quad density library is unrivaled by any other library system on the market. The fast robotics mount operation of 10 seconds, combined with a search rate of 2700MB/second, provides a total average access time for any file within the library of less than 60 seconds. The data transfer rate is up to 20MB/second per drive, with one or two high-performance DST drives per system. Each drive has its own Ultra-SCSI data path, producing an aggregate transfer rate of up to 40MB/second for the library. The cartridge design eliminates the need for a gripping mechanism, allowing the robotics to achieve unmatched performance and reliability.

A stand-alone DST 914 library can hold 87 300GB DST tape cartridges, putting a total storage capacity of up to 26.1 terabytes per library online in less than 8 square feet of floor space. By using the cartridge partitioning feature in the DD-2 tape format, the library storage capacity can appear as over 93,600 200MB logical volumes to the host server.

The system’s scalability provides over 100 TB utilizing a single transfer rail with four DST 914 cabinets. By stringing together multiple clusters almost unlimited capacity can be achieved. Additional drives can be added to dramatically increase I/O capability.

DST 914 Library Extension Unit

Short transfer rail allows the addition of up to two extension cabinets and additional drives can be added to increase I/O capability.

Long transfer rail allows the addition of up to three extension cabinets. Multiple clusters of libraries and extensions can be configured for almost unlimited capacity.
