Seats and Seat Controls

This section tells you about the seats -- how to adjust them, and fold them up and down.

Manual Front Seat

CAUTION:
You can lose control of the vehicle if you try to adjust a manual driver’s seat while the vehicle is moving. The sudden movement could startle and confuse you, or make you push a pedal when you don’t want to. Adjust the driver’s seat only when the vehicle is not moving.
Move the lever located under the front of the manual seat up to unlock it. Slide the seat to where you want it. Then release the lever and try to move the seat with your body to make sure the seat is locked into place.

Manual Lumbar Support (If Equipped)

If your vehicle has this feature, there will be a knob on the outboard side of the driver’s and passenger’s bucket seats.
Turn the knob counterclockwise to increase lumbar support and clockwise to decrease lumbar support.

Power Seats (If Equipped)

If your vehicle has this feature, there will be a control on the outboard side of your seat.
Horizontal Control: Raise or lower the front of the seat by raising or lowering the forward edge of the control.
Raise or lower the rear of the seat by raising or lowering the rear edge of the control. Move the seat forward or rearward by moving the whole control toward the front or the rear of the vehicle.

Moving the whole control up or down raises or lowers the whole seat.
Vertical Control: Move the reclining front seatback forward or rearward by moving the control toward the front or rear of the vehicle.

Power Lumbar Control (If Equipped)

If your vehicle has this feature, it is located on the outboard side of the seat(s).
Press and hold the front of the control until you have the desired lumbar support. T o decrease lumbar support, press and hold the rear of the control.

Memory Seat (If Equipped)

If your vehicle has this feature, the control located on the outboard side of the driver’s seat looks like this.
Use this memory function to save your seat cushion and seatback settings by using the following procedure:
1. Adjust the driver’s seat to a safe and comfortable driving position.
2. Press the SET button and then one of the two numbered memory buttons. You will hear a chime for each button pushed to confirm that your settings have been placed in memory.
3. To program your keyless entry transmitter, if equipped, press the UNLOCK button within five seconds of programming the memory button. You will hear a chime to confirm programming of the transmitter.

When your vehicle is in PARK (P) for an automatic transmission or the parking brake is engaged for a manual transmission, push and release the numbered memory button you just stored. The seat will move to the set position. You will hear one chime.
Pressing the UNLOCK button of a keyless entry transmitter will adjust the seat to the corresponding stored memory position. You will hear one chime.
Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to readjust the seat. The transmitter need not be reprogrammed unless it needs to correspond to the other numbered memory button.
T o set the seat for a second driver, follow the previous steps, but use the other numbered button and the other keyless entry transmitter.
If there is a third driver, use the seat adjuster switch to adjust the seat. Pressing any of the seat adjuster switches, the SET button or pressing the desired memory button twice will cause the seat to stop moving.
If you push the numbered button to adjust the seat and start the vehicle while the seat is still adjusting, adjustment will pause while the ignition is in START. Adjustment will resume after the ignition is in RUN.

Heated Front Seats (If Equipped)

If your vehicle has this feature, the controls are located on the outboard side of the seats.
This feature will quickly heat the lower cushion and lower back of the driver’s and front passenger’s seats for added comfort.
Press the lower part of the switch to turn the heater on low. Press the upper part of the switch to turn the heater on high. Put the switch in the center position to turn the heater off.
The passenger’s safety belt must be engaged for the heated seat feature to work on the passenger’s seat.

Reclining Front Seatbacks

T o adjust a manual seatback, lift the lever on the outboard side of the seat.
Release the lever to lock the seatback where you want it. Pull up on the lever and the seat will go to an upright position.
If your vehicle is equipped with the vertical power seat control described earlier, it allows the seatback to recline also.
But don’t have a seatback reclined if your vehicle is moving.

CAUTION:
Sitting in a reclined position when your vehicle is in motion can be dangerous. Even if you buckle up, your safety belts can’t do their job when you’re reclined like this.
The shoulder belt can’t do its job because it won’t be against your body. Instead, it will be in front of you. In a crash you could go into it, receiving neck or other injuries.
The lap belt can’t do its job either. In a crash the belt could go up over your abdomen. The belt forces would be there, not at your pelvic bones. This could cause serious internal injuries.
For proper protection when the vehicle is in motion, have the seatback upright. Then sit well back in the seat and wear your safety belt properly.

Head Restraints

Head restraints are fixed on some models and adjustable on others. Slide an adjustable head restraint up or down so that the top of the restraint is closest to the top of your ears. This position reduces the chance of a neck injury in a crash.

Seatback Latches

The front seatbacks fold forward to let people get into the back seat or to access the storage area behind the seat.
T o fold a front seatback forward, move the lever located on the side of the seat rearward and pull the seatback forward.

Easy Entry Seat (2-Door Models)

The right front seat of your vehicle makes it easy to get in and out of the rear seat.
1. Tilt the right front seatback completely forward and the whole seat will slide forward.
2. Move the seatback to its original position after someone gets into the rear seat area. Then move the seat rearward until it locks.
CAUTION:
T o return the seatback to the upright position, push the seatback all the way back until the latch catches. If the seatback was reclined before being folded forward, it will return to the reclined position.
CAUTION:
If the seatback isn’t locked, it could move forward in a sudden stop or crash. That could cause injury to the person sitting there. Always press rearward on the seatback to be sure it is locked.

If an easy entry right front seat isn’t locked, it can move. In a sudden stop or crash, the person sitting there could be injured. After you’ve used it, be sure to push rearward on an easy entry seat to be sure it is locked.
Tilt the seatback completely forward and slide the whole seat forward again to get out.

Rear Seats

Your vehicle has a folding rear seat which lets you fold the seatbacks down for more cargo space.
The rear seat release handles are located on the rear of the seatbacks. Push back on the seatbacks as you pull up on the handles. The head restraint will automatically fold out of the way when the seatback is folded down.
T o raise the seatbacks, just lift up the seatbacks and push until they lock in the upright position. Push and pull on the seatbacks to check that the latches have locked in the upright position. If they haven’t, see your dealer for service.
T o return the head restraints to the upright position, reach behind the seats and pull the head restraint up until it locks into position.
On two
-door models with an inside mounted spare tire,
the driver’s side rear seat head restraint must be lifted and held upright as the seatback is raised. Otherwise, the head restraint will hit the spare tire and prevent the seatback from properly latching.
Push and pull on the head restraints to check that they have locked in the upright position. If they haven’t, see your dealer for service.

Safety Belts: They’re for Everyone
This part of the manual tells you how to use safety belts properly. It also tells you some things you should not do with safety belts.
And it explains the air bag system.
CAUTION:
Don’t let anyone ride where he or she can’t wear a safety belt properly. If you are in a crash and you’re not wearing a safety belt, your injuries can be much worse. You can hit things inside the vehicle or be ejected from it. You can be seriously injured or killed. In the same crash, you might not be if you are buckled up. Always fasten your safety belt, and check that your passengers’ belts are fastened properly too.
CAUTION:
It is extremely dangerous to ride in a cargo area, inside or outside of a vehicle. In a collision, people riding in these areas are more likely to be seriously injured or killed. Do not allow people to ride in any area of your vehicle that is not equipped with seats and safety belts. Be sure everyone in your vehicle is in a seat and using a safety belt properly.

