Safety instructions for the user
- Follow the installation and connection instructions
- Do not connect a damaged machine (e.g. damaged during transport) to main.
- Small quantities of water in the detergent/additive compartment are due to factory quality control process.
- To remove residue from manufacturing in the wash into drum and dispenser compartment, a wash programme without clothes should be carried out - e.g. colour wash 60°C with a 1/2 measuring cup of detergent.
The safety of AEG electrical appliances is in conformity with recognized technical standards and current legislation. Nevertheless, we feel obliged to point out to you and other possible users the following :
- Ensure before switching on the machine that the nominal
voltage and current type indicated on the manufacturer’s plate correspond with the voltage and current type where the machine is to be used. The necessary information fuse protection can also be taken from the rating plate
- If your ÖKO-LAVAMAT is in a room subject to tempera-
tures
below freezing, the water must be removed from the machine to avoid the danger of freezing be expected.
- Before cleaning, care and maintenance, ensure that the
machine is switched off. You are completely safe if you remove the plug from the socket, or, in the case of a fixed installation, when the circuit breaker is open or the cartridge-fuse is completely removed (see installation and connection instructions).
- Never spray the machine with a jet of water.
- Never pull the plug out by pulling on the cord, but rather on
the plug itself.
Page 5
- Do not switch the machine on if the electrical cord is damaged, or if the machine shows signs of damage to the control panel, the work top or the base
- Repairs on electrical appliances may only be carried
out by qualified personnel. Incorrect repairs can result in considerable danger for the user. Please contact our factory customer service only or a repair workshop approved by us. Only original AEG spare parts fulfil all requirements.

The special spin-dry system
Ribs
The ÖKO-system
Your new ÖKO LAVAMAT from the AEG ÖKO System fulfils all current and future requirements of modern wash care and enables an individual and multiple choice of programmes. The most economical use of water, power and detergent contributes to environmental relief and ensures the best economy.
The electronically controlled high speed spin dry into cycle with intermediate spins after the main wash and the 3 rinse cycles for high temperature and colour wash programmes ensures very low water consumption. After the wash cycle, the spin cycle is controlled by the suds recognition system. If necessary, the spin cycle is stopped until the suds have been pumped away. A special rinse cycle can be added.
The ribs in the wash drum continuously carry the water to the top. This ensures an intense and balanced soaking of the wash.
Water presoftening
Automatic water level control
Packing
Water pre-softening through a two-stage addition of special softener and detergent enables ecological washing in hard water areas.
The automatic water level control matches water consumption to the quantity of the wash and type of fabric.
All materials used are biodegradable. They can be disposed of without danger or burnt in rubbish incinerators. Note on the materials : the plastics can be used again and
are marked as follows: >PE< for polyethylene, e.g. the outer covering and the bags on the inside. >PS< for polystyrol foam, e.g. the padding, totally free from FCKW. The carton is made from used paper and should be deposited in the used paper collection.
Page 7
For the sake of the environment ...
These instructions will help you to act in an environmentally conscious manner :
For normally soiled washes, programmes without prewash are provided. Compared to a programme with pre-wash, you save on water and detergent. Only use detergent with bleach additive if the wash is soiled with spots which can be bleached. Bleaches are particularly effective at high temperatures. Consumption of the machine is most favourable when it is full. For light to normally soiled washes, the saving programme is often sufficient; it uses lower temperatures which are maintained for longer periods. Spots and stains can be removed by appropriate pretreatment. This saves a programme for heavily soiled clothes. Use the detergent exactly as advised by the manufacturer. Too much "wastes" your money and is bad for the environment. Follow the instructions for lightly soiled garments. Savings on detergent and for the environment may also be achieved if with medium to hard water you add sufficient detergent for soft water and then add separately a softener. This relieves our waters of a certain amount of chemicals. Use fabric softener only when necessary, e.g. with synthetic mixed fabrics, to avoid static charging. If you use a dryer, your wash will be soft and fluffy even without fabric softener.

Before the wash
Sort the washing
Check that the fabrics are machine washable. This information is provided by the usual international washing symbols :
High temperature wash
Coloured wash
Synthetics
Delicate fabrics
Wool
Sort the wash according to type, degree of soiling and temperature.
