Functional Description
The AT-2716POE Fast Ethernet Fiber & PoE Adapter is a highly
integrated dual-port adapter based on Broadcom’s BCM5718 chipset.
The primary data port is 100FX fiber. The secondary port is a 1 Gigabit
copper port which can support Class 3 Power over Ethernet (PoE)
devices. See Figure 1.
In networks where the main data backbone is fiber, the AT-2716POE
adapter is used to implement desktop VoIP (Voice over IP) solutions
which are usually copper based.
The Allied Telesis AT-2716POE AT-Mux Configuration software allows
packet bridging between the AT-2716POE FX fiber and the TP PoE
(Power over Ethernet) port. It allows you to enable and configure VLANs
as well as controlling the flow of packets through the bridge. The
Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 Operating Systems are
supported by the AT-2716POE adapter drivers.
The adapter connects a PCI-Express compliant workstation to a 100FX
Ethernet network. The adapter incorporates a technology that transfers
data at a maximum rate of 200 Mbps. In addition, the adapters use fiber
optic cabling and a connector that meets 62.5/125um or 50/125um
multimode specifications. The AT-2716POE fiber port operates at 100
Mbps half/full-duplex mode. The copper port operates with auto
negotiation of up to 1000 Mbps Full Duplex.

LEDs The AT-2716POE adapter has two LEDs located on the copper port. See
Figure 2. The left LED, labeled TX, indicates the link and activity status of
the 1 Gigabit copper port that has PoE capabilities. The right LED, labeled
FX, indicates the link and activity status of the 100FX fiber port. For a
description of the LEDs, see Table 1.

Warning
The adapter is being installed in a system that operates with voltages that
can be lethal. Before you remove the cover of your system, you must
observe the following precautions to protect yourself and to prevent
damage to the system components.
Remove any metallic objects or jewelry from your hands and wrists.
Use only insulated or non-conducting tools.
Verify that the system is powered OFF and unplugged before
accessing internal components.
Installation or removal of adapters must be performed in a static free
environment. The use of a properly grounded wrist strap or other
personal antistatic devices and an antistatic mat is strongly

Checking the Contents of Your Shipment
The following items are included with your adapter:
Antistatic bag (used for protecting the adapter when stored or
shipped). Keep the adapter in its packaging until ready for installation.
Standard profile bracket
Inform your network supplier of any missing or damaged items. If you
need to return the adapter, you must pack it in the original (or equivalent)
packing material or the warranty will be voided. See “Returning Products”
on page 12.

Pre-Installation Checklist
Before you install an adapter card, do the following:
1. Check that your system has an appropriate open PCIe slot.
2. For the PoE feature, check that you system has an appropriate SATA
or IDE power connector available on your system power supply
harness.
3. Verify that your system is using the latest BIOS.
4. If your system is active, shut it down.
5. When system shutdown is complete, power OFF and unplug your
system.
6. Holding the adapter card by the edges, remove it from its shipping
package and place it on an antistatic surface.
7. Check the adapter for visible signs of damage, particularly on the
card’s edge connector.
8. Do not attempt to install a damaged adapter. If the adapter is
damaged, report it to Allied Telesis. See “Contacting Allied Telesis” on
page 12.

Installing a Network Adapter Card
The following instructions apply to installing an AT-2716POE adapter in
most systems. If you need more information, refer to the manuals that
were supplied with your system for details about performing these tasks
on your particular system.
Note
To perform this procedure, you need to supply one Phillips-head
screw.
To install the network adapter card, perform the following procedure:
1. Review the “Pre-Installation Checklist” on page 21 and Reviewing
Safety Precautions” on page 18.
Before installing the adapter, ensure the system power is OFF and
unplugged from the power outlet, and that proper electrical grounding
procedures have been followed.
Warning
High voltage inside the system presents a safety hazard. Make
sure the power is off before removing the cover.
2. Remove the system cover. See Figure 3.

3. Select any appropriate empty, non-shared PCIe slot and remove the
faceplate. If you do not know how to identify an appropriate PCIe slot,
refer to your system documentation.
Keep the faceplate in a safe place. You may need it for future use. See
Figure 4.
4. Remove the network adapter card from the shipping package and
store the packaging material in a safe location.
Caution
5. Applying even pressure at both corners of the card, push the adapter
card until it is firmly seated in the appropriate PCIe slot.

Note
If you cannot locate or know how to find an appropriate PCIe slot,
refer to the documentation that came with your system.
Wear a grounding device and observe electrostatic discharge
precautions when installing the network adapter card in a system.
Failure to observe this caution could result in damage to the card.

Make sure the card is securely seated. See Figure 5.

Caution
6. Secure the network adapter card to the chassis with a Phillips-head
screw (not provided) as shown in Figure 6.
Do not use excessive force when seating the card, because this
may damage the system or the adapter. If the card resists seating,
remove it from the system, realign it, and try again.