In most states and Canadian provinces, the law says to wear safety belts. Here’s why: They work.
You never know if you’ll be in a crash. If you do have a crash, you don’t know if it will be a bad one.
A few crashes are mild, and some crashes can be so serious that even buckled up a person wouldn’t survive. But most crashes are in between. In many of them, people who buckle up can survive and sometimes walk away . Without belts they could have been badly hurt or killed.
After more than 30 years of safety belts in vehicles, the facts are clear. In most crashes buckling up does matter ... a lot!

Why Safety Belts Work

When you ride in or on anything, you go as fast as it goes.
Ta ke the simplest vehicle. Suppose it’s just a seat on wheels.

Put someone on it. Get it up to speed. Then stop the vehicle. The rider
doesn’t stop.

The person keeps going until stopped by something. In a real vehicle, it could be the windshield ...
or the instrument panel ...

or the safety belts! With safety belts, you slow down as the vehicle does.
You get more time to stop. You stop over more distance, and your strongest bones take the forces. That’s why safety belts make such good sense.

A: You could be -- whether you’re wearing a
safety belt or not. But you can unbuckle a safety belt, even if you’re upside down. And your chance of being conscious during and after an accident, so you can unbuckle and get out, is much greater if you are belted.
Q: If my vehicle has air bags, why should I have
to wear safety belts?
A: Air bags are in many vehicles today and will
be in most of them in the future. But they are supplemental systems only; so they work with safety belts system ever offered for sale has required the use of safety belts. Even if you’re in a vehicle that has air bags, you still have to buckle up to get the most protection. That’s true not only in frontal collisions, but especially in side and other collisions.

Q: If I’m a good driver, and I never drive far from
home, why should I wear safety belts?
A: You may be an excellent driver, but if you’re in an
accident and your passengers can be hurt. Being a good driver doesn’t protect you from things beyond your control, such as bad drivers.
Most accidents occur within 25 miles (40 km) of home. And the greatest number of serious injuries and deaths occur at speeds of less than 40 mph (65 km/h).

How to Wear Safety Belts Properly

Adults

This part is only for people of adult size. Be aware that there are special things to know about
safety belts and children. And there are different rules for smaller children and babies. If a child will be riding in your vehicle, see the part of this manual called “Children.” Follow those rules for everyone’s protection.
First, you’ll want to know which restraint systems your vehicle has.
We’ll start with the driver position.

Driver Position

This part describes the driver’s restraint system.

Lap-Shoulder Belt

The driver has a lap-shoulder belt. Here’s how to wear it properly.
1. Close and lock the door.
2. Adjust the seat so you can sit up straight. T o see how, see “Seats” in the Index.
3. Pick up the latch plate and pull the belt across you. Don’t let it get twisted.
The shoulder belt may lock if you pull the belt across you very quickly. If this happens, let the belt go back slightly to unlock it. Then pull the belt across you more slowly.

4. Push the latch plate into the buckle until it clicks. Pull up on the latch plate to make sure it is secure.
If the belt isn’t long enough, see “Safety Belt Extender” at the end of this section.
Make sure the release button on the buckle is positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if you ever had to.
5. T o make the lap part tight, pull down on the buckle end of the belt as you pull up on the shoulder belt.
The lap part of the belt should be worn low and snug on the hips, just touching the thighs. In a crash, this applies force to the strong pelvic bones. And you’d be less likely to slide under the lap belt. If you slid under it, the belt would apply force at your abdomen. This could cause serious or even fatal injuries. The shoulder belt should go over the shoulder and across the chest. These parts of the body are best able to take belt restraining forces.
The safety belt locks if there’s a sudden stop or crash, or if you pull the belt very quickly out of the retractor.

Q: What’s wrong with this?
A: The shoulder belt is too loose. It won’t give nearly
as much protection this way.
CAUTION:
You can be seriously hurt if your shoulder belt is too loose. In a crash, you would move forward too much, which could increase injury. The shoulder belt should fit against your body.

A: The belt is buckled in the wrong place.
CAUTION:
You can be seriously injured if your belt is buckled in the wrong place like this. In a crash, the belt would go up over your abdomen. The belt forces would be there, not at the pelvic bones. This could cause serious internal injuries. Always buckle your belt into the buckle nearest you.

Q: What’s wrong with this?
A: The shoulder belt is worn under the arm. It should
be worn over the shoulder at all times.
CAUTION:
You can be seriously injured if you wear the shoulder belt under your arm. In a crash, your body would move too far forward, which would increase the chance of head and neck injury. Also, the belt would apply too much force to the ribs, which aren’t as strong as shoulder bones. You could also severely injure internal organs like your liver or spleen.

Q: What’s wrong with this?
A: The belt is twisted across the body.
CAUTION:
You can be seriously injured by a twisted belt. In a crash, you wouldn’t have the full width of the belt to spread impact forces. If a belt is twisted, make it straight so it can work properly, or ask your dealer to fix it.

T o unlatch the belt, just push the button on the buckle. The belt should go back out of the way.
Before you close the door, be sure the belt is out of the way . If you slam the door on it, you can damage both the belt and your vehicle.

Safety Belt Use During Pregnancy

Safety belts work for everyone, including pregnant women. Like all occupants, they are more likely to be seriously injured if they don’t wear safety belts.
A pregnant woman should wear a lap-shoulder belt, and the lap portion should be worn as low as possible, below the rounding, throughout the pregnancy.

The best way to protect the fetus is to protect the mother. When a safety belt is worn properly, it’s more likely that the fetus won’t be hurt in a crash. For pregnant women, as for anyone, the key to making safety belts effective is wearing them properly.
Here are the most important things to know about the air bag system:

Right Front Passenger Position

To learn how to wear the right front passenger’s safety belt properly, see “Driver Position” earlier in this section.
The right front passenger’s safety belt works the same way as the driver’s safety belt -- except for one thing. If you ever pull the shoulder portion of the belt out all the way, you will engage the child restraint locking feature. If this happens, just let the belt go back all the way and start again.

Air Bag System

This part explains the air bag system. Your vehicle has air bags -- one air bag for the driver
and another air bag for the right front passenger. Frontal air bags are designed to help reduce the risk of
injury from the force of an inflating air bag. But these air bags must inflate very quickly to do their job and comply with federal regulations.
You can be severely injured or killed in a crash if you aren’t wearing your safety belt have air bags. Wearing your safety belt during a crash helps reduce your chance of hitting things inside the vehicle or being ejected from it. Air bags are “supplemental restraints” to the safety belts. All air bags are designed to work with safety belts, but don’t replace them. Air bags are designed to work only in moderate to severe crashes where the front of your vehicle hits something. They aren’t designed to inflate at all in rollover, rear, side or low crashes. And, for unrestrained occupants, air bags may provide less protection in frontal crashes than more forceful air bags have provided in the past. Everyone in your vehicle should wear a safety belt properly not there’s an air bag for that person.

CAUTION:
Air bags inflate with great force, faster than the blink of an eye. If you’re too close to an inflating air bag, as you would be if you were leaning forward, it could seriously injure you. Safety belts help keep you in position before and during a crash. Always wear your safety belt, even with air bags. The driver should sit as far back as possible while still maintaining control of the vehicle.

Neither the vehicle’s safety belt system nor its air bag system is designed for them. Young children and infants need the protection that a child restraint system can provide. Always secure children properly in your vehicle. To read how, see the part of this manual called “Children.”
There is an air bag readiness light on the instrument panel, which shows the air bag symbol.
Anyone who is up against, or very close to, any air bag when it inflates can be seriously injured or killed. Air bags plus lap the best protection for adults, but not for young children and infants.

