Rockwell Automation Publication IASIMP-QS025B-EN-P - December 2012 9
Preface This quick start describes how to use CompactLogix 5370 L2 controllers to install a simple
CompactLogix 5370 L2 control system and execute a task with a local expansion 1769
Compact I/O™ output module. The programming exam ples included are not complex, and offer
solutions to v erify that devices are functioning and communicating prop erly.
The following topics ar e described in this quick sta rt:
• Installing ha rdware fo r a ba sic Co mpactLo gi x 537 0 L2 contro l sys tem
• In stalling softwar e required for the basic Compact Logix 5370 L2 control system
• Installing and config uring an EtherNet/IP net work and a DeviceNet network
• Crea ti ng a L o g ix De s ig ne r p ro j ec t
Consider the following points:
• A typical CompactLogix 5370 L2 control system includes more components than listed in this quick start. For
example, you can use 1734 POINT I/O modules over an EtherNet/IP network in a CompactLogix 5370 L2 control
system. Other quick starts describe how to use additional components with your control system.
For a list of quick starts describing how to use other components in Logix5000™ control systems , see Choose to
Integrate Optional Devices on page 11.
• Not all tasks described in this quick start are required to complete the final task, that is, use ladder logic to test a
1769-OB16 output module as described beginning on page 63 . For example, you do not need a DeviceNet
configuration file to test the module.
We expect that you migh t attempt to complete additional tasks with y our control system by using the publications
listed on page 11. When you use those publications, some assumptions ar e made. For example , if you use a
PanelView Plus t erminal over an EtherNet/IP network in a CompactLogix 5370 L2 contr ol system, you must have
already created an L ogix Designer project and assigned an IP address to the controller .
If you complete all of the tasks described in this quick start, you can easily complete the tasks described in the
publications listed on page 11.

Install the Network Before you insta ll y our Compa ctLog ix 5 370 L2 control hard ware, you must insta ll the n etwo rk
on which it will operate, th at is, an Et herN et/IP or D eviceNet network.
For more information on install ing either o f these networks, see the publications listed in the
following table.
The publications list ed previously describe how to install the comm unication network and not
how to connect your controller to the network . Make N etwork Connections on pa ge 27

Chapter 1 Prepare the CompactLogix 5370 L2 Controller Hardware
Install the Secure Digital Card The Secure Digital (SD) card provides nonvolat ile storage for the CompactLogix 5370 L2
controlle r . Y ou can use the SD card for mult iple functions in your applicatio n, for example,
storing Logix Desig ner projects on the SD card or loading Lo gix Desig ner projects from an
SD ca rd.
The following SD cards are available with for use with y our CompactLogix 5370 L2 controller:
• 1784-SD1 card - 1 Gb of memory
• 1784-SD2 card - 2 Gb of memory
The CompactLogix 5370 L2 controlle rs are shipped from the factory with the 1784-SD1 SD
card installed.
Complete the following steps to re-install an SD card that has been removed from the controller
back into the con troller or if in stalling a new SD card into the contro ller.
1. V erify that the SD card is locked or unl oc ked acc ord ing to y our pref eren ce.
Consider these points when
deciding whether to lock the card
befor e in stal lat ion:
• If the ca rd is unlo cke d, th e
controller ca n write data to it or
read data from it.
• If the car d is lo cke d, th e contro ller can only read data from it.
WARNING: When you insert or remove the SD card while pow er is on, an electrical arc can occur . This could cause an
explosion in hazardous location installa tions.
Be sure that power is r emoved or the area is nonhazar dous before proceeding .

printed on the card.
If you feel resistance when in serting the SD card, pull it out and ch ange the orientat ion .
4. Gently press the card un til it clicks into place.
5. Close the SD card door.
