The First 1500 km (1000 Miles)
The more cautiously you treat your vehicle during the break-in period, the more satisfied you will be with its per formance later on. Therefore, drive your vehicle during the firs t 1500 km (1000 miles) at moderate vehicle and engine speeds.
During this period, avoid heavy loads (full throttle driving) and high RPM (no m ore than 2/3 of m aximum permis sible speed in each gear).
Avoid accelerating by kickdown. It is not recom mended to brake the vehi cle by manually shifting to a lower gear. We recommend to select posi tions " 3 or 2 only at m oderate speeds (for hill driving).
After 1500 km (1000 miles) speeds may gradually be increased to the permissible maximum.

In either case we recomm end that you have the malfunction checked as soon as possible. See page 70
13
Catalytic Co nverter C autions Your MERCEDES-BENZ is equipped
with m onolithic catalytic converters, an important elem ent in conjunction with the 0 2-sensor to achieve sub stantial control of the pollutants in the exhaust emissions. Keep your vehicle in proper operating condition by fol lowing our recomm ended m ainte nance instructions as outlined in your maintenance booklet.
Caution!
To prevent dam age to the catalytic converters, use only premium unleaded gasoline in this vehicle. Should any noticeable irregularities in the engine operation occur, exces sive unburned fuel may reach the converter causing it to overheat.
Warning! As with any vehicle, do not idle, park
or operate this vehicle in areas where combustible materials such
as grass, hay or leaves can come into contact with the hot exhaust system, as these materials could be ignited.
14
Starting and Turning o ff the Engine Engage parking brake and move the
gear selector lever in either P " or N position before starting the engine.
Turn key to steering lock position 2. The charge indicator lamp should com e on.
Cold Engine
Turn key in steering lock clockwise to the stop. Do not depress accelerator. Release key only when the engine is firing regularly.
At ambient tem peratures below
18° C (0° F), depress accelerator three tim es prior to starting.
Hot Engine
Turn key in steering lock clockwise to the stop. Do not depress accelerator. If the engine has not fired after approx. 4 seconds, depress accelera to r and continue cranking until the engine is firing regularly. Release key and back off accelerator.
At very high coolant tem pe ratures the engine starting time can be shortened if the accelerator is depressed slowly at the beginning of the starting pro cess.
Turning off
Turn the key to steering lock p o si tion 0 and only remove the key when the vehicle is stopped.
If the coolant temperature is very high (e.g. after hard driving on mountain roads), do not shut off the engine immediately, allow it to run for 1 2 m inutes at increased idle speed.
Im portant!
Due to the installed starter non repeat unit, the key m ust be returned to steering lock position 0 before a new starting attem pt is made.
Observe the oil pressure gauge im m ediately after starting the engine. In a very cold engine the oil pressure will only rise slowly, some time after the engine has started. Do not speed up the engine before pressure is registered on the pressure gauge.
The charge indica tor lamp should go out as soon as the engine has started.
In areas where tem peratures fre quently drop below 25° C ( 13° F),w e recomm end that a block heater be installed. Your authorized MERCEDES-BENZ dealer will advise you on this subject.
Driving Instructions
Power assistance
When the engine is not running, the
brake and steering system s are w ith out pow er assistance. Under these circumstances, a m uch greater effort
is necessary to stop or steer the vehi cle.
Brakes
Caution!
When driving down long and steep grades, relieve the brakes by shifting into 3 or 2 . This helps prevent overheating of the brakes and reduces brake pad wear. Do not exceed engine speed limits (see page 65).
After hard braking it is advisable to drive on fo r some time so the air
stream will cool down the brakes faster.
Warning! After driving in heavy rain for some
time without applying the brakes or
through water deep enough to wet
brake components, the first braking
action may be somewhat reduced
and increased pedal pressure may
be necessary. Be sure to maintain a
safe distance from vehicles in front.
The condition of the parking brake
system is checked each time the car is in the shop for maintenance.
Between maintenance checks it is a good practice to apply the parking brake once or tw ice while driving at approximately 50 km /h (30 mph) on a dry straight road. Apply brake lightly until a slight drag on the wheels is felt. Keep applying brake for about 10 seco nds while pulling the release handle out before releasing the park ing brake completely. This practice
will keep the parking brake at maxi
mum efficiency.
Warning!
The stop lamps will not come on
when applying the parking brake only. Perform the procedure in the previous paragraph only when the road is clear of other traffic.
Caution!
Resting your foo t on the brake pedal will cause excessive and premature wear of the brake pads.
All che cks and maintenance work on the brake system should be carried out by an authorized MERCEDES-
BENZ dealer. If the parking brake is released and
the brake warning lamp in the instru
ment cluster stays on, the brake fluid level in the reservoir is too low.
Brake pad wear or a leak in the sys tem may be the reason for low brake fluid in the reservoir.
Have the brake system inspected at
an authorized MERCEDES-BENZ
dealer without delay.
Install only brake pads and brake fluid
recommended by MERCEDES-BENZ.
If other than recommended brake
pads are installed, the braking pro
perties of the vehicle can be affected
to an extent that the safety is sub
stantially impaired.

