Precautions

•Operate the unit only on 6V DC with four R6 (size AA) batteries.

For AC operation, use the AC power adaptor recommended for this unit. Do not use any other type.

For car battery operation, use the car battery cord recommended for this unit. Do not use any other type.

•The unit is not disconnected from the AC power source (mains) as long as it is connected to the wall outlet, even if the unit itself has been fumed off.

•Disconnect the AC power adaptor from the wall outlet when the unit is not to be used for a long period of time.

•The name plate indicating operating voltage, etc., is located at the rear of the unit.

•Use the unit within a temperature range of 0°C to 40°C (32°F to 104°F). If it is used in temperatures outside this range, an irregular display may appear on the display window. If it is used in temperatures lower than this range, the display may change very slowly. These irregularities will disappear and there will be no damage to the unit when the unit is used

in its recommended temperature range.

•Do not leave the unit near heat sources, such as radiators or air ducts, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust, moisture, rain, mechani­ cal vibration or shock.

•Should any solid object or liquid fall into the unit, remove the batteries, and have the unit checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.

•Since a strong magnet is used for the speaker, keep personal credit cards using magnetic coding or spring-wound watches away from the unit to prevent them from possible damage caused by the magnet.

•When the casing becomes soiled, clean it with a soft dry cloth dampened with mild detergent solution. Never use abrasive cleansers or chemical

solvents, as they may mar the casing.

•When there is lightning and you are using an external antenira, immedi­ ately disconnect the AC power adaptor (if connected) from the wall outlet. Never touch the antenna wire when there is a lightning storm.

• Never connect a ground wire to a gas pipe.

•Reception of 3.6 MHz may be difficult because of internal spurious signals generated by the built-in oscilators.

•In vehicles or buildings, radio reception may be difficult or noisy. Try listening near a window.

Note on the MW channel step

The MW channel step differs depending on area. The channel step of this unit is factory-set to 10 kHz or to 9 kHz to match the frequency allocation system of the country as listed. You can change the channel step (See page 13).

Power Sources

Batteries

Before installing the batteries, be sure to check that the MW CH STEP 9/10 kHz selector is set correctly (see page 13).

Notes

•To operate the unit by internal batteries, disconnect the AC power adaptor or car battery cord from the DC IN 6V jack.

When you disconnect them from the DC IN 6V jack, may flash in the display even if battery capacity still remains. To stop the flashing, press ON/OFF.

•When the batteries are removed for a long time, the preset stations and the dock settings will be erased. In this case, set them again before use.

Battery replacement

•When the bateries run down, the sound become week and distorted, and <Xi flashes in the display. Even in this condition, you can use the unit for a while.

When the batteries are completely exhausted, the radio is turned off and CS3 lights up.

•Replace all the batteries with new one when <Xi flashes in the display. Even after you replace the batteries, <Xi remains flashing. To turn off <X>, press ON/OFF.

•Replace the batteries within ten minutes after removing the batteries. Otherwise, the preset stations and the clock settings will be erased.

If they are erased, preset the stations and set the time again.

House Current

Use the AC-E60HG AC power adaptor (supplied with the ICFSW760(3GS for Canada and European continent).

Car Battery

For use on a car battery, connect the Sony car battery cord (not sup­ plied) to the EXZ IN 6V jack.

For detailed information, see the Operating Instructions of the car battery cord.

Notes

•The internal batteries are automatically disconnected when the AC power adaptor or the car battery cord is connected to the DC IN 6V jack. •When connecting and disconnecting the external power source plug, be sure to turn off the radio.

Otherwise, the "<XJ" mark will be displayed and the power will be cut.

If this happens, turn the radio on again. •After using the AC power adaptor or the car battery cord, disconnect the DC IN 6V jack first. When the cord is connected to the DC IN 6V jack, the radio does not operate by the internal batteries.

•Keep the batteries installed for the built-in computer back-up even if you use external power sources. However, replace the batteries once a year because they «re disrfiarged gradually.

•Use only the recommended AC power adaptor or car battery cord manufactured by Sony. The polarity of the plugs of other manufacturers may be different.

When you first install batteries or the clock is reset, "0:00" flashes in

the display. Press TIME SET.

2While holding down TIME SET, press a MANUAL TUNE/ SCAN START/STANDBY TIME SET/TIME SET button to adjust the clock.

Every pressing of an inner MANUAL TUNE/SCAN START/ STANDBY TIME SET/TIME SET button (<i> or O) changes the time setting by one minute, and an outer button (K> or by one hour.

