General Information
Q: What applications are 3M™ Thinsulate™ High Temperature Acoustic Absorber HT Series intended for? A: Thinsulate High Temperature Absorbers are high performance absorbers designed for use in a variety of engine
compartment applications. where high temperature resistance up is required. A black performance scrim is available for applications requiring resistance to engine fluids.
Q: What is the benefit of Thinsulate High Temperature Acoustic Absorbers in these applications? A: Thinsulate High Temperature Acoustic Absorbers are lighter than most current engine side solutions, helping
reduce vehicle weight.
Q: Can Thinsulate High Temperature Acoustic Absorbers be used as a heat shield around the exhaust system? A: No, typically these applications require even higher temperatures than what Thinsulate High Temperature
Absorber can withstand. The primary benefit of this product is an acoustic absorber and therefore should be used for noise reduction.
Product Performance
Q: How do Thinsulate High Temperature Acoustic Absorbers differ from other Thinsulate brand products for the
temperature resistance?
A: Thinsulate High Temperature Acoustic Absorbers have high temperature resistance and will not disintegrate at
temperatures up to 150ºC for 336 hours or 180°C for 48 hours. Other Thinsulate products have heat resistance up to 120°C.
Q: For the acoustic absorption performance, how do Thinsulate High Temperature Acoustic Absorbers differ
from other Thinsulate brand products?
A: Thinsulate High Temperature Acoustic Absorber products can use high performance black scrims, which offer
resistance to various engine fluids.
Q: Will Thinsulate High Temperature Acoustic Absorbers resist engine fluids? A: Thinsulate High Temperature Acoustic Absorbers are available with scrims designed to resist typical engine
fluids. Application requirements vary by OEM. Please contact your 3M Application Engineer.
Q: Will Thinsulate High Temperature Acoustic Absorbers pass UL 94-V0 (vertical flammability resistance)? A: No, but these products do pass FMVSS302 (horizontal flammability resistance). If vertical flammability is required,
these products cannot be used.
Q: Will Thinsulate High Temperature Acoustic Absorbers have similar physical properties of stiffness and
strength as molded fiberglass?
A: No. Molded fiberglass contains a thermosetting resin which results in a much stronger, higher modulus material
than can be attained via the thermoplastic resins used in Thinsulate High Temperature Acoustic Absorbers. Thinsulate High Temperature Acoustic Absorbers are a lighter-weight, higher performance solution that do not require the special handling associated with fiberglass.
Q: Can Thinsulate High Temperature Acoustic Absorbers be molded into 3D forms?
A: Yes, 3M™ Thinsulate™ Acoustic Absorber HT500C and HT1000C can be molded into 3D parts. For specific
requirements, contact your 3M Application Engineer.