Woollen items with only the Wool symbol are not suitable for machine washing. To wash woollen items,
the additional note “does not mat” or “machine washable” is necessary.
The items with the following symbols are unsuitable for machine washing :
Hand wash
Do not wash
Dry clean
Do not dry clean
Bleach possible
Do not bleach
Observe the recommendation “wash separately".
Page 13
New, dark coloured items often have an excess of dye. During the wash, this can be transferred to lighter coloured fabrics. It is better to wash such items separately the first time.
Treat stains as soon as possible, while they are still fresh, with water, soap or appropriate pre-wash treatment (stain spray, pre-wash paste etc)
Empty Pockets
In particular, remove metallic objects (paper clips, safety pins etc.) Button pillow slips. Close zip fasteners, hooks and eyelets. Tie loose belts and apron strings together. Worked coloured fabrics, wool and fabrics with attached decorations should be turned inside-out. Small and delicate objects (e.g. baby socks, stockings) can be easily washed inside a small pillowcase with a zip fastener or in larger socks.
Treat curtains with particular care
They can be damaged simply by open windows or on being removed (so-called “runs”). Place small metal rings or edged plastic rings in a net or bag. We can in no case assume responsibility for damage. Only spin-dry curtains if it is approved by the manufacturer.
Pre-wash treatment
Care with certain fabrics
Maximum load
High temperature/colour wash 4,5 kg normally soiled Synthetics and delicates 2,0 kg Wool 1,0 kg Short programme for high temperature/ 2,5 kg colour wash Short programme for synthetics 2,0 kg
Loading (Maximum quantity of dry washing)
Page 14
Notice for Test Institutes :
For tests similar to IEC 456 (new) with standard load A the maximum load is 4,05 kg.
Whenever possible, wash with a full load as this ensures maximum efficiency. Do not overfill. This has a negative result on the washing results. With synthetics articles particularly prone to creasing, you should reduce the load.
Opening the washing machine
Loading
To open the drum, press the button on the drum lid, press the drum lid down and open slowly. Load the washing and then close the drum and washing machine lids. Caution: before closing the appliance lid check that the drum lid is properly closed.
As far as possible, mix large and small articles in the wash. This improves washing efficiency and makes for more efficient distribution of the wash during spin drying. Do not load folded washing.
Page 15
Detergent
You may use all modern detergents suited to domestic washing machines. The use of the detergent depends on the type of wash and the degree of soiling.
Soiling is differentiated according to :
Dirt, e.g. dust, soot, sweat, grease etc. Bleachable stains, e.g. red wine, fruit, vegetables
etc. Protein stains, e.g. blood, milk etc.
The different types of washing products are :
Washing powders containing bleach Liquid detergents, not containing bleach Colour and delicate detergents, not containing
bleach, often also not containing optical brighteners, gentle on fabrics Wool detergents, free of bleach and enzymes, particularly gentle on wool fibres Curtain detergents with light proof optical brighteners to avoid yellowing through the effect of sun light.
Choice of detergent
“Kit” detergents
These allow separate dosing of basic detergent, water softener and bleach and stain removers.
Water softeners for softening of the mains water Bleach or stain removers, for localised use on
stained articles or as an additive when using bleachfree detergents.
Pre-treatment for localized use on stains Fabric softeners prevent electrostatic charge build up
on synthetic fabrics and gives the wash a soft feel Starch and fabric conditioners give body to the fabrics and facilitate ironing Dyes and dye removers may only be used if authorized by the manufacturers of these products
Page 16
Detergent Quantities
The quantity of detergent used depends on the size of the wash, the hardness of the water and the degree of soiling. Follow the instructions on the detergent packet. Your local water supply company can supply information concerning the hardness of the water.
Water hardness
Degree dH mmol/L
I - soft below 8 below 1,4 II - medium hard 8 - 14 1,4 - 2,5 III - hard 15 - 21 2,6 - 3,7 IV - very hard over 21 over 3,7
If the detergent manufacturer gives no quantity indications for reduced loads, use half less for a half load, and for small loads one third of the quantity for a full load.