To advance the time digits rapidly, keep it pressed.

Changing the MW Channel Step

The MW channel step is factory-set to 9 (10) kHz to match the fre­ quency allocation system of the country. If you use the radio where the frequency allocation system is based on 10 (9) kHz interval, set the MW CH STEP 9/10 kHz selector in the battery compartment to 10 (9) kHz.

1Set POWER/LOCK to LOCK.

2Open the battery compartment and remove the batteries.

3Change MW CH STEP 9/10 kHz.

4 Install the batteries and close the battery compartment.

5 Set POWER/LOCK to POWER.

To Improve Reception

For MW/LW reception

Retract the telescopic antenna. The built-in ferrite bar antenna activates. Since this antenna is directional, rotate the unit horizontally to the optimum direction.

For SW reception

Pull out the telescopic antenna to its full length and set it vertically.

When the sound is distorted

Normally set SENS DX/ LOCAL to DX. However, when the sound is distorted, set it to LOCAL.

When you are listening to the news

Set TONE to NEWS. Vocal will be heard more clearly. When you are listening to music, set it to MUSIC.

For FM reception

Pull out the telescopic antenna to expose its swivel base and adjust its length, angle and direction.

To Prevent Accidental Change of the Received Station

Press KEY PROTECT o-n. The o-n mark appears in the display window and all the buttons on the control panel do not work.

To release the key protect functigny press

What is a meter band?

SW is divided into 13 bands by the wave length (meter).

Each band is called a meter band. (See the table on page 19.)

Scan Tuning

1Set POWER/LOCK to POWER.

2Press ON/OFF. The radio is turned on,

3Receive a broadcast band by way of direct tuning or manual tuning. (Refer to the table on the next page for the frequency range of each broadcast band.)

4Keep pressing an outer MANUAL TUNE/SCAN START/ STANDBY TIME SET/TIME SET button (K> or Oi) for about 2 seconds. Scan tuning will begin within the frequency range.

When a station is received, the scanning will stop automatically for

about 2 seconds and the TUNE indicator lights.

5Press SCAN STOP/AM BAND to listen to the station being received. The scan tuning stops and the station being received is tuned in.

6Tune in the station more precisely by inner buttons of MANUAL TUNE/SCAN START/STANDBY TIME SET/TIME SET (<> or O), if required.

7Adjust VOLUME.

To turn off the radio, press ON/OFF.

You can adjust the frequency within an approx. ±1.5 kHz range. The frequency display will not change.

What is SSB (Single Side Band) ?

SSB is very popular among ham and business radio users and will be found on ail of Ihe amateur bands because of its signal intelligibility.

In general, SSB transmissions employ USB (upper sideband) modulation, and for amateur bands lower than 10 MHz, LSB (lower sideband) is often used.

What is CW (Continuous Wave) ?

CW is also popular among ham and business radio users. In CW transmission, the amplitude of a carrier is not modulated whjle that of other system is modulated. CW conveys information by interrupting a carrier using Morse code. It can be heard as a beat sound only with the unit equipped with BFO circuits. To understand the information transmitted by CW, you need to learn the Morse code.

Turn on the radio, and select AM with FM/AM.

Tune in a frequency you want to receive by way of direct tuning (see page 14), manual tuning (see page 16), scan tuning (see page 18) or preset tuning (see page 20).

Set AM MODE to SYNC.

Switch LSB/USB to a sideband that gives clear reception. When the synchronous detection is locked, the SYNC LOCK indicator lights.

what is synchronous detection?

There are two big problems in AM reception: distortion due to fading and interference from adjacent stations. Synchronous detection is effective in solving these problems. Distortion due to fading is caused by over-modulation, which occurs when a carrier component of the received signal is attenuated on the way. In this receiver, a pure carrier frequency with no level variation, perfectly synchronized with the original carrier, is generated in the synchronous detector circuit and is mixed with the received signal to compensate the attenuated carrier component. In this way, distortion is remarkably reduced. On the other hand, AM (SW, MW, and LW) broadcasting generally uses double­ sideband transmission, in w’hich modulated signals are transmitted using

both the upper and lower sidebands (USB and LSB). In most cases, one of the sidebands is affected by interference from adjacent stations (beats). In the synchronous detector circuit, one of USB and LSB can be received. This allows clear reception without interference from adjacent stations.

When you set the standby time

Using the Wide Range Antenna (not supplied)

Use the wide range antenna AN-1 or AN-102 (not supplied). There are the following two methods.

