FORD T&C 3 SPEED TO
JEEP & SCOUT DANA 18/20
FORD NINE BOLT TOP COVER 3 SPEED 1966 & UP:
This kit is designed for the Ford T&C or "Top Loader" 3 speed for installation into Jeep & Scout Dana 20 transfer cases, 1945 to 1979. The overall length of the new transmission will probably require drive shaft modifications.
The Ford 3 speeds were used in the early style Broncos from 1966 to 1977, and various models of Ford cars from 1965 to 1982. These transmissions were referred to as the "RAN", "RAT" or "RAB". Since the main shafts were different, it is very important that you match the correct output shaft with the correct transmission. The RAN and RAB transmissions have a case length of 9-5/8". Both of these transmissions have a 9 bolt tin top cover with the shift linage on the left hand side of the case. These transmissions only require one shift rail clearance hole in the new adapter plate.
Gear Ratios: First Second Third
RAN-RAB 2:99 1:75 1:00 RAT 3:41 1:86 1:00
A new main shaft is supplied with this kit for use with your new 4 speed transmission. Complete disassembly of the transmission must be performed and if unfamiliar with this transmission, a competent mechanic should perform this operation.
When assembling the Advance Adapters new main shaft with the original gears, make sure that all of the gears have sufficient end play for proper lubrication. This should be done while assembling the gears and after assembly to the transfer case. If the shaft that you have received with the kit dos not compare to your original shaft, it is very possible that you may have received or purchased the wrong adapter kit.
The new main shafts position are determined by the fixed gear in the transfer case. If the transfer case gear is not installed properly with the correct bearing, then the position of the new main shaft in your transmission will be incorrect. The clearance hole in the adapter plate must provide adequate depth for the shift rail to fully extend into the housing. It is best to shift all three gears on the work bench prior to assembly into the vehicle in order to make sure the proper depth and clearance has been maintained.
Once the new main shaft has been installed and the adapter housing has been assembled with the appropriate gasket in place, you must then slide the special bushing (716033) into position as illustrated. This special bushing must be used between the two bearings in order to prevent any pre-loading.
Make sure that you install the correct bearing retainer and rear bearing in the back of the new Advance Adapter plate.
P/N 723750 sealed washer is for use under the bolt head that bolts the transfer case to the transmission from the transmission side. By using this special sealed washer, you will be able to prevent any oil seepage from the transfer case.
The transmission will need to be controlled using a Hurst type shifting tower. Advance Adapters Bracket P/N 715506 will mount the tower, and Rod Kit P/N 715631 will supply the necessary rods, levers, and hardware.
