Processor

CAUTION

Failure to use an appropriate power supply and/or not connecting the 12 V (2 x 2 pin) power connector to the Desktop Board may result in damage to the board, or the system may not function properly.

Intel Desktop Board DQ57TM supports the Intel Core i7, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i3, Intel Pentium, and Intel Xeon 3400-series processors in the LGA1156 package. Processors are not included with the Desktop Board and must be purchased separately. The processor connects to the Desktop Board through an LGA1156 socket.

Desktop Board Features

Intel® Q57 Express Chipset

The Intel Q57 Express Chipset, consisting of the Intel Q57 Platform Controller Hub (PCH), provides interfaces to the processor and the USB, SATA, LPC, audio, network, display, PCI, and PCI Express x1 interfaces. The PCH is a centralized controller for the board’s I/O paths.

Main Memory

NOTE

To be fully compliant with all applicable Intel® SDRAM memory specifications, the board should be populated with DIMMs that support the Serial Presence Detect (SPD) data structure. If your memory modules do not support SPD, you will see a notification to this effect on the screen at power up. The BIOS will attempt to configure the memory controller for normal operation.

The board has four DIMM sockets and supports the following memory features:

Two independent memory channels with interleaved mode support

Support for non-ECC, unbuffered, single-sided or double-sided DIMMs with x8 organization

Support for ECC unbuffered memory when used with an Intel Xeon 3400-series processor

16 GB maximum total system memory (with 2 Gb memory technology)

Minimum total system memory: 1 GB using 1 Gb x8 modules

Serial Presence Detect

DDR3 1333 MHz and DDR3 1066 MHz SDRAM DIMMs

NOTE

32-bit operating systems are limited to a maximum of 4 GB of memory. These operating systems will report less than 4 GB because of the memory used by add-in graphics cards and other system resources.

NOTE

When using a processor without Intel® Graphics Technology, memory must be installed in either or both of the DIMM 0 (blue) memory sockets for the system to boot.

Graphics Subsystem

The board supports either integrated graphics (Intel Graphics Technology) or PCI Express 2.0 x16 graphics.

Integrated Graphics

The board supports integrated graphics through the Intel® Flexible Display Interface (Intel® FDI) for processors with Intel Graphics Technology.

If using a processor with integrated graphics, the board will support only two of the three integrated graphics interfaces simultaneously: DisplayPort, DVI-I, DVI-D. Also, during the Power-On Self-Test (POST), the board will not output to the DisplayPort if DVI-I or DVI-D is used concurrently with DisplayPort.

DisplayPort*

DisplayPort is a digital communication interface that utilizes differential signaling to achieve a high bandwidth bus interface designed to support connections between PCs and monitors, projectors, and TV displays. DisplayPort is suitable for display connections between consumer electronics devices such as high definition optical disc players, set top boxes, and TV displays. DisplayPort output can be converted to HighDefinition Multimedia Interface* (HDMI*) output using a DisplayPort-HDMI converter.

DisplayPort’s maximum supported display resolution is 2560 x 1600 at a 60 Hz refresh rate with a 16:10 aspect ratio (WQXGA). DisplayPort 1.1 adds support for High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) version 1.3 which enables viewing of protected content from Blu-ray Disc* and HD-DVD optical media over DisplayPort 1.1 connections.

Digital Visual Interface

Intel Desktop Board DQ57TM supports Digital Visual Interface (DVI) displays with two back panel ports: a DVI-D port and a DVI-I port.

The DVI-I port supports both digital and analog DVI displays. The maximum supported resolution is 2048 x 1536 at a 75 Hz refresh rate (QXGA). The DVI-I port is compliant with the DVI 1.0 specification. DVI analog output from the DVI-I port can be converted to VGA for viewing on a VGA display using a DVI-VGA converter.

The DVI-D port supports only digital DVI displays. The maximum supported resolution is 2048 x 1536 at a 75 Hz refresh rate (QXGA). The DVI-D port is compliant with the DVI 1.0 specification.

PCI Express* x16 Graphics

The Intel Core i7, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i3, and Intel Pentium processors in an LGA1156 socket support discrete add-in graphics cards via the PCI Express 2.0 x16 add-in card connector. The board supports the following PCI Express speeds:

PCI Express 2 frequency of 2.5 GHz which results in 5.0 Gb/s in each direction (500 MB/s) per lane. The maximum theoretical bandwidth on the interface is 8 GB/s in each direction, simultaneously, when operating in x16 mode.

PCI Express 1 frequency of 1.25 GHz resulting in 2.5 Gb/s each direction (250 MB/s) per lane. The maximum theoretical bandwidth on the interface is 4 GB/s in each direction, simultaneously, when operating in x16 mode.

Audio Subsystem

The board supports Intel High Definition Audio through a Realtek ALC662-VC audio codec as well as through the HDMI interface.

