ELECTRICALNOISE
Amajorcauseofsonarproblemsiselectrical noise. Thisusuallyappearsonthe sonar'sdisplayas random patternsof dots or lines. In severe cases, it can completelycoverthe screenwith blackdots,orcause the unitoperateerraticly, or not atall.
To eliminate or minimize the effectsofelectrical noise, firsttrytodeterminethe cause. Withthe boatat restin the water,the firstthing you shoulddois turn all electrical equipmentontheboatoff. Make certain the engine is off, also. Turn yourX-25on, thenturnoffASP(Advanced Signal Processing). Thereshouldbe a steady bottomsignal on the display. Nowturn on each piece of electrical
equipmentontheboatandviewtheeffectonthe sonar's Forexample, display.
turnonthebilgepumpandviewthesonardisplayfornoise. Ifnonoise ispresent, turnthe pumpoff, thenturnonthe VHFradio andtransmit. Keepdoingthis until
all electrical equipmenthas beenturnedon, their effecton the sonar display noted, thenturned off.
Ifyoufindnoiseinterferencefromanelectrical instrument,trollingmotor, pump, or radio, tryto isolate the problem. You can usually re-routethesonar unit's power cable and transducercable awayfrom the wiringthat is causing the interference. VHFradioantennacablesradiate noise when transmitting,
certain tokeepthe sonar'swires awayfromit. Youmayneedto route the sonar

|
If no noise displays on the sonar unit from electrical equipment, then make |
|||
certain everythingexcept the sonarunit is turned off, then start the engine. |
Increase the RPMwiththegearshift in neutral. Ifnoise appears onthe display, the problemcouldbe oneofthreethings;sparkplugs, alternator, ortachometer
wiring. Try using resistorsparkplugs, alternatorflIters, orroutingthesonarunit's powercableawayfromengine wiring. Again, routingthe powercabledirectlyto
the batteryhelpseliminatenoise problems. Makecertain touse thein-line fuse supplied with the unitwhen wiringthe powercableto the battery.
Whenno noiseappearsonthe sonarunitafterall ofthe above tests, thenthe noise source is probably cavitation, Many novices or persons with limited experiencemake hasty sonarinstallations which functionperfectlyin shallow water,orwhentheboatisatrest. Innearly allcases, thecause ofthe malfunction will be the location and/orangleofthe transducer. Theface ofthetransducer mustbe placedin alocationthat has asmoothflow ofwaterat allboat speeds. Read yourtransducerowners manualforthe best mounting position.
