Leak Test Diag ram
Assembly is now complete.
All joints and connections must now be leak test ed before u sing the barbecue.
For det ails of lea k testing, please refer to instructions on pages 19 / 20.
Page 18
18
nESSENTIAL INFORMATION
Please read instructions before u sing your barbecue.
BEFORE YOU USE YOUR BARBECUE ( also se e installati on)
Perform a leak test. This is the only safe and sure way to detect any gas leaking from joints and
connections of the barbecue after assembly. Follow the leak test instructions on page 19. Check that the gas hose is free of any tension, twisting, cuts, or cracks.
Make sure your barbecue is in a safe place. It must be outdoors, on level ground and not below
ground level. Ensure that the barbecue is at least 1 metre away from any flammable materials, including trees and fences and that there are no heat sources near the barbecue (cigarettes, open flames, spark etc.)
Check that you have the correct gas bottle and regulator for your barbecue and that the gas bottle
is placed correctly in the gas bottle holder provided. Never place the gas bottle directly underneath the barbecue.
GET TING ST ARTED (also see op erat ion)
Open the hood of your barbecue. Never light your barbecue with the hood closed. Turn the gas
regulator or gas bottle valve to t he ‘on’ position. Push in the control knob of the burner you want to lig ht and t u rn it ant i clo c kwi s e until re sis tance is f e l t. Wai t 4 sec o nds and t he n cont inue tur ni ng the control knob until a click is heard. Repeat if necessary until the burner is alight. Light all other burners in the same way making sure each burner is alight before attempting to light the next. IF ANY BURNER FAILS TO LIGHT, TURN OFF THE GAS AT THE BURNERS AND THE GAS BO TTLE , W AIT FI VE MINUTE S AND TRY A GAIN. I f the burners canno t be l it using the ig nitio n syst em, t urn to the m anual lighting instructions under opera tion.
Once the burners are lit, turn all the burners to the high setting for 3-5 minutes to pre-heat the
barbecue. This should be done before each session. When pre-heating is complete, cooking can begin takin g extra care if th e burners are used in the high position.
To pre ve nt fo od sticking we r e c omm end t hat you us e a l o ng handl e d br us h t o app ly a l ight c oat o f
cooking oil to the grills and griddles before each barbecue session.
Flare-ups may occur during cooking and can be controlled by applying salt directly onto the Flame
Tamer/Lav a R ock making sure you r hands ar e protected from the heat.
If a fat fire should occur during cooking, and if safe to do so, turn off the burners and the gas at the
gas bottle and wait for the fire to go out. Do not pull out the drip tray or douse with water.
Never douse a barbecue with wat er.
Never move a barbecue when lit.
Never leave a lit ba rbecue una ttended
Never handle hot parts with unprotected hands
Keep children, anim als, and elderly people a safe distance from a li t barbecue.
WHEN YOU HAVE FINI S HE D COOKI NG (also see care and maint enance)
Turn all the burners to the high position for 3 to 5 minutes to burn off any f ood residue from the
cooking surfaces and burners. When t he barbecue has cooled, the burnt residue can be easily removed using a damp, non abrasive cloth on the cooking surfaces and a wire brush on the burners. Never us e any abrasi ve materi al o n porce lain f inishes. T he grills and gridd les are not dishwasher safe.
We do not recommend washing lava rock, the step described above should remove most food
resi due from th e lava rock.
When the barbecue has cooled, scrape away any food and fat residue from the drip tray and
disca rd. Empty and clean the Foil Liner. These routines must be complet ed after each session.
Page 19
19
STORAGE
Ensure the barbecue is properly cooled.
Always disconnect the gas bottle and store it in a safe place, never store a gas bottle indoors or on
it s side.
Store the barbecue in a cool dry place. The detachable side shelf can be removed to save space
during stor age.
Cover the burners with foil to keep t he burner hol es fr ee from in sects or other debris.
If you inten d to l eave your bar becue outside m ake sure it is protect ed fr om the elements by a heavy
duty cover, these are available from most Outback® stockists.
IMPORTANT INFORM ATION
Modification of t he barbecue may be dangerous, is n ot permitted and will nullify any warranty.
Thi s product is for outdoor use only . Do not use indoors. Do not use below gr ound lev el.
Do not store Gas bottles below ground level. LP gas is heavier than air so if a leak occurs the gas
will collect at a l ow level and could ign ite in the presence o f a flame or spar k.
Do not store or use LP gas bottles on their side as this could allow liquid gas into the supply pipes
with serious re sults.
Leak test your barbecue annually. Leak test the hose connections each time you reconnect the gas
bottle.
Always turn off the gas at the gas bottle when not in use.
Do not use aerosols near this barbecue.
GAS, RE GULAT OR AND HOSE
Thi s barbecue can run on propane butane or but ane/propane mixed LPG (liqu id petroleum gas) bottled gas. For optimal performance we recommend the use of propane gas which is supplied under a number of different names and bottle colours. Butane gas can be used but it may restrict the heat output available from the burners, particularly when the gas temperature falls below +10 degrees Celsi us. If in doubt, pl ease consul t your ga s dealer/distr ibutor.
