Explanation of Graphical Symbols:

The lightning flash with arrowhead symbol, within an equilateral triangle, is intended to alert the user to the presence of uninsulated "dangerous voltage" within the product’s enclosure that may be of sufficient magnitude to constitute a risk of electric shock to persons.

The exclamation point within an equilateral triangle is intended to alert the user to the presence of important operating and maintenance (servicing) instructions in the literature accompanying the appliance.

PRECAUTIONS

Read the Operating Instructions carefully and completely before operating the unit. Be sure to keep the Operating Instructions for future reference. All warnings and cautions in the Operating Instructions and on the unit should be strictly followed, as well as the safety suggestions below .

Installation

1Water and moisture — Do not use this unit near water ,

such as near a bathtub, sink, swimming pool, or the like.

2 Heat — Do not use this unit near sources of heat,

including heating vents, stoves, or other appliances that generate heat. This unit should not be placed in temperatures less than 5˚C (41˚F) or greater than 35˚C (95˚F).

3 Mounting place — Place the unit:

- on a flat , even surface

- away from strong magnetic fields

- at least one meter away from any radios or receivers Do not place heavy objects on the unit.

4Ventilation — The unit should be situated with adequate

space around it so that proper heat ventilation is assured. Allow a clearance of 10 cm (4 in.) from the rear and the top of the unit, and 5 cm (2 in.) from each side.

-Do not place the unit on a bed, rug, or similar surface that may block the ventilation openings.

- Do not install the unit in a bookcase, cabinet, or airtight rack where ventilation may be impeded.

-To avoid internal heat build-up, do not cover the ventilation openings on the rear panel.

5 Foreign objects and liquid — Be careful that foreign

objects or liquid do not enter the unit through the ventilation openings.

6 Carts and stands — The unit should

be moved with care when placed or mounted on a stand or cart. Sudden stops, excessive force, or an uneven surface may cause the unit or cart to fall over .

7Condensation — Moisture may form on the pickup lens

when:

- This unit is moved from a cold spot to a warm spot

-A heating system has just been turned on

- The unit is used in a very humid room

- The unit is cooled by an air conditioner

When this unit has condensation inside, it may not function normally . Should this occur , leave the unit for a few hours, then try to operate again.

Electric power

1 Power sources — Connect this unit only to power

sources specified in the Operating Instructions, and as marked on the unit.

2AC power cord

-When disconnecting the AC power cord, pull it out by the AC power plug. Do not pull the cord itself.

- Never handle the AC power plug with wet hands, as this could result in fire or electrical shock.

- Power cords should be firmly secured to avoid being severely bent, pinched, or walked upon. Pay particular attention to the cord from the unit to the power socket.

-Avoid overloading AC power plugs and extension cords beyond their capacity , as this could result in fire or electrical shock.

3When not in use — Unplug the AC power cord from

the AC outlet if the unit will not be used for several months or more. When the cord is plugged in, a small electrical current continues to flow into the unit, even if the power is turned of f.

4 In case of lightning — Immediately disconnect the AC

power cord from the AC outlet.

Maintenance

Clean the unit only as recommended in the Operating Instructions.

Damage requiring service

Have this unit serviced by a qualified service technician if:

- The AC power cord or plug has been damaged

-A foreign object or liquid has entered the unit

- The unit has been exposed to rain or water

- The unit does not seem to operate normally

- The unit exhibits a marked change in performance

- The unit has been dropped, or the cabinet has been damaged

DO NOT OPEN THE CABINET AND ATTEMPT TO SERVICE THE UNIT YOURSELF.

BEFORE USE

Please read the following before operating the unit.

About symbols

Although this unit can play DVDs, audio CDs or MP3 discs, some of the functions are restricted dependent on the type of disc. The following symbols are used to make distinction. Playback of MP3 discs is dif ferent from that of other kinds of discs. For information about playing back MP3 discs, see page 36.

: Shows the function or the display for only

DVDs.