7. Depending upon model order connect an appropriate unused power
connector from the system power supply harness to the AT-2716POE
SATA or IDE power connector receptacle as shown in Figure 7.

8. Replace the system’s cover and secure it with the screws removed in
Step 2.
9. Disconnect any personal antistatic devices.
10. Power the system on.
Next, connect the network cables. See “Connecting the Network Cables”
on page 26.
Note
Once the system returns to proper operation, the adapter
hardware is fully installed, but is not fully functional until the AT2716POE driver software (Chapters 3 and 4) and AT-2716POE
AT-Mux Configuration software (Chapter 5) is installed.

Connecting the Network Cables
The AT-2716POE adapter has one fi ber optic connector to connect to the
data network and one copper PoE port for attaching the adapter to a
compatible link partner. The fiber optic connector requires a fiber optic
cable. The copper port requires a twisted-pair cable. For pin signals and
pinout information, see “10/100/1000Base-T Twisted-Pair Port
Connectors” on page 88.
Note
For procedures to clean a fiber optic connection, see Appendix B
“Cleaning Fiber Optic Connectors” on page 91.
To connect the fiber and copper network cables to the adapter, do the
following:
1. Connect one end of the cable to the adapter:
For the copper port, connect one end of the twisted-pair cable to
the adapter.
For the fiber optic connector, prepare a fiber optic cable according
to the specifications in Table 2. Connect one end of the cable to
the adapter. See Figure 8 on page 27 for an example of the fiber
optic connector.
The fiber optic port contains a Class 1 laser device. When the port
is disconnected, always cover it with the provided plug. Active
exposed ports may cause skin or eye damage

2. Connect the other end of the cable to the appropriate Ethernet network
port or fiber optic port.
After the cable is properly connected at both ends, the adapter port
LED is functional. See Table 1 on page 15 for a description of adapter
port LED operation.
If the node attached to the AT-2716POE copper port is not capable of
auto negotiation, you may need to set the speed and duplex mode of
the AT-2716POE copper port.

Manual Driver
When you boot up the operating system after installing the adapter card,
Administrator privileges to install the driver software.
Installing the NDIS Driver Software
The system automatically detects new hardware and prompts you to
install the driver software for that device when a Windows XP system first
boots up. The same windows are displayed after an existing device driver
is removed.
There are two installation procedures:
“Using the Driver Installer” on page 30

The adapter must be physically installed in your system before
installing the driver software. See Chapter 2, “Installing the
Hardware” on page 17 for details.
Not
If the Windows XP system detects an adapter and installs a
default driver, update the driver as described in “Updating the
Adapter Software” on page 33.
Note
If there is an onboard Broadcom network interface, the native
Broadcom driver may load. It is recommended to install the latest
driver supplied by Allied Telesis.
Note
After XP driver installation AT-2716POE ATMux Configuration
software must be installed to complete the bridging function of the
adapter, refer to Chapter 5 for details.

To install the adapter software on a Windows XP system, do the
following:
1. Download the software drivers from the Allied Telesis website to a
folder on your computer.
For specific instructions, see “Where to Find Management Software
Updates and Product Information” on page 11.
2. Start up you Windows XP system and log in.
The initial Found New Hardware Wizard window is displayed. See
Figure 9

3. Click Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and then
click Next.
The search and installation options are displayed in the next Found
New Hardware Wizard window. See Figure 10 on page 32.

4. Click the check box for Include this location in the search.
5. Click Browse and locate the path of the software driver.
6. Click Next.
7. When the software installation is complete, click Finish to close the
wizard and complete the software installation.

Updating the
Adapter Software
This section provides a procedure for updating the adapter software for
Windows XP Operating Systems.
To obtain the latest AT-2716POE adapter software drivers, you can
download them from the Allied Telesis website at
www.alliedtelesis.com/support/software. For specific instructions, see
“Where to Find Management Software Updates and Product Information”
on page 11.
Updating the Windows XP Driver Software
To update the adapter software on a Windows XP system, do the
following:
1. Start a Windows XP system and log in. You must have Administrator
privileges to update the driver software.
2. On the desktop, open the Start menu. See Figure 11 on page 34 for
an example of the Start menu.

You may need to reboot your system after completing the driver
update to properly load the new drivers.

Update all adapters by repeating the following steps on each

4. In the Device Manager window, click the + next to the Network
adapters folder.
The selection expands to show the list of installed
network adapter cards.
5. Right click on the AT-2716POE adapter and select Update Driver.

