1.1 Accessing the CLI

When accessing the management interface for the switch over a direct connection to the server’s console port, or via a Telnet connection, the s witch can b e managed by entering command keywords and p arameters at the prompt. Using the switch's command-line interface (CLI) is very similar to entering commands on a UNIX system.

This chapter describes how to use the Command Line Interface (CLI).

1.2 Command Line Modes

The CLI groups all the commands in appropriate modes according to the nature of the command. A sample of the CLI command modes are described below. Each of the command modes supports specific software commands.

The CLI Command Modes table captures the command modes, the prompts visible in that mode and the exit method from that mode.

 User Mode

When the operator logs into the CLI, the User Mode is the initial mode. The User Mode contains a limited set of commands. The command prompt shown at this level is:

 Privileged Mode

To have access to the full suite of commands, the operator must enter the Privileged Mode. The Privileged Mode requires password authentication. From Privileged Mode, the operator can issue a ny Execcommand to enter th e Global Configuration mode. The command prompt shown at this level is:

 Global Config Mode

This mode permits the operat or to make modificati ons to therunning configuration. General setup commands are gr ouped in this mod e. F rom the Glob al Configuration mode, the op erator can enter the terfaceIn Confi guration mode. T he c ommand prompt at this level is:

From the Global Config mode, the operator may enter the following configuration modes:

 Interface Config Mode

Many features are enabled for a particular interface. The Interface commands enable or modify the operation of an interface. In this mode, a physical port is set up for a specific logical connection operation. The command prompt at this level is:

Command Prompt: Switch(Interface <port#>)#

1.3 Requirements

 Workstations running Windows XP/Vista/7/8/, Windows 2003/2008, MACOS X or l ater, Linux, UNIX, or oth er platforms are compatible with TCP/IP protocols.

Workstations are installed with Ethernet NIC (Network Interface Card)

Serial Port Connection (Terminal)

The above Workstations come with COM Port (DB9) or USB-to-RS-232 converter.

The above Workstations have been installed with terminal emulator, such as Hyper Terminal included in Windows XP/2003.

Serial cable -- one end is attached to the RS-232 serial port, wh ile the other end to the console port of the Managed Switch.

Ethernet Port Connection

Network cables -- Use standard network (UTP) cables with RJ-45 connectors.

The above PC is installed with Web Browser and JAVA runtime environment plug-in.

2.1 Terminal Setup

To configure th e system, connect a ser ial cable to aCOM port on a PC or note book computerand to RJ-45 t ype of serial (console) port of the Managed Switch.

A terminal pr ogram is re quired to make the software connection to th e Managed Switch. Windows'Hyper Terminal program may be a good choice. The Hyper Terminal can be accessed from the Start menu.

1.Click START, then Programs, Accessories and then Hyper Terminal.

2.2 Logon to the Console

Once the terminal is con nected to the devi ce, power on theManaged Switch, and the terminal will display “running testing procedures”. T hen, the fo llowing m essage asks to loginerusname and p assword. T he factory default us er na me an d password are shown as follows and the login screen in Figure 3-1 appears.

To check the current IP address or modify a new IP address for the Switch, please use the procedures as follows:

Show the current IP Address

1.At “#”theprompt, enter “show ip interface brief”.

2.The screen displays the current IP address and Subnet Mask as shown in Figure 3-2.

3. At the “#” prompt, enter the following command and press <Enter>. As shown in Figure 3-3.

# configure terminal (config)# interface vlan 1

(config-if-vlan)# ip address 192.168.1.100 255.255.255.0

The previous command would apply the following settings for the Managed Switch.

IP Address: 192.168.1.100

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

4.Repeat step 1 to check if the IP address is changed.

Store current switch configuration

5.At the “#” prompt, enter the following command and press <Enter>.

#copy running-config startup-config

If the IP is successfully configured, the Managed Switch will apply the new IP address setting immediately. You can access the Web interface of the Managed Switch through the new IP address.

If you are not familiar with the console command or the related parameter, enter “ ?” anytime in console to get the help description.

The Managed Switch also supports telnet for remote man agement. The switch asks for user name and password for remote login when using telnet, please use “admin” for username & password.