Hose
Check that the gas hose does not touch any par t of the barbecue that may become hot during
operation.
If the hose shows any sign of damage it must be replaced with a hose that is suitable for use wit h
LPG (liquid petroleum gas) and meets the National St andards for the country of use.
The l ength of h ose should not ex ceed 1.5 metr es.
Please note: the date on the orange hose (if supplied) is the date of manufacture – not the expiry date.
You must have the correct gas bottle, regulator, and hose for the barbecue to operate safely and efficiently. Use of an incorrect or faulty regulator is dangerous and will invalidate the warranty on t his produ ct. If you are unsure, please ch eck w ith you r local gas dealer.
INSTALLATION
Precautions:
Only use this barbecue in a w ell-ventilat ed outdoor area.
Check that the barbecu e is not placed UNDER a ny combusti ble surface.
The si des of th e barbecue should never be closer than 1 metre t o any combustible material.
Do not obstruct any ven tilati on openings in th e barbecue body
Confi rm all control knobs are in the off position before c onnecti ng the r egula tor.
When changing the gas bottle, the ga s bottle must be kept away from any sources of ignition.
Always conn e ct the regula tor in accordance wi th the regulator and gas bot tle suppliers i nstru ctions
LEAK TESTIN G
Always perform a leak test in a well-ventilated area.
Step 1 - C onfirm a ll contr ol kn obs are in the off p o siti on. Step 2 - Detach the barbecue control panel located across the front of the barbecu e body by pulling off
the control knobs and removing the control panel retaining screws.
Page 20
20
Step 3 - Turn on th e gas at th e gas bottle or regulat or Step 4 - Check f or leaks by brushing a solution of ½ water and ½ liquid detergent over all the gas
system joints, including all valve connections, hose connections, and regulator connections. Step 5 - If bubbles form over any of the joints there i s a leak
Turn off the gas
Retighten all joints
Repeat test
If bubbles form again do not use the barbecue and contact your local Outback distributor for
assistance.
OPERATION
Your barbecue is not designed to be used with more than 50% of the cooking area as a solid plate – this includes baking dishes. If more than 50% of your cooking area is covered by a solid cooking surface, the barbecue could overheat causi ng damage that is not covered by w arranty.
Grill cooking
The burners heat the Flame Tamer/Lava Rock beneath the grill that, in turn, heats the food. The nat ural juices produced during cooking fall onto the Flame Tamer/Lava Rock and vaporise to form smoke. The smoke then rises and ‘bastes’ the food, giving it that un ique barbecu ed fl avour.
Griddle pl at e cookin g
The burners heat the griddle plate directly, which then cooks the food on contact. Griddle plates enable the cooking of smaller items that would, otherwise, fall through the grill. They can also be used for sea ring cu ts of mea t or cooking food li ke eggs that would not be possible to cook on a grill. Griddles can also be used to heat pans.
Roasting (hooded barbecu es only)
Your barbecue is supplied with a roasting hood rather than a lid, so you are able to roast or bake in a simi lar way as in a convention al gas ov en. For best results pla ce the food you wi sh to bak e or roast in a metal bak ing tray and s e t it o n one s id e of the co o king g rill. T urn the b ur ne rs d ire c tly under the f o o d to the ‘OFF’ position and the burners opposite the food to the ‘Medium’ setting. Close the hood and this will f o rm an oven to c o o k the f o od ‘indire c tly’. Moni to r t he te mp e rature us i ng the he a t i nd ic ator o n the hood. If the internal heat becomes too high, turn the burners to the ‘low’ position. It is not necessary or advisable to have all of the burners on high when the hood is closed. If the hood is opened during cooking to check on the progress of the food, please allow extra cooking time for the barbecue to regain its temperature. Take care when opening the hood as hot steam can be released on opening.
Warm ing Rack
Warming racks are a convenient way to keep cooked food warm or to warm items such as bread rolls. It is advisable to place food to the front of the warming rack to avoid the possibility of juic es and f at running down the back of your barbecu e. Alway s check that your warmin g rack is properly fitted before use.
Flare -up control ***Very Important Notice ***
Flar e-up s occ ur whe n me at i s b arb ecued , and i ts f at and j uic e s f all up o n the ho t la va ro c k. Sm oke of course helps give food its barbecued flavour, but it is best to avoid excessive flare-up to prevent food be i ng b ur ned . T o contro l f l are - ups , it i s ABSOLUTELY ESSENT IAL to trim away excess fat from meat and poultry befo re grilling, use cooking s auces and marinades sparingly and try to avoid very c heap cuts of me at o r meat p roduc ts as t hese te nd to have a hig h fat and water co nte nt. Also , the bur ners shoul d always be placed on the low setting during cooking. When flare-ups do occur, they can usually be exti nguished by ap plying b aking s oda or s alt di rectly o nto the l ava roc ks. A lways pro tect yo ur hands when hand li ng anything near the cooki ng surface of t he barbec ue , and take care to pro tect yourse l f from the flames . Always pro t ec t your hand s when handling anyt hing near the cooki ng s urf ace of the b arb ec ue and take care to protect yourself from the flames. If a fat fire occurs, please see the instructions under the following heading of this manual.