Tires
Tread wear indicators (TWI) are
required by law. These indicators are
located in six places on the tread cir cum ference and become visible at a depth of approx. 2 mm (V16 in), at which point the tire is considered worn and should be replaced.
The tread wear indicator appears as a solid band across the tread.
Warning! Do not allow your tires to w ear down
too far. With less than 3 mm (Vs in) of tread, th e adhesion properties on a wet road fall off sharply.
Depending upon the weather an d /or road surface (conditions), the trac tion varies widely.
Specified tire pressure m ust be main tained. This applies particularly if the tires are su b jected to high loads (e.g.
high speeds, heavy loads, high
ambient temperatures).
Aquaplaning
Depending on the depth of the w ater
layer on the road, aquaplaning may occur, even at low speeds and w ith
new tires. Avoid tra ck grooves in the
road and apply brakes cautiously in the rain.
Tire traction
The safe speed on a wet, snow cov ered or icy road is always low er than on a dry road.
You should pay particular attention to the conditio n of the road as soon as the prevailing tem peratures fall close to the freezing point.
Warning! If ice has formed on the road, tire
traction will be substantially reduced. Under such weather condi tions, drive, steer and brake with extreme caution.
We recomm end M + S radial-ply tires fo r the winter season for all four wheels to insure normal balanced handling characteristics. On packed snow, they can reduce your stopping distance as compared with summer tires. Stopping distance, however, is still considerably greater than when the road is wet or dry.

Parking Warning! To reduce the risk of personal injury
as a result of vehicle movem ent, before leaving the vehicle always:
1. Keep foot on brake pedal.
2. Firmly depress parking brake pedal.
Slowly release brake pedal.
3.
4. Move the selector lever to position P.
Turn front wheels towards the
5. road curb.
6. Turn the key to steering lock position 0 and remove.
Note: It is advisable to set the parking brake
whenever leaving the vehicle. Also, when parking on hills, always apply the parking brake. In addition, move selector lever to position P .
Winter Driving Instructions
The m ost important rule for slippery or icy roads is to drive sensibly and to avoid abrupt acceleration, braking and steering action. Do not use the cruise control system under such conditions.
When the vehicle is in danger of skid ding, move selector lever to position
"N . Try to keep the vehicle under
control by means of corrective steer
ing action.
Road salts and chemicals can adversely affect braking efficiency. Increased pedal force may become necessary to produce the normal brake effect. We therefore recom mend depressing the brake pedal repeatedly when traveling on salt- strew n roads at length. This can bring road salt im paired braking efficiency back to normal. A prerequisite is, however, that this is possible without endangering other drivers on the road.
If the vehicle is parked after being driven on salt treated roads, the brak ing efficiency should be tested as soon as possible after driving is resumed while observing the safety rules in the previous paragraph.

22
Tem perature Selection (° C)
Air Recirculation
The desired interior temperature can be selected by rotating the temperature selector. The selected
temperature is reached as quickly as possible and maintained. A basic setting of 22° C (72° F) is reco m mended. To avoid undesirable temperature fluctuations,
a set temperature should only be readjusted in small increments.
If desired, the temperature selector can be rotated to the
end positions M IN and M AX . This overrides the automatic mode.
MIN (detent) = peak cooling. The system operates w ith recirculated air at outside tem peratures above 20° C (68° F).
"MA X" (detent) = m aximum heating. If button £ 1 is depressed with the temperature selector in the M IN or MAX end positions, the fan will run at near maximum speed.
Pressing the symbol-side of the air recirculation
switch causes air to be recirculation without addi
tional fresh air and the red indicator lamp to light up. After a while the air recirculation mode will sw itch off automatically, including the indicator lamp.
By pressing the symbol-side of the air recirculation
switch when cooling:
The system will automatically switch from recirculated air
back to fresh air after approx. 30 minutes at outside tem peratures above approx. 7° C (45° F).
By pressing the symbol-side of the air recirculation switch when heating:
The system will autom atically switch from recirculated air
back to fresh air after 5 minutes at outside temperatures below approx. 7° C (45° F).
This mode can be selected to prevent annoying odors or dust from entering the cars interior.
If the windows should fog up from the inside, switch from recirculated air back to fresh air by pressing the lower half of the air recirculation switch (the indicator lamp in the sw itch goes out).
At high outside tem peratures, the system autom atically engages the recirculated air m ode and there by increases the cooling capacity performance.
Note: It is not possible to switch to recirculated air if but ton 0 or Q is depressed.
H Normal setting - Cooling
|p ^ | Econom y setting - Ventilation
3 Normal setting - Heating
Function Setting
Normal setting
The system automatically cools or heats depending on the outside tem perature and the selected interior tem perature. The air conditioning compresso r engages when outside temperatures are above 5° C (41° F).
In the cooling mode, air is directed only to the adjust
able air outle ts (6) and (8).
In the heating mode, warm air is prim arily directed to
the footwells and to the adjustable air o u tlets (8). Enough air is supplied to the windshield to keep the glass defogged in normal weather conditions. In the heating mode, air will also be periodically emitted from the adjustable air outlets (6).
At low outside tem peratures, fan operation does not start until the engine coolant has warmed up.
j ^ j EC (ECONOMY) = Econom ical setting The function of this setting correspo n ds to the Norm al
setting, however, it is not possible to air condition in this setting because the air conditioning compressor will not engage (fuel savings).
Economy setting - Heating
24
jQ M ulti-Level This setting is used if the inside of the w indshield fogs
up. As soon as the windshield is defogged, reset to 0 or O .
In the heating mode, warm air is supplied to the w ind shield, fo o t area, and to o u tlets (8). Additionally, air may be emitted periodically fro m outlets (6), depending on the interio r tem perature.
In the cooling mode, cool air is supplied to the wind shield, foot area, and outlets (6) and (8).
Note: In warm, humid climates, prolonged use of this setting
may create condensation on the outside of the wind
shield, directly above the defroste r ducts.
Defrost
The maximum amount of heated air is directed to the windshield and adjustable air outlets (8) independent of the po sitions of the temperature selector and fan control
buttons.
0 ° « The fresh air supply to the car interior is shut off. While
driving, use this settin g only temporarily.
