WHEELCHAIR USER
As a manufacturer of wheelchairs, Invacare endeavors to supply a wide variety
of wheelchairs to meet many needs of the user. However, final selection of the
type of wheelchair to be used by an individual rests solely with the user and his/
her healthcare professional capable of making such a selection.
WHEELCHAIR TIE-DOWN RESTRAINTS AND SEAT POSITIONING
STRAPS
Invacare recommends that wheelchair users NOT be transported in vehicles of
any kind while in wheelchairs. As of this date, the Department of Transportation
has not approved any tie-down systems for transportation of a user while in a
wheelchair, in a moving vehicle of any type.
SPECIAL NOTES
SPECIAL NOTES
It is Invacares position that users of wheelchairs should be transferred into
appropriate seating in vehicles for transportation and use be made of the
restraints made available by the auto industry. Invacare cannot and does not
recommend any wheelchair transportation systems.
AS REGARDS RESTRAINTS - SEAT POSITIONING STRAPS - IT IS THE
OBLIGATION OF THE DME DEALER, THERAPISTS AND OTHER
HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS TO DETERMINE IF A SEATING POSITIONING STRAP IS REQUIRED TO ENSURE THE SAFE OPERATION OF
THIS EQUIPMENT BY THE USER. SERIOUS INJURY CAN OCCUR IN THE
EVENT OF A FALL FROM A WHEELCHAIR.
WARNING
The drive behavior initially experienced by the user may be different from
other chairs previously used. This Power Wheelchair has Invacares SureStep
technology, a feature that provides the chair with optimum traction and
stability when driving forward over transitions and thresholds of up to
2-inches. The following warnings apply specifically to the SureStep Feature:
Do not use on inclines greater than 9°.
Do not use on inclines with wet slippery or oily surfaces. This may in-
clude certain painted or otherwise treated wood surfaces.
Do not traverse down ramps at high speed. Doing so will reduce traction
and increase stopping distance.
The end users weight can materially affect traction on sloped surfaces.
Great care should be taken when traversing such slopes.
To determine and establish your particular safety limits, practice use of this
product on various sloping surfaces in the presence of a qualified healthcare
provider BEFORE attempting active use of this wheelchair. Other general
warnings listed within this document also apply.

GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS
WARNING
DO NOT, under any circumstances, cut or remove the round grounding
prong from any plug used with or for Invacare products. Some devices are
equipped with three-prong (grounding) plugs for protection against possible
shock hazards and fire. Where a two-prong wall receptacle is encountered, it
is the personal responsibility and obligation of the customer to contact a
qualified electrician and have the two-prong receptacle replaced with a
properly grounded three-prong wall receptacle in accordance with the
National Electrical Code. If you must use an extension cord, use ONLY a