The system checks the air bag electrical system for malfunctions. The light tells you if there is an electrical problem. See “Air Bag Readiness Light” in the Index for more information.

How the Air Bag System Works

Where are the air bags?
The driver’s air bag is in the middle of the steering wheel.
The right front passenger’s air bag is in the instrument panel on the passenger’s side.

CAUTION:
If something is between an occupant and an air bag, the bag might not inflate properly or it might force the object into that person. The path of an inflating air bag must be kept clear. Don’t put anything between an occupant and an air bag, and don’t attach or put anything on the steering wheel hub or on or near any other air bag covering.
When should an air bag inflate?
An air bag is designed to inflate in a moderate to severe frontal or near only if the impact speed is above the system’s designed “threshold level.” If your vehicle goes straight into a wall that doesn’t move or deform, the threshold level is about 9 to 16 mph (14 to 26 km/h).

The threshold level can vary, however, with specific vehicle design, so that it can be somewhat above or below this range. If your vehicle strikes something that will move or deform, such as a parked car, the threshold level will be higher. The air bag is not designed to inflate in rollovers, side impacts or rear impacts, because inflation would not help the occupant.
In any particular crash, no one can say whether an air bag should have inflated simply because of the damage to a vehicle or because of what the repair costs were. Inflation is determined by the angle of the impact and how quickly the vehicle slows down in frontal or near
-frontal impacts.
The air bag system is designed to work properly under a wide range of conditions, including off Observe safe driving speeds, especially on rough terrain. As always, wear your safety belt. See “Off Driving” in the Index for more tips on off

What makes an air bag inflate?
In an impact of sufficient severity, the air bag sensing system detects that the vehicle is in a crash. The sensing system triggers a release of gas from the inflator, which inflates the air bag. The inflator, air bag and related hardware are all part of the air bag modules inside the steering wheel and in the instrument panel in front of the right front passenger.
How does an air bag restrain?
In moderate to severe frontal or near even belted occupants can contact the steering wheel or the instrument panel. Air bags supplement the protection provided by safety belts. Air bags distribute the force of the impact more evenly over the occupant’s upper body , stopping the occupant more gradually. But air bags would not help you in many types of collisions, including rollovers, rear impacts and side impacts, primarily because an occupant’s motion is not toward those air bags. Air bags should never be regarded as anything more than a supplement to safety belts, and then only in moderate to severe frontal or near
-frontal collisions.

What will you see after an air bag inflates?
After an air bag inflates, it quickly deflates, so quickly that some people may not even realize the air bag inflated. Some components of the air bag module air bag, or the instrument panel for the right front passenger’s bag -- will be hot for a short time. The parts of the bag that come into contact with you may be warm, but not too hot to touch. There will be some smoke and dust coming from vents in the deflated air bags. Air bag inflation doesn’t prevent the driver from seeing or from being able to steer the vehicle, nor does it stop people from leaving the vehicle.

CAUTION:
When an air bag inflates, there is dust in the air. This dust could cause breathing problems for people with a history of asthma or other breathing trouble. To avoid this, everyone in the vehicle should get out as soon as it is safe to do so. If you have breathing problems but can’t get out of the vehicle after an air bag inflates, then get fresh air by opening a window or door.

Air bags are designed to inflate only once. After they inflate, you’ll need some new parts for your air bag system. If you don’t get them, the air bag system won’t be there to help protect you in another crash. A new system will include air bag modules and possibly other parts. The service manual for your vehicle covers the need to replace other parts.

Your vehicle is equipped with a diagnostic module, which records information about the air bag system. The module records information about the readiness of the system, when the system commands air bag inflation and driver’s safety belt usage at deployment.

Let only qualified technicians work on your air bag system. Improper service can mean that your air bag system won’t work properly. See your dealer for service.
NOTICE:
If you damage the covering for the driver’s or the right front passenger’s air bag, the bag may not work properly. You may have to replace the air bag module in the steering wheel or both the air bag module and the instrument panel for the right front passenger’s air bag. Do not open or break the air bag coverings.

Servicing Your Air Bag-Equipped Vehicle

Air bags affect how your vehicle should be serviced. There are parts of the air bag system in several places around your vehicle. You don’ t want the system to inflate while someone is working on your vehicle. Your dealer and the service manual have information about servicing your vehicle and the air bag system. To purchase a service manual, see “Service and Owner Publications” in the Index.
CAUTION:
For up to 10 minutes after the ignition key is turned off and the battery is disconnected, an air bag can still inflate during improper service. You can be injured if you are close to an air bag when it inflates. Avoid wires wrapped with yellow tape or yellow connectors. They are probably part of the air bag system. Be sure to follow proper service procedures, and make sure the person performing work for you is qualified to do so.
The air bag system does not need regular maintenance.

Adding Equipment to Your Air Bag-Equipped Vehicle

Q: If I add a push bumper or a bicycle rack to
the front of my vehicle, will it keep the air bags from working properly?
A: As long as the push bumper or bicycle rack is
attached to your vehicle so that the vehicle’s basic structure isn’t changed, it’s not likely to keep the air bags from working properly in a crash.
Q: Is there anything I might add to the front of
the vehicle that could keep the air bags from working properly?
A: Yes. If you add things that change your vehicle’s
frame, bumper system, front end sheet metal or height, they may keep the air bag system from working properly. Also, the air bag system may not work properly if you relocate any of the air bag sensors. If you have any questions about this, you should contact Customer Assistance before you modify your vehicle. Lap Belt

If your vehicle has a front bench seat, someone can sit in the center position.

When you sit in the center front seating position, you have a lap safety belt, which has no retractor. To make the belt longer, tilt the latch plate and pull it along the belt.

Rear Seat Passengers

It’s very important for rear seat passengers to buckle up! Accident statistics show that unbelted people in the rear seat are hurt more often in crashes than those who are wearing safety belts.
Rear passengers who aren’t safety belted can be thrown out of the vehicle in a crash. And they can strike others in the vehicle who are wearing safety belts.

Rear Seat Outside Passenger Positions

Lap-Shoulder Belt
The positions next to the windows have lap belts. Here’s how to wear one properly.
1. Pick up the latch plate and pull the belt across you. Don’t let it get twisted. The shoulder belt may lock if you pull the belt across you very quickly. If this happens, let the belt go back slightly to unlock it. Then pull the belt across you more slowly.

2. Push the latch plate into the buckle until it clicks. Pull up on the latch plate to make sure it is secure. When the shoulder belt is pulled out all the way,
it will lock. If it does, let it go back all the way and start again.
If the belt is not long enough, see “Safety Belt Extender” at the end of this section.
Make sure the release button on the buckle is positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if you ever had to.
3. T o make the lap part tight, pull down on the buckle end of the belt as you pull up on the shoulder part.

The lap part of the belt should be worn low and snug on the hips, just touching the thighs. In a crash, this applies force to the strong pelvic bones. And you’d be less likely to slide under the lap belt. If you slid under it, the belt would apply force at your abdomen. This could cause serious or even fatal injuries. The shoulder belt should go over the shoulder and across the chest. These parts of the body are best able to take belt restraining forces.
The safety belt locks if there’s a sudden stop or a crash. The safety belt also locks if you pull the belt very
quickly out of the retractor.
CAUTION:
You can be seriously hurt if your shoulder belt is too loose. In a crash, you would move forward too much, which could increase injury. The shoulder belt should fit against your body.

