Prospector Series Poppet Valves

Design Features Provide High Reliability.

Norgren Prospector Valves feature a short-stroke, positive-sealing,
cushioned poppet. This rugged, simple design eliminates metal-to­metal contact, insuring long life and trouble free operation. Shock
absorption by the resilient mass of the poppet seals virtually
eliminates the impact damage common to other designs. Worn or
damaged poppet seals can be turned over, considerably
extending their service life before replacement is necessary. With
these reversible seals, the valve may be said to carry its own
spare parts for quick and economical maintenance.

High Flow

A Cv of 1.2 to 49.5 provides exceptionally high flow, making
Prospector Poppet Valves appropriate for a wide range of
industrial applications.

Valve Accessories

Prospector Poppet Valve accessories include a footguard for foot­actuated valves, time delays for use with air and solenoid
operators, mufflers, push-in tube fittings, and optional solenoid
operators.

Nitrile Rubber-Based Seals

All Norgren Prospector Valves utilize nitrile O-rings and seals for
superior compatibility, wear, and operation over a wide
temperature range.

Port Identification

Each of the ports is identified by a permanent marking adjacent to
the port on the body or subbase.

Two Mounting Styles

All Prospector Valves are manufactured with
mounting holes and are available as inline
mounted valves. The 4-port/2-position (4-way)
valves are also available in a single subbase
mounted style. Subbase valves are attached
to a single subbase with six socket head cap
screws, providing providing easy removal and
installation.

Durable Finish

External surfaces are protected with an oven
cured, epoxy resin paint which provides
excellent corrosion and chip resistant
protection.

Aesthetic Appearance

Norgren's high luster black gives any control
circuit installation the quality appearance
reflecting the superior operating capability built
into every Prospector Valve.

Prospector Series Poppet Valves

Standard Solenoid Operator Features

Rotatable Connector and Coil

The standard cable grip connector used on basic 1/4" and 1/2"
valves can be rotated 180°, and the solenoid coil can be turned in
increments of 90°, making the operators adaptable for easy
installation. The standard cable grip connector used on basic 1"
and 2" valves can be turned in increments of 90°.

Low Wattage Solenoid Operators

The standard solenoid operator used on basic 1/4" and 1/2"
valves requires only 6 WDC and 7 WAC of power. It is available in
a low wattage option that requires only 2 WDC and 3.5 WAC. The
standard solenoid operator used on basic 1" and 2" valves
requires 8 WAC and DC.

Solenoid Diffuser Plug

A diffuser plug installed in the pilot exhaust on basic 1/4" and 1/2"
valves helps prevent entry of contaminants during shipping and
normal operation. It may be removed when minimum response
times are desired.

Electrical Connector Identification

Up to three lettered or numbered plates snap into a slot molded
into the standard cable grip connector to identify that operator
within the system.

Solenoid Manual Overrides.

Standard solenoid operators are furnished with
a nonlocking manual override to provide a
means of shifting the valve without electrical
power. Optional solenoid operators with a
locking override, or without an override, are
also available.

High Flow Pilot Exhaust Orifice.

Oversize pilot exhaust orifice provides rapid
return time when valve is de-energized.

Electrical Connector Options.

A cable grip connector with indicator light; a
1/2" NPT conduit connector; and a 5- foot,
three-conductor, molded cable with or without
indicator light, surge protection and reverse
voltage protection are available.

Prospector Series Poppet Valves

2-Port/2-Position

These 2-way valves have an inlet and outlet port and are used as
shutoff valves that open or close an air line. They are available in
normally closed or normally open models. The normally closed
model blocks flow when in its normal position, and permits flow when
it is actuated. The normally open model permits flow when in its
normal position, and blocks flow when actuated. Typical applications
include on-off control of main plant air, air to branch lines, systems
and air motors.

