Review of Consumer Recycling Options in India for Logitech End-of-Life Devices and Batteries

Date of Review: September 2018

SCOPE OF WORK

Logitech requested consulting support to identify local recycling options for members of the public in India and answer the following specific questions were asked by Logitech:

Is any local infrastructure for end-of-life devices and battery recycling currently available?

Where can members of the public find information on the internet or by email?

Is there a map of legally-compliant drop-off locations for end-of-life devices and batteries? Or a website that provides information on legally-compliant recyclers and drop off locations?

Do retailers accept end-of-life devices and batteries, when selling new products? Like they do in Europe?

Notes:

“End-of-Life devices” = Logitech computer peripherals, which have reached end-of-life e.g. mice, keyboards, music speakers "Batteries" = Logitech batteries i.e. commonly used consumer batteries e.g. AA batteries, coin cell batteries

INFORMATION GATHERED

The following information was provided by Consultants following a review of information readily-available in the public domain collected through a review of various websites, telephonic interviews with officers of various waste recycling and collection companies and interviews with regulators. The information shared in this report is not confidential and is available in the public domain. It can, therefore, be shared publicly by Logitech.

Website showing drop-off locations: Consultant review of available information indicates there is no national/regional interactive map available online for consumers to check and find their local drop off points. Lists and contact details for some recycling companies are available online for some locations. In most cases, members of the public would need to contact their local recycler (by phone) to get advice and guidance on drop off locations as this information is not specified online.

Retailer return option: No concrete information is available online to determine if end-of-life devices can be returned to retailers. In Consultant's experience, some retailers of consumer durables such as refrigerators, washing machines, TVs do accept old items and offer a small discount on the cost of the new one purchased. This is usually seen during festive-season sales/ other specific sales drives.

Recyclers with Permits:

The remainder of this report focuses on available information on end-of-life device drop-off and collection services in Kolkata, and other areas of India. The following table lists major e-waste recyclers operating presently in Kolkata and wider India, along with the drop off locations each entity provides for consumers, and evidence of legally-required certificates and authorisations.