Rear Safety Belt Comfort Guides for Children and Small Adults (4
-Door Models)
Four-door models have rear shoulder belt comfort guides. This feature will provide added safety belt comfort for older children who have outgrown booster seats and for small adults. When installed on a shoulder belt, the comfort guide better positions the belt away from the neck and head.
There is one guide for each outside passenger position in the rear seat. T o provide added safety belt comfort for children who have outgrown child restraints and for smaller adults, the comfort guides may be installed on the shoulder belts. Here’s how to install a comfort guide and use the safety belt:

1. Pull the elastic cord out from between the edge of the seatback and the interior body to remove the guide from its storage clip.
2. Slide the guide under and past the belt. The elastic cord must be under the belt. Then, place the guide over the belt, and insert the two edges of the belt into the slots of the guide.

3. Be sure that the belt is not twisted and it lies flat. The elastic cord must be under the belt and the guide on top.

4. Buckle, position and release the safety belt as described in “Rear Seat Outside Passenger Positions” earlier in this section. Make sure that the shoulder belt crosses the shoulder.
T o remove and store the comfort guides, squeeze the belt edges together so that you can take them out from the guides. Pull the guide upward to expose its storage clip, and then slide the guide onto the clip. Turn the guide and clip inward and in between the seatback and the interior body, leaving only the loop of the elastic cord exposed.

Children

Everyone in a vehicle needs protection! This includes infants and all other children. Neither the distance traveled nor the age and size of the traveler changes the need, for everyone, to use safety restraints. In fact, the law in every state in the United States and in every Canadian province says children up to some age must be restrained while in a vehicle.

Infants and Young Children

Every time infants and young children ride in vehicles, they should have the protection provided by the appropriate restraint. Young children should not use the vehicle’s safety belts, unless there is no other choice.

Q: What are the different types of add-on
child restraints?
A: Add-on child restraints, which are purchased
by the vehicle’s owner, are available in four basic types. Selection of a particular restraint should take into consideration not only the child’s weight, height and age but also whether or not the restraint will be compatible with the motor vehicle in which it will be used.
For most basic types of child restraints, there are many different models available. When purchasing a child restraint, be sure it is designed to be used in a motor vehicle. If it is, the restraint will have a label saying that it meets federal motor vehicle safety standards.
The restraint manufacturer’s instructions that come with the restraint state the weight and height limitations for a particular child restraint. In addition, there are many kinds of restraints available for children with special needs.

The body structure of a young child is quite unlike that of an adult or older child, for whom the safety belts are designed. A young child’s hip bones are still so small that vehicle’s regular safety belt may not remain low on the hip bones, as it should. Instead, it may settle up around the child’s abdomen. In a crash, the belt would apply force on a body area that’s unprotected by any bony structure. This alone could cause serious or fatal injuries. Young children always should be secured in appropriate child restraints.

Restraint Systems for Children

An infant car bed (A), a special bed made for use in a motor vehicle, is an infant restraint system designed to restrain or position a child on a continuous flat surface. Make sure that the infant’s head rests toward the center of the vehicle.
A rear-facing infant seat (B) provides restraint with the seating surface against the back of the infant. The harness system holds the infant in place and, in a crash, acts to keep the infant positioned in the restraint.

A forward-facing child seat (C-E) provides restraint for the child’s body with the harness and also sometimes with surfaces such as T

A booster seat (F-G) is a child restraint designed to improve the fit of the vehicle’s safety belt system. Some booster seats have a shoulder belt positioner, and some high harness. A booster seat can also help a child to see out the window.

A: A child restraint system is any device designed for
use in a motor vehicle to restrain, seat, or position children. A built permanent part of the motor vehicle. An add child restraint system is a portable one, which is purchased by the vehicle’s owner.
For many years, add used the adult belt system in the vehicle. T o help reduce the chance of injury, the child also has to be secured within the restraint. The vehicle’s belt system secures the add vehicle, and the add system holds the child in place within the restraint.
One system, the three that come down over each of the infant’s shoulders and buckle together at the crotch. The five harness system has two shoulder straps, two hip straps and a crotch strap. A shield may take the place of hip straps.

When choosing a child restraint, be sure the child restraint is designed to be used in a vehicle. If it is, it will have a label saying that it meets federal motor vehicle safety standards.
Then follow the instructions for the restraint. You may find these instructions on the restraint itself or in a booklet, or both. These restraints use the belt system in your vehicle, but the child also has to be secured within the restraint to help reduce the chance of personal injury. When securing an add instructions that come with the restraint which may be on the restraint itself or in a booklet, or both, and to this manual. The child restraint instructions are important, so if they are not available, obtain a replacement copy from the manufacturer.

Where to Put the Restraint

Accident statistics show that children are safer if they are restrained in the rear rather than the front seat. General Motors, therefore, recommends that child restraints be secured in a rear seat outside position including an infant riding in a rear child riding in a forward child riding in a booster seat. Never put a rear child restraint in the front passenger seat. Here’s why:

Keep in mind that an unsecured child restraint can move around in a collision or sudden stop and injure people in the vehicle. Be sure to properly secure any child restraint in your vehicle

Top Strap

Some child restraints have a top strap, or “top tether.” It can help restrain the child restraint during a collision. For it to work, a top strap must be properly anchored to the vehicle.
If the child restraint does not have a top strap, one can be obtained, in kit form, for many child restraints. Ask the child restraint manufacturer whether or not a kit is available.
In Canada, the law requires that forward-facing child restraints have a top strap, and that the strap be anchored. In the United States, some child restraints also have a top strap. If your child restraint has a top strap, it should be anchored.
Anchor brackets for the rear outside seat positions are located on the floor in the cargo area of your vehicle.

Safety Belt Extender

If the vehicle’s safety belt will fasten around you, you should use it.
But if a safety belt isn’t long enough to fasten, your dealer will order you an extender. It’s free. When you go in to order it, take the heaviest coat you will wear, so the extender will be long enough for you. The extender will be just for you, and just for the seat in your vehicle that you choose. Don’t let someone else use it, and use it only for the seat it is made to fit. T o wear it, just attach it to the regular safety belt.

Checking Your Restraint Systems

Now and then, make sure the safety belt reminder light and all your belts, buckles, latch plates, retractors and anchorages are working properly. Look for any other loose or damaged safety belt system parts. If you see anything that might keep a safety belt system from doing its job, have it repaired.
T orn or frayed safety belts may not protect you in a crash. They can rip apart under impact forces. If a belt is torn or frayed, get a new one right away.
Also look for any opened or broken air bag covers, and have them repaired or replaced. (The air bag system does not need regular maintenance.)

Replacing Restraint System Parts After a Crash

If you’ve had a crash, do you need new belts? After a very minor collision, nothing may be necessary.
But if the belts were stretched, as they would be if worn during a more severe crash, then you need new belts.
If you ever see a label on the driver’s or the right front passenger’s safety belt that says to replace the belt, be sure to do so. Then the new belt will be there to help protect you in a collision. You would see this label on the belt near the door opening.
If belts are cut or damaged, replace them. Collision damage also may mean you will need to have safety belt or seat parts repaired or replaced. New parts and repairs may be necessary even if the belt wasn’t being used at the time of the collision.
If an air bag inflates, you’ll need to replace air bag system parts. See the part on the air bag system earlier in this section.

Leaving children in a vehicle with the windows closed is dangerous. A child can be overcome by the extreme heat and can suffer permanent injuries or even death from heat stroke. Never leave a child alone in a vehicle, especially with the windows closed in warm or hot weather.

