3-1 Introduction

The EZ-Swap 2 Serial ATA version is as convenient as mobile racks get. The EZ-Swap 2 SATA features the ability to directly connect your SATA hard drive without going through any additional circuits. Simply place the hard drive inside the cartridge, screw it in place, and your done. The EZ-Swap 2 SATA also features keyed lock protection to prevent removal while in use. Since it uses SATA technology, the EZ-Swap 2 SATA is also hot swappable. Easy, convenient, and reliable, the EZ-Swap 2 SATA is the ideal SATA mobile rack.

SATA Basics

SerialATA(SATA)isthelatestinterfacestandardusedforharddrives,opticaldrives (CD/DVDRomdrives),andothercomputerdevices. Becauseitusesserialtechnology, informationistransferredinasinglestream,ratherthanalongparallelpaths. SATA therebyeliminatestherestrictionsonperformance,reliability,andscalabilitythatare inherentinstandardIDE(parallelATA)interfaces. SATAoffersthespeedandreliability formerlyonlyfoundonSCSI(SmallComputerSystemInterface)withoutthehighcosts andmaintenance. SATAallowsforRAID(RedundantArrayofInexpensiveDisks) systemsandtheabilitytoaddorremovedeviceswithoutrequiringthesystemtobe powereddownfirst.

3-2 Hardware Installation

TheAluminumMobileRackDockingModuleisdesignedtoinstallinanyPC/AT or Pentium-class computer that has an available 5.25-inch half-height drive bay. General instructions for installing the Mobile Rack are given since the design of computer cases varies. Refer to your computer’s manual whenever in doubt.

Installing the Mobile Rack Docking Case

1.Turn OFF the power to your computer and any other connected peripheral devices.Followtheprecautionsforstaticelectricitydischarge:

Dischargeanystaticelectricitybuildupinyourbodybytouchingagrounded metal surface such as the computer case, if plugged in.

During installation procedures, avoid any contact with internal parts.

2.Unplug the power cord from the back of the computer.

3.Removeyourcomputer’scover.

4.Removethecomputer’sfrontcoverplatefromthe5.25-inchdrivebayyouplan to install your Mobile Rack into.

5.Remove (separate) the Mobile Rack drive case from the docking case by lifting the handle and pulling it out.

6.Slide the docking case into the 5.25-inch drive bay.

7.Positionthedockingcasesoitsmountingholesalignwiththedrivebay’s mountingholes.Securewiththesuppliedmountingscrews(two/fouron eachside.)

8.AttachtheredSATAcablefromthebackoftheunittoanavailableSATAport onthesystemboardoranySATAcontrollercard. Connecttheredandwhite HDDAccess/ActivitysignalcabletotheHDDsignalpinsonyoursystemboard.

9.Connectanavailable4-pinpowercablefromthesystem’spowersupplyto

the4-pinconnectoronthebackofthedockingcase.Thepowerconnectoris ‘D’shapedtoensureproperorientationwhenmakingtheconnection.

10.Replacethecomputer’scoverandreconnectthepowerandotherexternal cabling.

Mounting a Drive in the Drive Case

Proceedwiththefollowingstepstoinstalla3.5-inchdrivedeviceintheMobileRack drivecase.

1.RemovetheMobileRackdrivecasecoverbyremovingthetwomountingscrews, thenslidingthecovertowardsthebackoftheunit.

2.Carefullypositionthedriveinsidethedrivecase.

WARNING

•DONOTremovethedrivecasewhilethedriveisworking. Damagetodatamayresult.

•TheKey-LockmustbeintheLockpositionwhileinuse.

To insert the Mobile Rack drive case:

1.InserttheMobileRackdrivecase(withdriveinstalled)intotheinstalledMobile Rackdockingcaseandpushfirmlyuntilthedriveisseated.

2.Insertthekeyandturnit rightto lock. TheLEDontheMobileRackshould lightafteraslightdelay.TheinstalledMobileRackdeviceisreadytouse.

To remove the Mobile Rack drive case:

1.Insertthekeyandturnit leftto unlock. NotethatthepowerLEDonthe MobileRackshouldnowbeOFF.

2.GentlypullontheMobileRackhandletoslidethedrivecaseout.

3-4 Troubleshooting

Q.IinstalledtheEZ-Swap2butmycomputerdoesnotdetecttheharddriveinit.

A.BesuretoturnontheEZ-Swap2bysettingtheKey-LockintheLockposition. The EZ-Swap2willnotturnonunlessitislocked. Ifyouareusingabrandnewdrive,make sureyouinitialize,partitionandformatthedrivebeforetryingtouseit. Thiscanbedone usingthesoftwarethatcomeswiththeHARDDRIVEorbyusingWindows’Disk Managementutility.

Q.Thedataonmyharddriveiscorrupt!

A.ConnectingyourharddrivetotheEZ-Swap2isjustlikeconnectingayourhard

drivetotheinsideofyourcomputer. TheEZ-Swap2itselfwillnotcorruptyourdata. Ifyourdatahasbecomecorrupt,itislikelycausedbyremovaloftheEZ-Swap2cartridge whiledatawasstillbeingwrittentotheharddrive.

NEVERREMOVETHEEZ-SWAP2CARTRIDGEWHILEDATAISBEING WRITTENTOTHEHARDDRIVE. Doingmaycausetheharddrivetobecome corrupt. Makesureallapplicationsbeingruno thediskandallfilesinuseareno longerinusebeforeremovingthedisk. Tobesafe,itwouldbebesttoshutdownyour systembeforeremovingthecartridge.

TheEZ-Swap2comeswitha3yearlimitedwarranty(90dayparts). Ifyourunit shouldbecomedefectivewithinthattimeframe,pleasegotowww.vantecusa.com forinformationonhowtoreceivewarrantyreplacement. Cosmeticdefectsand missingpartsarenotcoveredunderthiswarranty. Pleasecheckthecontentsofthe unittomakesureyoureceivedallparts. Also,checkforanycosmeticflaws. Ifany partsaremissingoriftherearecosmeticdefects,pleasecontacttheretailerfromwhich youpurchasedtheunitandaskforareplacement.
