1. CAPABIL ITIES AND LI MI TATIONS OF SMOKE ALARMS
American Sensors smoke alarms are designed to provi de early warning of fire and smoke at reasonable cost. Earl y warning can mean the difference between a safe escape and no escape at all. While smoke al arms can provide i nv aluable protection for you and your family, they do have limitations.
€ Smoke alarms cannot work without power. Battery operated
alarms will not work without proper batteries, with dead batteries or if batteri es are not properly installed. AC powered alarms will not work i f their AC power supply is cut off by an el ectrical fi r e, an open fuse, a circuit breaker or any other reason. I f you are concerned about the rel iabil ity of either batteri es or your AC power supply for any of the above reasons, you should instal l in your home both A C and battery powered smoke al arms for added security. American Sensors also offers the S A 379 model which is AC powered with battery back-up.
€ Smoke alarms are i ncapable of sounding the alar m until smoke
reaches the sensing chamber. Anything preventing smoke from reachi ng the alarm may delay or prevent an alarm. A smoke alarm cannot detect fi re i n the walls, chimney or roof unless and until a significant amount of smoke reaches the alarm. A closed door may prevent smoke from reaching an alarm on the other side of the door. A smoke alarm may not sense a fire on another floor of a home. For example, a basement smoke alarm may not detect a fire which started on the fi rst or second floor.
€ Smoke alarms may not be hear d. The loudness of the horn in
your alarm meets current standards. However, the sound may be blocked by distance, closed doors, or ambient noise such as traffi c or a stereo. Smoke alarms may not be heard by persons who are hard of hearing. For these reasons, a smoke alar m should be install ed in ever y room or at least on every level of your home. American Sensors recommends that hardwire A C Powered smoke alarms be interconnected, so that one alarm wil l trigger all other alarms to sound their alarms.
€ Smoke alarms are not fool- proof. Smoke alarms may not always
sense every kind of fire. T hey cannot be expected to sense fires caused by carelessness or by safety hazards. T hey may not give earl y warning of fast growing fires caused by smoking in bed, violent explosions, escaping gas, i mproper storage of flammabl e materials, overloaded electrical circuits, natural causes such as li ghtning, children playing with matches, or arson.
€ Smoke alarms are not substitutes f or property, disability, li f e or
other insur ance of any k i n d. Home owners and renters should continue to i nsure t heir lives and property. Consult your insurance agent.
€ Smoke alarms have li mited li v es. One or more of the many
components could fail at any ti me. Therefore, test your smoke alarm weekly. C lean and take care of it as described in this manual. Repai r or replace the smoke al arm when i t fails to test properly. Your smoke alarm should be replaced if i t is ten years old.
A photoelectronic smoke alarm senses smoke using an electronic photo receptor to sense the scattering of l ight by smoke particl es.
2. S AFETY TIPS
Properly i nstalled and maintained smoke alarms are an essential part of a good home fire safety program. Your f ire safety progr am should also incl ude a review of f i re hazar ds and the elimination of dangerous conditions whenever possible. Consi der the fol lowing tips:
€ U se smoking materials properly. Never smoke in bed. € K eep matches and ci garette lighters away from children. € Store flammable materials i n proper containers. Never use them
near an open fl ame or sparks.
€ K eep electrical appliances in good condition. Do not overload
electrical circuits.
€ K eep stoves, fi replaces, chi mneys, and barbecue gril ls grease free.
M ake sure they are properly installed and away from any combustible materials.
€ K eep portable heaters and open flames such as candles away from
combustible material. € Do not allow rubbish to accumulate. € K eep a supply of ex tra batteri es on hand for your battery powered
smoke alarms. € Do not stand too close to the alarm when the uni t is in al arm as the
loud horn could damage your hearing. Never disconnect the battery or the AC power on any type of smoke
alarm to sil ence a nuisance alarm. Clear the area of smoke by openi ng doors and windows or fanning the smoke away.
M ost important, when fire strikes, a prepared and practiced escape plan can make the diff erence between life and death. D evelop an escape plan and practice it with the entir e f amily, incl uding small chi l dren.
€ Ensure all family members are famil iarized with the alarm signal. € Prepare an escape plan. Draw a F loor P lan of Your Home and
determi ne two ex i ts from each room. T here should be a way to get
out of each bedroom without opening the door. € H ave Fi re D rill s Often. Practice your Escape and BE PREPA RED. € Decide on a meeting pl ace at a safe distance from your home.
IN CASE OF FI RE
€ Don•t waste time collecting possessi ons after a fi re starts. € Arouse all occupants and leave th e building. Your most valuable
possession is your l ife. € Doors can mean escape or death. Never open doors without fi rst
checking for heat. T est them with your hands, i f they feel warm, fire
may be walled up behind them - l eave closed and find another
escape route. € C al l the fire department from OUTS ID E the building. € If t rapped inside, stay close to the floor, cover mouth with cl oth,
conserve breath as you crawl to safety. € K eep all doors and windows cl osed except for escape purposes. € N EVE R r e-enter a burning building. € K eep your famil y in a pre-arranged meeti ng place after your escape. Your local fire department may be able to offer you additional ideas
for safety and escape plans in the home.
3a. WHER E TO L OCATE SMOKE ALARMS
As a mini mum, smoke alarms should be located between sleeping areas and potential sources of fire such as a kitchen, heated garage or basement. In single storey homes wi th one sleeping area, an alarm should be i nstalled in the hall way outside the bedrooms (see Fi gure
1) . In single storey homes with two separate sleeping areas, a minimum of two al arms are required, one outside each sleeping area ( see F igure 2). In multi-level or split-level homes, as a minimum, an alarm should be installed outside each sleeping area, i n the basement and at every level of the home ( see F igure 3).