The switches operate the windows when the ignition is RUN, ACCESSOR Y or when Retained Accessory Power (RAP) is active. (See “Retained Accessory Power” in the Index.) The driver’s door has a switch for the passenger windows as well.
Press the side of the switch with the down arrow to lower a window. Press the side of the switch with the up arrow to raise the window.

Express-Down Window
The driver’s window has an express that allows you to lower it without holding the window switch. Press the driver’s window switch down briefly to activate the express switch to open the window slightly. The express feature can be interrupted at any time by pressing the up arrow end of the switch.

Keys

CAUTION:
Leaving children in a vehicle with the ignition key is dangerous for many reasons. A child or others could be badly injured or even killed.
They could operate the power windows or other controls or even make the vehicle move. Don’t leave the keys in a vehicle with children.

This vehicle has one double
-sided key for the
ignition, endgate/liftgate, spare tire lock (two-door vehicles) and door locks. It will fit with either side up.
When a new vehicle is delivered, the dealer provides the owner with a pair of identical keys and a key code number.
The key code number tells your dealer or a qualified locksmith how to make extra keys. Keep this number in a safe place. If you lose your keys, you’ll be able to have new ones made easily using this number. Your selling dealer should also have this number.
NOTICE:
Your vehicle has a number of new features that can help prevent theft. But you can have a lot of trouble getting into your vehicle if you ever lock your key inside. You may even have to damage your vehicle to get in. So be sure you have an extra key.

Door Locks

CAUTION:
Unlocked doors can be dangerous.

Passengers -- especially children -- can easily open the doors and fall out of a moving vehicle. When a door is locked, the handle won’t open it. You increase the chance of being thrown out of the vehicle in a crash if the doors aren’t locked. So, wear safety belts properly and lock the doors whenever you drive.
D
Young children who get into unlocked vehicles may be unable to get out. A child can be overcome by extreme heat and can suffer permanent injuries or even death from heat stroke. Always lock your vehicle whenever you leave it.
D
Outsiders can easily enter through an unlocked door when you slow down or stop your vehicle. Locking your doors can help prevent this from happening.
There are several ways to lock and unlock your vehicle:

You can use the keyless entry system, if your vehicle has this feature.
D
You can use your key to unlock your door from the outside.
D
You can use the power lock switch (if equipped) to lock or unlock the doors.
D
T o manually lock a door from the inside, slide the manual lever on your door down. T o manually unlock a door from the inside, slide the lever on the door up. You will see a colored area on the lever when the door is unlocked.

Power Door Locks (If Equipped)

If your vehicle has power door locks, the switches are located on the driver’s and passenger’s front armrests. Remove the ignition key and press LOCK to lock all the doors at once. T o unlock the doors, press the raised area to the right of the key symbol.
On four lever on each rear door to lock or unlock those doors from the rear seating area.

Programmable Automatic Door Locks (If Equipped)

If your vehicle has power door locks, it will be equipped with an auto lock/unlock feature which enables you to program your vehicle’s power door locks.
The following is the list of available programming options:

All doors lock/Driver’s door unlocks only: Press the lock side of the power lock switch on the door panel once and then the unlock side once. This option is unavailable on most vehicles not equipped with keyless entry.
D
All doors lock/All doors unlock: Press the lock side of the power lock switch on the door panel once, and then press the unlock side twice.
D
All doors lock/None of the doors unlock: Press the lock side of the power lock switch on the door panel once, and then press the unlock side of the switch three times.
D
No doors lock/None of the doors unlock: Press the lock side of the power lock switch on the door panel twice. This turns off the automatic lock feature (this is the factory setting).

Your vehicle left the factory programmed to have no doors lock and none of the doors unlock. You can set the automatic lock feature to lock all the doors when the vehicle speed is greater than 15 mph (24 km/h) for two seconds, and then unlock all the doors once the key is removed from the ignition. The following instructions detail how to program your door locks differently than the factory setting. Choose one of the four programming options listed above before entering the program mode.
To enter the program mode you need to do the following:
1. Begin with the ignition in OFF. Then pull the turn signal/multifunction lever toward you and hold it there while you perform the next step.
2. Turn the key to RUN and OFF twice. Then, with the key in OFF, release the turn signal/multifunction lever. Once you do this, you will hear the lock switch lock and unlock and a 30 second program timer will begin.
3. You are now ready to program the automatic door locks. Select one of the four programming options listed above, and follow the instructions. You will have 30 seconds to begin programming. If you exceed the 30 second limit, the locks will automatically lock and unlock to indicate that you have left the program mode. If this occurs, repeat the procedure beginning with Step 1.
You can exit the program mode any time by turning the ignition to RUN (the locks will automatically lock and unlock to indicate that you are leaving the program mode). If the lock/unlock switches are not pressed while in the programming mode, the current auto lock/unlock setting will not be modified.

Rear Door Security Lock (If Equipped)

With this feature, you can lock the rear doors so they can’t be opened from the inside by passengers. T o use the security locks:
The rear doors of your vehicle cannot be opened from the inside when this feature is in use. If you want to open the rear door when the security lock is on, unlock the door and open the door from the outside.

Lockout Prevention

This feature stops the power door locks from locking when the keys are in the ignition and a door is open, to protect you from locking your key in the vehicle.
If the power lock switch is pressed when a door is open and the key is in the ignition, all the doors will lock and the driver’s door will unlock.
1. Open one of the rear doors.
2. You will find a security lock lever on the inside edge of the rear door. Move the lever up to engage the security lock. Move the lever down to disengage the security lock.
3. Close the door.
4. Do the same thing to the other rear door.

Leaving Your Vehicle

If you are leaving the vehicle, take your key, open your door and set the locks from inside. Then get out and close the door.

Keyless Entry System (If Equipped)

If your vehicle has this feature, you can lock and unlock your doors from about 3 feet (1 m) up to 30 feet (9 m) away using the remote keyless entry transmitter supplied with your vehicle.
If your vehicle has this feature, you can lock and unlock your doors and rear endgate from about 3 feet (1 m) up to 30 feet (9 m) away using the remote keyless entry transmitter supplied with your vehicle.
Your keyless entry system operates on a radio frequency subject to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Rules and with Industry Canada.
This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) this device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.

At times you may notice a decrease in range. This is normal for any remote keyless entry system. If the transmitter does not work or if you have to stand closer to your vehicle for the transmitter to work, try this:

Check the distance. You may be too far from your vehicle. You may need to stand closer during rainy or snowy weather.
D
Check the location. Other vehicles or objects may be blocking the signal. T ake a few steps to the left or right, hold the transmitter higher, and try again.
D
Check to determine if battery replacement or resynchronization is necessary. See the instructions that follow.

If you’re still having trouble, see your dealer or a qualified technician for service.

Operation

UNLOCK: When you press UNLOCK, the driver’s
door will unlock automatically, the parking lamps will flash and the interior lamps will go on. If you press UNLOCK again within three seconds, the remaining doors will unlock, the parking lamps will flash and the interior lamps will go on.
LOCK: Press LOCK to lock all the doors. Press LOCK again within three seconds and the horn will chirp.
REAR: When you press the REAR button twice within three seconds to release the rear liftgate glass, the parking lamps will flash and the interior lamps will go on. If your vehicle has an automatic transmission, the transmission must be in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N). If your vehicle has a manual transmission, you must engage the parking brake.
Remote Panic Alarm
When the button with the horn symbol on the key transmitter is pressed, the horn will sound and the headlamps and taillamps will flash for up to 30 seconds. This can be turned off by pressing the horn button again, waiting for 30 seconds, or starting the vehicle.