Method A (For SW reception)

With a connecting cord, connect the OUTPUT jack of the antenna controller (supplied with the AN-1 or AN-102) and the EXT ANT jack of this unit.

Method B (For MW/LW reception only)

1With the connecting cord, connect the OUTPUT jack of the antenna controller and the INPUT jack of the antenna coupler (supplied with the AN-1 or AN-102).

2Position the antenna coupler near the unit.

Example: When the AN-1 is used.

•When receiving MW or LW broadcasts without the external antenna, be sure to disconnect an SW external antenna.

Otherwise, you cannot receive them as the built-in ferrite bar antenna does not function. *

•If there is lightning, do not touch the wire of an external antenna and disconnect its AC power adaptor (if connected) immediately. Never touch the antenna wire during a lightning storm.

•When using an external antenna, retract the telescopic antenna.

•Locate the outdpor antenna as far away from the street as possible.

•The AC power adaptor or a car battery cord is disconnected.

The preset station cannot be received when preset tuning.

Précautions

•La plaque indiquant la tension de fonctionnement et autres informations électriques est située à l'arrière de l'appareil.

•Utilisez l'appareil dans une plage de température entre 0°C et 40°C (32°F et 104°F). Si vous l'utilisez hors de cette plage de température, les informations apparaissant sur l'afficheur risquent d'être irrégulières. S'il fait trop froid, l'affichage risque de changer très lentement. Ces irrégularités disparaissent sans aucun dommage pour l'appareil dès qu'il est ramené dans la plage de température recommandée.

•L'appareil ne doit pas être laissé près d'une source de chaleur, comme un radiateur ou une bouche d'air chaud, ou dans un endroit exposé directement au soleil, à de la poussière excessive, à l'humidité, à la pluie, à des vibrations mécaniques ou à des chocs.

•Si un objet solide ou un liquide tombait dans l'appareil, sortez les piles et faites vérifier l'appareil par un technicien qualifié avant de le remettre en service.

•Etant donné qu'un aimant puissant est utilisé dans le haut-parleur, éloignez les cartes de crédit à code magnétique ou les montres à ressorts pour éviter des dommages possibles dus à l'aimant.

•Si le boîtier est sale, nettoyez-le avec un chiffon doux légèrement mouillé d'une solution savonneuse douce. N'utilisez jamais de produit abrasif ou de solvant chimique qui pourraient abîmer la finition.

•S'il y a des éclairs et que vous utilisez une antenne extérieure, déconnectez immédiatement l'adaptateur d'alimentation secteur de la prise murale (s'il est raccordé). Ne jamais toucher le fil d'antenne pendant un orage.

•Ne jamais raccorder un fil de masse à une conduite de gaz.

•La réception de la fréquence 3,6 MFiz risque d'être difficile à cause des signaux parasites internes générés par les oscillateurs intégrés.

•Dans un véhicule ou un bâtiment, la réception radio peut être difficile ou présenter des parasites. Rapprochez l'appareil d'une fenêtre.

Remarque concernant l'intervalle d'accord PO

L'intervalle d'accord PO varie suivant la région. Sur cet appareil, il est préréglé en usine sur 10 kHz ou 9 kHz suivant le système d'attribution des fréquences de votre pays comme indiqué dans le tableau ci-dessous. Vous pouvez changer l'intervalle d'accord (Voir page 45).

Sources d'alimentation

Av'ant de mettre les piles en place, vérifiez que le sélecteur MW CH STEP 9/10 kHz est réglé correctement (voir page 45).

Remarques

•Pour faire fonctionner la radio sur les piles, débranchez l'adaptateur secteur ou le cordon allume-cigare de la prise DC IN 6V.

Quand vous les débranchez de la prise DC IN 6V, <Xi risque de clignoter sur l'afficheur même si les piles ne sont pas encore épuisées. Pour que le clignotement cesse, appuyez sur ON / OFF.

•Si les piles sont sorties pendant longtemps, les stations préréglées et les réglages de l'horloge finissent par s'effacer. Dans ce cas, refaites les réglages avant utilisation.

Remplacement des piles

•Quand les piles commencent à s'épuiser, le son devient faible et

r présente des distorsions, et l'indicateur <Xi clignote sur l'afficheur. Dans ces conditions, vous pouvez tout de même utiliser l'appareil pendant un moment. Quand les piles sont complètement épuisées, la radio s'éteint et l'indicateur

s'allume.

