Important Precautions and Safety Information
When using this machine, these basic safety precautions should always be followed to
reduce risk of fire, electric shock, and injury to people:
1 Read and understand all instructions.
2 Use common sense whenever operating electrical appliances.
3 Follow all warnings and instructions marked on the machine and in the literature
accompanying the machine.
4 If an operating instruction appears to conflict with safety information, heed the
safety information. You may have misunderstood the operating instruction. If you
cannot resolve the conflict, contact your sales or service representative for
assistance.
5 Unplug the machine from the AC wall socket before cleaning. Do not use liquid or
aerosol cleaners. Use only a damp cloth for cleaning.
6 Do not place the machine on an unstable cart, stand or table. It may fall, causing
serious damage.
7 Your machine should never be placed on, near or over a radiator, heater, air
conditioner or ventilation duct.
8 Do not allow anything to rest on the power cable. Do not locate your machine
where the cords will be abused by persons walking on them.
9 Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords. This can diminish performance,
and may result in the risk of fire or electric shock.
10 Do not allow pets to chew on the AC power or PC interface cords.
11 Never push objects of any kind into the machine through case or cabinet
openings. They may touch dangerous voltage points, creating a risk of fire or
shock. Never spill liquid of any kind onto or into the machine.
12 To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not disassemble the machine. Take it to a
qualified service technician when repair work is required. Opening or removing
covers may expose you to dangerous voltages or other risks. Incorrect reassembly
could cause electric shock when the unit is subsequently used.
13 Unplug the machine from the PC and AC wall outlet, and refer servicing to
qualified service personnel under the following conditions:
• When any part of the power cord, plug, or connecting cable is damaged or
frayed.
• If liquid has been spilled into the machine.
• If the machine has been exposed to rain or water.
• If the machine does not operate properly after instructions have been followed.
• If the machine has been dropped, or the cabinet appears damaged.
• If the machine exhibits a sudden and distinct change in performance.
14 Adjust only those controls covered by the operating instructions. Improper
adjustment of other controls may result in damage, and may require extensive
work by a qualified service technician to restore the machine to normal operation.
15 Avoid using this machine during a lightning storm. There may be a remote risk of
electric shock from lightning. If possible, unplug the AC power for the duration of
the lightning storm.
16 If you continuously print multiple pages, the surface of the output tray may become
hot. Be careful not to touch the surface, and keep children away from the surface.

Environmental and Safety Consideration
Laser Safety Statement
The printer is certified in the U.S. to conform to the requirements of DHHS 21 CFR,
chapter 1 Subchapter J for Class I(1) laser products, and elsewhere, is certified as a
Class I laser product conforming to the requirements of IEC 825.
Class I laser products are not considered to be hazardous. The laser system and printer
are designed so there is never any human access to laser radiation above a Class I level
during normal operation, user maintenance, or prescribed service condition.

Never operate or service the printer with the protective cover removed from Laser/
Scanner assembly. The reflected beam, although invisible, can damage your eyes.
When using this product, these basic safety precautions should always be followed to

Ozone Safety
During normal operation, this machine produces ozone. The ozone
produced does not present a hazard to the operator. However, it is
advisable that the machine be operated in a well ventilated area.
If you need additional information about ozone, please contact your
nearest Samsung dealer.
Power Saver
This printer contains advanced energy conservation technology that reduces power
consumption when it is not in active use.
When the printer does not receive data for an extended period of time, power
consumption is automatically lowered.

Please recycle or dispose of packaging materials for this product in
an environmentally responsible manner.
Correct Disposal of This Product (Waste Electrical &

This marking shown on the product or its literature, indicates that it
should not be disposed with other household wastes at the end of its
working life. To prevent possible harm to the environment or human
health from uncontrolled waste disposal, please separate this from

201 121) which contains notes and additional requirements to ensure network

Regulatory Compliance Statements
Wireless Guidance
Low power, Radio LAN type devices (radio frequency (RF) wireless communication
devices), operating in the 2.4 GHz/5 GHz Band, may be present (embedded) in your
printer system. The following section is a general overview of considerations while
operating a wireless device.
Additional limitations, cautions, and concerns for specific countries are listed in the
specific country sections (or country group sections). The wireless devices in your
system are only qualified for use in the countries identified by the Radio Approval Marks
on the system rating label. If the country you will be using the wireless device in, is not
listed, please contact your local Radio Approval agency for requirements. Wireless
devices are closely regulated and use may not be allowed.
The power output of the wireless device or devices that may be embedded in your
printer is well below the RF exposure limits as known at this time. Because the wireless
devices (which may be embedded into your printer) emit less energy than is allowed in
radio frequency safety standards and recommendations, manufacturer believes these
devices are safe for use. Regardless of the power levels, care should be taken to
minimize human contact during normal operation.
As a general guideline, a separation of 20 cm (8 inches) between the wireless device
and the body, for use of a wireless device near the body (this does not include
extremities) is typical. This device should be used more than 20 cm (8 inches) from the