RAIN TEST
WARNING
INVACARE has tested its power wheelchairs in accordance with ISO 7176
Part 9 Rain Test. This provides the end user or his/her assistant sufficient
time to remove his/her power wheelchair from a rain storm and retain wheel-
chair operation.
DO NOT leave power wheelchair in a rain storm of any kind.
DO NOT use power wheelchair in a shower.
DO NOT store power wheelchair in a damp area for an extended period of time.
GENERAL GUIDELINES
DO NOT leave power wheelchair in a damp area for any length of time.
Direct exposure to rain or dampness will cause the chair to malfunction
electrically and mechanically; may cause the chair to prematurely rust or may
damage the upholstery.
Check to ensure that the red and black battery terminal caps are secured in
place, joystick boot is NOT torn or cracked where water can enter and that
all electrical connections are secure at all times.
DO NOT use the joystick if the boot is torn or cracked. If the joystick boot
becomes torn or cracked, replace IMMEDIATELY.
ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE (EMI)
CAUTION: IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU READ THIS INFORMATION REGARDING THE POSSIBLE EFFECTS OF ELECTROMAGNETIC
INTERFERENCE ON YOUR POWERED WHEELCHAIR.
ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE (EMI) FROM RADIO WAVE
SOURCES
Powered wheelchairs and motorized scooters (in this text, both will be referred to as powered wheelchairs) may be susceptible to electromagnetic
interference (EMI), which is interfering electromagnetic energy (EM) emitted
from sources such as radio stations, TV stations, amateur radio (HAM) transmitters, two way radios, and cellular phones. The interference (from radio
wave sources) can cause the powered wheelchair to release its brakes, move
by itself, or move in unintended directions. It can also permanently damage
the powered wheelchair's control system. The intensity of the interfering EM
energy can be measured in volts per meter (V/m). Each powered wheelchair
can resist EMI up to a certain intensity. This is called its "immunity level." The
higher the immunity level, the greater the protection. At this time, current
technology is capable of achieving at least a 20 V/m immunity level, which
should provide useful protection from the more common sources of radiated
EMI.
GENERAL WARNINGS
There are a number of sources of relatively intense electromagnetic fields in
the everyday environment. Some of these sources are obvious and easy to
avoid. Others are not apparent and exposure is unavoidable. However, we
believe that by following the warnings listed, your risk to EMI will be minimized.
Pronto® M71 Jr.12Part No. 1122147
with SureStep
GENERAL GUIDELINES
SECTION 1
GENERAL WARNINGS (CONTINUED)
The sources of radiated EMI can be broadly classified into three types:
1)Hand-held Portable transceivers (transmitters-receivers with the
antenna mounted directly on the transmitting unit. Examples include:
citizens band [CB] radios, "walkie talkie," security, fire and police
transceivers, cellular telephones, and other personal communication
devices);
NOTE: Some cellular telephones and similar devices transmit signals while they are ON, even
when not being used.
2)Medium-range mobile transceivers, such as those used in police cars, fire
trucks, ambulances, and taxis. These usually have the antenna mounted
on the outside of the vehicle; and
3)Long-range transmitters and transceivers, such as commercial broadcast
transmitters (radio and TV broadcast antenna towers) and amateur
(HAM) radios.
NOTE: Other types of hand-held devices, such as cordless phones, laptop computers, AM/FM
radios, TV sets, CD players, cassette players, and small appliances, such as electric shavers and
hair dryers, so far as we know, are not likely to cause EMI problems to your powered wheel
chair.
Because EM energy rapidly becomes more intense as one moves closer to the
transmitting antenna (source), the EM fields from hand-held radio wave
sources (transceivers) are of special concern. It is possible to unintentionally
bring high levels of EM energy very close to the powered wheelchair's control
system while using these devices. This can affect powered wheelchair
movement and braking. Therefore, the warnings listed are recommended to
prevent possible interference with the control system of the powered wheelchair.
Electromagnetic interference (EMI) from sources such as radio and TV
stations, amateur radio (HAM) transmitters, two-way radios, and cellular
phones can affect powered wheelchairs and motorized scooters. Following
the warnings listed below should reduce the chance of unintended brake
release or powered wheelchair movement which could result in serious injury.
1) Do not operate hand-held transceivers (transmitters receivers), such as
citizens band (CB) radios, or turn ON personal communication devices,
such as cellular phones, while the powered wheelchair is turned ON;
2) Be aware of nearby transmitters, such as radio or TV stations, and try to
avoid coming close to them;
3) If unintended movement or brake release occurs, turn the powered
wheelchair OFF as soon as it is safe;

SAFETY/HANDLING OF WHEELCHAIRS
Safety and Handling of the wheelchair requires the close attention of the wheelchair user as
well as the assistant. This manual points out the most common procedures and techniques
involved in the safe operation and maintenance of the wheelchair. It is important to practice
and master these safe techniques until you are comfortable in maneuvering around the
frequently encountered architectural barriers.

