Introduction
In this manual we will show you how to set up the Internal Modem module on the SEC.
The SEC Internal Modem allows you to save space and reduce clutter: as an internal module, no
additional USB or audio cables are required, and most of the external modem features are supported
(see below for details).
It also has an attacheable external antenna that can improve signal strength.
There are very few changes in the SEC Web UI; you could configure and use the Internal Modem
exactly the same as the other external modems in the notification wizards.
For this reason, we don’t go into details on how to set up each notification or action; please refer to
the EDGE 180 GSM USB Modem Manual or the HSUPA 3G Modem Setup Manual for setting up
the notifications. However we will point out the differences for each action, where it’s required.
The front panel of the SEC with the Internal Modem includes a slot for the SIM card with its yellow
eject button, and an antenna jack for the attacheable external antenna:
Note: There is no auto-detection for the modem module; you have to visually inspect the front panel
to check if the module is present in your unit.
The SEC Internal Modem only supports the following functions:
• SMS alerts
• Telephone Call with text-to-speech and acknowledgement
• OpenVPN client (it works the same way as all other SEC modems; see the VPN manual)
• Dial-Out Modem configuration
Not supported with the Internal Modem:
• Dial-In feature
• Telephone call with WAV file playback support (it will be done in a later firmware version)

Dial-Out Modem configuration on the Web UI
You can find the Internal Modem listed in the Dial-Out Modem configuration’s Modem On Port list.
As we noted in the introduction part, all instructions for setting up the voice call, SMS text notifications
and the VPN client are the same as for the other modem types; just select Internal Modem from the
drop-down list when selecting the modem for the connection.
You would still need your mobile network provider’s connection details when setting up the Dial-Out
Profile.
Important note: On older firmware versions (prior
405n) you must set the Modem Port Speed to
Auto, otherwise the modem can’t connect. Newer
firmware versions automatically set this value and
you can’t change it from the UI.
Troubleshooting: If you’ve set the Port Speed to another value prior to upgrading the firmware,
temporarily change the Modem On Port to another modem type (ex. USB) and save the configuration.
Change it back to Internal Modem and the speed value will be correct.

SEC Web UI changes for each action
In the following section, we’ll show you the changes for each action type where it’s necessary, and
provide additional information.
Note: No SEC modem can be configured from AKCess Pro Server (APS); only modems that can be
connected directly to the computer running APS are configurable within APS, for example the 3G
USB modem. For configuring SEC modems, you have to log in to the unit’s Web UI.
A) Telephone Call action configuration
a) Text-to-speech action
This action is fully supported, the configuration is the same as with other modems.
The changes for this type of action is just for choosing the Voice Modem Port.
Choose Internal Modem from the drop-down list; all other configuration options for the modem on this
page will be greyed out, as they are automatically selected:

Important note for the text-to-speech action:
If you are using a telephone call dial-out procedure, you’ll have to use dial modes with
acknowledgements, if there is a possibility that the called phone number will redirect an unanswered
call to a voice mail service.
Because if you use a dial-out procedure where no user acknowledgement is required, the Internal
Modem will not recognize that the sent notification message is being recorded with an automated
voice mail service, instead of being listened by a person (after reaching the defined no-answer
timeout).
When this happens, the telephone call notification will have a status of successfully completed,
regardless of when the message actually reach its destination from the voice mail.
However this could only happen if the mobile network’s no-answer timeout is less than the SEC
predefined timeout, which is 60 seconds.
b) WAV file playback action (unsupported)
Please note that the WAV file playback is not supported with the Internal Modem at this time; if you
try to create an action with this option, a warning message will appear and you can’t continue setting
up the action:
Telephone call with WAV file playback support is planned, but will be done in a later firmware version.

B) SMS action configuration
The changes for this type of action is just for choosing the Mobile Phone Port and Initialization String.
Choose Internal Modem from the drop-down list for both:
Note: After you select the Internal Modem for the Initialization String, you don’t need to enter it
manually, it’s fixed in the firmware (as with the other modems in the drop-down list).

SIM card information
Mobile Service Provider SIM Card
You will need to purchase a SIM card from your local mobile service provider that you will install in
the modem. This SIM card will provide the mobile connection that enables the modem to send the
SMS, MMS, or Voice alerts to your mobile phones.
Note on SIM: If the SIM card you purchased requires a PIN number, then you will need to contact
your service provider and have them provide you with the instructions for disabling the PIN code on
the SIM card. Otherwise it will not work with the modem.
It is always a good idea to test the SIM card in a mobile phone to ensure the SIM is working properly
before installing it in the modem.
The SEC Internal Modem’s SIM socket only accepts standard mini-size SIM cards. Smaller sizes are
supported with an adapter (available separately) that converts the Micro and Nano SIM sizes to Mini.
Important note: Only insert and remove the SIM card when the unit is turned off. Otherwise you can
damage the SIM and the modem.

Placing the SIM card in the Internal Modem
First you’ll have to eject the holder tray from the SIM card holder by pressing in the yellow button
on the front panel of the SEC unit:
Then you need to place the SIM card in the holder tray in the correct way (note the slanted edge on
the SIM card).
Reinsert the tray into the slot, facing in the same way as it was when you have taken it out (for
orientation reference, see the picture below).
Don’t use too much force while reinserting; if the card holder doesn’t click in to place easily, that
means the orientation isn’t correct.
The SIM card holder built into the unit looks like the following, with the holder tray taken out:
Important note: Only insert and remove the SIM card when the unit is turned off. Otherwise you can
damage the SIM and the modem.
Troubleshooting: If you’ve inserted the SIM to the modem before turning off the unit, then the
modem won’t recognize it. You need to power off the unit and then back on.

External antenna
The supplied external antenna can be easily attached to the modem’s antenna jack (SMA type) on
the SEC front panel, as shown here:
It will give the modem increased signal strength in areas with low reception. The cable length allows
the best placement of the antenna itself, for the highest signal level.