Some circumstances require restrictions on wireless devices. Examples of common
restrictions are listed below:
Radio frequency wireless communication can interfere with equipment
on commercial aircraft. Current aviation regulations require wireless
devices to be turned off while traveling in an airplane. IEEE 802.11 (also
known as wireless Ethernet) and Bluetooth communication devices are
examples of devices that provide wireless communication.
In environments where the risk of interference to other devices or
services is harmful or perceived as harmful, the option to use a wireless
device may be restricted or eliminated. Airports, Hospitals, and Oxygen
or flammable gas laden atmospheres are limited examples where use
of wireless devices may be restricted or eliminated. When in
environments where you are uncertain of the sanction to use wireless
devices, ask the applicable authority for authorization prior to use or
turning on the wireless device.
Every country has different restrictions on the use of wireless devices.
Since your system is equipped with a wireless device, when traveling
between countries with your system, check with the local Radio
Approval authorities prior to any move or trip for any restrictions on the
use of a wireless device in the destination country.
If your system came equipped with an internal embedded wireless
device, do not operate the wireless device unless all covers and shields
are in place and the system is fully assembled.
Wireless devices are not user serviceable. Do not modify them in any
way. Modification to a wireless device will void the authorization to use
it. Please contact manufacturer for service.
Only use drivers approved for the country in which the device will be
used. See the manufacturer System Restoration Kit, or contact
manufacturer Technical Support for additional information.

Replacing the Fitted Plug (for UK Only)

MPORTANT
The mains lead for this machine is fitted with a standard (BS 1363) 13 amp plug and has
a 13 amp fuse. When you change or examine the fuse, you must re-fit the correct 13
amp fuse. You then need to replace the fuse cover. If you have lost the fuse cover, do
not use the plug until you have another fuse cover.
Please contact the people from you purchased the machine.
The 13 amp plug is the most widely used type in the UK and should be suitable.
However, some buildings (mainly old ones) do not have normal 13 amp plug sockets.
You need to buy a suitable plug adaptor. Do not remove the moulded plug.

If you cut off the moulded plug, get rid of it straight away.
You cannot rewire the plug and you may receive an electric shock if you
plug it into a socket.

MPORTANT WARNING
: You must earth this machine.
The wires in the mains lead have the following color code:
• Green and Yellow: Earth
• Blue: Neutral
•Brown: Live
If the wires in the mains lead do not match the colors marked in your plug, do the
following:
You must connect the green and yellow wire to the pin marked by the letter “E” or by the
safety ‘Earth symbol’ or colored green and yellow or green.
You must connect the blue wire to the pin which is marked with the letter “N” or colored
black.
You must connect the brown wire to the pin which is marked with the letter “L” or colored
red.
You must have a 13 amp fuse in the plug, adaptor, or at the distribution board.

This chapter gives you step-by-step instructions for setting up
your printer.

Unpacking

Remove th e p r inter a n d all of the accessories from the
packing carton. Make sure that the printer has been
packed with the followin g items:

• If any items are missing or damaged, notify y ou r dealer
immediately.
•
Components may differ from one country to another.
• The Printer software CD contains the printer driver, the
User’s Guide, and the Adobe Acrobat Reader program.
• The appearance of the power cord may differ depending on
your country’s specifications. The power cord must be
plugged into a grounded power socket.
CAUTION:
This printer weighs 28.5kg including the toner
cartridges and the cassette. Use safe lifting and handling
techniques. If you need to move the printer, it should be
moved by two people. Use the lifting handles, as shown in the
diagram (see page 1.2). Back injury could result if a single
person attempts to lift the printer.

Carefully remove all of the pack in g ta pe from the printer .

Pull the paper tray out o f the pr in ter and remove the
packing tape from the tray.

Select a location for the printer:
• Leave enough roo m to open the printer trays and
covers, and to allow for proper ventilation.
• Provide the proper environment:
- A firm, level surface
- Away from th e d i rect ai rflow o f air conditioners,
heaters, or ventilators
- Free of temperature, sunlight, and humidity extremes
or fluctuations
- Clean, dry, and free of dust
CAUTION:
You must place your printer on a level surface. If
you do not, print quality problems can occur.
Installing the Toner Cartridges

Using the handle, completely open the access door.
NOTE:
The paper transfer belt is already installed in your
printer.