: Shows the function or the display for only

audio CDs.

No symbols: The function works for DVDs and audio CDs.

Supported disc formats

This unit can play discs with the following marks only .

DVD (8 cm disc/12 cm disc)

Audio CD (8 cm disc/12 cm disc)

This unit can play a DVD-R recorded in V ideo mode. In addition, this unit can play a CD-R or CD-R W that contains audio titles or MP3 files.

NOTES

• The unit can play DVD-R discs recorded in V ideo mode only. DVD-R discs recorded in VR (V ideo Recording) mode cannot be played on the unit.

• Depending on the conditions of the recording equipment, some DVD-R discs cannot be played on the unit even if they have been recorded in V ideo mode.

• Some DVD-R discs cannot be played on the unit due to scratches on the surface or warp, etc.

• Depending on the conditions of the recording equipment or the CD-R/RW disc itself, some CD-R/R W discs cannot be played on the unit.

• The unit cannot play the CD-R/R W discs that contain no data, or contain dif ferent kinds of formatted data other than MP3. For more information about MP3, see page 36.

• Do not attach any seal or label to either side (the labeled side or the recorded side) of a disc.

• Do not use irregular shaped CDs (e.g., heart-shaped or octagonal). It may result in malfunctions.

Notes on color format

The materials for DVD discs are recorded in the P AL and NTSC color format. Select DVDs recorded in NTSC color format.

Notes on DVDs

Some playback operations of DVDs may be intentionally fixed by software manufacturers. As this unit plays DVDs according to disc content designed by the software manufacturer , some playback features of the unit may not be available, or other functions may be added. Refer also to the instructions supplied with the DVDs. Some DVDs made for business purposes may not be played on the unit.

Region code of the DVD player and DVDs

This DVD player is designed and manufactured for playback of region "1" encoded DVD software. The region code on the labels of some DVD discs indicates which type of player can play those discs. This unit can play only DVD discs labeled "1" or "ALL". If you try to play any other discs, the message "Invalid region disc" will appear on the TV screen. Some DVD discs may not have a region code label even though their playback is prohibited by area limits.

Note on DTS-encoded CDs

When playing DTS-encoded CDs, excessive noise will be exhibited from the analog stereo outputs. T o avoid possible damage to the audio system, turn down the volume before playing back such discs, adjust the volume gradually , and keep the volume level low . To enjoy DTS Digital Surround playback, an external 5.1 channel DTS Digital Surround decoder system must be connected to the digital output of the unit.

Disc-related terms

Title (DVD only)

The longest section of a picture or a musical piece on a DVD, a movie for a picture piece on video software, or an album for a musical piece on audio software. Each title is assigned a title number enabling you to locate the title you want.

Notes on copyright

It is forbidden by law to copy , broadcast, show , broadcast via cable, play in public, or rent copyright material without permission.

This product features the copy protection function developed by Macrovision. Copy protection signals are recorded on some discs. When recording and playing the pictures of these discs on a VCR, the picture noise will appear. This product incorporates copyright protection technology that is protected by method claims of certain U.S. patents and other intellectual property rights owned by Macrovision Corporation and other rights owners. Use of this copyright protection technology must be authorized by Macrovision Corporation, and is intended for home and other limited viewing uses only unless otherwise authorized by Macrovision Corporation. Reverse engineering or

disassembly is prohibited.

INTRODUCTION

Chapter (DVD only)

Sections of a picture or a musical piece that are smaller than titles. A title is composed of several chapters. Each chapter is assigned a chapter number , enabling you to locate the chapter you want. Depending on the disc, no chapters may be recorded.

Track (audio CD only)

Sections of a musical piece on an audio CD. Each track is assigned a track number , enabling you to locate the track you want.

Handling discs

Do not touch the playback side of the disc. Hold the disc by the edges so that fingerprints will not get on the surface. Do not stick paper or tape on the disc.

