Introduction to CITAN, Model Series 415
Dear Reader,
– This printout will not be recorded by the update service. Status: 09 / 2012 –
Preface
This Introduction into Service Manual presents the new Mercedes-Benz Citan of model series 415.
The Mercedes-Benz Citan is the first product of the partnership between Daimler AG and RenaultNissan AG.
The familiar Mercedes-Benz attributes of added value, quality and longevity have been aimed for and achieved throughout the vehicle!
The purpose of this brochure is to acquaint you with the technical highlights of this new vehicle in advance of its market launch. It is intended to provide information for people employed in service, maintenance and repair as well as for aftersales staff. It is assumed here that the reader is already familiar with the Mercedes-Benz model series currently on the market.
This Introduction into Service Manual is not intended as an aid for repairs or for the diagnosis of technical problems. For such needs, more extensive information is available in the Workshop Information System (WIS) and in the Diagnosis Assistance System (DAS). WIS is updated monthly. Therefore, the information available there reflects the latest technical status of our vehicles.
This Introduction into Service Manual presents initial information relating to the new Citan in model series 415 and, as such, is not stored in WIS. The contents of these brochures are not updated and no provision is made for supplements. We will publicize modifications and new features in the relevant WIS documents. The information presented in this Introduction into Service manual may therefore differ from the more up-to-date information found in the WIS.
All information relating to technical data, equipment and options is valid as of the copy deadline in July 2012 and may therefore differ from the current production configuration.

Front
The first feature to strike the eye is the typically Mercedes appearance of the Citan.
Overall vehicle
The clear glass headlamps are marked by a smooth transition between the matt gray sections and the stylish chromium-plated elements.
Rear
The rear end, equipped either with rear-end doors or a liftgate, also has familiar Mercedes features.
The angular lines of the rear window continue into the angular lines of the rear lamps, a design which hints at that of the Mercedes Sprinter. The red clear glass rear lamps are characterized by a combination of shiny and matt chrome-plated lines.

Windows
All windows are installed flush with the surface and are made of heat-insulating, tinted glass in the passenger compartment. Manual front windows are standard equipment (crank mechanism). Side windows are fitted between the B and C-pillar on both the partially glazed Mixto panel van and fully glazed passenger van. Only the passenger van features additional side windows on the left and right between the C and D-pillar.
Windows with a stronger tint are available for the rear compartment and rear window as an additional special equipment option in order to reduce heating of the interior compartment and further improve the external appearance of the vehicle. Their light transmission is greater than or equal to 70% and energy transmission less than or equal to 45%.
Wiper/washer system
Outside mirrors
The glass of the left and right outside mirrors is aspherical as standard to improve safety.
Overall vehicle
Other available options include:
• Heated and electrically adjustable outside mirrors
• Heated, electrically adjustable and power folding outside mirrors
The Citan features a parallel windshield wiper system with bracket-mounted or flat wiper blades which can be controlled by a rain/light sensor (SA). On vehicles with glazed asymmetric rear-end doors (panel van or Mixto) or liftgate, a single rear window wiper is installed.

Interior
– This printout will not be recorded by the update service. Status: 09 / 2012 –
The interior of the Citan offers design, comfort and quality at the usual high standard of Mercedes-Benz vans.
Overall vehicle
This is reflected by the functional and ergonomic operating concept, the flexible interior concept and the wide-range of stowage possibilities. The interior trim is as high quality as it is functional.
Design
The clearly arranged interior compartment combined with the familiar Mercedes operating philosophy provides a high-quality, functional and coherent impression at first glance. The round air vents also used on other model series are again found here.
The graining on the upper section of the instrument panel ensures scratch resistance and easy cleaning.
Seat upholstery
The robust, non-irritant and easy-care seat covering fabric used as standard is identical to that of the Vito and Sprinter. It features a combination of black, 4mmthick textile fabric with gray check pattern (center of seat) and 2mm-thick, black flat-woven fabric (side seat cushions/backrests, head restraints and armrests). The rear of the seat backrests is covered in black, 1mm-thick imitation leather.
The sidewall trim consists of an anthracite-colored flat-woven fabric with a color to complement the seat design.
The center panel of the front doors between the door handle and speaker can also be optionally covered in a suitable fabric. Grained plastic is used here instead as standard.
Colors and materials
The same fabrics, coverings and materials are used for the interior design as those which are used in other van model series.
Trim panels and other interior materials
All trim panels and interior materials of the new Citan are high-quality as well as functional and easy to clean. Black polypropylene plastic is the main material used for the interior paneling.

Rear compartment
The rear compartment of the Citan can be arranged flexibly. The passenger compartment offers space for

the driver and front passenger on the panel van and for up to three additional passengers on the rear bench seat of the Mixto and passenger van. The functional cargo area of the new Citan is also highly versatile due to the various partition walls and options which are available.
Cargo area concept
The cargo area concept of the Citan offers flexible loading possibilities. Anchors (anchoring lugs) in the floor and, where applicable, on the side walls can be used to secure loads.
An optional cargo area cover for the passenger van can be hooked into the cargo area trim on the left and right-hand sides. This consists of two fixed covering parts which conceal the contents of the cargo area. There are three possible positions for the cargo area cover:
Securing loads
Anchoring lugs are embedded into the floor of the cargo area and, where applicable, into the side panels (except passenger van) for the purpose of securing loads. These protect the driver from the possibility of cargo sliding around in the vehicle, while also protecting the sidewalls, panels and cargo being transported from damage. A rail on the side wall with two movable anchoring lugs is also available optionally.
• Top, whereby one section is folded down and can be placed on the other section
• Bottom
• In the storage position at the rear of the rear bench seat

Partition walls and load protection grilles
Various partition wall and load protection grille options are available for the Citan to safely isolate the passenger compartment from sliding loads in the cargo area.
Overall vehicle
Panel van
• Full-width partition wall without window (standard)
• Full-width partition wall with window (SA)
• Omission of partition wall (SA)
• Steel load protection grille, folding, for passenger side or full-width (SA).
If the passenger seat is folded down, the cargo area can be extended by the space over the folded seat. The hinged section can be folded through 90° behind the passenger seat to protect the driver from the cargo.
Mixto
If the partition wall is omitted, an inside rearview attached to the windshield mirror can be included. The manually adjustable, antiglare rearview mirror is installed as standard on the passenger van and is otherwise available as an option. It can be omitted on panel vans with partition wall but is still installed if a light/rain sensor is ordered because this is located in the mirror housing.
• Fixed steel load protection grille on C-pillar (SA). The fixed steel load protection grille is attached to the C-pillar behind the rear bench seat. It allows up to five people plus cargo to be transported simultaneously.
• Folding 1st row 3-passenger bench seat with load protection grille (SA). This 3-passenger bench seat incorporates a folding load protection grille at the rear. Folding down the rear bench seat allows the cargo area to be enlarged if necessary and the bench seat acts as a load protection grille. The bench seat can then no longer be used. This turns the five-seater Mixto into a two-seater with highly variable cargo area.

Passenger compartment concept
Alongside the trunk/cargo area, the passenger compartment can also be used very flexibly. This is enabled, for example, by the split rear seats on the passenger van. All LHD vehicles are equipped with a right-hand sliding door as standard to enable easy access to the cargo area or 3-passenger bench seat in the rear.
2-seater/5-seater
Overall vehicle
As described previously, the driver and front passenger seats are separated from the cargo area by a full-width partition wall installed as standard on all panel vans.
