1. Introduction
Dear customer,
Thank you for choosing an ADAM Audio monitor of the F-Series. ADAM loudspeakers are built for maximum quality reproduction and audio perfection. With the F-series you have selected a precise, high-resolution speaker system that allows you to both evaluate and enjoy audio recordings. This monitor meets highest expectations in sound quality and craftsmanship.
This manual is intended to provide you with information about your new ADAMs. It contains important information regarding safety, setting up, handling, and warranty. We suggest that you read these sections carefully to ensure easy set up and prevent potential problems.
Our F-series nearfield monitors are perfectly suitable for a wide variety of stereo and multi-channel professional applications including small control rooms, desktops, mobile facilities and postproduction edit bays as well as connection to your favourite mp3-players and gaming consoles … in other words, in any situation where a combination of no-compromise sound reproduction and a small footprint is required.
Each loudspeaker of the F-Series consists of a two-way ported active system that uses ADAM’s proprietary X-ART folded ribbon tweeter ensuring full compatibility with the latest expanded high frequency resolution media formats along with a bass/midrange cone driver. There is an individual power amp for each driver with continuous output. The amplifiers of the F5 and F7 models have been optimized for output impedance profiles that are best suited for the associated drivers.
All models of the F-Range are equipped with a signal sensing circuitry. In order to cut power consumption to a minimum when not actually in use this circuitry switches the device into a standby mode when no signal is present at any input for a time longer than approx. 20mins.
The F7 and F5 models have a built-in thermal protection that will mute the output signals in case internal and back panel temperatures should exceed safe limits.
If you have any questions about this or any other of our products, please don’t hesitate to contact us – our support team (support@adam-audio.de) will be happy to assist you in any matter.

2. Quick Start / Connections
2.1 Important Information for set up
After having unpacked your loudspeakers, please allow the system to acclimate to the temperature of the room for approximately an hour.
It is important to ensure the speakers sit firmly on a solid surface!
We recommend that you retain the original packaging, as it is the best way to guarantee safe transportation should the need to do so arise.
Please note that the loudspeakers will take some break-in time to achieve optimum sonic performance.
2.2 Connecting the F5 / F7 speakers
a) Before connecting the loudspeakers to your audio components and the power source make
sure that both the loudspeakers and your audio source are switched off and set the level controls fully counterclockwise.
b) Connect your sound source or mixing console to the speakers. Use either the RCA
(unbalanced), XLR (balanced) or 1/4” TRS (balanced/unbalanced) connectors. In most professional applications XLR/TRS will be the typical choice, while RCA is more common in HiFi applications. Each one of the two loudspeakers has to be connected to one channel of the sound source. Both RCA and XLR/TRS inputs have the same sensitivity.
Please note:
On the F5/F7 the RCA input takes precedence over the XLR/TRS input. Whenever a cable
is plugged into the RCA input, any signal from the XLR/TRS Input is cut off (but still used for signal sensing of the Standby Mode). Therefore, best practice is to connect only one single cable to the input you are actually using.
c) Check if the mains voltage selector of the product matches your local mains voltage range
you use. If this is not the case do not connect the loudspeakers to a power source! Please contact your local dealer or national distributor. Use the included power cables to connect the loudspeaker to the AC sockets.
d) Make sure that the line out level (volume) of your stereo is either at a low level or all the way
off. Then, switch on your audio system.
6
2. Quick Start / Connections
e) On the rear panel of the loudspeakers, set the volume at low level and switch on the mains
switch and wait for about 5 secs. The loudspeaker is now in Standby Mode and armed to automatically switch into Operating Mode as soon a signal is detected at any of the inputs.
f) Turn on your source of music and adjust the volume slowly and carefully until the
loudspeakers switch from Standby into Operating Mode, first using the volume control of your source. If your audio level is still too low, turn up the speaker’s volume control.
Please note:
the signal detector will need about 5 sec. Even with a signal present, the speaker will not immediately switch back on into Operating Mode.
At the front of the F5 and F7 models you will find two LEDs next to the ADAM logo that indicate the following conditions:
GREEN: Operation Mode, main power is present and speaker is active.
DIM RED:
Standby Mode, meaning the speaker has switched to low power mode with automatic signal sensing.
BRIGHT RED + GREEN LED:
Overtemperature condition, the speaker stops putting out sound and will wait some minutes until it cools down to resume operation. The thermal protection will nominally never engage in normal use but may engage when using high output levels over extended periods of time, notably together with high room temperatures and high mains voltages.

3. Speaker Placement
Please make sure that there are no obstacles in the way from the monitor to your ears. You should be able to see the speakers completely.
3.1 Vertical set up
The F-series has been designed for a vertical set up. The speakers must be positioned on a solid surface or a stand. Please note that vibrating parts of nearby objects can mask the sound.
3.2 Horizontal set up
If you choose to use your speakers in horizontal position as indicated below, please make sure that the set up is mirrored/ symmetrical, i.e. that the tweeters both face either the outwards or inwards. This is crucial for a precise stereo signal.
3.3 Tweeter at the height of ears
The Tweeter should be positioned approximately at the height of your ears. In case you need to position the speaker in a significant lower or higher position, the monitor should be angled accordingly.
3.4 The Stereo Triangle
If the loudspeaker is going to be used for stereo applications, the optimum listening position should be at the top of an imaginary equilateral triangle with the two loudspeakers to be placed at the other two points of this triangle. The loudspeakers should be aligned with the listener’s position.