•Remplacez toutes les piles par des neuves quand l'indicateur clignote sur l'afficheur. Même après le remplacement des piles, l'indicateur ^ continue de clignoter. Pour l'éteindre,

appuyez sur ON/OFF.

•Remplacez rapidement les piles une fois qu'elles sont sorties. Si vous mettez plus de dix minutes, les stations préréglées et les réglages de l'horloge seront effacés.

S'ils sont effacés, refaites le préréglage des stations et le réglage de l'heure. •En ce qui concerne la durée des piles, reportez-vous aux spécifications.

Courant domestique

Utilisez l'adaptateur d'alimentation secteur AC-E60HG (fourni avec le modèle 1CF-SW7600GS pour le Canada et le continent européen).

Batterie de voiture

Pour alimenter l'appareil sur la batterie de votre voiture, raccordez le cordon allume-cigare Sony (non fourni) à la prise DC IN 6V. Pour plus d'informations, reportez-vous à la notice du cordon allume-cigare.

Remarques

•Les piles sont automatiquement déconnectées si l'adaptateur d'alimentation secteur ou le cordon allume-cigare est raccordé à la prise DC IN6V.

•Avant de brancher ou débrancher la fiche de la source d'alimentation extérieure, veillez à éleindre la radio. Si elle reste allumée quand vous branchez ou débranchez la source, "tXî" peut apparaître sur l'afficheur et la radio s'eteindre.

Dans ce cas, allumez la radio de nouveau.

•Après utilisation de l'adaptateur d'alimentation secteur ou du cordon allume-cigare, déconnectez la prise DC IN 6V en premier. Tant que le cordon est raccordé à la prise DC IN 6V, la radio ne peut pas fonctionner sur les piles.

•Laissez les piles en place pour l'alimentation du microprocesseur intégré, même si vous utilisez une source d'alimentation externe, mais prenez soin de remplacer les piles une fois par an car elles se déchargent progressivement.

•N'utilisez que l'adaptateur d'alimentation secteur ou le cordon allume-cigare recommandés et fabriqués par Sony. La polarité des fiches d'autres fabricants risque d'être différente.

Pour la bande FM, vous n'avez pas besoin d'entrer la virgule. Pour la bande AM, les trois derniers zéros peuvent être omis (voir Les exemples de gauche).

Appuyez sur EXE. Quand la station est accordée, l'indicateur TUNE s'allume.

Réglez le volume (VOLUME).

Pour éteindre la radio, appuyez sur ON/OFF.

1Réglez POWER/LOCK sur POWER.

2Appuyez sur ON/OFF. La radio s'allume.

3Appuyez sur FM/AM pour sélectionner la bande (FM ou AM). Sélectionnez AM pour recevoir les ondes courtes (SW), les petites ondes (MW) ou les grandes ondes (LW)

4Appuyez sur DIRECT. La fréquence affichée est effacée.

Remarque

Après avoir appuyé sur une touche, appuyez sur la touche suivante dans les 10 secondes, sinon l'affichage revient à la station accordée précédemment.

Si vous entrez une fréquence en dehors de la plage de fréquence

L'affichage revient à la station accordée précédemment. Appuyez sur DIRECT et entrez la fréquence correcte.

Si vous entrez une fréquence incorrecte

Appuyez sur DIRECT pour annuler l'entrée et effectuez l'opération ci-dessus à partir de l'étape 4 avec la fréquence correcte.

Pour améliorer la réception

Réception PO/GO

Rentrez l'antenne télescopique, l'antenne en barre de ferrite incorporée s'active. Etant donné que cette antenne est directionnelle, faites pivoter l'appareil horizontalement pour trouver la direction optimale.

Réception des ondes courtes

Déployez complètement et verticalement l'antenne télescopique.

Si le son présente des distorsions

Normalement, réglez SENS DX/LOCAL sur DX. Cep>endant, si le son est déformé, réglez-Ie sur LOCAL.

Quand vous écoutez les informations

Réglez TONE sur NEWS.^Les voix sont ainsi restituées plus clairement. Quand vous écoutez de la musique, réglez-le sur MUSIC.

Réception FM

Sortez l'anterme télescopique de manière à exposer sa base pivotante et ajuster la longueur, l'angle et la direction.

Pour éviter un changement accidentel de la station captée

Appuyez sur KEY PROTECT o-n.

Le symbole o-n apparaît sur l'afficheur et aucune touche du panneau de commande ne répond. Pour annuler la fonction de verrouillage du clavier, appuyez de nouveau sur KEY PROTECT o-n.