Flow Diagrams

3-Port/2-Position

These 3-way valves have an inlet, outlet, and exhaust port and are
typically used to pressurize and then exhaust air from such devices
as single-acting cylinders. They are available in normally closed or
normally open models. The normally closed model exhausts air
from the device when in its normal position, and pressurizes the
device when actuated. The normally open model pressurizes the
device when in its normal position and exhausts air from the device
when actuated.

The normally closed valve is available with two options: a position
indicator pin and an air or solenoid momentary signal operator.
The indicator pin can be used to operate a switch or other device to
provide a signal for a control circuit. The momentary signal
operator is used when it is desirable to control the valve with two
alternately applied momentary signals (first signal shifts and holds the
poppet; the second allows the poppet to return to its normal position).

Inlet Blocked Pressure to OUT Port

3-Port/2-Position (Multi­Directional)

These 3-way valves can be used in four
different ways — as a distributor, directing air
first to one port, then to another; as a selector,
directing first high, then low pressure air (or
vacuum) to the same outlet; as a standard 3­port/2-position normally closed valve; and as a
standard 3-port/2-position normally open *
valve. Multi-directional valves are the only poppet
valves with which speed controls can be installed
in the exhaust port.

Prospector Series Poppet Valves

4-Port/2-Position (4-Way)

This 4-way valve has a normally closed and a
normally open 3-way valve element in a common
body. Both elements are actuated simultaneously
by a single operator. The valve body has an inlet,
exhaust, and two outlet ports. In the normal
position, pressurized air is directed to one outlet
port and air is exhausted from the second outlet
port. In the actuated position, the connections
are reversed. Typical applications include control
of double acting cylinders and reversible air
motors.

This valve is available with an optional air or
solenoid momentary signal operator.
Momentary signal operators are used when it is
desirable to control the valve with two alternately
applied momentary signals. The first signal shifts
and holds the valve poppets in the actuated
position; the second allows the poppets to return
to the normal position.

The 4-port/2-position (4-way) valve is also
available with an optional air or solenoid twin
operator, which allows independent operation of
each valve element.

4-Port/2-Position (3-Way Twin, Normally
Closed)

This 3-way twin valve has two normally closed 3-way valve
elements in a common body. Each element is capable of
independent actuation by an air or a solenoid operator. The valve
body has an inlet, exhaust, and two outlet ports. In the normal
position, pressurized air is blocked at the inlet port and air is
exhausted from both outlet ports. It functions the same as two 3­port/2-position valves but provides greatly simplified plumbing and
reduced package size.

NOTE
This valve may be used as a 3-position, 4-way, spring centered
valve with cylinder ports open to exhaust in centered or normal
position.

Options Information

For optional features, note the valve model number that comes closest to the desired valve from the preceding order table. Change the model
number as shown in the following diagram to obtain the desired option. For example: the ordering table on VAL-12-9 shows D1022C-00-CY, a 3­port/2-position valve with a solenoid operator, spring return and non-locking override. To use this valve with a locking override change the last two
digits to CE, as shown below. To order operators with fluorocarbon elastomers, please contact Technical Services. See following page for optional
operator voltages and connectors.

For on-off application of vacuum, use a
normally closed 2-port/2-position (2-way) valve.
When the valve is actuated, vacuum will be
applied to the outlet port.

For selecting alternately between vacuum and
pressure, use a normally open 3-port/2-position
(3-way) valve. Connect the vacuum to the exhaust
port and pressure to the inlet port. When the
valve is actuated, vacuum will be applied to the
outlet port.

For selecting alternately between vacuum and
vent, use a normally open 3-port/2-position (3­way) valve. Connect the vacuum to the exhaust
port and vent the inlet port. When the valve is
actuated, vacuum will be applied to the outlet
port.

In addition, a 4-port/2-position (4-way) valve
can be connected the same way as 3-port/2­position (3-way) valves for selecting alternately
between vacuum and pressure or vacuum and
vent. That is, connect the vacuum to the exhaust
port and pressure or vent to the inlet port. When
the valve is actuated, the cylinder ports (outlets)
will be alternately switched between vacuum and
pressure or vacuum and vent.