The Realtek ALC662-VC-based audio subsystem provides the following features:

6-channel (5.1) audio with independent multi-streaming stereo

Advanced jack sense for the back panel audio connectors that enables the audio codec to recognize the device that is connected to an audio port. The back panel audio connectors are capable of retasking according to the user’s definition, or can be automatically switched depending on the recognized device type.

Stereo input and output via back panel connectors

Headphone and Mic in functions for front panel audio connectors

A signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of 90 dB

The board provides onboard audio headers and back panel connectors. The onboard audio headers include the following:

Front panel audio (a 2 x 5 pin header that provides headphone and mic in signals for front panel audio connectors)

S/PDIF audio header (1 x 4 pin header)

Internal mono speaker header (1 x 2 pin header)

Front panel headphone output is supported by a separate audio channel pair, allowing multi-streaming audio configurations such as simultaneous 6-channel (5.1) surround sound playback and stereo audio conferencing (through speakers connected to the back panel audio connectors and a headset connected to front panel audio connectors).

The onboard internal mono speaker header allows connection to an internal, lowpower speaker for basic system sound capability. The subsystem is capable of driving a speaker load of 8 Ω at 1 W (rms) or 4 Ω at 1.5 W (rms).

The onboard S/PDIF header allows connection to coaxial or optical adapters for digital audio output.

USB 2.0 Support

The board supports up to 14 USB 2.0 ports provided by two EHCI host controllers in the PCH that allow the use of EHCI-compatible drivers.

The port arrangement is as follows:

Eight front panel ports (four dual-port internal headers)

USB 2.0 support requires both an operating system and drivers that fully support USB 2.0 transfer rates.

SATA Support

The board provides six SATA connectors through the PCH, which support one device per connector:

One eSATA connector on the back panel for external connections

The PCH provides independent SATA ports with a theoretical maximum transfer rate of 3 Gb/s per port. A point-to-point interface is used for computer to storage device connections.

SATA RAID

The Intel Q57 PCH supports Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) which enables the following RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Drives) levels:

RAID 0 - data striping

RAID 1 - data mirroring

RAID 0+1 (or RAID 10) - data striping and mirroring

RAID 5 - distributed parity

Intel® Rapid Recover Technology (Intel® RRT)

The board incorporates Intel® Rapid Recover Technology (Intel® RRT). Intel RRT is a feature of Intel RST. Intel RRT uses RAID 1 (mirroring) functionality to copy data from a designated master drive to a designated recovery drive. The master drive data can be copied to the recovery drive either continuously or on request.

When using the continuous update policy, changes made to the data on the master drive while the recovery drive is disconnected or offline are automatically copied to the recovery drive when it is reconnected. When using the on request update policy, the master drive data can be restored to a previous state by copying the data on the recovery drive back to the master drive.

BIOS

The BIOS provides the Power-On Self-Test (POST), the BIOS Setup program, and the PCI/PCI Express and SATA auto-configuration utilities. The BIOS is stored in the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) Flash memory device.

The BIOS can be updated by following the instructions in Chapter 3 starting on page 69.

SATA Auto Configuration

If you install a SATA device (such as a hard disk drive) in your computer, the autoconfiguration utility in the BIOS automatically detects and configures the device for your computer. You do not need to run the BIOS Setup program after installing a SATA device. You can override the auto-configuration options by specifying manual configuration in the BIOS Setup program.

PCI*/PCI Express Auto Configuration

If you install a PCI or PCI Express add-in card in your computer, the PCI/PCI Express auto-configuration utility in the BIOS automatically detects and configures the resources (IRQs, DMA channels, and I/O space) for that add-in card. You do not need to run the BIOS Setup program after you install a PCI or PCI Express add-in card.

BIOS Security Passwords

The BIOS includes security features that restrict whether the BIOS Setup program can be accessed and who can boot the computer. A supervisor password and a user password can be set for the BIOS Setup and for booting the computer, with the following restrictions:

The supervisor password gives unrestricted access to view and change all Setup options. If only the supervisor password is set, pressing <Enter> at the password prompt of Setup gives the user restricted access to Setup.

If both the supervisor and user passwords are set, you must enter either the supervisor password or the user password to access Setup. Setup options are then available for viewing and changing depending on whether the supervisor or user password was entered.

Setting a user password restricts who can boot the computer. The password prompt is displayed before the computer is booted. If only the supervisor password is set, the computer boots without asking for a password. If both passwords are set, you can enter either password to boot the computer.

For instructions on resetting the password, go to Clearing Passwords on page 60.

Hard Disk Drive Passwords

The board’s Hard Disk Drive Password Security feature blocks read and write accesses to the hard disk drive until the correct password is entered. Hard disk drive passwords are set in BIOS Setup and are prompted for during the POST. For convenient support of ACPI S3 resume, the system BIOS automatically unlocks drives on resume from S3.

