General Safety Information

WARNING! Read and understand all instructions. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious personal injury.

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS!

Work Area Safety

Keep your work area clean and well lit. Cluttered benches and dark areas invite accidents.

Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.

Keep bystanders, children, and visitors away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

Electrical Safety

Grounded tools must be plugged into an outlet, properly installed and grounded in accordance with all codes and ordinances. Never remove the grounding prong or modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs. Check with a qualified electrician if you are in doubt as to whether the outlet is properly grounded. If the tool should electrically malfunction or break down, grounding provides a low resistance path to carry electricity away from the user.

Cover of grounded outlet box

Grounding prong

Grounding prong

Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electrical shock if your body is grounded.

Don’t expose power tools to rain or wet conditions.

Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electrical shock.

Do not abuse cord. Never use the cord to carry the tools or pull the plug from an outlet. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Replace damaged cords immediately. Damaged cords increase the risk of electrical shock.

When operating a power tool outside, use an outdoor extension cord marked “W-A” or “W”. These

cords are rated for outdoor use and reduce the risk of electrical shock.

Use only three-wire extension cords which have three-prong grounding plugs and three-pole receptacles which accept the tool’s plug. Use of other extension cords will not ground the tool and increase the risk of electrical shock.

Use proper extension cords. (See chart.) Insufficient conductor size will cause excessive voltage drop, loss of power.

NOT RECOMMENDED

Before using, test the Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) provided with the power cord to insure it is operating correctly. GFCI reduces the risk of electrical shock.

Extension cords are not recommended unless they are plugged into a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) found in circuit boxes or outlet receptacles.

The GFCI on the machine power cord will not prevent electrical shock from the extension cords.

Keep all electric connections dry and off the ground. Do not touch plug with wet hands. Reduces the risk of electrical shock.

Personal Safety

Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use tool while tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medications. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.

Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Contain long hair. Keep your hair, clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry, or long hair can be caught in moving parts.

Avoid accidental starting. Be sure switch is OFF before plugging in. Carrying tools with your finger on the switch or plugging tools in that have the switch ON invites accidents.

Remove adjusting keys or switches before turning the tool ON. A wrench or a key that is left attached to a rotating part of the tool may result in personal injury.

2

Ridge Tool Company

K-40 Drain Cleaner

Do not over-reach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Proper footing and balance enables better control of the tool in unexpected situations.

Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection.

Dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection must be used for appropriate conditions.

Tool Use and Care

Use clamp or other practical way to secure and support the workpiece to a stable platform. Holding the work by hand or against your body is unstable and may lead to loss of control.

Do not force tool. Use the correct tool for your application. The correct tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it is designed.

Do not use tool if switch does not turn it ON or OFF. Any tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.

Disconnect plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the tool. Such preventive safety measures reduce risk of starting tool accidentally.

Store idle tools out of the reach of children and other untrained persons. Tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.

Maintain tools with care. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.

Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the tool’s operation. If damaged, have the tool serviced before using. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained tools.

Use only accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for your model. Accessories that may be suitable for one tool may become hazardous when used on another tool.

Keep handles dry and clean; free from oil and grease. Allows for better control of the tool.

Service

Tool service must be performed only by qualified repair personnel. Service or maintenance performed by unqualified repair personnel could result in injury.

When servicing a tool, use only identical replacement parts. Follow instructions in the Maintenance Section of this manual. Use of unauthorized parts or failure to follow maintenance instructions may create a risk of electrical shock or injury.

Charging Light

Figure 13 – Battery Charger

WARNING Do not attempt to use a step-up transformer, an engine generator or DC power receptacle.

4.Insert the battery cartridge so that the plus and minus terminals on the battery cartridge are on the same sides as their respective markings on the battery charger. Insert the cartridge fully into the port so that it rests on the charger port floor.

5.When the battery cartridge is inserted, the charging light color will change from green to red and charging will begin. The charging light will remain lit steadily during charging. When charging is completed, the charging light color will change from red to green.

NOTE! Charging time will be approximately one hour.

WARNING Charge only Makita type batteries. Other types of batteries may burst causing personal injury.

6.After charging, unplug the charger from the power source. Always cover the battery terminals with the battery cover when the batter cartridge is not used.

Important Charging Notes

1.When you charge a new battery cartridge or a battery cartridge which has not been used for a long period of time, it may not accept a full charge. This is a normal condition and does not indicate a problem. You can recharge the battery cartridge fully after discharging it completely and recharging a couple of times.

2.If you charge a battery cartridge from a just-oper- ated tool or a battery cartridge which has been left in a location exposed to direct sunlight or heat for a long time, the charging light may flash in red color. If this occurs, wait for a while. Charging will begin after the battery cartridge cools. The battery cartridge will cool faster if you remove the battery cartridge from the battery charger.

3.If the charging light flashes alternately in green and red color, a problem exists and charging is not possible. The terminals on the charger or battery cartridge are clogged with dust or the battery cartridge is worn out or damaged.