Page 21
21
Fat Fi res
The Foil Liner must be emptied and t he drip tray cleaned of food debris after each cooking session. If the barbecue is to be used for large gatherings, it will be necessary to turn off and cool the barbecue every two hours to remove food debr is from t he drip tray and clean out the Foil Liner , the ti m e between clea ning may need to be reduced if very fa tty foods or cheap mea t pr oducts ar e being cooked. Fa ilur e to do t his may r esult in a fat fir e, which ma y cause inj ury and could ser iously damage t he barbecue. In t he event of a fat fire.
In t he event of a fat fire;
If safe to do so, turn all control knobs to the ‘off’ position
Turn off the gas at the gas bottle
Keep everyon e at a safe distance from the bar becue and wait until the fir e has burnt out.
Do not close the hood of the barbecue.
NEVER DOUSE A BARBECUE WITH WATER. IF AN EXTINGUISHER IS USED, I T SHOULD BE
A POWDE R TYPE.
DO NOT REMOVE THE DRIP TRAY
If the fire does not seem to be abating or appears to be worsening, contact your local Fire Brigade
for a ssistan ce.
Manual igniti on instr uctions
Insert a long, l it match through the match-lighting hole in the right hand side of the body of the
barbecue until the lit end is alongside the right hand burner. Push and turn the right hand control knob anti-clockwise to the high position taking care to pr otect yourself from flam es.
When the burn er is lit turn the r em aining burners from right to left.
Confi rm that each burner is li t before turning on the nex t burner
If the right hand burner fails to light, turn off the gas and contact your local Outback dealer.
CARE AND MAI NTAINANCE
nNever handle hot parts of the BBQ with unprotected hands. nNever douse t he BBQ with wat er when it s surfaces a re hot.
General
Regularly clean you r BBQ between uses and especially aft er extended periods o f storage.
Do not leave the BBQ uncovered and exposed t o the elements when not in u se. Heavy duty covers
are available as an accessory from your Outback ® stockist. Even when stored outside or inside with a cover it is possible for mould to grow on any fat remaining on parts of the BBQ. This should be cleaned off smooth surfaces with hot soapy water.
Flame Tamer / Lava Rock can be cleaned by lighting the bur ners on full for 3 to 5 minutes. This
should be done with the lid in the raised position. Heavily impregnated Flame Tamer / Lava Rock should be turned over so that the dirty side fa ces the bur ners in order to burn off any residue.
The wooden shelf, shelf insert and bottom slats are made from hardwood ideally suited to
outside conditions. Hardwood will naturally weather and change its appearance and it is quite
natural for small cracks to appear on the surface of the wood. The wood should be regularly in spected and any weathered or damaged surfaces shou ld be recoated promptly with Yacht varnish or an external grade Polyurethane varnish. Follow the varnish manufacturer’s instructions for preparation and application.
All screws and bolts should be check ed and ti ghtened if necessar y on a regul ar basis.
Bur ner
Provided that they ar e operating correctly, in n ormal usage, burni ng off the residue after cooki ng will keep the burne rs c le an. T he b ur ne rs should be re mo ved and c le aned annually, o r whe never he avy b ui ld-up is found, to ensure that t he re are no s ig ns of blockage ( deb ri s , insects ) i n eit he r t he burner po rt ho les or the primary air inlet of the burners. Use a pipe cleaner to clear obstructions. W hen refitting the burners, be careful to check that the neck of the burner fits over the valve outlet.

Cleaning
Material
Where used
Cleaning Method Recommended
Porcelain enamel
Grills
Griddles Hood
Enamel is a thin, gl ass based coating fused onto metal and
as such needs t o be treated with ca re. Cooking oil, toget her with fa t from food being co oked can turn to car bon as a resul t of h eating and result in black flakes coming away from the cooki ng surfa ces. These ar e not har m ful. Porcel ain should be cleaned usin g hot soapy w ater or with the use a suitable cl eaning pr oduct following the m anufactures inst ructions. Due to the weight of the grills and griddle, we do not recommend cleaning in a dishwasher.
Chrome plated
Warm ing ra ck Wash with h ot soapy water. A chrome cleaner may be used
if required. To prevent rusting, wipe with cooking oil after rins ing and drying .
Wood Shelves and shel f

wooden shelv ing Body Utensil tr ays
Wipe with a cloth wrung out in hot soapy water and dry. Ex-
cess fa t and food d ebris can be removed fr om insid e the body using a plastic or wooden scraper. D o not use a brasiv es. If rust appears on the body it should be treated with a suitable rust inhibitor and painted with a heat resistant paint.
Galvanised steel
Drip tray
Foil Liner
Excess fat and food d ebris must be removed using a plastic
or wooden scra per. This needs to be ca rried out between each use of the BBQ. Excessive build up is likely to lead to a fat fi re which can be hazardous and damage the BBQ . This
is not a fault in the BBQ an d therefore is not covered by the t erms of the war ranty.
If required, the tray and foil lin er can be washed in hot soapy
water.