Cleaning discs

Fingerprints and dust on the disc can cause poor picture quality and sound distortion. Before playing, clean the disc with a clean cloth. W ipe the disc from the center out.

Do not use strong solvents such as alcohol, benzine, thinner , commercially available cleaners, or anti-static spray intended for analog records.

Storing discs

After playing, store the disc in its case. Do not expose the disc to direct sunlight or sources of heat, or leave it in a parked car exposed to direct sunlight, as there may be a considerable temperature increase inside the car.

Handling the unit

When shipping the unit

The original shipping carton and packing materials come in handy . For maximum protection, re-pack the unit as it was originally packed at the factory .

When setting the unit

The picture and sound of a nearby TV, VCR, or radio may be distorted during playback. In this case, position the unit away from the TV, VCR, or radio, or turn of f the unit after removing the disc.

To keep the surface clean

Do not use volatile liquids, such as insecticide spray , near the unit. Do not leave rubber or plastic products in contact with the unit for a long period of time. They will leave marks on the surface.

Cleaning the unit

To clean the cabinet

Use a soft, dry cloth. If the surfaces are extremely dirty , use a soft cloth lightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use strong solvents, such as alcohol, benzine, or thinner , as these might damage the surface of the unit.

To obtain a clear picture

The DVD player is a high-tech, precision device. If the optical pick-up lens and disc drive parts are dirty or worn down, the picture quality will be poor . Regular inspection and maintenance are recommended after every 1,000 hours of use. (This depends on the operating environment.) For details, please contact your Aiwa dealer .

REMOTE CONTROL

Before using the remote control

A battery (CR2025) is already installed in the remote control when shipped from the factory . Remove the insulating tape from the battery holder by pulling its end as shown below .

When to replace the battery

The maximum operating distance between the remote control and the remote sensor of the unit is approximately 7 meters. If the operating range decreases, replace the battery with a new one.

How to replace the battery

Insert a ballpoint pen or similar pointed tool in the notch of the battery holder at the bottom, and then slide out the battery holder . Place a new battery (CR2025) into the battery holder with correct polarity . Finally , push the holder back into position.

CAUTION

• Lithium battery (CR2025) for the remote control

Replace the battery with Hitachi Maxell or Panasonic, Part No. CR2025 only . Use of another battery may present a risk of fire or explosion. The battery may explode if mistreated. Do not recharge, disassemble or dispose of in fire.

•Do not keep metallic objects such as rings, bracelets, and keys near the battery . They may cause the battery to short circuit.

•After removing the battery , be sure to keep it out of reach of children. If it is swallowed, consult a doctor immediately .

•When operating with the remote control, point the top of the remote control toward the DVD player .

• If the unit is not going to be used for an extended period of time, remove the battery to prevent possible electrolyte leakage.

• The remote control may not operate correctly when:

- There is an intense light, such as sunlight, in the line

of sight between the remote control and the DVD player .

-There is fluorescent lighting near the remote sensor .

-Other remote controls are used nearby (those of a TV

set, etc.).

Display window

This unit shows On Screen Display messages on the screen of the TV connected to the unit, as well as the display window of the unit. The On Screen Display of each operation makes operation simple and easy , especially when playing DVDs. They appear when you press the ON SCREEN button on the remote control. The instructions in this manual refer mainly to the On Screen Display messages.

Time counter

•Indicates the elapsed time of the chapter or track.

• Indicates the total playing time of a CD, in stop mode. (The total playing time is not displayed when other kinds of discs stopped.)

Operating status indicator

Rotates when loading and playing back a disc. CHAPTER indicator

• Indicates the chapter number being played during DVD playback.

•Indicates a total number of tracks in stop mode, or the track number being played during playback of a CD.

Indicates the title number being played during DVD playback.

CONNECTIONS

Before connecting, identify your type of audio equipment or TV referring to the following chart. Then, decide the connection and the setup procedure accordingly .

NOTES

• The unit cannot be connected to a TV which is not equipped with a video input connector .