level against EMI (as of May 1994) (the higher the level, the greater the
protection);
and is immune to signal levels up to 20 V/m, the maximum immunity level
of the product is unknown.
Use this information only as a basic guide. The techniques that are discussed on the following pages have been used successfully by many users.
Individual wheelchair users often develop skills to deal with daily living activities that may
differ from those described in this manual. Invacare recognizes and encourages each individual to try what works best for him/her in overcoming architectural obstacles that they
may encounter, however, ALL WARNINGS and CAUTIONS given in this manual MUST be
followed. Techniques in this manual are a starting point for the new wheelchair user and
assistant with safety as the most important consideration for all.
STABILITY AND BALANCE
WARNING
ALWAYS wear your seat positioning strap.
o
DO NOT climb, go up or down ramps or traverse slopes greater than 9
Invacare strongly recommends proceeding down ramps or slopes at half
speed or slower and to avoid hard braking or sudden stops.
DO NOT leave elevating legrests in the fully extended position when
proceeding down ramps or slopes.
To assure stability and proper operation of your wheelchair, you must at all times maintain
proper balance. Your wheelchair has been designed to remain upright and stable during
normal daily activities as long as you do not move beyond the center of gravity. DO NOT
lean forward out of the wheelchair any further than the length of the armrests.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
COPING WITH EVERYDAY OBSTACLES
SECTION 1
Coping with the irritation of everyday obstacles can be alleviated somewhat by learning how
to manage your wheelchair. Keep in mind your center of gravity to maintain stability and
balance.
While the walking beam allows you to
traverse up to a 2-inch bump or threshold, stopping after the wheels cross the
bump poses a problem. The chair cannot
reverse over the bump at this point.
Continue forward and then turn around.
While the Pronto M71 Jr wheelchair is
designed for use primarily in and around
the home, the provider should determine whether the chair is suitable for the actual environment that the chair will be used.
Do not go down ramp at full speed. Some seat/back positions will cause wheelchair to feel
unstable.
CAUTION
Be aware of condition of ramp. Traction will be diminished/non-existent on a
slippery surface. Proceed with caution.
A NOTE TO WHEELCHAIR ASSISTANTS
GENERAL GUIDELINES
When assistance to the wheelchair user is required, remember to use good body mechanics.
Keep your back straight and bend your knees whenever tilting wheelchair or traversing
curbs, or other impediments.
Also, be aware of detachable parts such as arms or the footboard. These must NEVER be
used for hand-hold or lifting supports, as they may be inadvertently released, resulting in
possible injury to the user and/or assistant(s).
When learning a new assistance technique, have an experienced assistant help you before
attempting it alone.
STAIRWAYS
WARNINGS
DO NOT attempt to move an occupied power wheelchair between floors
using a stairway. Use an elevator to move an occupied power wheelchair
between floors. If moving a power wheelchair between floors by means of a
stairway, the occupant MUST be removed and transported independently of
the power wheelchair.
Extreme caution is advised when it is necessary to move an UNOCCUPIED
power wheelchair up or down the stairs. Invacare recommends using two (2)
assistants and making thorough preparations. Disassemble wheelchair. Refer
to TRANSPORTING in this manual.
Make sure to use ONLY secure, non-detachable parts for hand-hold supports.
DO NOT attempt to lift the wheelchair by any removable (detachable) parts.
Lifting by means of any removable (detachable) parts of a wheelchair may
result in injury to the user or damage to the wheelchair.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
PERCENTAGE OF WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION
SECTION 1
WARNING
DO NOT attempt to reach objects if you have to move forward in the seat or
pick them up from the floor by reaching down between your knees.
Many activities require the wheelchair user to reach, bend and transfer in and
out of the wheelchair. These movements will cause a change to normal
balance, center of gravity, and weight distribution of the wheelchair. To
determine and establish your particular safety limits, practice bending,
reaching and transferring activities in several combinations in the presence of
a qualified healthcare professional BEFORE attempting active use of the
wheelchair.
Proper positioning is essential for your safety. When reaching, leaning, bending or bending forward, it is important to use the casters as a tool to maintain
stability and balance.
The M71 Jr. has a weight limitation of 150 lbs.

BATTERY GAUGE DISPLAY
(BGD) - Located at the rear of the
joystick housing, it provides information
on the remaining charge in the batteries.
At full charge all six (6) segments of the
bar graph are lighted; as the battery
becomes discharged the farthest right
segment will go out until only the red
bar is lighted; at this level the last red bar will start to flash on and off to indicate that the user
should charge the batteries as soon as possible.

The BGD also serves as a system diagnostic device when a fault is detected by the control
module. A specific number of flashes of the last two red bars (up to eight (8) flashes) will
start to flash on and off to indicate the type of fault detected separated by a pause. A chart of
the diagnostic indications is given in the DIAGNOSTIC CODE Section of the Electronics
Manual, part number 1114808.