Opening the
1. Start a Windows operating system and log in.
Installing the Driver Software
After you physically install an AT-2716POE adapter and turn on the
computer, the system detects the new hardware and asks for a software
driver when the Windows operating system first boots up. Shortly after
you log in, you need to install the driver software. To install or update the
driver software, you must have administrative privileges.
To obtain the latest AT-2716POE adapter software drivers, go to the
Allied Telesis website at www.alliedtelesis.com/support/software. For
specific instructions, see “Where to Find Management Software Updates
and Product Information” on page 11.
To install the Windows Vista or Windows 7 Operating System driver
software, do the following:

Virtual LANs and the AT-2716POE AT-Mux
Configuration Utility
The AT-2716POE adapter is IEEE 802.1Q-compliant and is designed to
support virtual LANs (VLANs) and tagged packets. A VLAN is an
independent traffic domain where traffic generated by the nodes of a
VLAN is restricted only to nodes that are members of the same VLAN.
Traffic within a VLAN cannot cross over a VLAN boundary unless there is
an interconnection device, such as a router or a Layer 3 switch in the
network.
Often, VLANs are used to group nodes with related functions into their
own separate, logical LAN segments. These VLAN groupings can be
based on similar data needs or security requirements. In addition, VLANs
can increase network performance and security by restricting traffic to
specific devices or areas of a network.
A tagged VLAN (IEEE 802.1Q) contains one or more network links that
carry traffic from more than one VLAN. The VLAN traffic is identified by a
header tag, or simply a tag, that follows the source and destination
addresses in a packet. The tag contains a VLAN identifier (VID) that
uniquely identifies the VLAN to which a packet belongs. The AT2716POE adapter is capable of reading the header tag in tagged packets
as they arrive on the port, as well as adding tags to packets when
transmitting packets.
Before a network adapter card can handle tagged packets, you must
configure it by specifying the appropriate VIDs of the VLANs whose
tagged packets the adapter is to process.
If the network adapter card handles tagged traffic from more than one
VLAN, you can use the AT-2716POE AT-Mux Configuration utility, which
you can download from the Allied Telesis website. This utility allows you
to assign a VIDs to each adapter port enabling a network adapter card to
process tagged traffic from different VLANs.
The following list briefly outlines the behavior of a network adapter card
when handling tagged and untagged VLAN traffic:
An adapter where no VIDs have been assigned accepts and transmits
only untagged packets. (An untagged packet does not contain a
header tag and, consequently, lacks VLAN identification.) The adapter
discards any tagged packets that arrive on the port. Both the fiber and
copper port communicate on the same network.
An adapter where at least one VID has been assigned accepts only
those tagged packets with header tags that match the assigned VIDs

on that assigned port. The adapter discards all untagged packets on
that port as well as any tagged packets with VIDs that do not match
the VIDs assigned to the card. Either one or both adapter ports can be
tagged with the same or different VIDs.

However, many VoIP devices cannot recognize VLAN tagged packets.
The AT-2716POE Configuration Utility handles this situation by allowing
you to enable the VLAN setting on the copper port and assign a unique
VLAN ID to the port for the VoIP traffic. Once this is done, the AT2716POE adapter will insert the correct VLAN tag on each VoIP Ethernet
packet before traffic flows onto the fiber cable.
The adapter is configured so that traffic from both VLANs flows through
the fiber port to the fiber backbone of the local area network. The data
traffic and VoIP traffic are segmented or isolated from each other with this
configuration even though all of the packets travel on the same fiber cable
connected to the AT-2716POE fiber port.
Example 1 shows a scenario where non VLAN aware VoIP phone is
present. VoIP data is transmitted untagged on VLAN 2 and network data
is tagged with VLAN1 and is segmented from VoIP data.

Example 2 shows a scenario where non VLAN aware VoIP phone is
present. In this scenario, the copper port of the AT-2716 POE is
responsible for tagging the VoIP data with VLAN 2. This data is then sent
through the fiber port to the network backbone. Network data continues to
be tagged with VLAN 1 and is segmented from VoIP data.
Example 3 shows a scenario where a VLAN aware phone is present and
has VLAN tagging enabled. VoIP data is transmitted tagged with VLAN 2
between the phone and the copper port. The AT-2716POE passes this
data unchanged from the copper port through the fiber port to the network
backbone. Network data continues to be tagged with VLAN 1 and is
segmented from VoIP data.
Each AT-2716POE port is capable of transmitting and receiving tagged
or non-tagged packets giving the network administrator several options as
listed in Table 3.

Loopback diagnostic tests are available for testing the adapter’s hardware
under Microsoft DOS operating system and are available for download at
the product’s website. These tests provide access to the adapter's
internal or external diagnostics, where packet information is transmitted
across the physical link.

Checking Port LEDs on the Adapter
The adapter has two LEDs, one LED for each port and indicates network
link and network activity. Before the port LEDs can provide
troubleshooting information, the adapter must be connected to the
network and the network drivers for your particular operating system must
be installed.
1. Verify that the adapter driver software has been installed and that the
adapter is connected to a network.
2. Check to see that the LEDs operate as described in Table 4.

