Before You Begin
Thank you for choosing the Sony CD clock radio! The CD clock radio will give you many hours of reliable service and listening pleasure.
Before operating the CD clock radio, please read these instructions thoroughly and retain them for future reference.
These instructions cover these models: ICF-CD533 and ICF-CD533L.
Their differences are shown below.

Various Ways of Playback
You can play tracks repeatedly or in random order.

Installing the Unit
Under a Cabinet (See
Fig. A)
The unit can be installed without the spacer.
1Mark the position of the 4 holes by using the supplied template. Use a drill
to make the holes (size 6.5 mm dia., 1/4 inch). (See Fig. A-a)
2When the cabinet door overhangs the shelf and obstructs the unit, you can adjust the unit/shelf height.
First set the L mark to the dot which becomes the lowest position, then you can adjust the height in 4 steps (H••L)
by turning the spacer counterclockwise. (See Fig. A-b)
3Install the unit with the supplied mounting screws. (See Fig. A-c)
Caution
•Since the unit is very heavy, be careful when installing the unit.
•To reduce the risk of fire, do not place any heating or cooking appliance beneath this unit.
•Install the unit so that its AC power cord can be connected directly to a wall outlet. Do not use a converter or extension cord.
•Be sure that the AC power cord has no slack when using the unit, since the cord acts as an FM wire antenna. If the AC power cord has some slack, wind it up to the cord hook until the cord has no slack.
•The unit has a built-in ferrite bar antenna for AM radio reception. Check the condition of AM reception before fixing in position.
•Install the unit as far as possible from a source of noise. (for example, refrigerator, microwave oven, fluorescent lamp, etc.)
Setting the Clock
1Plug in the unit.
The display will flash “AM 12:00” or “0:00”.
2While holding down CLOCK, press TIME ADJ + or – until the correct time appears in the display.
When you release CLOCK, the clock begins to operate and “:” flashes.
•The clock system varies depending on the model you own.
12-hour system: “AM 12:00” = midnight, “PM 12:00” = noon.
24-hour system: “0:00” = midnight, “12:00” = noon.
•To set the current time rapidly, keep pressing the + or – button while holding down CLOCK.
•To set the current time from zero seconds, at step 2, release CLOCK with the time signal.
Playing a Disc
An 8 cm (3-inch) CD can be played without an adaptor.
1Press 6OPEN/CLOSE and place a CD on the disc tray.
2Press CD ^.
The disc tray closes and the player plays all the tracks once.

Note
•When you press CD ^, if there is no disc in the CD compartment, the “00” indication flashes for about 5 seconds and the unit will be turned off.
Operating the Radio
Manual Tuning
1Press RADIO to turn on the radio.
2Select FM, AM(MW) or LW (ICFCD533L only) by pressing BAND. Each press of BAND changes the band.
3Tune in a station by pressing TIMER ADJ/TUNE + or – .
The FM channel step is set to 0.1 MHz and the AM channel step is set to 10 kHz for the model for North and South America. The FM channel step is set to 0.05 MHz and the AM(MW) channel step is set to 9 kHz for the model for other countries. (The FM frequency indication changes every 0.1 MHz.)
The LW channel step is set to 9 kHz. Beeps sound at the band edge. After 5 seconds, the indication becomes the current time but the “RADIO” indication remains.
4Adjust volume using VOL.
•To turn off the radio, press RADIO/CD OFF.
•To improve radio reception
FM: Extend the AC power cord fully to improve FM reception.
AM(MW)/LW: When installing the unit, rotate the unit horizontally for optimum reception and then install the unit.
A ferrite bar antenna is built into the unit.
•To check the station you are listening to, press RADIO lightly. The band and frequency will appear for about 5 seconds.
Preset Tuning
You can preset up to five FM/AM(MW)/LW stations in random.
Example: To set AM 1260 kHz in memory presets button 1.
1Tune in the AM 1260 kHz (See “Manual Tuning”).
2Hold down the desired preset button until the beeps sound.
AM
The frequency will appear for about
5 seconds and then return to the current time.
•To change the preset station, preset a new station in the number of which you want to change the station. The previous station is canceled.
Tuning in a Preset Station
1Press RADIO.
2Press a preset number button of the station you want to tune in.
3Adjust volume using VOL.
Setting the Count
Down Timer
Use the timer as a reminder. The beep sounds for 60 minutes when the preset time has passed. The beep sounds when the radio is on or off. The timer can be set at 1 minute intervals between 0:01–24:00.
1Press TIMER•SET/ON/OFF. “TIMER” will appear in the display.

2While “TIMER” is in the display, press
TIMER ADJ/TUNE + or –.
When the desired time appears in the display, release TIMER ADJ/TUNE + or
– and press TIMER•SET/ON/OFF. The beep sounds twice, and the timer is set.
TIMER
When the time has elapsed, the buzzer will sound and the display flashes.
TIMER
•While the timer is set, the display shows the remaining time. To display the current time, press CLOCK.
•To stop the beep in the middle of beeping, press TIMER•SET/ON/OFF.
•To cancel the timer setting time, before the time elapses, hold down TIMER•SET/ON/OFF until “TIMER” disappears.
The timer setting time is canceled and the current time appears in the display.
Preset Timer
You can preset up to five different count down timers.
1Set the timer (See “Setting the Count Down Timer”).
2Hold down the desired preset button until the beeps sound.
Operating the Preset
Timer
1Press TIMER•SET/ON/OFF.
2Press the desired preset button.
3Press TIMER•SET/ON/OFF again.
Useful Functions
To Obtain Powerful Bass
Turn MEGA BASS to adjust the bass volume. The “MEGA BASS” system produces a powerful bass sound.
Precautions
•Operate the unit on the power sources specified in “Specifications.”
•The nameplate indicating voltage, etc. is located at the top.
•Disconnect the mains lead by grasping the plug. Never pull it by the cord.
•Do not leave the unit in a location near a heat source such as a radiator or airduct, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust, mechanical vibration, or shock.
•Allow adequate air circulation to prevent internal heat build-up. Do not place the unit on a surface (a rug, a blanket, etc.) or near materials (a curtain) which might block the ventilation holes.
•Should any liquid or solid object fall into the unit, unplug (or remove batteries from) the unit and have it checked by a qualified personnel before operating it further.
•When the casing becomes soiled, clean it with a soft cloth dampened with a mild detergent solution. Never use abrasive cleansers or chemical solvents, as they may mar the casing.
•The unit is not disconnected from the AC power source (mains) as long as it is connected to the wall outlet, even if the unit itself has been turned off.

Troubleshooting
Should any problem occur with the unit, make the following checks to determine whether or not servicing is required. If the problem persists, consult the nearest Sony dealer.
The CD player does not operate.
•Did you close the CD tray?
•Did you place a disc correctly?
The disc should be placed with the labelled surface up.
•Dusty or defective disc—Clean the disc with an optional cleaning cloth. Wipe the disc from the center out.
•Take out the CD and leave the CD tray open for about an hour to dry moisture condensation.
Skipping of sound in CD operation
•Dusty or defective disc—Clean or replace the disc.
•Reduce the volume.
•Strong vibration