Page 17
Your ÖKO-LAVAMAT is equipped with a particularly efficient water softener, through two-stage addition of water softener and detergent. For washes without a prewash cycle, this allows the separate addition of softener and detergent. This enables a saving in detergent and noticeable improvement in discharge water quality.
The two-stage addition ensures that first the water softener is added. Only then is the detergent added, reacts with the softened water and is immediately effective for dissolving dirt. This ensures that wash results are always perfect despite very economical use of detergent.
The softener quantity should be added in accordance with water hardness, following the instructions on the softener packet, less 20% which can be saved on account of the optimum effectiveness of the water pre-softening. Detergent in this case should always be in quantities required for water hardness I - “soft” in accordance with the instructions on the packet.
You can also use programmes with a pre-wash cycle in an environmentally conscious manner. Add the detergent and softener together in the pre-wash and main wash compartments.
Water Softening
Of course, you can also use normal detergent without softener, adding the quantities recommended on the packet in accordance with the degree of hardness of the water.

Adding Detergent
Adding powders
Adding liquid detergent
There are three compartments in the detergent and additive dispenser.
Compartment 1 = softener for programmes
without pre-wash; washing powder and powder softener for programmes with pre-wash or soak.
Compartment 2 = washing powder for the main
wash ; for programmes with pre-wash, also the softener.
Compartment 3 = Liquid additives (fabric softener
and conditioner, starch)
Please note the following :
For programmes with pre-wash and addition of detergent and softener in the same compartment, first add the detergent, then the softener.
If you prefer liquid detergent, please use the measuring cups supplied by detergent manufacturers. Add the detergent in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. When using liquid softener, follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Page 19
Fill the additive compartment only up to the “MAXI” level, otherwise the additive will spill over prematurely and without any effect into the machine. When using thick softener concentrate and starch, it is recommended to top up the compartment to the “MAXI” level with water. If you wish to use starch in powder form, dissolve it according to the maker’s recommendations and pour the solution into the compartment. Choose the “fabric softener” programme.
Adding liquid additives
Page 20
Choosing the wash programme
The wash programme is chosen with the programme selector, the temperature adjustment knob and the buttons.
For normally soiled articles, choose a programme without pre-wash. For dirty articles choose a programme with pre-wash or use the “intensive” button (refer to the button description). For protein based stains (blood, cocoa), we recommend a programme with pre-wash. For heavily stained articles (fruit, vegetables, tea) press the INTENSIVE button.

SOAKING
SHORT PROGRAMME
Spin speed 1000/700 push button
VARIOMATIC
For wool and wash and wear programmes, the “SOAKING” button enables a soaking of the wash at 40° or a lower temperature (set using the temperature selector). The soaking programme ends with a rinse hold. To continue the programme, press the soaking button again. After a spin cycle, washing begins automatically.
This feature provides a quick wash cycle for lightly soiled articles.
You may reduce spin dry speed with this button. If you do not press this button, spinning takes place at maximum speed. For synthetics, delicate and wool programmes, spin speed is automatically limited to 850 r.p.m.
For high temperature/colour washes
Instead of the normal spin cycle, a VARIOMATIC spin cycle is carried out. Spinning takes place in a number of stages and the clothes are separated between each stage and at the end.
For synthetics articles
The normal rinse hold is removed. A short VARIOMATIC spin cycle follows.
For delicates and wool
The normal rinse hold is removed. A single short spin cycle follows.
SYNTHETICS
INTENSIVE
This button enables the choice of the synthetics programme. Temperature is limited to 60°C. The synthetics programme ends with a rinse hold.
This feature increases the wash “efficiency” by lengthening the wash time after the heating phase.
Page 23
End of programme
At the end of the programme, the machine can be opened. Buttons which may have been set should be released by pushing again. Press out the ON/OFF button. The washing machine is switched off. Remove the washing. Check that the drum is completely empty, as otherwise articles could be damaged in the next wash cycle (e.g. shrinking) or could colour other articles.
Extra rinse
Your ÖKO-LAVAMAT is set for an extremely economical use of water. However, you can add an additional rinse cycle. Water consumption and programme times are thereby increased.
