GM TURBO 400 TO NEW PROCESS 208
TRANSFER CASES (32 Splines)
GM TURBO 400 3 SPEED AUTOMATIC
The GM TH400 has a case length of 24-3/4", 13 bolts for holding the oil pan in position and is available in 3 different engine-to-transmission bolt patterns. Make sure you have selected the proper TH400 for your particular engine. The rear side of the transmission case will have a hex shaped bolt pattern that uses 6 bolts. There are several various lengths of output shafts that were available for this transmission, and this will not affect the new Advance Adapters output shaft that will need to be installed in the TH400. The new shaft supplied with your kit should be installed by a competent mechanic. The speedometer gear is normally located in the tailhousing, but when adapting this transmission to the transfer case, the location will change to the backside of the transfer case. The rear transmission support will now be located on the new adapter housing or, in some cases, on the transfer case.
All installations will require the use of a transmission cooler. The cooler can be either installed in the radiator or a remote location is acceptable. The transmission shift control should be a floor mounted type shifter, or sometimes the existing column shift can be modified if your vehicle was previously equipped with an automatic transmission.
On the side of the TH400 case, you will find a 1-15/16" hole that must be plugged with the soft plug provided in the kit. We recommend that you use a good sealer when installing the soft plug in order to prevent any possible leakage.
The vacuum modulator line will need to be shortened and rerouted to the right front side of the transmission. A stock GM flexplate and a stock TH400 torque converter can be used. The transmission dipstick must be from the TH400 application.
This kit is made to replace the 89mm and SM465 4 speed manual transmissions and to be used a TH400 transmission. The adapter length is such that, in most cases, driveshaft modifications can be eliminated. The special output shaft is made so it will fit perfectly into the female drive gear in the NP208 transfer case. Vehicles equipped with computer controls may not be compatible with this adapter. The new TH400 shaft has been re-manufactured from a standard shaft with a new piece of material being interfaced welded. The speedometer gear area is not used on applications that have 4WD, since the speedometer gear is in the transfer case. The original transfer case shift linkage can be reused with the TH400 with very little adjustment if any. The kit is provided with a new "O" ring gasket set for use between the adapter and transmission, and a gasket is furnished for the adapter to transfer case seal.
The adapter casting is compatible with all crossmembers after 1985. Prior to 1985, the factory adapter tailhousing were considerably longer and used a deeper crossmember between the two frame rails. If you are replacing a transmission prior to 1985 that had the long foot, you will need to either replace the crossmember to the newer style or fabricate a spacer between the original crossmember and the newer adapter housing.