Matching Transmitter(s) to Your Vehicle

Each remote keyless entry transmitter is coded to prevent another transmitter from unlocking your vehicle. If a transmitter is lost or stolen, a replacement can be purchased through your dealer. Remember to bring any remaining transmitters with you when you go to your dealer. When the dealer matches the replacement transmitter to your vehicle, any remaining transmitters must also be matched. Once your dealer has coded the new transmitter, the lost transmitter will not unlock your vehicle. Each vehicle can have only four transmitters matched to it.

Battery Replacement

Under normal use, the battery in your remote keyless entry transmitter should last about two years.
You can tell the battery is weak if the transmitter won’t work at the normal range in any location. If you have to get close to your vehicle before the transmitter works, it’s probably time to change the battery.

NOTICE:
When replacing the battery, use care not to touch any of the circuitry. Static from your body transferred to these surfaces may damage the transmitter.
T o replace the battery in the keyless entry transmitter do the following:
1. Insert a dime in the slot between the covers of the transmitter housing near the key ring hole. Remove the bottom by twisting the dime.
2. Remove and replace the battery with a three CR2032 or equivalent battery, positive (+) side up.
3. Align the covers and snap them together.
4. Resynchronize the transmitter.
5. Check the operation of the transmitter.

Resynchronization

Resynchronization may be necessary due to the security method used by this system. The transmitter does not send the same signal twice to the receiver. The receiver will not respond to a signal it has been sent previously. This prevents anyone from recording and playing back the signal from the transmitter.
T o resynchronize your transmitter, stand close to your vehicle and press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter at the same time for seven seconds. The door locks should cycle to confirm synchronization. If the locks do not cycle, see your dealer for service.

Endgate/Liftgate

CAUTION:
It can be dangerous to drive with the rear window, endgate or liftgate open because carbon monoxide (CO) gas can come into your vehicle. You can’t see or smell CO. It can cause unconsciousness and even death.
If you must drive with the rear window, endgate or liftgate open or if electrical wiring or other cable connections must pass through the seal between the body and the rear window, endgate or liftgate:
D
Make sure all other windows are shut.
D
Turn the fan on your heating or cooling system to its highest speed with the setting on VENT or OUTSIDE AIR. That will force outside air into your vehicle. See “Comfort Controls” in the Index.
D
If you have air outlets on or under the instrument panel, open them all the way.

Endgate Release

T o open a manual lock system from the outside, insert the key into the lock and turn it counterclockwise to unlock the glass.
T o open a power lock system from the outside, insert the key into the lock button and turn it counterclockwise. All the doors will then unlock.
If your vehicle is equipped with the keyless entry system, your vehicle does not have a lock on the endgate. It is equipped with a pushbutton to release the glass.
You may also use the keyless entry system, or the power door locks (if equipped).

When the doors are unlocked, press the button to open the glass.
Reach inside the endgate to lift the handle and open the endgate.
The endgate can be opened without a key if the driver’s door is unlocked. The endgate glass will not release if the vehicle is in gear.
T o lock a power lock system from the outside, insert the key into the lock button and turn clockwise. All doors will lock.

Liftgate Release

T o open a power lock system from the outside, insert the key into the lock button and turn counterclockwise. All doors will unlock.
If your vehicle is equipped with the keyless entry system, your vehicle does not have a lock on the liftgate. It is equipped with a pushbutton to release the liftglass.
You may also use the keyless entry system, or the power door locks, (if equipped).

The liftglass can be opened using the pushbutton on the liftgate after the driver’s door has been opened using either the power lock system or the keyless entry system.

Remote Rear Glass Release

This button, located to the right of the steering wheel on the instrument panel, allows you to release the rear glass from inside the vehicle.
T o open the entire liftgate, lift the handle located in the center of the door.
T o lock a power lock system from the outside, insert the key into the lock button and turn clockwise. All doors will lock. You may also use the keyless entry system or the power door locks to lock the liftgate and liftglass.

If your vehicle has an automatic transmission, your shift lever must be in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N) for the release to work.
If you have a manual transmission, you must apply your parking brake or have the ignition off before you can open the endgate glass.

Emergency Release for Opening Endgate/Liftgate

1. Peel back or slit the carpet locally to expose the access hole in the trim panel.
2. Use a thin screwdriver to reach through the access holes in both the trim panel and the hardware cover.
3. Pry the release lever toward the passenger’s side until the glass latch pops open.
4. Reattach the carpet securely.

Endgate-Mounted Spare

If your vehicle has an endgate-mounted spare tire carrier, you must move the carrier arm out of the way to open the glass.
Here’s how to move the arm:
1. Squeeze the release handle to free the carrier arm.
2. Swing the carrier arm away from the endgate. You may need to give it a slight tug.
3. T o latch the carrier arm, swing it toward the endgate.

Theft

Vehicle theft is big business, especially in some cities. Although your vehicle has a number of theft features, we know that nothing we put on it can make it impossible to steal. However, there are ways you can help.

Key in the Ignition

If you leave your vehicle with the keys inside, it’s an easy target for joy riders or professional thieves don’t do it.
When you park your vehicle and open the driver’s door, you’ll hear a chime reminding you to remove your key from the ignition and take it with you. Always do this. Your steering wheel will be locked, and so will your ignition. If you have an automatic transmission, taking your key out also locks your transmission. Also remember to lock the doors.

Parking at Night

Park in a lighted spot, close all windows and lock your vehicle. Remember to keep your valuables out of sight. Put them in a storage area, or take them with you.

Parking Lots

Even if you park in a lot where someone will be watching your vehicle, it’s still best to lock it up and take your keys. But what if you have to leave your ignition key? What if you have to leave something valuable in your vehicle?

Put your valuables in a storage area, like your glove box.

If your vehicle has a remote keyless entry system, take the transmitter with you.

Lock all the doors except the driver’s.

Content Theft-Deterrent (If Equipped)

Your vehicle may be equipped with a content theft
-deterrent alarm system.
With this system, the SECURITY light will flash as you open the door (if your ignition is off).
This light reminds you to activate the theft system. Here’ s how to do it:
1. Lock the door with the power door lock switch (door must be open) or with the remote keyless entry transmitter (door can be open or closed). The SECURITY light should come on and stay on.
2. Close all doors. The SECURITY light should go off after approximately 30 seconds. The alarm is not armed until the SECURITY light goes off.

If a door is opened without the key or the keyless entry transmitter, the alarm will go off. Y our vehicle’s headlamps will flash and the horn will sound for 110 seconds, then will turn off to save the battery power.
Remember, the theft you lock the doors with a key or use the manual door lock. It activates only if you use a power door lock switch (with the door open), or with the keyless entry transmitter (door can be open or closed). You should also remember that you can start your vehicle with the correct ignition key if the alarm has been set off.
Here’s how to avoid setting off the alarm by accident:
D
If you don’t want to activate the theft system, the vehicle should be locked with the door key after the doors are closed.
D
Always unlock a door with a key, or use the keyless entry transmitter. Unlocking a door any other way will set off the alarm.
If you set off the alarm by accident, unlock any door with the key. You can also turn off the alarm by pressing UNLOCK on the keyless entry transmitter. The alarm won’t stop if you try to unlock a door any other way.