4.If you wish to charge two battery cartridges, allow 15 minutes between chargings on the battery charger.

5.Feed cable into drain until obstruction is encountered or cable begins to bind up.

6.If cable begins to bind up, release feed actuator lever and pull cable back slightly by hand. Refeed cable into blockage again. If advancing the cable with the autofeed is difficult, discontinue using it and advance the cable by hand until the line clears.

7.Once drain is open and flowing, continue feeding additional cable with autofeed to clean rest of drain.

8.The speedbump cable end indicator, located ap-

proximately 84″ from the back end of the cable, is a 1/2″ expanded bump that will not pass through the autofeed and warns the operator it is time to retrieve the cable. (Figure 23)

9.To retrieve cable, stop machine completely.

10.Switch the FOR/REV switch to REV.

11.Turn machine ON and depress the feed actuator lever. It will automatically retrieve the cable from the drain.

12.Turn machine OFF just prior to cable or tool emerging from drain opening. Retrieve by hand as cable or tool may contain debris and splash work area.

HINT! If your cable tool/retriever bulb has hooked onto a solid blockage such as a rag or ball or hair, it may be wise to pull the cable out of the drain by hand. Reversing the cable to retrieve it may cause the blockage to unscrew off the cable.

NOTE! The only adjustment on the autofeed is the round top adjustment screw under the feed actuator lever. Its purpose is to adjust the distance the feed actuator lever has to be depressed to engage the different size cables. Turn knob clockwise to accommodate the larger 3/8″ cable and turn knob

counter clockwise to accommodate the 5/16″ cable. No adjustment is necessary direct from the factory.

Special Procedures

Loading Cable Into Drum

Your K-40/K-40B is supplied with an inner drum that fits snugly inside a two-piece drum that allows easy changeout of cable. To access the inner drum feature:

1.On units supplied with mounting bracket, remove one mounting bracket bolt and loosen the remaining one. Swing mounting bracket to OPEN position (Figure 17).

3.Separate the drum front from the drum back by twisting apart (Figure 19).

Figure 19 – Twist Drum Apart

4.Lift the inner drum, with cable, out of its cradled fit.

5.Fit the new inner drum into the drum back and draw about a foot of cable out of the inner drum (Figure 20).

Figure 20 – When loading cable into an inner drum, wind the cable in CLOCKWISE.

6.Pass the exposed cable head through the drum front assembly, align the drum front with the drum back, and rotate drum front to lock into position. Tighten the screws.

Torque Arm

The K-40/K-40B is supplied with a torque arm inside the inner drum (Figure 21) and attached to the back end of the cable (Figure 22).

The torque arm retains the cable inside the inner drum of the K-40/K-40B and greatly enhances the performance of the machine. It is adjustable to different sizes of cable ranging from 1/4″ through 3/8″.

Cable End Indicator

The C-13-IC SB Cable has a “speedbump” at the back end of the cable (Figure 23). This bump in the cable will warn you to stop feeding cable out of the drum. The “speedbump” is most effective on K-40 units with the autofeed accessory. The bump will not pass through the autofeed during operation of the machine. To pass the bump through the autofeed, lift the actuator handle. Continuing to feed the cable past the speedbump may result in the cable coming out of the inner drum requiring you to reload the cable.

Maintenance Instructions

WARNING

Make sure machine is unplugged from power source before making any adjustment.

1.Cables should be thoroughly flushed with water after each use to prevent damaging effects of drain cleaning compounds. RIDGID Cable Rust Inhibitor should be applied prior to storage.

When not in use, store cables indoors to prevent deterioration by the elements.

NOTE! Cables should be replaced when they become severely corroded or worn. A worn cable can be identified when outside coils of cables become flat.

2.Use a clean cloth to wipe the unit off. Oil, grease and other substances may cause deterioration. Certain cleaning agents and solvents damage plastic parts. Some of these are: gasoline, carbon tetrachloride, chlorinated cleaning solvents, ammonia and household detergents that contain ammonia. Avoiding use of these and other types of cleaning agents minimizes the probability of damage.

3.It is a good idea to regularly drain the inner drums of any captured liquid. Simply hold the machine nose down and drain excess liquid each time the machine is used.

NOTE! Remove the Guide Hose accessory for ease of draining.

4.Store the unit where it is cool and dry. Avoid those areas where the temperature will drop to 0°F or exceed +120°F.

Autofeed

A drop of grease to the following areas once a month will extend the life of the Autofeed unit and keep it well maintained.

a.Top of Large Top Adjustment Screw

b.Threads on Bottom of Top Adjustment Screw

c.Outside Diameter of Top Roller Holder housing

There are no grease fittings to worry about, however, the autofeed will accumulate dirt, grease and debris over time. It is a good idea to periodically remove the autofeed unit and clean with cleaning solvent and a firm brush.

It is also a good idea to apply a light grease once a week, to the autofeed roller bearing surface. This will extend the life of the bearings and keep them free to operate properly.
