800/900 Series
High Frequency Drivers
802D 909-8A
Altec Lansing has manufactured high frequency compression drivers since the
early 1940’s. A traditional 1” driver, the model 800/900 drivers have 1.75” voicecoils* and can reproduce frequencies up to 20kHz. When installed on medium and
larger horns, they can also reproduce down to 500Hz. Adapters once were
available to install these drivers on horns with 1.4” and 2” throats. All models of
the 604 and 800/900 series Altec Lansing drivers have interchangeable 1.75"
voice-coil diaphragm assemblies. The early 604's and all 800 series drivers are an
Alnico motor (above left). The 604-8K and the 900 series drivers are a ceramic
motor (above right).
Once there were three types of diaphragm assemblies available: Aluminum,
Symbiotik, and Pascalite. An original "Symbiotik" diaphragm has a Kapton
(plastic) surround with an aluminum dome. The aluminum and Pascalite
diaphragms are all metal (original Pascalite diaphragms have "909" silkscreened
on the dome). The "Pascalite" diaphragm has the sonic quality of the aluminum
diaphragm and handles twice as much power.