Testing the Alarm

The alarm can be tested by following these steps:
1. From inside the vehicle, lower the driver’s window and open the driver’s door.
2. Activate the system by locking the doors with the power door lock switch (while the door is open), or with the keyless entry transmitter (with the door open or closed).
3. Get out of the vehicle, close the door and wait for the SECURITY light to go out.
4. Then reach in through the window, unlock the door with the manual door lock and open the door. This should set off the alarm.
If the alarm does not sound when it should, but the vehicle’s headlamps flash, check to see if the horn works. The horn fuse may be blown. T o replace the fuse, see “Fuses and Circuit Breakers” in the Index.
If the alarm does not sound or the vehicle’s headlamps do not flash, the vehicle should be serviced by a dealer.

Passlock

Your vehicle is equipped with the Passlock theft
-deterrent system.
Passlock is a passive theft-deterrent system. Passlock enables fuel if the ignition lock cylinder is turned with a valid key . If a correct key is not used or the ignition lock cylinder is tampered with, fuel is disabled.
During normal operation, the SECURITY light will go off approximately five seconds after the key is turned to RUN.
If the engine stalls and the SECURITY light flashes, wait about 10 minutes until the light stops flashing before trying to restart the engine. Remember to release the key from START as soon as the engine starts.
If the engine does not start after three tries, the vehicle needs service.
If the engine is running and the SECURITY light comes on, you will be able to restart the engine if you turn the engine off. However, your Passlock system is not working properly and must be serviced by your dealer. Your vehicle is not protected by Passlock at this time. You may also want to check the fuse (see “Fuses and Circuit Breakers” in the Index). See your dealer for service.

Your vehicle doesn’t need an elaborate “break-in.” But it will perform better in the long run if you follow these guidelines:

Keep your speed at 55 mph (88 km/h) or less for the first 500 miles (805 km).

Ignition Positions

Use the key to turn the ignition switch to five different positions.
ACCESSORY (A): This position lets you use things like the radio and the windshield wipers when the engine is off. Push in the key and turn it toward you. Your steering wheel will remain locked, just as it was before you inserted the key.

Don’t operate accessories in the ACCESSORY position for long periods of time. Prolonged operation of accessories in the ACCESSORY position could drain your battery and prevent you from starting your vehicle.
LOCK (B): This position locks your ignition, steering
wheel and transmission. It’s a theft You will only be able to remove your key when the ignition is turned to LOCK.

CAUTION:
On manual transmission vehicles, turning the key to LOCK will lock the steering column and result in a loss of ability to steer the vehicle. This could cause a collision. If you need to turn the engine off while the vehicle is moving, turn the key only to OFF. Don’t press the key release button while the vehicle is moving.

If your key seems stuck in LOCK and you can’t turn it, be sure you are using the correct key; if so, is it all the way in? If it is, then turn the steering wheel left and right while you turn the key hard. But turn the key only with your hand. Using a tool to force it could break the key or the ignition switch. If none of this works, then your vehicle needs service.
OFF (C): This position lets you turn off the engine
but still turn the steering wheel. Use OFF if you must have your vehicle in motion while the engine is off (for example, if your vehicle is being towed).
RUN (D): This is the position for driving. START (E): This position starts your engine.

Key Release Button

The key cannot be removed from the ignition of manual transmission vehicles unless the key release button is used.
T o remove the key on manual transmission vehicles, turn the key to OFF. Then turn the key to LOCK while pressing the key release button down at the same time. Pull the key straight out.
On automatic transmission vehicles, turn the key to LOCK and pull it straight out.

Retained Accessory Power (RAP)

Your vehicle is equipped with a Retained Accessory Power (RAP) feature which will allow certain features of your vehicle to continue to work for up to 20 minutes after the ignition key is turned to OFF.
Your radio, power windows, sunroof and overhead console will work when the ignition key is in RUN or ACCESSORY. Once the key is turned from RUN to OFF, these features will continue to work for up to 20 minutes or until a door is opened.

Starting Your Engine

Automatic Transmission

Move your shift lever to PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N). Your engine won’t start in any other position a safety feature. T o restart when you’re already moving, use NEUTRAL (N) only.

Don’t try to shift to PARK (P) if your vehicle is moving. If you do, you could damage the transmission. Shift to PARK (P) only when your vehicle is stopped.

Manual Transmission

The gear selector should be in NEUTRAL and the parking brake engaged. Hold the clutch pedal to the floor and start the engine. Your vehicle won’t start if the clutch pedal is not all the way down
1. With your foot off the accelerator pedal, turn your ignition key to START. When the engine starts, let go of the key. The idle speed will go down as your engine gets warm.

NOTICE:
Holding your key in START for longer than 15 seconds at a time will cause your battery to be drained much sooner. And the excessive heat can damage your starter motor. Wait about 15 seconds between each try to help avoid draining your battery or damaging your starter.
2. If it doesn’t start within 10 seconds, hold your key in START for not more than 10 seconds. Then, push the accelerator pedal all the way down for five more seconds, unless it starts sooner.
3. If your engine still won’t start (or starts but then stops), wait 15 seconds and start over.
When the engine starts, let go of the key and the accelerator pedal.
NOTICE:
Your engine is designed to work with the electronics in your vehicle. If you add electrical parts or accessories, you could change the way the engine operates. Before adding electrical equipment, check with your dealer. If you don’t, your engine might not perform properly.

Engine Coolant Heater (If Equipped)

In very cold weather, 0_F (-18_C) or colder, the engine coolant heater can help. You’ll get easier starting and better fuel economy during engine warm-up. Usually, the coolant heater should be plugged in a minimum of four hours prior to starting your vehicle.

To Use the Engine Coolant Heater

1. Turn off the engine.
2. Open the hood and unwrap the electrical cord. The cord is located on the driver’s side of the engine compartment, behind the underhood fuse block.
3. Plug it into a normal, grounded 110
-volt AC outlet.
CAUTION:
Plugging the cord into an ungrounded outlet could cause an electrical shock. Also, the wrong kind of extension cord could overheat and cause a fire. You could be seriously injured. Plug the cord into a properly grounded three 110
-volt AC outlet. If the cord won’t reach, use a
heavy
-duty three-prong extension cord rated for
at least 15 amps.
4. Before starting the engine, be sure to unplug and store the cord as it was before to keep it away from moving engine parts. If you don’t, it could be damaged.
How long should you keep the coolant heater plugged in? The answer depends on the outside temperature, the kind of oil you have, and some other things. Instead of trying to list everything here, we ask that you contact your dealer in the area where you’ll be parking your vehicle. The dealer can give you the best advice for that particular area.

Automatic Transmission Operation

Your automatic transmission may have a shift lever located on the console between the seats or on the steering column.
There are several different positions for your shift lever. If your vehicle is equipped with a column shift lever,
it features an electronic shift position indicator within the instrument panel cluster. This display must be powered anytime the shift lever is capable of being moved out of PARK (P). This means that if your key is in OFF, but not locked, there will be a small current drain on your battery which could discharge your battery over a period of time. If you need to leave your key in the ignition in OFF for an extended period, it is recommended that you disconnect the battery cable from the battery to prevent discharging your battery.
PARK (P): This position locks your rear wheels. It’s the best position to use when you start your engine because your vehicle can’t move easily.
CAUTION:
It is dangerous to get out of your vehicle if the shift lever is not fully in PARK (P) with the parking brake firmly set. Your vehicle can roll.
Don’t leave your vehicle when the engine is running unless you have to. If you have left the engine running, the vehicle can move suddenly. You or others could be injured. To be sure your vehicle won’t move, even when you’re on fairly level ground, always set your parking brake and move the shift lever to PARK (P).

