Your SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card is a small piece of plasti c locat ed in the SI M card holder in the back of your phone, underneath the battery.

Your phone comes with a Standard Lithi um Ion battery.
1 Remove the back phon e cover. 2 Insert the top of the battery into the battery area.

Turning the PIN Requirement On and Off
When the SIM PI N requir ement is off, your phone can be us ed without entering a PIN.
Important: When the SIM PIN requirement is off,
the personal data on your SIM card is not protected. Anyone can use your phone and access your personal data.
When the SIM PI N requirement is on, you are

SIM Card Security
Entering the PIN
1 When the Enter SIM PIN Code screen appears
after you power on your phone, enter your SIM PIN.
2 Press A under Ok.
The message S IM Unlocked displays.
Important: If you enter your PIN incorrectly 3 times,
your SIM card is blocked. To unblock your SIM card, you must contact Nextel
Changed: SIM PIN displays.
Unbl ocking the PI N
If you enter your PIN inco rrectly three times, your SIM card is blocked. To unblock your SIM ca rd, you must contact Nextel Customer Care to get a PIN Unblock Code (PUK).
Important: If you unsuccessfully enter the PUK
code 10 times, your SIM card is permanently blocked and must be

Important: Failure to fully extend or retract the
antenna until the antenna clicks into place causes severely degraded performance, which may result in missed calls, dropped calls, or garbled audio.

soon as you receive it . Nextel will provide y ou with a temporary phone number so that you can begin usin g your phone immediately. Once the number you have brought to Nextel is activated, your temporary phone number wil l be deact ivate d and service with your previous carrier will be cancelled automatically. You will receive a text message on your Nextel phone letting you know that activation is complete. Simply turn your phone off and back on again to complete activation.

Making Calls
Your i205 phone make s tw o types of calls: digital cellular phone calls and Dir ect Connect calls. Wit h Direct Connect calls, you use your phone as a long -range, digital walkie-t alkie.
Phone Calls
1 Enter the number you want to call. 2 Press s to place the call.
Dialing Direct Connect® Numbers
Every Direct Connec t numbe r has 3 pa rts — an area ID, a network ID, and a member ID — with an aster is k betw e en e ach of th ese p art s. Fo r exa mpl e: 999*999*9999.
When you place a Direct Connect call, you must enter the whole Direct Connect number including the asterisks.

Making Emergency Phone Calls
Your phone supports emergency calling. Emergency phone calls can be made even when
limitations of this fe ature, always provide your best knowledge of your location to the emergency response center when you make an emerge ncy call.
Important: Emergency calls cannot be placed while
the keypad is locked .
Important: If you have not registered on the
network, emergency calls cannot be placed while your SIM card is in your phone.

Important: If you are bringing your phone number
to Nextel from your previous carrier, you may receive a temporary telephone number while your Nextel phone is being programmed with your permanent phone number. If you make a call to 911 and the call fails, the 911 emergency response center will not be able to call you back on your Nextel phone if in the meantime, your Nextel phone has been pr ogrammed with your

Sen din g a call aler t lets th e rec ip i e nt kn ow yo u want to talk to him or her on a Direct Connect call.
When you send a call alert, the recipient’s phone emits a series of beeps, or vibrates, and disp lays your name or Direct Connect number.

When you receive a call alert, you mus t answer, queue, or clear it. You canno t receive phone calls or Direct Connect calls until you do .
To answer a call alert, press the PTT button to make a Direct Connect call to the sender.
To queue a call alert, press A under Queue. To clear a call alert, press A under Clear.

Recent Calls
The recent calls li s t stores the numbers of the 20 most recent calls you have made and received.
To view the recent calls list: 1 From the idle screen, press the down arrow on
the navigation key. -or- From the main menu, select Recent Calls.
2 Scroll through the list.
Note: The recent calls list also stores call alerts
you have re ceiv ed . T hey appe ar as Di rect Connect calls. Call alerts remain in your recent calls list until you delete them or
until the y reach the end of the list. To get more informat ion on a recent call: 1 From t he recent calls list, scro ll to the call you
want information on.