Take the toner cartridges out of their packages.
CAUTION
:
• Do not use sharp objects, such as a knife or scissors, to
open the toner cartridge packages. You could damage the
surface of the toner cartridges.
• To prevent da m a g e, do no t e xp o se the to n e r ca rtridg es to
light for more than a few minutes. Cover th em with p aper to
protect them if necessary .
• Do not touch the green surface, the OPC drum, on the front
of each toner cartridge with your hands or any other
material. Use the handle on each cartridge in order to avoid
touching this area.

Holding both handles on the toner cartridges, gently rock
them from side to side to even ly distribu te th e tone r.

Place the toner cartridges on a flat surface, as shown, and
remove the paper covering the toner cartridges by
removing the tape.
NOTE
: If toner gets on your clothing, wipe it off with a dry
cloth and wash it in cold water. Hot water sets toner into
fabric.

On the inside right hand wall of the printer, a label
identifies which color cartridge goes into each cartridge
slot.

Grasp the handles on each toner cartridge. Align the toner
cartridges with the slots inside the printer and insert them
into their corresponding positions in the following order:
Yellow , Magenta, C yan, and then B lack, until they click into
place.

Close the access door. Make sure that the door is securely
latched.
CAUTION
: If the access door is not completely closed, the
printer will not operate.
NOTE
: When printing text at 5% coverage, you can expect a
toner cartridge life of about 4,000 pages for black and color.

Loading Paper
The tray (Tray1) can hold a maximum of 250 sheets of plain
paper. You ca n u s e A4 and letter-sized paper.
To load paper:
1
Pull the tray out of the printer.
2
Push down on the metal plate until it locks into position.
3
Flex the paper sheets back and forth to separate the pages
and then fan them while holding one edge. Tap the edges
of the stack on a flat surface to ev en i t u p .

Load paper with the print side facing up.
Make sure not to over fill the tray and that all four corners
are flat in the tray and under the corner brackets, as
shown below. Overfilling the tray may cause a paper jam.
NOTE
: If you want to change the size of the pap er in the tray,
refer to “Changing the Size of the Paper in the Tray” on
page 2.5.

Slide the tray back into the printer.
NOTE
: After you load paper, you need to set up your printer
for the paper type, size, and source you loaded. For details,
see the
Software section

Changing the Size of the Paper in the
Tray
The tray is preset to Lette r or A4 siz e, d e pending on your
country. To change the size to A4 or Letter, you must adjust the
paper length guide properly.

Pull the tray open. After yo u pu ll it all the w a y o ut, lift up
the front part of the tray slightly to release the tray from
the printer. Remove p ap er from the tray.

Push down on the metal plate until it locks into position.
3
Lift the paper length guide and place it in the correct
position for the paper size you are loading.

To remove the paper length guide, turn it slightly to your
right to release the locks on the b ottom o f the gu ide, the n
pull it up.
To place the paper length guide in the paper position you
want, insert the locks on the bo tto m o f the guide into the
desired paper slot and push it all the way in.

the tray , rotate the hand le counter clockwise and remo ve it
from the tray. After removing it, insert the stopper in the
other hole and rotate it clockwise to lock it into position.

Squeeze the paper width guide, as shown and slide it to
the stack of paper until it lightly touches the side of the
stack. Do not push the guide too tightly a gainst the edge
of the paper as it may cause the paper to bend.

• Do not push the width guide far enough to cause the
material to warp.
• If you do not correctly adjust the width guide, it may cause a
paper jam.

Load paper with the print side facing up. For more
information, see steps 4 and 5 on page 2.4.

To replace the tray, lower the rear edge, align it with the
slot, and slide it into the printer.
Connecting a Printer Cable
For Local Printing
To print from your computer in a local environment, you need
to connect your printer to the computer with a Universal Serial
Bus (USB) cable.
If you are a Macintosh user, you can use only a USB cable.
NOTE
: Connecting the printer to the USB port of the computer
requires a certified USB cable. You will need to buy a USB 2.0
compliant cable that is 3m or less in length.

Connect the other end of the cable to the USB port on your
computer.
NOTE
: To print using the USB interface, you must run
Windows 98SE/Me/2000/2003/XP or Macintosh with OS 10.3
~ 10.4.
For Network Printing (CLP-600N only)
You can attach your printer to a network using an Ethernet
cable (UTP cable with RJ.45 connector). The CLP-600N has a
built-in network interface card.
If you want to use the printer in both wired and wireless
network environments, you need to install an optional wired/
wireless network interface card. Contact your Samsung dealer
or the retailer where you b oug h t th e pr inter. We strongly
recommend that the card be installed by a trained service
professional.
Using an Ethernet Cable

Make sure that both the p r inte r a nd th e co mputer are
turned off.

Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet
network port on the left rear of th e p r inter.

Plug the other end of the cable into a network LAN
connection.
NOTE
: After connecting the printer, you need to configure the
network parameters on the control panel. See page 8.1. You
can use the software supplied w ith the card. Refer to the
Network Printer User’s Guide.

Plug the other end into a properly grounded AC outlet and
turn on the power.
CAUTION
:
• Some parts inside of the printer may be hot when power is
on, or after printing. Be careful not to burn yourself when
working inside th e printer.
• Do not disassemble the printer when it is turned on or
plugged in. Doing so may give you an electric shock.

Print a demo page to make sure that the printer is operating

T o change the language that is displayed on the control panel,

3 Using the Control Panel
This chapter describes how to use the printer’s control panel.

Understanding the Control
Panel
The control panel on the top right side of your CLP-600N printer
has a display and seven buttons. For the CLP-600, the control
panel has no display and two buttons.

See “Understanding Display Messages” on page 7.14 for a
complete listing of all printer messages.

Button Description

When a paper jam occurs, a lamp turns on at the
corresponding location on the Status map so that you can
locate the paper jam. If you use the CLP-600N, the
display on the control panel also shows the corresponding
error message, indicating the location of the jam. For
details on the meaning of the LEDs and error messages,
see 7.4.

On When a toner cartridge is empty, a
corresponding lamp, indicating the color of the

Install only Samsung toner cartridges,
designed for your printer.
Otherwise, if you have i nstalled the toner

cartridge into each proper cartridge slot.
Blinking When a toner cartridge is low , a co rrespon din g
lamp, indicating the color of the toner
cartridge, blinks. Order a new toner cartridge.

redistributing the toner.

A number of menus are available to make it easy for you to
change printer settings. The diagram on page 3.3 shows the
menus and all of the items available i n e a c h menu. The items
in each menu and the options you can select are described in
more detail in the tables beginning on page 3.3.
Accessing Control Panel Menus
You can configure your printer from the printer’s control panel.

When the printer does not receive data for an

automatically lowered. You can set how long the
printer waits before going to power save.

This item determines whether or not the printer
continues printing when it detects paper not
matched to your paper setting.

Off
: If a paper mismatch occurs, the message
remains on the display and the printer remains
off-line until you insert the correct paper.
•
On
: If the paper is mismatched, an error
message displays. The printer goes off-line for
30 seconds then automatically clears the
message and continues printing.
Jam Recov ery
This item determines how the printer behaves
when a paper jam occurs.

This chapter will help you understand the types of paper you
can use with your printer and how to properly load paper in the
different paper tra ys for th e b est print quality.

Choosing Paper and Other
Materials
You can print on a variety of print materials, such as plain
paper, envelopes, labels, card stock, and so on. See “Printing
on Special Print Materials” on pag e 4.4. T o get the best possible
print quality, use only high-quality, copier-grade paper.
When you choose print materials, consider the following:
•
Desired outcome
: The paper you choose should be
appropriate for the project.
•
Size
: You can use any size paper that fits easily within the
paper adjusters of the paper tray.
•
Weight
: Your printer supports paper weights as follows:
-20~24lbs (75~90g/m

) bond for Tra y1 or
optional Tray2
-20~43lbs (75~163g/m2) bond for the
Multi-purpose Tray
•
Brightness
: Some papers are whiter than others and
produce sharper, more vibrant images.
•
Surface smoothness
: The smoothness of the paper affects
how crisp the printing looks on the paper.
CAUTION
: Using a material that does not confo rm to the
specifications listed on page 10.3 can cause problems that
may require service. This service will not be covered by the
warranty or service agreeme n t s .
Sizes and Capacities
Guidelines for Paper and Special
Materials
When selecting or loading paper, envelopes, or other special
materials, keep these guidelines in mind:
• Attempting to print on damp, curled, wrinkled , or torn p aper
can cause paper jams and poor print quality.
• Use cut-sheet paper only. You cannot use multi-part paper.
• Use only high-quality, copier grade paper for the best print
quality.
• Do not use paper with irregularities, such as tabs or staples.
• Do not attempt to load any tray while printing, and nev e r
overfill the tray. This could cause a paper jam.
• Avoid paper with embossed lettering, perforations, or a
texture that is too smooth or too rough.
• Colored paper should be of the sa me high quality as white
photocopy paper. The pigments must be able to withstand
the printer’s fusing temperature of 180°C (356°F) for 0.1
seconds without deteriorating . Do n o t us e p ap e r wi th a
colored coating that was added after the pap er was
produced.
• Preprinted forms must be printed with nonflammable, heatresistant ink that does not melt, vapo rize , o r release
hazardous emissions when subjected to the printer’s fusing
temperature.
• Store paper in its ream wrapper until you are ready to use it.
Place cartons on pallets or shelves, not on the floor.
• Do not place heavy objects on top of the paper, whether it is
packaged or unpackaged.
• Keep paper away from moisture, direct sunlight, or other
conditions that can cause it to wrinkle or curl.

