Theintendeduseforthemanual(mechanical)wheelchairisto providemobilitytopersonswhomayberestrictedtoasitting position.Themanualwheelchairisintendedforongoingdailyuse. Themodelsofferawiderangeofcustomizationwhichallowsfora betterfitfortheenduserresultingincomfort,lightweight,easier propelling,transferring,andsmoothride.Themanualwheelchairis intendedforindoorandoutdooruseonfirmsurfacesfreeofclimbing obstacles.Allotherusesareprohibited.

2.2Safety/HandlingofWheelchairs
“SafetyandHandling”ofthewheelchairrequiresthecloseattention ofthewheelchairuseraswellastheassistant.Thismanualpoints outthemostcommonproceduresandtechniquesinvolvedinthe safeoperationandmaintenanceofthewheelchair.Itisimportantto practiceandmasterthesesafetechniquesuntilyouarecomfortable inmaneuveringaroundthefrequentlyencounteredarchitectural barriers.
Usethisinformationonlyasa“basic”guide.Thetechniquesthatare discussedonthefollowingpageshavebeenusedsuccessfullybymany.
Individualwheelchairusersoftendevelopskillstodealwithdaily livingactivitiesthatmaydifferfromthosedescribedinthismanual. Virtuallyallactivitieswhichinvolvemovementinthewheelchairhave aneffectonthecenterofgravity.Invacarerecommendsusingseat positioningstrapsforadditionalsafetywhileinvolvedinactivities thatshiftyourweight.
DONOTleanforwardoutofthewheelchairanyfurtherthan stabilitywillallow.Makesurecastersarepointingintheforward positionwheneveryouleanforward.Thiscanbeachievedby advancingthewheelchairandthenreversingitinastraightline.

Reaching,Leaning,orBendingForward
Positionthefrontcasterssothattheyareextendedasfarforwardas possibleandengagewheellocks.
Reaching,Leaning,orBendingBackwards
Positionwheelchairascloseaspossibletothedesiredobject.Point frontcastersforwardtocreatethelongestpossiblewheelbase. Reachbackonlyasfarasyourarmwillextendwithoutchanging yoursittingposition.
2.5CopingwithEverydayObstacles
Copingwiththeirritationofeverydayobstaclescanbealleviated somewhatbylearninghowtomanageyourwheelchair.Keepinmind yourcenterofgravitytomaintainstabilityandbalance.

2.6ANotetoWheelchairAssistants
Whenassistancetothewheelchairuserisrequired,rememberto usegoodbodymechanics.Keepyourbackstraightandbendyour kneeswhenevertiltingthewheelchairortraversingcurbs,orother impediments.

–Donotattempttoliftawheelchairbyliftingonany
removable(detachable)parts.Liftingbymeansof anyremovable(detachable)partsofawheelchair mayresultininjurytotheuserordamagetothe wheelchair.
Also,beawareofanyremovable(detachable)parts.TheseMUST NEVERbeusedtomovethewheelchairorasliftingsupports,as theymaybeinadvertentlyreleased,resultinginpossibleinjurytothe userand/orassistant(s).
Whenlearninganewassistancetechnique,haveanexperienced assistanthelpyoubeforeattemptingitalone.
2.7Tipping
WARNING!
DONOTtipthewheelchairwithoutassistance.Whenloweringthefrontcastersofthewheelchair,
DONOTletthewheelchairdropthelastfewinches totheground.Thiscouldresultininjurytothe occupant.
Aftermasteringthetechniquesoftippingthewheelchair,useoneof thefollowingmethodstotacklecurbs,shortstairs,etc.
2.7.1Method1—WheelchairWithStepTubes
Placefootonthesteptubeandbegintotiltthewheelchairtoward you.Applyacontinuousdownwardmotionuntilthebalancepoint isachievedandthefrontcastersclearthecurb.Atthispoint,the assistantwillfeeladifferenceintheweightdistribution.
Rollthewheelchairforwardandslowlylowerthefrontofthe wheelchairinonecontinuousmovementontothesidewalk.Pushthe wheelchairforwarduntiltherearwheelsrollupandoverthecurb.
2.7.2Method2—WheelchairWithoutStepTubes
Thismethodrequirestwoassistants.Thesecondassistantshould bepositionedatthefrontofthewheelchairliftingupwardon anon-removable(non-detachable)partofthewheelchairframe whenliftingthewheelchairandstabilizingthewheelchairwhenthe wheelchairisbeingloweredtotheground.
Thefirstassistantshouldstandonthesidewalkandturnthe wheelchairsothattherearwheelsareagainstthecurb.Turnthe anti-tipperssotheanti-tipwheelsarepointingup.Thewheelchair shouldbetiltedbacktothebalancepointand,inonecontinuous upwardmovement,therearwheelsshouldbepulledupandoverthe curb.DONOTreturnthefrontcasterstothegrounduntilthe

wheelchairhasbeenpulledbackwardfarenoughforthefrontcasters tocleartheedgeofthecurb.
Rollthewheelchairbackwardandslowlylowerthewheelchairinone continuousmovement.Turntheanti-tipperssotheanti-tipwheels arefacingdown.
2.8Stairways
WARNING!
–Extremecautionisadvisedwhenitisnecessaryto
moveanoccupiedorunoccupiedwheelchairup ordownthestairs.Invacarerecommendsthat,if possible,theuserberemovedfromthewheelchair priortomoving.Invacarerecommendsusingtwo assistantsandmakingthoroughpreparations.Make suretouseonlysecure,non-detachablepartsfor hand-heldsupports.

theuprightpositionbeforeliftingthewheelchair.
Followthisprocedureformovingthewheelchairbetweenfloors whenanelevatorisnotavailable:
MovingUpStairs
1.Ifnecessary,rotatetheanti-tipperssothewheelsarefacingup.
2.Oneassistant(positionedbehindthewheelchair),securelygrasps anon-removable(non-detachable)partofthewheelchairfor leverageandtiltsthewheelchairbacktothebalancepoint.
3.Afterthewheelchairhasbeentiltedbacktothebalancepoint, theassistantbehindthewheelchairbacksthewheelchairup againstthefirststep.
