Ampex DCRSI-120 Brochure

Page 1
The DCRsi 120 recorder is a one-inch, transverse scan, rotary digital recorder capable of recording data at any user data rate from 0 to 120 Mbits/sec.
Our continuing field experience with hundreds of applications for DCRsi recorders has resulted in the incorporation of additional product enhancements which further increase the power and flexibility of the DCRsi 120 recorder.
The DCRsi 120 recorder is fully format and interface compatible with all models in the DCRsi product family.
DCRsi 120
Digital Cartridge Recording System
Variable Data Rate
The DCRsi 120 recorder is equipped with a fully integrated internal memory buffer which provides total isolation between the user interface and the instantaneous timing demands of the tape transport. Via this front-end buffer, the DCRsi recorder will unconditionally follow the user’s data clock — any data rate from zero up to 120 Mbits/sec can be recorded or played back either continuously, in bursts, or while fluctuating at any slew rate. Instant-on record capability provides for event capture without time lag associated with tape speed lock-up. No operator adjustments are required as the data rate changes. The DCRsi recorder is the only high data rate, high capacity recorder which completely emulates a solid state FIFO memory. The system is a slave to user interface equipment, thus simplifying the task facing the data and control interface designer.
The Transport
The DCRsi 120 recorder utilizes a field-proven transverse-scanning tape transport design, featuring mechanical simplicity, compact size and a short, co-planar tape path which all adds up to a rugged and reliable unit. The front loading/unloading of the tape cartridge is done instantly, simply and reliably because there are no elevators or other complex mechanisms used to transport the cartridge. The compact transverse scanner assembly contains six azimuth record/reproduce heads. The scanner assembly is self contained and is easily replaceable in the field with a typical head life exceeding 3,000 head-to-tape hours
Hardware Configurations
The DCRsi 120 recorder is available in a two-module ruggedized configuration and a single-unit rack mount configuration. Furthermore the two module configuration is available with a pressurized or non-pressurized tape transport module.
Data Addressing
Data, as recorded on the DCRsi cartridge, is organized into discrete blocks, each assigned a unique address number and time stamp as it arrives at the recorder interface.
Low Life Cycle Costs
Extremely low life cycle costs result from the extremely low head wear (over 3,000 hours of head-to-tape contact), hands-off operation and tremendous tape cost savings when compared to longitudinal HDDR recorders.
The Cartridge
The rugged 50 GByte-capacity DCRsi tape cartridge is made of fiber reinforced polycarbonate. The 2.5 pound cartridge is flame retardant, UV resistant, non-toxic, with high impact strength. Tape durability is conservatively rated at more than 200 passes.
Applications
The DCRsi recorder family is the most versatile high speed data collection and replay equipment available. DCRsi recorders can be found wherever high performance recording is required, even in less than ideal environments, including the following applications - ASW, flight testing, remote sensing and test range instrumentation. The DCRsi 120 recorder sets the new high performance standard for interface versatility, ease of use, maintainability, size, weight, power and performance.