3. Speaker Placement
3.5 Surround Placement
Speaker positioning for multi-channel stereo purposes is ideally based on a circle with speakers placed at 0° (Center), 30° (Front Right), 110° (Rear Right), 250° (Rear Left), 330° (Front Left), with the listener being the circle’s center (Radius between 0.7-2.0 m). This ITU recommended configuration may vary depending on the purpose of the control room (music or film). However, it is recommended to create a symmetrical listening position with the front side and surround speaker pointing to the listener’s ear. The distance to the surrounding walls should be at least 40 cm to avoid early reflections, which can degrade the sound.
3.6 Stand/Wall Mounting
On the F5 and F7 speakers you will find two metric M6 (6 mm) strew threads for stand/wall mounting on the rear side. Further equipment for mounting is also available. Please contact us for more information.
Please mount these loudspeakers onto indoor dry wood/plaster panel walls only. For other wall materials an additional isolation panel is required. The rear panel, and thus the wall mount hardware, is directly connected to the Audio-Ground of the speaker and the source device. Please keep this in mind when using the wall mount option and DO NOT connect the rear panel to anything possibly conductive.

4. Speaker Adjustment
4.1 Controls
On the rear side you will find controls that allow detailed fine-tuning of your loudspeakers to your particular room acoustics and personal listening preferences. The following tips are intended to assist you at using the controls in the best manner.
Please note that using the controls may have a great impact on the overall sound characteristics of your loudspeakers. We recommend using the controls with utmost care and only after several audio tests with familiar recordings.
4.2 EQ > 5kHz
The EQ > 5kHz is a shelving filter, which progressively raises or lowers the frequencies above 5kHz up to ±6 dB (at 20kHz).
4.3 Level
The Level control works for the whole frequency range and lets you adjust the overall volume of the speaker from -∞ dB to +6dB (+12dB for SubF). While the speakers are designed to withstand full power operation with normal music signals there is a slight risk of permanently damaging the tweeter when continuous sine-waves or other test signals at high power and with frequencies above 2kHz are applied. Be careful with this kind of anomalous signals.
4.4 EQ < 300Hz
The EQ < 300Hz is a shelving filter, which progressively raises or lowers the frequencies
below 300Hz up to ±6 dB (at 100Hz). When using a subwoofer, you may want to increase or decrease the sub’s volume accordingly, for a seamless integration with the subwoofer.
4.4 Highpass Filter (80Hz)
If you want to use your F-speakers as satellites in conjunction with the SubF, it is advisable to cut the low frequencies on your monitors which will result in improved clarity and dynamic range since they do not have to deliver large amplitudes. Further, correct phase and magnitude response of the Sub+Sat combination is assured this way for a typical setup.

5. Connecting the SubF Subwoofer
5.1 Connections
On the rear side of the SubF you can find two sets of balanced XLR/TRS combo inputs and unbalanced RCA connectors.
a) Before connecting the subwoofer to your audio components and the power source make
sure that the subwoofer, the loudspeakers and your audio source are switched off and set the level controls fully counterclockwise.
b) Choose your preferred connection as described under 5.2.
c) Check if the mains voltage selector of the product matches your local mains voltage range
you use and check if the installed fuses have the correct ratings for the selected settings. If this is not the case do not connect the subwoofer to a power source! Please contact your local dealer or national distributor. Use the included power cables to connect the SubF to the AC sockets.
d) Make sure that the line out level (volume) of your source is at a low level. Then, switch on
your audio system.
e) On the rear panel of the SubF, set the volume at low level and switch on the mains switch
and wait for about 5 secs. The SubF is now in Standby Mode and armed to automatically switch into Operating Mode as soon a signal is detected at any of the inputs.
f) Turn on your source of music and adjust the volume slowly and carefully until the SubF
switches from Standby into Operating Mode, first using the volume control of your source. Adjust now the bass level to your liking by turning up or down the subwoofer’s volume control.
5.2 Input
Connect the left and right line-level signal from your signal source (preamplifier etc.) to the LEFT and RIGHT INPUT jacks. Use either the combo input for balanced XLR or 1/4“-TRS cables or the unbalanced RCA input jack. When using two subwoofers (one for each stereo channel), connect only the respective channel. Both the RCA and XLR/TRS inputs have the same sensitivity and are wired to sum up the inputs of their respective channel. Note that all four input channels (2x RCA, 2x XLR/TRS) are further summed together to form the signal to be used by the subwoofer channel, both for actual sound output and for signal sensing (for the automatic standby function).
F-Series Manual / english
11
5. Connecting the SubF Subwoofer
5.3 Output To Satellite
Connect the LEFT and RIGHT OUTPUT TO SATELLITE jacks to the inputs of the left and right main powered speakers or the inputs of the amps powering the main speakers. Again, when using two subwoofers (one for each channel), connect only the respective channel. Both the RCA and XLR outputs have the same output level, and do not apply any gain change to the satellite signal. The output is a buffered copy of the input (however, a 80Hz high pass filter may additionally be engaged).
Please note:
The Satellite Outputs are not active (do not carry any signal) when the Subwoofer is in Standby Mode. This means that when both the Subwoofer and the Satellites are in Standby Mode, an input signal is needed.
