Getting started with the NETGEAR® GS308P 8-Port PoE Gigabit

Ethernet Unmanaged Switch

Frequently Asked Questions

The GS308P is an 8-port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch with 4 ports PoE-capable and in a metal case. As an Unmanaged Switch, it is plug-and-play, so that once it is powered on and cabled correctly, it will immediately work (i.e. it is not configurable).

1. What are the key features of the GS308P?

8 copper 10/100/1000Mbps RJ-45 Ethernet ports

Ports 1-4 are PoE 802.3af capable of providing up to 15.4W per port, and not to exceed 53W total across all active PoE ports

2. What is 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) compliance?

802.3az is an IEEE standard, which allows for less power consumption during periods of low data activity.

3. Does the GS308P support jumbo frames?

Yes, it supports jumbo frames up to 9720 bytes.

4. How many MAC address table entries does the GS308P support?

4K.

5. What is Power over Ethernet (PoE) and how do I use it?

Power over Ethernet uses Ethernet cables to supply power to other PoE capable devices on the network, such as Wireless Access Points, IP cameras, VOIP phones, and other switches, etc. The GS308P is a Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) device and is compliant with the IEEE 802.3af specification. It can supply power to any Powered Device (PD) which supports this same standard. This feature allows the user to power these devices without the need for a separate power supply or the need for an electrical outlet near the PD device.

6. What is the maximum PoE power that the GS308P can supply?

The maximum power that the GS308P can deliver to all PDs is 53 Watts total, with a maximum power to each port of 15.4W. Supplied power is prioritized according to the port number (i.e. Port 1, followed by Port 2, and so on) up to the total power budget of the device (53W). If the power requirements for the attached devices exceeds the total power budget, the device on the highest port number (Port 4) with be disabled to ensure that the devices connected to the higher priority ports (Ports 1-3) are supported first. It is important to note that just because a device is listed as an 802.3af PoE Device does not necessarily mean that it requires the maximum power (15.4W) limit of the specification. Many devices require less, allowing all four PoE ports to be active simultaneously.

7. What is the PoE Max LED for?

The PoE Max LED indicates how much power is available for your PD.

“Off” indicates there is at least 7 Watts of PoE power available.

“Solid Yellow” indicates less than 7 Watts PoE power is available.

“Blinking Yellow” indicates the PoE Max LED was active in the previous 2 minutes.

8. What type of AC/DC power adapter does the GS308P use?

The GS308P PoE switch comes with an external 48V/1.25A AC/DC power adapter.