Entering Te xt
You can enter text into your phone using th e traditional method of pressing a key several times for each character, or by pressing a k ey once f or each letter while words likely to be the one you want are chosen from a database. You can also enter symbols and numbers into a text field.

Press any key on the keypad to enter the letters,

For exampl e, to type “test” press 8 3 7 8. The displayed word may change as you typ e it.
Do not try to correct the word as you go. Type to the end of the word before editing.
3 If the word that appears is not the desired word,
press 0 to ch an ge the word on the displ ay to the next most likely word in the database.
Repeat until the desired word appears.

Contacts
Contacts stores up to 600 numbers or addresses. Each Contacts entry can store several number s or addresses.
Information stored in Contacts is saved on your SIM card.
A Cont acts entry contains:
A name — A name is required if you are storing

stored must be assig ned a Contacts type:

Note: You can store numbers up to 64 digits
long, but every 20 digits must be separated by a pause or wait. See “Creating Pause s and W aits” on page 37.
A Speed D ial number — When yo u store a phone number, it is assigned a Speed Dial number. You can accept the default Speed Dial number or change it.
A voi ce na me — I f yo u cr ea te a voi ce na me for a number, you can then dial that number by saying

Creating Pauses and Waits
When storing a number, you can p rogram your phon e to pause or wait between digits while

Press and hold * until the letter W appears. The W means your phone waits bef ore dialing further.
If you store 1703 5551235W1234, when you select this number and make a ca ll, you r phone dials the first 11 digits and then waits. A message a ppears asking if you want to send the rest of the digits. Press A under Yes to dial the last 4 digits.

Memo
Memo lets you store a number, make a call to that number, and save it to Contacts.
To create a memo:
1 From the main menu, select Memo. 2 Enter the nu mber using your keypad. 3 Press A under Store.

Call Forwarding
Call f orwarding sends calls to the phone numbers you specify. You can forward al l calls to one numbe r or forward missed cal ls to different numbers depending o n the reason you missed th e call.
You can forwa rd phone lines 1 and 2 independently.
To forward all calls:
1 From the main menu, select Call Forward. 2 Press A under Change. 3 Select All Calls. 4 Scroll to To. 5 Press A under Change.

Turning Off Call Forwarding
If you don’t want all your calls forw arded, turn the feature off:
1 From the main menu, select Call Forward. 2 Press A under Change.

• If Unreachable — Your phone is out of
cove rage or powered off. Note: If you want a type of missed call se nt to
voi ce mail, the call forwarding number for that type of missed call must be your voice ma il acce ss numbe r. In most cases , you r voice mail access number is you r area code + first 3 digits of your PTN +

Advanced Calling Features
Call Waiting
Call Waiting lets you receive a second call while on an active call. Call Waiting is always available, unless you turn it off for a specific call.

Customizing Your Phone
Changing the Phone Covers
To remove the phone covers: 1 Remove the back phone cover as described in
“Removing the Back Phone Cover” on page 2.
2 To loosen the front phone cove r, gently lift the
top tabs and pull the phone cover away from the phon e sl ig htly.
3 To loosen the front phone cover further, gently
pull the sides outward at the side tabs.

To replace the phone covers or put on new phone covers:
1 Place the keypad inside the front phone cover.

2 Line up the bottom of the front phone cover with
the bottom of your phone. Tabs in the corners of the front phone cover fit into slots in the corners of y our phone.

If you use a headset or similar device with your phone, you can set your phone to send incoming sound to the headset only, or to the headset and the speaker at the same time:

Using a Remote PTT Button
If you ar e using a headse t or other accesso ry with a remote PTT button, you can use the remote PTT button for phone calls and Direct Connect calls.
For phone calls, use the remote PTT button to answer calls, switch between calls, and end ca lls. Hold the remo te PTT bu tto n for less tha n 2 seconds to answer calls and switch between calls. Hold the remo te PTT bu tto n for more than 2 seconds to end calls.
