DST 714
Quad Density
Scalable Automated Cartridge Library System
The DST714 quad density automated cartridge library
system is a scalable system designed with the performance
and flexibility needed to meet the growing requirements for
fast-access mass storage.
Applications include online storage, sequential
tape processing, backup, and archiving in computing
environments spanning everything from digital television to
scientific simulations, data warehousing and commercial
data processing.
DST 714 Library
• Up to 11.6 terabyte capacity in only 7.5
square feet of floor space
• One or two DST drives, each with
independent Ultra-SCSI data paths
• Aggregate sustained data rate up to
40MB/second
• Robotic performance of 400 cartridge
exchanges per hour
• 20 seconds average access time to any file
• Fully automated archive, backup and
recovery
• Read compatible with ER90 “D2C”
cartridges and with single and double
density DST/DIS cartridges
Library Extension Units
• Short transfer rail expands system up
to 34.4TB
• Long transfer rail expands system up
to 46.4TB
• Multiple cluster configurations create
almost unlimited storage capacity
The performance of the DST 714 quad density library is unrivaled by
any other library system on the market. The fast robotics mount
operation of 10 seconds, combined with a search rate of 2700MB/second, provides a total average access time for any file within the library
in less than 20 seconds. The data transfer rate is up to 20MB/second
per drive, with one or two high-performance DST drives per system.
Each drive has its own Ultra-SCSI data path, producing an aggregate
transfer rate of up to 40MB/second for the library. The cartridge
design eliminates the need for a gripping mechanism, allowing the
robotics to achieve unmatched performance and reliability.
A stand-alone DST 714 library can hold 116 100GB DST tape
cartridges, putting a total storage capacity of up to 11.6 terabytes per
library online in only 7.5 square feet of floor space. By using the
cartridge partitioning feature in the DD-2 tape format, the library
storage capacity can appear as over 41,600 200MB logical volumes
to the host server. The 100GB tape capacity also serves to increase the
system’s productivity.
The system’s scalability provides over 46TB utilizing a single transfer
rail with four DST 714 cabinets. By stringing together multiple
clusters almost unlimited capacity can be achieved. Additional drives
can be added to dramatically increase I/O capability.
Ampex works with leading software companies to provide backup
and recovery, archiving and HSM applications for the DST 714 library.
