When to Set the Switches
In most cases, you w ill never have to change the
switch blo ck s ett ings. There are, h ow ever, certain
options wh ich do requir e ad jus tment to the switch
block on the ad apt er boar d.
The switch block is on the upper left-hand corner of
the host adap ter boar d.
A table identifyi ng the switch bloc k settings can

be found in Sect ion at the end of this Ins tal lation Guide.
Here are some cases in which the switch block settings should be changed:

separate BIOS address. Or, disable the BIOS on
all but one of the ho st ada pt ers .
Not Controlling SCSI Disk Drives
If you do not want to use the host ad apt er to con-

save up to 60 second s of boot- up t ime. This
would be useful when ru nnin g only SCSI tape or
CD-ROMs , for example.
3Connecting Peripherals
Setting SCSI IDs
Each SCSI device connec ted to a host adapt er mus t
be set to a separate SCSI ID.
Your SCSI peripher al m anu factu rer ’s inst ruc ti ons
should contain di rec tions on how to check and adjust the SCSI IDs of thos e device s.
1. Make sure each devic e to be connected to the hos t
adapter is set to a separate SCSI ID.
2. The AHA-1540CF/ 1542 CF is set to ID 7 by
default. This can eas il y be cha nged with the
SCSISelect utility, as de sc ri bed in Sec ti on .
3. Your first two SCSI h ard disk dr ives are bes t set
to SCSI ID 0 and ID 1.
Connecting Cables
SCSI devices are cabled toget her in a single c ontinuous daisy-cha in of devices, ca lled the SCSI bus.
The bus may ha ve no br anc hes , and m us t run fr om
device-to-devic e in a cont inuo us series . The ho st
adapter need not be at the end of the SCSI bus, unless only one other devic e is on the bus.

Only Single-Ended SCSI devi ces are supported
•
by the AHA-1540CF/1542CF. Di ffer ential SCSI
devices may be dam aged if connect ed to the
AHA-1540CF/1542CF bus. Consult your SCSI
peripheral user documentat ion .
If your system conf igur at ion in clu des bot h int er nal
and external SCS I devic es, the hos t adap ter will be
at the junction between the internal and externa l
peripher als .
1. Lay out your cables and find the pin-1 ele ment of
each cable an d pe rip her al c onne ct or. On in ter -nal cables, pin 1 is usually dist inguished by a
contrasti ng col or on one ed ge of the ribbon cabl e.
External cable conn ector s can onl y be plu gged- in
one way, s o pi n-1 orientation is aut o ma tic .
2. Attach the SCSI cable( s) to the host adap ter and
the peripher als, using either the inter nal and/ or
external connec to r( s).
3. Make sure that pin-1 or ient at ion is maint ain ed
throughout the bus. The AH A-1540CF/1542C F
uses a 50-pin Centronics style external connector, and a standard 50-pin internal connector.
How to Terminate Your SCSI Bus Cable
What is termination?
The first and last physi cal SCSI device s on the
ends of the SCSI bus must have a set of resistors
called terminators. Al l other SCSI devices must
have terminat ors removed/disabled.
The AHA-1540CF/1542CF and most SCS I p eripherals come equip ped wit h buil t-in te rm ina tors that
can be enabled or dis able d. E x a c tly two de v i ces
must be ter minated on the SCSI bu s, one at each end.
Terminating the Host Adapter
The factor y ins ta lled bus ter m inat or s on the AH A1540CF/1542CF ar e ena bled by default. Hos t adap t-
er terminat ion sh ou ld be disabled if you atta ch
SCSI devices to both inter nal and external connectors, sin ce t he hos t adap te r woul d th en be in the
middle of the SCSI bus.
The following t able descr ibe s the th ree poss ible
SCSI device and hos t adap ter (AHA) conf igur ations. Host ada pt er termination should be adjus ted
to suit .
Devices Connected To Host Adapter:
Internal devic es only (AHA at end of cable):On/Enabled
External devices only (AHA at end of cable):On/Enabled

If you need to disab le termination on the
AHA-1540CF/1 542CF , do the following:
1. Complete this phys ic al in st all ati on sect ion.
2. Disable Host Adapte r SCSI T ermin ati on by fo llowing the instructions in Section , Configur-ing the Host Adapter.
Terminating Other SCSI Peripherals
1. Check the manufacturer’s literatu re to deter mine
how to enable or disable SCSI bus termin ati on
on your SCSI periph era l devi ce( s).
2. Install/enable ter minat ion on SCSI devices on the
ends of the SCSI bus (cable).
3. Make sure that termi nat ion is disa bled / disc onnected on devic es in bet ween t hos e at the en ds
of the SCSI bus.
4. Check SCSI cable conne ctions , the y may ha ve