Troubleshooting Checklist
The following checklist provides recommended actions to take to resolve
problems installing the Allied Telesis AT-2716POE adapter or running it in
your system.
Warning
Before opening the cabinet of your system for removing or
inserting the adapter, please review all precautions outlined under
“Reviewing Safety Precautions” on page 18.
Inspect all cables and connections. Verify that the cable connections
between the adapter and the switch are attached properly. Make sure
that the cable length and rating are compliant with the requirements
listed in “Connecting the Network Cables” on page 26."
Check the adapter installation by reviewing Chapter 2, “Installing the
Hardware” on page 17.
Make sure that the adapter board is properly seated in a PCIe slot.
Check for specific hardware problems, such as obvious damage to
board components or the PCIe edge connector.
Check the configuration settings and change them accordingly if they
are in conflict with another device.
Make sure that your system is using the latest BIOS.
Try inserting the adapter in another slot. If the new position works, the
original slot in your system may be defective.
Replace the failed adapter with one that is known to work properly. If
the second adapter works in the slot where the first one failed, the
original adapter is probably defective.
Install the adapter in another functioning system and run the tests
again. If the adapter passed the tests in the new system, the original
system may be defective.
Remove all other adapters from the system and run the tests again. If
the adapter passes the tests, the other adapters may be causing
contention.

on Allied Telesis’s Software Support website

Testing Network Connectivity
The following section describes how to test network connectivity for
Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 networks. Use the ping
command to determine if network connectivity is working.
Note
When using forced link speeds, make sure that both the adapter and the
switch are forced to the same speed. Or, make sure both partners are
configured for Auto-Negotiation.
To test the network connectivity for the Windows driver software, do the
following:
1. Select Run from the Windows Start Menu.

Problem: IP address is configurable on a member of the team.
Solution: When a team is created, the TCP/IP properties for the adapters
are unselected. Then you can select and configure TCP/IP properties of
the adapters and configure an IP address manually.
Problem: When creating 64 VLANs, all virtual adapters show
disconnected or one of the 64 VLANs show disabled.
Solution: The maximum VLAN configurations are 63 tagged and one
untagged VLAN ID 0. If 64 tagged VLANs are created, they are
disconnected. A reboot is required and only 63 tagged VLANs show links,
Problem: When the bus on the system is operating at PCIe mode, the
adapter performs at PCIe mode if it is added by the application.
Solution: When the system is booted up without an adapter, the bus
operates at the lowest mode which is PCI. This problem can be corrected
by rebooting the system.

Cleaning Fiber Optic Connectors
The fiber optic connector consists of a fiber optic plug and its adapter.
The end of the fiber optic cable is held in the core of the ferrule in the
plug. Light signals are transmitted through the core of the fiber. Even
minor smudges or dirt on the end face of the fiber, completely invisible to
the naked eye, can disrupt light transmission and lead to failure of the
component or of the entire system. Therefore, it is of utmost importance
to clean all fiber optic connectors before use.
Figure 44 shows the ferrule in an SC connector.
Figure 45 shows part of the end face of an unclean and clean ferrule.

Cleaning Fiber Optic Connectors
Using a Cartridge-Type Cleaner
Fiber optic cartridge cleaners are available from many vendors and are
typically called “cartridge cleaners,” as shown in Figure 46.

To clean a fiber optic connector using a cartridge cleaner, perform the
following procedure.
1. With one hand, hold the cartridge cleaner and push the lever on the
cleaning cartridge in the direction of the arrow to expose the cleaning
surface, as shown in Figure 47.
2. Place the ferrule tip on the exposed cleaning surface and rub the
ferrule in a downward direction, as shown in Figure 47.

tip, rotate and place it at the top and rub downwards at least 2 times.

Failing to pick up the ferrule tip when you reach the bottom of the
cleaning surface can result in static electricity that can damage the
fiber optic cable.
4. If desired, repeat steps 3 and 4.
5. If a fiber inspection scope is available, use the scope to inspect the
ferrule end face to make sure that it is clean.
6. Reconnect the cable to the port or protect the ferrule tip with a dust
cap.

Using a Swab
Specially treated swabs, known as stick cleaners, are available for
cleaning inside connector adapters or hard-to-reach ferrule tips. These
swabs, often referred to as “lint free” or “alcohol free” swabs, are available
from many vendors, as shown in Figure 48. Stick cleaners are available in
both 2.5 mm and 1.25 mm sizes for use on SC and MU connectors
respectively.

NEVER use a household cotton swab and/or alcohol to clean a
fiber optic connector. This may leave a residue on the ferrule tip.
To clean a recessed ferrule using a swab, perform the following
procedure.
1. Insert the swab into the adapter as shown in Figure 47 and rub the
ferrule tip with the swab.
2. If desired, repeat step 1.
