1.1 Important Safety Instructions

Before using your SR601, be sure to carefully read the applicable items of these operating instructions and the safety suggestions.

Read these instructions.

Keep these instructions.

Heed all warnings.

Follow all instructions.

Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.

The Tannoy SR601 Rock Speaker has been designed to resist weather and withstand environmental conditions. There are precautions you should take to optimize the long term life and performance of your SR601 speakers. Keep soil, debris and woodchips from covering the speaker grille. If debris accumulates on the grille, it can easily be rinsed away with a garden hose under low water pressure. Do not spray water directly into the face of the grille. Avoid placing the speakers where the grille area will come into direct contact with sprinklers. If you desire to rinse the speaker surface, then direct the spray of water at a 45 degree angle away from the the grille, again using low water pressure.

Yard Chemicals constitute another element that can prematurely shorten the speaker’s life. Fertilizers, weed control sprays and many other chemicals commonly used in the yard can potentially cause damage to the rubber and plastic speaker components of the SR601 rock speaker.

The Tannoy SR601 has been designed to be both sonically and cosmetically pleasing, this extremely versatile rock speaker is perfect when placed in areas ranging from indoor use like terrariums and interior gardens to back yards, patios and pool or spa setting.

These weather resistant loudspeakers are made of the most durable components including terra alba and fibre glass enclosures to achieve a product which will resist rain, hail, sleet, coastal environments and snow, but still appear natural and inconspicuous. You will find that the materials used in the SR601 are also superior in resisting sun fade and water marks.

The Tannoy SR601 - finally a rock speaker that visually blends into its environment, yet stands out in the rock garden sonically!

2.1 USER RESPONSIBILITY

2.2 Speaker Damage

If you hear obvious distortion from the speakers. Immediately lower the volume level of your amplifier. Those sounds often indicate that either the amplifier or the speaker is being over driven and damage can result in playing your source material at high volume levels for prolonged periods of time. You should also avoid using extreme amounts of equalization.

The grilles are not designed or intended to be removed. Do not remove the grilles from your SR601 rock speaker. There are no user serviceable parts behind the grille and removal will damage the speaker.

3.0 UNPACKING

Carefully open the shipping carton and check for any noticeable damage. Every Tannoy SR601 is tested and inspected before leaving the factory and should arrive in perfect condition. If found to be damaged, notify the shipping company immediately. Only the consignee may institute a claim with the carrier for damage incurred during shipping. Be sure to save the carton and packing materials for the carriers inspection.

It is also advisable to save the carton and packing material, even if the rock speaker is undamaged. Should you ever need to ship the loudspeaker, always use original packaging.

4.0 SOUND COVERAGE AND SPEAKER PLACEMENT

The SR601 rock speaker is sold separately, as many outdoor installations have multiple zones. It is best to have a larger number of speakers playing at low volumes, rather than a few speakers playing at high volume. When covering a large, high noise area multiple speakers are required to overcome ambient noise.

Ideally, you should place the speakers as close to the primary listening area and audio source as possible. The volume of the speaker decreases rapidly as it is moved further from the listener. Keep in mind that wire must be run to the location of the speakers. Patios, walls and other features in your yard or installation may be difficult to get around when wiring your speakers, so properly planning your design is important.

5.0 CONNECTIONS

5.1 Wire Runs

Each SR601 rock speaker has a two-conductor speaker wire surrounded by a cable sleeve exiting the bottom of the speaker.

Tannoy does not supply speaker wire or cable accessories separately. If you are installing the SR601, you may wish to purchase certified direct burial cables (environmentally rated speaker wire) and/or watertight burial box which also works well for the purpose of protecting your connection. Burial cable or wire rated for in ground installation is available at most hardware and home improvements outlets.

The cable or wire can be run directly beneath the speaker into the ground. When attaching the cable to the speaker, it is critical that a high quality connection be achieved. Poor connections will lead to corrosion, possible loss of signal and/or decline in audio performance.

When possible, try to reduce the distance of your speaker from the audio source to achieve the best audio results. The optimum run should be no longer than 50 feet for the most favorable results. Runs longer than 50 feet are common, but may require additional installation steps. Please ask your Tannoy dealer or professional contractor if you have questions regarding longer wire runs. Tannoy recommends larger wire of 12 or 14 gauge for speaker wire runs longer then 50 feet.

5.0 CONNECTIONS

5.2 Polarity

Caution: Do not attempt to connect the speakers to any source or amplifier that is turned on. Be sure the source or amplifier is off prior to connecting the speakers.

Parallel or series wiring is commonly acceptable for the SR601 rock speaker to gain correct amplifier loading. Avoid series wiring your SR601 speakers with any other speaker type or brand.

Polarity - Speaker wires are marked for polarity consistency so that you can determine the positive and negative identity of the individual wires within the molded pair insulation. Polarity shown by either a color stripe on the insulation, by ridges molded into one side of the insulation, the color of the insulation case around the wire or by the color type or colors of the wires/wire itself (copper or silver).

Important: In order to maintain correct polarity, always connect speaker wire using the positive (+) terminal on the amplifier to the positive (+) wire and the negative (-) terminal on the amplifier to the negative (-) wire.

For a typical audio installation, all speakers in a system will be connected with the same respective polarity.

For best results, crimp or solder the wire together using heat shrink to seal each individual conductor. After the individual conductors are sealed, seal over the pair with another layer of heat shrink.

Connection Tip: You may also use twist nuts specially designed for outdoor applications. The twist nuts have a silicone cone inside the nut head and coat the connection once attached. These special nuts are not included but are widely available.

8.0 TROUBLESHOOTING

Distorted or unnatural sound can indicate poor connections, defective electronics, damaged source material or speaker failure. If only one of your speakers has poor sound quality, check the speaker wire and audio connections.