• Use a commercially available stereo-monaural audio cord when connecting to a monaural TV .

Before making connections

• Connect the AC cords of the unit and any external equipment last, after finishing all other connections.

• Insert the plugs completely into the jacks. Loose connections may produce a humming sound or other noise interference.

•Refer to the instructions of the connected equipment.

CAUTION

Do not set "Dolby Digital" to "Bitstream", and "DTS" to "Bitstream" in the setup menu when connecting to an AV receiver not equipped with a Dolby Digital decoder or DTS decoder (with a coaxial connecting cord). Merely attempting to play a DVD may cause a screeching noise which could be harmful to your ears and damage the speakers. In such a case, be sure to select "PCM" in "Digital Out".

CAUTION

When connecting an AV receiver not equipped with a Dolby Digital decoder using a coaxial connecting cord, do not set "Dolby Digital" to "Bitstream" in "Digital out" of the setup menu. Merely attempting to play a DVD may cause a screeching noise which could be harmful to your ears and damage the speakers. In such a case, be sure to set "Dolby Digital" to "PCM" in "Digital Out".

CAUTION

When connecting an AV receiver not equipped with a DTS decoder using a coaxial connecting cord, do not set "DTS" to "Bitstream" in "Digital out" of the setup menu. When the menu screen is displayed

The menu screen may be displayed first after loading a DVD which contains a menu.

Use the j/l/f/g buttons to select the title/chapter you want to view , then press OK c to start playback. Press TOP MENU or MENU to return to the menu screen.

To turn the power off

Press POWER on the remote control. The unit enters power standby mode and the 6STANDBY indicator turns red.

If the unit is left for 20 minutes without any operations

The unit automatically enters standby mode.

NOTE

Repeating a portion between two specified points (A-B Repeat)

You can select a portion of a track to be repeated. The portion to be repeated cannot span a track boundary , but must be within a single track.

For DVD: Press t to go to the

second part of the On Screen Display menu, and press l to select the A-B Repeat icon. For CD: Press j/l to select the A-B Repeat icon.

Press OK c at the starting point (A)

PLAYING BACK AN MP3 DISC

The unit can play back MP3s recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R or CD-RW discs. Before playing back an MP3 disc, read the following notes.

Notes on MP3 discs

An MP3 file stores audio data compressed using MPEG1, the audio layer-3 file-coding scheme. In this manual, we refer to what, in PC terminology , are called "folders" and "files" as "albums" and "tracks".

Notes on playing MP3s

• An MP3 track must be recorded on a disc in the format compliant with ISO 9660. Note however , that the unit may not play tracks in the order they were recorded.

• The maximum allowable number of tracks and/or albums in a disc is 900, including the root albums (directory).

• The maximum allowable depth of a nested folder is 127, including files.

• If a disc contains audio tracks and MP3 tracks, the unit cannot play it.

• As for multi-session discs, the unit can play up to 20 sessions.

• The unit can play only MP3 tracks which were converted with a sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz and a fixed bit rate of 128 kbps.

• The unit may not play MP3 tracks recorded using a packet writing utility .

• The unit can play only MP3 tracks having a file extension ".mp3".

• It may take 30 seconds or more before the unit can start play of MP3 tracks, depending on the number of recorded tracks and the complexity of the album tree.

• If you play a non-MP3 track that has the ".mp3" file extension, it will skip to the next valid track automatically .

•Digital recordings with this unit cannot be done while playing back MP3 discs.

Notes on display indications during playback

•Up to 8 characters are displayed for the name of an album or track.

•Characters other than uppercase letters ("A" to "Z"), numerals ("0" to "9") and underscore ("_") may not be displayed, or may be displayed in dif ferent characters.

• The elapsed playing time may not be displayed correctly for MP3 tracks.

• Depending on the condition of the recording equipment or the CD-R/RW disc itself, a false album or track which cannot be played on the unit may be displayed on TV screen.