€ In every room of your home (except the bathroom): Research
indicates that substantial increases in warning time can be obtained
with each properly i nstalled, additional alarm. € In bedrooms: In anticipation of fires originating withi n t hese rooms,
caused by faulty wiri ng, lamps, appliances, smoki ng or other hazards. € In hallways: At a distance no greater than 13 feet (4 meters) from
the farthest wall and no greater than 26 feet (8 meters) from the
next alarm. € In the center of a room or hallway: As it is impossible to predict the
source of a fi re. If it is necessary to place the alarm on a wall, always
locate the top of the smoke alarm 4-6 inches ( 10-15 cm) from the
ceiling. € As needed: T o compensate for cl osed doors and other obstacl es that
may i nterfere with the path of smoke to an alarm. T hey may also
prevent occupants on one si de of a closed door from hearing a alarm
on the other side of the door. € Model SA360 - Professi onal Multi-Location model can be located
in any area of the home.
REA D •CAPABILITIES AND LIMITATIO NS OF S MOKE ALARMSŽ i n Section 1 of this manual. Your local fire department or insurance company may be able t o give you further advice on the best smoke alarm l ocations in your home. Call them and ask.
T here are two different types of smoke alarm technology curr ently i n general use: i onization and photoelectronic. Whi l e both ty pes of technology are suitable for general residential u se, an ionization alar m wil l normally r espond faster to f ast f l aming fir es, whi le a photoelectronic alar m may be more sensitive to detecting slow smolderi ng fi res. Because home f ir es develop in different ways and are often unpredictable i n their growth, i t is impossible to predict which type of alarm will provide the earliest warning. For best home protection install at least one photoelectronic and one ionization smoke alarm on each level of your home. Model SA 360 is an ionization type smoke alarm.

3b. WHER E TO L OCATE SMOKE ALARMS I N MOBILE HOMES
NOT E: Power supply must be 12 0 Volts A C for model SA 360. I n mobi le homes built after 1978 locate the smoke alarm as described above.
O l der mobile homes may have li ttle or no i nsulation compared to the ones buil t post 1978. These uninsulated exteri ors can disrupt airflow around the smoke alarm in hotter or colder weather. Locate the alarm only on interior walls 4Ž to 6Ž (10 to 15 cm) from ceiling
1. if you own an older mobile home or 2. if you noti ce the exterior walls and/or ceil ing are noticeably cold or warm or 3. i f you are uncertain about the quali ty of i nsulation.
Regardless of the age of the mobile home, locate alarms throughout to ensure maximum protecti on. F oll ow the location instructi ons in this manual.
4. NFPA RECOMMENDATIONS
For your inf ormation, the National Fire Protection A ssociation•s Standard 72 reads as follows:
2-2.1.1.1
Smoke alarms shall be instal led outside of each separate sleeping
area i n the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms and on each additional storey of the family li v ing unit, including basements and excluding crawl spaces and unfinished attics. In new construction a smoke alarm also shall be installed in each sl eeping room.
A-2.5. 2.1 Smoke Detection- Are More Smoke Alarms Desirable? T he
required number of smoke alarms might not provide reliable earl y warni ng protection for those areas separated by a door from the areas protected by the required smoke alarms. For this reason, it is recommended that the householder consider the use of additional smoke alarms for those areas for increased protection. T he additional areas include the basement, bedrooms, dining room, furnace room, utility room, and hallways not protected by the required smoke alarms. T he i nstallation of smoke alarms in kitchens, attics (finished or unfinished), or garages is not normall y recommended, as these locations occasi onally experience conditions that can result in i mproper operation.
5. LOCATIONS TO AVOID
Avoid locations where smoke may not r each the alarm i n time to provide early warning, or where the alarm may not be effective.
DO NOT P LA C E SMO K E ALA RMS: € I n turbulent air from fans, doors, windows, etc. The rapid ai r
movement may prevent combustion parti cl es from entering the alarm.
€ I n dead ai r spaces such as at the peak of an • A Ž frame ceil ing.
• Dead airŽ at the top may prevent smoke from reaching the alarm in t i me to provide earl y warning. In rooms with simpl e sloped, peaked or gabled ceil ings, install smoke alarms on the ceiling 3 feet (90 cm) from the highest poi nt of the ceili ng. Note: F or complex ceiling structures, consult a safety expert for the number of alarms requi red and the best locations.
€ I n very hot or cold ar eas where the temperature exceeds 1000F
(380C) or falls bel ow 400F (50C).
€ Less than 6 inches (15 cm) from the wall when mounted on the
ceiling.
Nuisance alarms could resul t when smoke alarms are located where interference may occur wi th the sensing chamber. T o avoi d nuisance alarms, DO N OT place smoke alar ms:
€ I n high humidity ar eas such as bathrooms and attics. Pl ace smoke
alarms at least 10 feet (3 meters) away from bathrooms. € I n insect-inf ested ar eas. € I n poorly ventilated kitchens or garages. € I n very dusty and dirty areas. € N ear fluor escent li ghts. Place smoke alarms at least 5 feet ( 1.5 meters) from fluorescent l ights.
Thi s smoke alarm is suitable for residential use. It i s not to be connected to a commercial or industrial fi re alarm panel.
6. I NSTALLATION AND TESTI NG
Thi s model has an optional Locking Key to better secure the al arm to inhibit unauthorized removal. If securi ng the alarm is a concern, remove and save the •Locking KeyŽ from the back plate wi th n eedle nosed pli ers before install ing the alarm. S ee point 12 in this section for more details on this feature.