Opening the lid switching off
Adding an additional fourth rinse cycle
The switch is situated on the upper right hand side of the back panel of the machine.

Maintenance and care
Clean the dispenser compartment from time to time to remove remaining detergent.
The wash drum is made of rust free stainless steel. Rusty objects not removed from the wash can cause rust spots to appear on the drum. These spots can be removed using stainless steel cleaner. The customer service has suitable products available.
When correct quantities of detergent are used, descaling of the machine is hardly necessary. If need be, use only brand name descaling products with corrosion protection, designed for washing machines. The customer service has suitable products available.
The control panel and controls should be cleaned in case of need only with lukewarm water.

Cleaning the fluff filter
Regular cleaning of the fluff filter is important
If you wash articles containing a lot of fluff, clean the filter after every wash. Place the water discharge hose in a flat container placed on the ground, to completely empty the machine.
- Open the trap door on the front side of the machine by pressing on the left side.
- Pull out the extractable gutter
- Unscrew the filter in an anti-clockwise direction and remove it
- Clean the fluff filter under running water
- Replace the fluff filter, taking care that the edges are inserted into the grooves
- Screw it back on tightly
- Push in the extractable gutter and close the trap door.
Page 29
What to do if ...
... The washing machine does not work at all ?
Is the machine connected to the power supply? Was a programme selected? Was the ON button pushed? Are all the lids closed?
... No water runs in ?
Is the water tap open? Is the filter in the water inlet blocked ?
... The spin cycle begins after a delay ?
The electronic balance control system of the ma chine has operated due to unfavourable distribution of the wash. The wash is separated by reversing movements of the drum, redistributed and the spin cycle begins again. This can occur several times until the unbalance is removed and spinning can finally begin.
... The washing machine vibrates or does not stand
still?
With very small loads (e.g. only a bathing costume) the machine may vibrate. This has no effect on operation. Are the adjustable feet properly adjusted? Follow the instructions for installation Is the discharge hose bent ? Are the transport securings completely removed ? Follow the instructions for installation
... The spin speed varies and is irregular ?
The electronic foam control has temporarily reduced spin speed due to strong suds build-up, in order to remove the foam. Spinning will start again afterwards. Check detergent quantities at the next wash.
... The sound of the machine is unusual ?
The machine has a modern transmission system, which has a different sound compared to older transmissions, and resembles a whistling sound. The new transmis sion system enables smooth spin starts and a regular high speed spin. Level operation is improved and water consumption reduced.
... The detergent in the main wash foams strongly ?
Was too much, or the wrong detergent used ? Check the quantities added more precisely.
Problems you can solve yourself
Page 30
... Water runs out from under the machine ?
Is the inlet hose connector loose ? Is the hose clamp on the discharge hose loose ? Is the discharge hose damaged ? Is the fluff filter cover properly closed ?
... The wash results are not as usual ?
Was the wrong quantity or the wrong detergent added ? Insufficient detergent leads to grey washes and scale deposits in the machine. Check the quantities more exactly. Were special stains pre-treated ? Were programme and temperature correctly chosen?
... Despite pre-treatment, stains are not removed ?
They may be stains which cannot be removed by washing. Ask a specialist.
... Grey traces are found on the finished wash ?
Too little detergent was used for articles stained by ointment, grease or oil. The quantity of detergent is insufficient to dissolve grease. Was the temperature chosen too low ?
... Traces of fabric softener are found on the finished
wash ?
In such cases, usually fabric softener, in particular in concentrated form, has gone directly into the wash outside of the machine. Such spots should be washed out as quickly as possible.
... At the end of the programme, there are white
detergent deposits on the wash ?
It is usually a case of insoluble elements of modern detergents. They are not the result of insufficient rinsing. Possible solution: brush out or shake out, or turn articles inside out for washing.
... After the final rinse cycle, suds are still visible ?
Modern detergents can cause suds even in the last rinse cycle, but this has no influence on the rinse results.
... The wash is not spun sufficiently and there is
water remaining in the drum ?
Is the discharge hose bent ? Has the maximum height of the discharge hose of 1m been exceeded?