NOTE:
Do not use carbonless paper or tracing paper. These
types of paper are unstable at the fusing temperature and can
give off fumes, or cause damage to the printer.
Loading Paper
Proper paper loading helps prevent paper jams and ensures
trouble-free printing. Do not remove the paper tray while a job
is printing. Doing so may cause a paper jam. See “Sizes and
Capacities” on page 4.1 for acceptable paper capacities for
each tray.
CAUTION
: This printer does not spport transparencies.
Using Tray1
Load the print material y o u use fo r th e majority of your print
jobs in Tray1.
T ray1 can hold a maximum of 250 sheets of plain A4 or lettersized paper.
You can purchase an optional tray, Tray2, and attach it below
T r a y1, to load an additional 500 sheets of paper. See 9.1 for
more information about installing the optional Tray2.
To load paper, pull the tray and the load the paper
with the
print side up
.
For details about loading paper in the paper tray, see “Loading
Paper” on page 2.4.
NOTE:
If you experience problems with paper feed, place one
sheet at a time in the Multi-purpose Tray.
Using the Optional Tray
The optional tray, Tray2, can hold a maximum of 500 sheets of
plain paper.
T o load paper in Tr ay2, follow the instructions for loading paper
on page 2.4.
Using the Multi-purpose Tray
The Multi-purpose Tray is located on the right side of your
printer. It can be closed when not in use, making the printer
more compact.
The Multi-purpose Tr a y can hold sev er al sizes and type s of
material, such as cards and envelopes. Y ou ma y also w ant to
use the Multi-purpose Tray for single page print jobs on
letterhead, colored paper for use as separator sheets, or other
special materials that you do not normally keep in the paper
tray . You can load approximately 100 sheets of plain paper, 10
envelopes, 10 sheets of card stock, o r 1 0 labels at a time.
• Load only one size of print material at a time in the
Multi-purpose Tray.
• To preven t paper jams, do not add paper wh en th e re i s stil l
paper in the Multi-purpose Tr ay. This also applies to other
types of print materials.
• Print materials should be loaded face down with the top edge
going into the Multi-pur pose Tray first, a n d b e placed in the
center of the tray.

To load print material in the Multi-purpose T ray:

Lower the Multi-purpose Tray and unfold the paper support
extension, as shown.

If you are using pap er, flex or fan the edge of the paper
stack to separate the pages before loading.

Squeeze the pa per width guide and slide it to the edge o f
the print material without ca u sing it to b end.
If you want to print on previously printed paper from the
Multi-purpose Tray, the printed side should be facing up
with the uncurled edg e toward the printer . If you
experience problems with the paper feeding, turn the
paper around.
NOTE
: Make sure that you have not loaded too much print
material. The print material buckles if you load a sta c k tha t is
too deep or if you push it in too far.

When you print a document, set the paper source to
Multi-Purpose Tray
and select the appropriate paper size
and type in the software application.

Using the Manual Feed
You can manually load a sheet of print material in the Multipurpose Tray if you select
Manual Feed
in the
Source
option
from the
Paper
tab when you change print settings to print a

Software section. Manually loading paper can be helpful
when you wan t to che c k th e pr int q u ality afte r e ach page is
printed.
This loading procedure is almost the same as the procedure for
loading in the Multi-purpose Tray, except you load paper sheetby-sheet in the tra y , send p rint data to print the first page, and
press the
On Line/Continue
button ( ) on the control panel
to print each following page.

• Load envelopes into the Multi-purpose Tray only.
• Only use envelopes recommended for laser printers. Before

they are undamaged and are not stuck together.
• Do not feed stamped envelo pe s .
• Never use envelopes with clasps, snaps, windows, coated
linings, or self-stick adhesives.
To print on envelopes:

Open the Multi-purpose Tray and unfold the paper support.

Flex or fan the edge of the envelope stack to separate
them before loading .