The User hard disk drive password, when set, will be required upon each power cycle until the Master Key or User hard disk drive password is entered.

The Master Key hard disk drive password, when set, will not lock the hard disk drive. The Master Key hard disk drive password is an unlock override that can be used in the event that the User hard disk drive password has been forgotten. Only the installation of the User hard disk drive password will cause a hard disk drive to be locked upon a system power cycle.

Table 4 shows the effects of setting the hard disk drive passwords.

During every POST, if a User hard disk drive password is set, POST execution will pause with the following prompt to force the user to enter the Master Key or User hard disk drive password:

Upon successful entry of the Master Key or User hard disk drive password, the system will continue with the normal POST.

If the hard disk drive password is not correctly entered, the system will go back to the above prompt. The user will have three attempts to correctly enter the hard disk drive password. After the third unsuccessful hard disk drive password attempt, the system will halt with the message:

Hard Disk Drive Password Entry Error

A manual power cycle will be required to resume system operation.

NOTE

On Intel Desktop Board DQ57TM, the Hard Disk Drive Password Security feature is only supported on SATA port 0. Since the passwords are stored on the hard disk drive, if the drive is relocated to another SATA port or computer that does not support the Hard Disk Drive Password Security feature, the drive will not be accessible.

NOTE

The Hard Disk Drive Password Security feature is not supported in PCH RAID mode. Secured hard disk drives attached to the system when the system is in PCH RAID mode will not be accessible due to the disabling of BIOS Hard Disk Drive Password support.

Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT)

Intel VT is a processor technology that enables a platform to run multiple operating systems and applications as independent machines, allowing one computer system to function as multiple "virtual" systems. It also provides the “assisted hardware virtualization” required by some operating systems for backward compatibility, such as Windows XP Mode for Microsoft Windows 7.

NOTE

Intel VT requires an Intel processor that supports Intel VT.

Intel® Trusted Execution Technology (Intel® TXT)

Intel TXT helps protect the platform against software-based attacks and preserves the confidentiality and integrity of the data created and stored on the system. It accomplishes this by using a measured launch and leveraging Intel VT to produce a protected environment for the execution of sensitive applications.

NOTE

Intel TXT requires an Intel processor that supports Intel TXT.

Intel® Remote PC Assist (Intel® RPAT) and Fast Call for Help

Intel RPAT provides a means for on-demand, reactive maintenance for small and medium businesses. Out of band, it is activated by pressing function key <F9> during the system POST. Optionally, an integrator may chose to connect an external button to the RPAT header that serves the same function. To utilize Intel RPAT technology from the desktop requires the installation of the Intel RPAT Client Agent, available for download from the Intel World Wide Web site.

Fast Call for Help supplies remote maintenance connectivity for the Enterprise user inside or outside the corporate firewall. Coupled with your enterprise’s Management Presence Server, it provides both reactive and proactive maintenance. Inside the firewall, this feature adapts Client Initiated Local Access (CILA); outside the firewall it uses Client Initiated Remote Access (CIRA). This service is triggered in the same manner as Intel RPAT.

Many of the features of Intel AMT are available with Intel RPAT and Fast Call for Help. These include Serial-over-LAN, IDE Redirection, KVM Redirection, and PC Alarm Clock.

NOTE

Intel RPAT requires an Intel vPro technology-enabled computer that has an Intel RPAT-enabled BIOS, a connection with a power source, and the Internet. This service operates via a wired LAN connection only and requires a direct Internet connection (no proxy server) with the ability to connect to external Internet locations (locations outside the local network). A remote service provider supporting Intel RPAT must be used to perform remote management. The Intel Remote PC Assist Wizard application and third party remote management software tools supporting Intel RPAT must be deployed on the target computer running one of the supported operating systems in order to perform remote management operations. Use of the technology may require configuration by the purchaser. Intel RPAT is not available in all locations or on all computer systems.

Trusted Platform Module (TPM)

The Nuvoton* WPCT210 TPM 1.2, revision 103 component on Intel Desktop Board DQ57TM is designed to enhance platform security above-and-beyond the capabilities of today’s software by providing a protected space for key operations and other security critical tasks. Using both hardware and software, the TPM protects encryption and signature keys at their most vulnerable stages—operations when the keys are being used unencrypted in plain-text form. The TPM is specifically designed to shield unencrypted keys and platform authentication information from software-based attacks.

For information about enabling and activating the TPM, refer to the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) Quick Reference Guide included with the board.

Fan Speed Control and Hardware Monitoring

The features of the hardware monitoring and fan speed control include:

Intel Quiet System Technology, delivering acoustically-optimized thermal management

Thermal sensors in the processor and the Intel PCH, as well as near the CPU voltage regulators and system memory

Monitoring of system voltages to detect levels above or below acceptable values