Notes on creating MP3 discs

•When converting audio data to MP3 Create MP3 files with a sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz and a fixed bit rate of 128 kbps.

• When creating MP3 discs Do not store more than 900 albums and/or tracks in a disc.

•To play tracks in the order they were recorded

1.Use a writing software capable of recording MP3 tracks

(files) in numerical and alphabetical order . For details on using the software, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the software.

2.Use only one album. (Do not create a sub-album within

an album.)

3.Include a two or three-digit number at the beginning

of each album or track name so that the albums and tracks are played in order . <Example of recommended name structure>

Glossary

File extension:

A 3-character string added to a file name under the Windows or DOS environment is called a "file extension". A file extension is used mainly to identify types of files. The file extension for MP3 files is ".mp3".

ISO 9660:

ISO stands for the "International Organization for Standardization". ISO 9660 determines the file structure for the CD-ROMs. This unit can play MP3 files recorded in the format compliant with ISO 9660.

Nesting of folders (albums):

To organize data files stored in a PC, you can store related files in a folder . A folder can contain other folders as well as files. For example, folder A can contain folder B, and folder B can contain folder C; this is called "nesting of folders".

Session:

A session is one uninterrupted section of written data on a disc. A multi-session disc is a disc which has more than two sessions.

[New] command

CHANGING SETUP VALUES

All the basic settings of the unit are properly preset at the factory.

• Check that "Digital out" and "TV aspect" in the setup menu are correctly set according to the type of equipment connected to the unit. For details on the setting, refer to the "Connections" section on pages 11 to 19.

• Change any other settings according to your individual setup preferences.

Sets the audio soundtrack language, subtitle language, DVD menu screen language and on screen display language.

Subtitle

Turns on and of f the subtitle.

TV aspect

Sets the color system and aspect ratio of the TV connected to the unit.

Audio set

Emits test tone and adjusts the DRC (Dynamic Range Control).

Digital out

Sets the digital audio to be output from the unit according to the type of audio equipment connected to the unit.

Parental

Sets the preset restriction level for playback. When playing discs with preset restriction level encoding, the unit automatically cuts scenes of excessive violence, etc.

On screen

Turns on and of f the command response shown on the top corner of the TV screen.

Quit

Exits the setup menu.

The unit detects automatically the TV color format of the disc, NTSC or P AL.

To set the TV aspect

Select the appropriate screen type of your TV.

Press j/l to select "TV aspect" on

the setup menu and press OK c.

16:9:

Select this when a wide-screen TV is connected. Played in "FULL" size. (Setting the wide-screen TV to "FULL" mode is also necessary .)

Press OK c.

If you select "Return" at step 3, the current setting does not change.

L-Box:

Select this when a conventional TV is connected. Media recorded in wide (16:9) format will be played in "Letterbox" style, with black bands at the top and bottom of the screen.

P-Scan:

Select this when playing media that contains pan-scan encoding. Media recorded in wide (16:9) format will be played at the full screen height, with the left and right portions cut of f. Other media will be played in "Letterbox".

Audio set

To emit test tone

You can hear a noise tone emitted from the front left and right speakers alternately . If the noise tone from the left speaker and the right speaker are heard unevenly , adjust the left and right speaker balance using the connected equipment.

Press j/l to select "Audio set" on

the setup menu and press OK c.

Confirm that "Test Tone" is selected,

and press OK c.

To adjust DRC (Dynamic Range Control)

When listening at a low volume, the volume of loud sounds such as explosions, etc., can be reduced, and the volume of quiet sounds such as whispered dialog, etc., can be increased using the DRC.

Press j/l to select "Audio set" on

the setup menu and press OK c.

Press f/g to select "DRC" and

press OK c.

Press j/l to adjust DRC.

Select this mode when playing back at a low volume. Pressing j twice at the above illustration makes DRC maximum.

Noise tone is emitted from the front left and right speakers alternately .

Press OK c to stop the noise tone.

Press f/g to select "Exit" and

press OK c.