You have to fully apply your regular brakes before you can shift from PARK (P) when the ignition key is in RUN. If you cannot shift out of PARK (P), ease pressure on the shift lever
-- push the shift lever all the way into PARK (P)
(press the button in on the console shift lever) as you maintain brake application. Then move the shift lever into the gear you wish. See “Shifting Out of PARK (P)” in the Index.
REVERSE (R): Use this gear to back up.
NOTICE:
Shifting to REVERSE (R) while your vehicle is moving forward could damage your transmission. Shift to REVERSE (R) only after your vehicle is stopped.
T o rock your vehicle back and forth to get out of snow, ice or sand without damaging your transmission, see “Stuck In Sand, Mud, Ice or Snow” in the Index.
NEUTRAL (N): In this position, your engine doesn’t connect with the wheels. T o restart when you’re already moving, use NEUTRAL (N) only.
CAUTION:
Shifting out of PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N) while your engine is “racing” (running at high speed) is dangerous. Unless your foot is firmly on the brake pedal, your vehicle could move very rapidly. You could lose control and hit people or objects. Don’t shift out of PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N) while your engine is racing.
NOTICE:
Damage to your transmission caused by shifting out of PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N) with the engine racing isn’t covered by your warranty.

DRIVE (D): This position is for normal driving.
If you need more power for passing, and you’re:

Going less than about 35 mph (55 km/h), push your accelerator pedal about halfway down.
D
Going about 35 mph (55 km/h) or more,
push the accelerator all the way down. You’ll shift down to the next gear and have more power. DRIVE (D) should not be used when towing a trailer,
carrying a heavy load, driving on steep hills or for
-road driving. Select THIRD (3) when operating the
off vehicle under any of these conditions.
THIRD (3): This position is also used for normal driving, however it offers more power and lower fuel economy than DRIVE (D). You should use THIRD (3) when towing a trailer, carrying a heavy load, driving on steep hills or winding roads or for off
SECOND (2): This position gives you more power but lower fuel economy than THIRD (3). You can use SECOND (2) on hills. It can help control your speed as you go down steep mountain roads, but then you would also want to use your brakes off and on.
You can also use SECOND (2) for starting your vehicle from a stop on slippery road surfaces.
-road driving.
FIRST (1): This position gives you even more power but lower fuel economy than SECOND (2). You can use it on very steep hills, or in deep snow or mud. If the shift lever is put in FIRST (1) while the vehicle is moving forward, the transmission won’t shift into first gear until the vehicle is going slowly enough.
NOTICE:
If your rear wheels can’t turn, don’t try to drive. This might happen if you were stuck in very deep sand or mud or were up against a solid object. You could damage your transmission.
Also, if you stop when going uphill, don’t hold your vehicle there with only the accelerator pedal. This could overheat and damage the transmission. Use your brakes or shift into PARK (P) to hold your vehicle in position on a hill.

Tow/Haul Selector Switch (If Equipped)

This is your shift pattern.
Your vehicle may be equipped with a tow/haul selector switch. This switch will be located on the floor console or on the side of the shift lever on some models.
If your vehicle is equipped with the tow/haul selector switch, you can use this feature to more efficiently tow or haul a heavy load.
T o select the tow/haul mode, press in on the switch. The T ow/Haul light on the instrument panel cluster will come on. T o go back to normal operation, press the switch again. The indicator light on the instrument panel cluster will go out. See “T ow/Haul Mode” in the Index for more information.
Here’s how to operate your manual transmission: FIRST (1): Press the clutch pedal and shift into
FIRST (1). Then, slowly let up on the clutch pedal as you press the accelerator pedal.
You can shift into FIRST (1) when you’re going less than 20 mph (30 km/h). If you’ve come to a complete stop and it’s hard to shift into FIRST (1), put the shift lever in NEUTRAL and let up on the clutch. Press the clutch pedal back down. Then shift into FIRST (1).

SECOND (2): Press the clutch pedal as you let up
on the accelerator pedal and shift into SECOND (2). Then, slowly let up on the clutch pedal as you press the accelerator pedal.
THIRD, FOURTH AND FIFTH (3, 4 and 5): Shift into THIRD (3), FOURTH (4) and FIFTH (5) the same way you do for SECOND (2). Slowly let up on the clutch pedal as you press the accelerator pedal.
To stop, let up on the accelerator pedal and press the brake pedal. Just before the vehicle stops, press the clutch pedal and the brake pedal, and shift to NEUTRAL.
NEUTRAL: Use this position when you start or idle your engine.
REVERSE (R): To back up, press the clutch pedal, wait about six seconds, then shift into REVERSE (R). Then let up on the clutch pedal slowly while pressing the accelerator pedal.
NOTICE:
Shift to REVERSE (R) only after your vehicle is stopped. Shifting to REVERSE (R) while your vehicle is moving could damage your transmission.
Use REVERSE (R), along with the parking brake, for parking your vehicle.

Shift Light (If Equipped)

If you have a manual transmission, you have a SHIFT light on your instrument panel cluster.
This light will show you when to shift to the next higher gear for best fuel economy.

When this light comes on, you can shift to the next higher gear if weather, road and traffic conditions let you. For the best fuel economy, accelerate slowly and shift when the light comes on.
While you accelerate, it is normal for the light to go on and off if you quickly change the position of the accelerator. Ignore the SHIFT light when you downshift.
CAUTION:
If you skip a gear when you downshift, you could lose control of your vehicle. You could injure yourself or others. Don’t shift down more than one gear at a time when you downshift.
If your vehicle has four-wheel drive and is equipped with a manual transmission, disregard the SHIFT light when the transfer case is in 4LO.

Four-Wheel Drive (If Equipped)

If your vehicle has four-wheel drive, you can send your engine’s driving power to all four wheels for extra traction. T o get the most satisfaction out of four-wheel drive, you must be familiar with its operation. Read the part that follows before using four You should use two normal driving conditions.
-wheel high (2HI) for most
-wheel drive.
NOTICE:
Driving in the 4HI or 4LO positions for a long time on dry or wet pavement could shorten the life of your vehicle’s drivetrain.

Electronic Transfer Case (If Equipped)

If your four-wheel-drive vehicle has the electronic transfer case, the transfer case switches are to the right of the steering wheel on the instrument panel.
Use these switches to shift into and out of four drive. You can choose among three driving settings:
2HI: This setting is for driving in most street and highway situations. Your front axle is not engaged in two
-wheel drive. When this lamp is lit, it is about
-half as bright as the others.
one 4HI: This setting engages your front axle to help
drive your vehicle. Use 4HI when you need extra traction, such as on snowy or icy roads, or in most off
-road situations.
-wheel
4LO: This setting also engages your front axle to give you extra traction. You may never need 4LO. It sends the maximum power to all four wheels. You might choose 4LO if you were driving off or deep snow and climbing or descending steep hills.
Indicator lights in the switches show you which setting you are in. The indicator lights will come on briefly when you turn on the ignition and one will stay on. If the lights do not come on, you should take your vehicle in for service. An indicator light will flash while shifting. It will remain illuminated when the shift is completed.
Shifting from 2HI to 4HI
Press and release the 4HI switch. This can be done at any speed, and the front axle will lock automatically.
Shifting from 4HI to 2HI
Press and release the 2HI switch. This can be done at any speed, and the front axle will unlock automatically.
Shifting from 2HI or 4HI to 4LO
T o shift from 2HI or 4HI to 4LO, the vehicle must be stopped or moving less than 3 mph (4.8 km/h) with the transmission in NEUTRAL (N) in vehicles equipped
