such quantities as torque, towing capacity and cargo room. But where
most truck-based SUVs deliver their cavernous space with cantankerous
manners, the GL-Class reveals its inherent strengths in some unexpected

GL 350 BlueTEC. Combining colossal torque with a 21- mpg
highway rating,1 the advanced clean-diesel GL 350 BlueTEC2 is
both exhilarating and efficient. It’s also quite engaging to drive,
with standard 20" twin 5 - spoke alloy wheels, 4matic™ all-wheel
drive and a paddle-shifted 7- speed automatic transmission.
GL 450. With a seamless swell of torque from its 335 - hp
gasoline V- 8, the GL 450 reaches 60 mph in just 6.9 seconds.3
Its beefy 19" 5-spoke wheels, 4matic all- wheel drive, and a
paddle - shifted 7- speed automatic transmission add up to a
commanding sense of confidence and control in any season.
GL 550. With a 382- hp V - 8, massive 21" alloy wheels and an adaptive
air suspension, the GL 550 supersizes virtually every measure of SUV
performance. But the many dimensions of its character are what set it
apart. In 6.4 seconds, it can outrun some sports cars to 60 mph,3 while
its lavish roster of standard equipment outpaces many luxury sedans.

clean -diesel BlueTEC V- 6 eagerly produce the mighty torque necessary

change gears with just a tap of your fingertips — useful on steep inclines,

Far- reaching. With a 398 - lb -ft mountain of torque, the clean- diesel
GL 350 BlueTEC climbs hills with ease. On the highway, it can travel up
to 550 miles on a single tank of fuel, including B5 Biodiesel2 — farther
than most any large SUV.1 Advanced BlueTEC technology breaks down
its nitrogen oxide emissions into harmless nitrogen and oxygen, for
certified Ultra Low Emissions, even in the strictest of the 50 states.
Formidable. Superhero - strong gasoline V-8 engines power
the GL 450 and GL 550. Each features a diecast alloy block
that’s lightweight yet supremely durable. A dual-stage intake
and continuously variable timing of all 32 valves elevate their
response, efficiency and emissions. And both output 75% of
their peak torque at just 1,000 rpm, for immediate response.
Fully engaging. Every GL- Class sends its abundant power to
all four wheels via a seamlessly smooth 7- speed automatic
transmission and 4matic™ all - wheel drive.4 An electronic gear
selector and paddle shifters let you perform all gear changes

Undaunted. The standard 4- wheel Electronic Traction System (4-ETS)
continually monitors each wheel for the first sign of slippage, and
instantly redistributes the engine’s torque to the wheels with the best
grip — even if that’s only one wheel.4 It’s part of 4matic all-wheel drive,
which also helps make handling feel more balanced on dry roads, too.
Unfazed. When stopped on a steep slope, standard Hill Start Assist
takes the drama out of getting going again. When the driver releases
the brake pedal, the system holds the brakes for a moment, allowing a
smooth takeoff without unwanted rollback. Downhill Speed Regulation
helps you maintain a steady, low- speed crawl down steep descents.
Unwavering. Precise rack-and-pinion steering features speed-sensing
power assist and our innovative Direct -steer system. By varying the
steering ratio based on how far you turn the wheel, Direct-steer helps
enhance handling stability at higher speeds, offers crisper feedback in
corners, and reduces effort in low -speed maneuvers such as parking.
Unswayed. Every GL-Class can tow up to 7,500 lbs with the optional
trailer hitch.5 No additional “heavy-duty” options are needed. Standard
Trailer Stability Assist integrates with the sensors for ESP to detect
trailer oscillation when towing. If it senses the onset of sway, it applies
the front brakes of the GL- Class to help bring it all under control.
Unruffled. A fully independent double - wishbone front/multilink rear
suspension offers the nimble response and supple ride expected of a
Mercedes-Benz. Self - leveling AIRMATIC control helps keep an even
keel as passenger and cargo loads change. At higher speeds, the air
suspension automatically lowers the ride height — and therefore the
vehicle’s center of gravity — to enhance stability and aerodynamics.
The driver can also raise the suspension at the touch of a button, for
negotiating deep snow or ruts. An Adaptive Damping System (ADS)
on the GL 550 lets the driver select Sport and Comfort modes.

Bi -Xenon headlamps. With the optional Lighting
Package,6 Bi-Xenon headlamps pierce the night with
light that’s closer in perception to natural daylight
than halogen headlamps. Active Curve Illumination
swivels the headlamp beams as you turn the steering
wheel, to improve illumination into corners up to
90% over conventional fixed lamps. The package also
includes headlamp washers that help to keep the
lamps cleaner with a high-pressure spray of fluid.
LED lighting. Brilliant white LED Daytime Running
Lamps and LED taillamps help make your presence
and your actions more immediately apparent to
other drivers on the road. For the brake lamps, the
light- emitting diodes illuminate more rapidly than
conventional bulbs — a benefit that may offer added
reaction time to a driver behind your GL- Class.
Blind Spot Assist. This optional system6 can alert
the driver to some unseen vehicles in the adjacent
lane.7 When sensors in the rear bumper detect a
vehicle to either side, a red icon illuminates in the
appropriate side mirror. If you activate your turn
signal for a lane change, a warning tone will sound.

PRE - SAFE. A Mercedes - Benz first, PRE - SAFE can
detect instability during certain vehicle maneuvers
that suggest a collision or rollover is imminent. It
can then tighten the front seat belts, close the
windows and sunroof, and — on models equipped
with the optional front - seat memory6 — adjust the
front head restraints and passenger seat, all in
an ef for t to better prepare the occupants.
Emergency -sensing. Two safety systems originally
pioneered by Mercedes-Benz help you avoid potential
collisions. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
monitors the vehicle’s response to driving inputs
such as steering and braking, and responds to help
keep it on course during evasive maneuvers.4 Brake
Assist can apply full braking pressure if it detects an
emergency braking situation — based on how quickly
the driver steps on the brake pedal — potentially
shortening your overall stopping distance.

Nine standard air bags. Within the high- strength
steel-reinforced uni-body structure of the GL- Class,
nine air bags offer 13 total ways of protection, the
most of any SUV. In addition to four side - impact
air bags, side curtain air bags are provided for all
three seating rows. A driver ’s knee air bag further
augments the dual-stage front air bags.
Advanced restraints. A 3- point seat belt and an
adjustable head restraint are provided at all seven
seating positions. Outboard seat belts in all three
rows are equipped with Emergency Tensioning
Devices (ETDs) and belt - force limiters. And in a
rear impact, NECK-PRO active front head restraints
help to prevent whiplash-type injuries.
Post- collision response. In the event that an air bag
or a seat- belt ETD deploys, the standard Mercedes Benz mbrace® system includes Automatic Collision
Notification, which initiates a call to our 24- hour
emergency response center — even if you cannot.11
In addition, the GL- Class can automatically shut off
its engine and fuel supply, turn on the hazard flashers
and some of the interior lights, par tially open the
windows to help ventilate the cabin, and unlock the
doors in an effort to assist rescuers.

Media Interface Plus. This plug - and -play multimedia upgrade to
the iPod®/MP3 Media Interface further expands your entertainment
choices. It enables Bluetooth® audio streaming, and integrates with
the car’s audio controls and in- dash display. You can also listen to the
Pandora® app that’s on your iPhone,® or watch videos from your iPod
when the vehicle is parked.14 And with your compatible mobile phone,
it offers easy phonebook transfer to the COMAND system, phone
charging via a mini- USB connection, and it can read SMS and email

Rear Seat Entertainment system. Offer front-row entertainment to
