INSTALLATION PROCEDURES:
This adapter plate will adapt a Dodge standard duty gas type NV4500 5 speed directly to the original Jeep AX4 or AX5 bellhousing. The new transmission input shaft is long enough to maintain the proper clutch spline engagement. The pilot bushing must be changed to fit the new input shaft. The hydraulic release bearing should be replaced according to all Jeep service manuals. The Jeep replacement item number is #83503384. DO NOT ATTEMPT to use the Dodge heavy duty transmission diesel version for this installation.
ASSEMBLY PROCEDURES:
1. Modify your front bearing retainer as per the drawing on page 3. Assemble the new bearing retainer onto the front of the transmission using new 5/16"hex head bolts provided. Make sure that bolts do not protrude into the gear box area and cause gear damage.
2. Modify the stock Jeep bellhousing for slave cylinder hose clearance.
3. Adapter plate must be installed to the bellhousing using the two special dowels.
4. Install the nine (9) flat head bolts into the bellhousing using 15-20 ft./lbs. of torque.
5. Assemble the transmission to the adapter plate using the new bolts provided.
6. Install the new split pin into the steel plate in order to keep hydraulic bearing from rotating.
7. Trial fit the slave cylinder into the bellhousing and make sure that hoses have adequate clearance through the bellhousing.
8. The pilot bushing in the AMC engine crank must be replaced with the new bushing supplied.
9. The clutch disc for the original 4 cylinder installation used a 1"-14 spline size and the new transmission requires a 1-1/8"-10 spline. Centerforce clutch disc Part No. 383824 will be required for the new installation.
10. The input gear of the NP231 transfer case will need to be changed from 21 spline to 23 spline in order for the new

11. If you would like to eliminate the internal hydralic release bearing design, you could upgrade to the 1995-96 Jeep design that uses an external slave cylinder. This would require kit # 712559, and a new bellhousing, slave cylinder, throw out bearing and clutch arm. The only difference with the adapter is the front bearing retainer on the new
transmission.
