The JM865A (Catalog # 2110.88) is designed for use in industrial environments. The “sq uared” jaws
permit multiple conductor or bus bar positioning. The current output makes it the perfect tool for
measurement with DMMs, rec orders, power and harm onic meters. Three ranges allo w you to obtain the
best resolution even on low current measurement. The Model JM865A is compatible with any AC
Ammeter, multimet er, or other cu rrent measuring i nstrument with an input imped ance lower than 2Ω. To
achieve the stated accuracy, use the JM865A with an Ammeter having an accuracy of 0.75%.

to use or service this instrument.
• Use caution on any circuit: Potentiall y h igh vol t age s and currents may be present and may pose
a shock hazard.
• Read the Safety Specifications section prior to using the current probe. Never exceed the
maximum voltage ratings given.
• Safety is the responsibility of the operator.
• ALWA YS connect the curre nt probe to the di splay device be fore clamping t he probe onto t he
sample being tested.
• ALWA YS inspect the instrumen t, p ro be , pr obe ca bl e, an d ou tp ut te rm inal s pri or to use. Replace
any defective parts immediately.
• NEVER use the current probe on electrical conductors rated above 600V in overvoltage
category III (CAT III). Use extreme caution when clamping around bare conductors or bus bars.

This symbol signifies that the cur rent prob e is protect ed by doubl e or reinfo rced ins ulation. Us e
only factory specified replacement parts when servicing the instrument.
This symbol signifies CAUTION! and requests that the user refer to the user manual before
using the instrument.
This is a type A current sensor. This symbol signifies that application ar oun d a nd rem oval
from HAZARDOUS LIVE conductors is permitted.
DEFINITION OF MEASUREMENT CATEGORIES
CAT II: For measurem ents performed on circ uits directly connecte d to the electrical distri bution system.
Examples are measurements on household appliances or portable tools.
CAT III: For measurements performed in the building installation at the distribution level such as on
hardwired equipment in fixed installation and circuit breakers.
CAT IV: For measurements performed at the primary electrical supply (<1000V) such as on primar y
overcurrent protection devices, ripple control units, or meters.
RECEIVING YOUR SHIPMENT
Upon receiving your shipment, make sure that the contents are consistent with the packing list. Notify your
distributor of any missing items. If the equipment appears to be damaged, file a claim immediately with the

ORDERING INFORMATION
Current Probe JM865A.................... Cat #2110.88
Please make sure that you have already read and fully understand the WARNING section on page 1.
Making Measurements with the AC Current Probe Model JM865A
• Connect the black and red terminals to the Ampere AC range of your DMM or current measuring
instrument. Sel ect the ap propriate c urrent ra nge.If the current m agnitude i s unkno wn, select th e highest
range (3000 A AC / 5 A AC) on the s witch pro be locat ed insid e the ha ndle. Cl amp the p robe ar ound the
conductor to be tested, with the arro w pointed dd toward the l oad. Sel ect the lo wer range until you obtain
the best resolution. R ead the val ue dis play on th e DMM and m ultiply it b y the range s elected. (If readi ng
= 2.59 A on the 1000/5 range, the current flowing through the probe is 2.59 A x 200 = 518 A AC).
• For best acc urac y: care full y cent er th e condu ctor i nside t he probe j aw, av oid if possi ble, the pr oximi ty of
other conductors which may create noise.
Tips for Making Precise Measurements
• W hen using a current probe with a meter, it is im portant to select the range that provides the best
resolution. Failure to do this may result in measurement errors.
• Make sure that probe jaw mati ng surfaces ar e free of dust and c ontamination. Co ntaminants ca use air
gaps between t he ja ws, inc reas ing t he phase shift bet ween prim ary a nd sec o ndar y. It i s ver y criti cal for
power measurement.
MAINTENANCE:
Warning
• For maintenance use only original replacement parts.
• To avoid electrical shock, do not attempt to perform any servicing unless you are qualified to do so.
• To avoid electrical shock and/or damage to the instrument, do not get water or other foreign agents into
the probe.
Cleaning
To ensure optimum p erforma nce, it is i mportant t o keep t he probe ja w mating surfaces cl ean at all tim es.
Failure to do so ma y result in error i n readings. To cl ean the probe j aws, use very fi ne sand paper (fi ne
600) to avoid scratching the jaw, then gently clean with a soft oiled cloth.
REPAIR AND CALIBRATION
You must contact our Service Center for a Customer Service Authorization number (CSA#). This will
ensure that whe n your instrument arriv es, it will be tracked an d p rocessed promptl y. Ple ase w rit e t h e CS A#
on the outside of the shipping container.
NOTE: All customers must obtain a CSA# before returning any instrument.