To exit the setup menu

Select this mode when you want to enjoy the full dynamic range of sound. Pressing l three times at the above illustration makes DRC minimum.

Digital out

Each DVD disc has a variety of audio output options. Set the digital output of the unit according to the type of audio system you use.

CAUTION

When connecting an AV receiver not equipped with a Dolby Digital decoder or DTS decoder, do not set "Dolby Digital" to "Bitstream" and "DTS" to "Bitstream".

Merely attempting to play a DVD may cause a screeching of noise which could be harmful to your ears and damage the speakers. In such a case, set "Dolby Digital" to "PCM" and "DTS" to "Off".

Press j/l to select "Digital out" on

the setup menu and press OK c.

Dolby Digital:

You can select "Bitstream" or "PCM".

-Bitstream : select this when the connected AV receiver is equipped with a MPEG decoder .

- PCM : select this when the connected AV receiver is not equipped with a MPEG decoder .

DTS:

You can select "Bitstream" or "Of f".

- Bitstream : select this when the connected AV receiver is equipped with a DTS decoder .

- Off : select this when the connected AV receiver is not equipped with a DTS decoder .

Parental

Some DVD discs contain a restriction level which enables parents to remove scenes or prevent children from playing the discs. This unit is equipped with a password designed to prevent children from changing the level.

To set the parental lock level and password

Press j/l to select "Parental" on the

setup menu and press OK c.

Confirm that "Level" is selected, and

press OK c.

Press OK c.

Enter a 4-digit password using the

number buttons, then press OK c.

Press j/l to change the parental

lock level.

The parental lock level is equivalent to the following USA movie ratings.

Example: Level 7: NC-17 Level 6: R Level 4: PG 13 Level 3: PG Level 1: G

Example: To set the password 1234

Press 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Do not forget your password.

TROUBLESHOOTING

If something seems to be wrong with your DVD player , first check the items in the table below .

Symptom

The power does not come on. The disc does not play.

Playback stops almost immediately.

No picture.

The picture is bad.

No sound.

The remote control does not work, or does not work correctly.

• Is the power cord plugged firmly into a live outlet?

•Is there condensation inside the unit? (Leave the player idle with the power on for 1 to 2 hours.)

• Are you trying to use a disc not available for the unit, such as a PHOTO CD?

• Is the disc dirty? Is it loaded properly?

• Does the disc exceed the specified parental control rating level?

• Is the unit connected correctly?

• Are the video connections firmly attached?

• Is the television video mode set correctly?

• Is the unit in a place subject to vibrations?

• Are the video connections firmly attached?

•Is the disc dirty?

•Is the unit connected directly to the TV? Or is it connected through a VCR, a selector switch, or a TV/VCR? The picture may be bad when used with some television sets or projectors, due to the DVD copy protection scheme. The picture quality may also suf fer if the DVD player is connected through a selector switch with other video equipment. Try turning of f the power to the other video equipment. The picture quality may be somewhat poor when paused, when doing Frame Advance, or during fast forward or fast reverse. This is normal.

• Is the TV color format set correctly?

• Is the unit connected correctly?

• Are the audio connections firmly attached?

• Is the connected audio equipment turned on? Is the volume set correctly? (Note that there will be no audio playback during slow playback, Frame Advance, fast forward, or fast reverse.)

• Are the remote control batteries installed correctly?

• Is the remote control too far from the main unit? Is there something in the way?

• Are the remote control batteries getting weak?

• Is the unit in strong sunlight or strong fluorescent light?

DVD has many capabilities

Some of these capabilities may dif fer based on the disc being played. The following situations may be caused by information on the disc itself.

• The audio or subtitles are not reproduced in the language specified in the setup menu.

• The audio track or subtitles cannot be changed.

• Subtitles are not displayed.

• The DVD menu is not displayed. The DVD menu is not displayed in the language you want.

• The viewing angle cannot be changed.

• The rating restriction does not work.
