Introduction
This installation note explains how to install Option RTS, rear panel Streaming output on
instruments that already have the following options installed:
— Option B2X or B5X (255 MHz or 510 MHz Analysis BW)
— Option RT2 or RT1, Real Time Signal Analyzer.
The option is licensed for one instrument model number/serial number combination. The license
file that is downloaded from the web will only install on the designated instrument.
This upgrade requires instrument software version A.17.04 or later
To verify the current version, press

Initial Instrument Functionality Check
Power on the instrument and allow the instrument to boot up, run the alignments and display the
measurement screen. The instrument will probably display a spectrum analyzer screen and you will
see the instrument sweeping.
There should be no alignment failures. If there are failures, investigate and fix the problem before
continuing.
Instrument Software Installation
This upgrade requires instrument software version A.17.04 or later.
To verify the current version, press System, Show System and look for the "Instrument S/W
Revision".
Also look at the options section and assure N9040B-RT1 or RT2 is present, and also that
N9040B-B2X or B5X is present.
The latest revision of the X-Series Signal Analyzers software may be downloaded from:

Hardware Installation
1. Power down the instrument, wait till the standby light comes on, and remove the power cord.
2. Remove the instrument side strap handles, bottom and rear feet, outer case, and top brace.
3. Remove the eight screws holding each side of the front frame to the instrument chassis. A
T-20 and a T-10 Torx driver are required. Save screws for reuse. The front frame is being
loosened so the right side chassis can be removed in the next step.
4. Remove the right side chassis (RF Side Bracket) by removing all screws (see the UXA Service
Guide, Assembly Replacement section, A28 Wideband Extension Board Option RTS). On some
instruments there may be a small bracket that connects the right side chassis to the top brace.
Remove this bracket if present.
Very carefully pull the front frame forward a few millimeters (the external mixing cable and
ribbon cable are still attached!) so the pem in the right side chassis will clear the cutout in the
front frame casting. Pull the right side chassis up and out of the instrument.
5. This procedure assumes the Wideband IF boards (Option B2X or Option B5X) are already
installed in the instrument.

Assemble the WBDIF Extension board, Bracket, and Flex Circuit
1. Locate the WBDIF Extension board and the bracket in the kit. Attach the WBDIF Extension
board to the bracket with four screws from the kit. See Figure 1. Torque to 9 inch-pounds.
Figure 1 WBDIF Extension Board Bracket
2. Locate the gasket in the kit. Notice the gasket has a small square hole and needs to be aligned
with the square hole on the WBDIF Extension Board casting. There is an LED in the casting, and
the small square hole allows the LED to be visible from the rear panel.
The gasket is fragile. Carefully peel off the backing from the gasket and apply the sticky side of
the gasket over the two WBDIF Extension board connectors.
3. If the instrument has Option B2X, locate the N9040-60047 Flex cable in the kit. Attach the end
of the flex cable that has the alignment pins to the WBDIF Extension board J1.
4. If the instrument has Option B5X, locate both flex cables in the kit. Attach flex cable
N9040-60047 to the WBDIF Extension board J1. Attach flex cable N9040-60048 to the WBDIF
Extension board J2.

6. Figure 3 shows the WBDIF Extension assembly installed in the instrument that has Option B5X.
Notice the gray flexible cables are routed along the instrument chassis.
7. Remove the gray label that covers the rear panel Wideband Digital Bus connectors.
8. Install the WBDIF Extension assembly as shown in Figure 3. Locate three screws in the kit and
secure the WBDIF Extension assembly to the rear panel. The screws are installed above and
below the I and Q connectors. Install another screw into the pem that lays in the side frame
cutout. Figure 3 shows this pem without a screw installed. Torque the three screws to
9inch-pounds.
9. Connect the Flex circuit cables to the Wideband Digital boards in the card cage as shown in
Figure 3. If the UXA has only the top WB DIF board, connect the flex circuit cable from the
WBDIF Extension J1 to the connector on the WB Digital IF assembly.
10. If the UXA has two WB Digital IF boards, connect the flex circuit previously attached to the
WBDIF Extension assembly J2 (J2 is connector is on the edge of the WBDIF Extension), to the
bottom WB Digital IF board in the card cage. Connect the other flex circuit from the WB Digital
IF Extension J1 to the top WB Digital IF board in the card cage.
Complete Hardware Installation
1. Locate the replacement RF side bracket in the kit and install this onto the instrument. Use the
screws in the kit to secure the RF side bracket to the pems on the WBDIF Extension bracket.
2. Secure the front frame to the instrument using the screws previously removed.
3. Replace the top brace. When installing the top brace assure cables do not get smashed under
the top brace. Torque to 9 inch-pounds. Replace the small bracket if previously removed.
4. Plug in the instrument and allow to boot up. The power on check will assure the instrument
can find the WBDIF Extension assembly.
5. Power down the instrument. Once the instrument is completely shut down, remove the power
cord.
6. Replace the instrument cover, feet, and side handles.

attached License File.
4. Locate a USB storage device. Perform a virus scan on this device before use.
5. Save the License File to the root directory of the USB storage device.
6. Connect the USB storage device to the signal analyzer USB port. Windows will detect the new
hardware and may display the configuration menu shown in Figure 4. This menu may be
configured according to your preferences.
