IMPORTANT!
PROPER INT RUSION PR OTECTION
For proper intrusion coverage, sensor s should be loca ted at
every possible p oint of
entry
to a home or comm ercial premises. T his would include an y skylights that m ay
be present, and the upp er windows in a m ulti-level bui lding.
In addition, we recom mend that radio back up be used in a securit y system so that
alarm signals can s till be sent to th e Central Monitoring Station in the even t that the
telephone lines are out of order (alarm signals are normally sent over the ph one
lines).
EARLY WARNING FIRE DETECTION
Early warning fire detection is im portant in a hom e. Smoke and heat d etectors have
played a key role in red ucing fire deaths in the U nited States. With r egard to the
number and placement of smoke/heat detect ors, we subscribe to the
recommendations c ontained in the Nationa l Fire Protection Ass ociation's National
Fire Alarm Code (NFPA 7 2). These recomm endations can be found on pag e 47 of
this manual.

Zones and Partitions
• The system s ensing devic es have been assigned t o various “zon es,” which ar e
specific areas of protecti on (e.g., fron t door, kitch en window, e tc.).
• Zone numbers ar e displayed at th e keypad when an alarm or troubl e condition
occurs on a sensor.
• Partitions pr ovide two ind ependent area s of protec tion, with ea ch partition
containing a group of zones that can be armed and disarmed without affecting
other zones or users.
• Partitioned syst ems can include a comm on zone area, which i s an area shared by
users of both par titions (such as a lobby in a buil ding).
Arming, Step-Arming and Disarming Burglary Protection
• The system m ust be armed before the bur glary protecti on can sens e intrusions.
• To arm your sy stem, ent er your user c ode followed by the desir ed arming k ey.
• If programm ed, you can p ress the [#] key in place of your securi ty code when

sounder also sounds.
• If your system is connected to a Central Monitoring Station, an alarm message is
also sent. (Delayed Re porting Note: Message reporting is delayed 30 seconds
by default to reduce false alarms. If desired, this delay can be removed or can be
increased to 45 seconds. See your installer if you want the delay time changed.)
• To stop the alarm soundin g, simply disarm the sys tem.
Memory of Alarm
• When an alarm c ondition occ urs, the keyp ad display s the number(s) of the
zone(s) that caused the problem, and displays the type of alarm.
• The message r emains disp layed even af ter disarmin g the system, but can be
cleare d with a nother “o ff” seq uence.
Phone Access
• If included, a phone module permits you to access the system via a touch-tone
phone, either on-premis es or by call-in when away.

Entry/Exit Delays
Entry Delay
Entry Delays give you time to dis arm the system when you re-enter through the
designated en trance door. There are tw o entry delay s (if program med). The fi rst is for
your primary entranc e and the second can be used for a s econdary entrance, where a
longer delay is r equired to walk to the keypad to di sarm the system.
You must disarm th e system before the entry delay p eriod ends, or an a larm will
occur. The key pad beeps du ring the entry delay period , reminding y ou to disarm th e
system. The beep s stop wh en a code is enter ed, but will rest art after about 15 seconds
if an invalid code i s entered.
You can also arm the system with no entry delay at all by u sing the INSTAN T or
MAXIMUM arm ing modes. These modes pr ovide greater security whil e on the
premises or w hile away fo r extended p eriods of time .

Whenever y ou arm the sy stem, the exit delay begi ns. If an entry /exit door or interior
zone is faulted before exit delay expires and remains faulted (e.g. , exit door left open),
the system sound s an alarm and starts th e entry delay timer. If you disarm the
system befor e the entry d elay ends, th e alarm sound stops and th e message "ALA RM
CANCELED " or "CA" is displayed on the k eypad, along with a zone number
indicating the faulted zone. No message is sent to the Central Mo nitoring Station.
To clear the exit error condition, the open zone must be made intact; to cl ear the
display, enter your code plus OFF.
If you do not di sarm the syste m before the entry delay en ds and the faul ted zone
remains open, the alarm sound continue s and an "exit alarm" message is sent t o the
Central Monitoring Station (afte r the installer-programmed dial delay expires). T he
message "EXI T ALARM" or "E A" is display ed on the keyp ad, along wi th a zone
number indicatin g the faulted z one. To stop the alarm, the system must b e disarmed
(your code plus OFF); to clear the display, enter your code plus OFF a second time.
An “exit alarm” also results if an entry/exit door or in terior zone is f aulted within tw o
minutes after the end of t he exit delay.
Your system may have been programmed for this feature to minimize false alarms sent to the Central Monitoring
Station. Ask your installer if "Exit Alarm" is active i n your system. If so, check this box.
VISTA-21iPSIA: The Exit Error conditi on works the same as descri bed above, except that i n
addition to the “EXIT ALARM” message, a “zone alarm” messa ge is also sent to the Central
Monitoring Station. In addition, if an entr y/exit door or interior zone is faulted within t wo
minutes after the end of the exit delay, a “Recen t Closing” conditi on occurs instead of t he “exit
alarm.” Refer to the next paragraph for detai ls.
“Recent Closing” Condition (VISTA-21iPSIA)
A Recent Closing conditi on is similar to the Exi t Error condition describ ed above, but occurs if
an entry/exit door or i nterior zone is faul ted within two minutes after the initial exit delay
expires. If you dis arm the system withi n the two minutes, th e alarm sound stop s and the
message "ALARM CANCELED " or "CA" is displ ayed on the keypad, along with a zone number
indicating the faulted zone. No message is se nt to the Central Monitoring Station.
If you do not disarm th e system within two m inutes and the faul ted zone remains open , the
alarm sound continues and a “recent closing” and a “zone alarm” message are sent t o the
Central Monitoring St ation (after the installer-pr ogrammed dial delay expir es). The alarm
message along with a faulte d zone number is displayed on the keypad. To stop the alarm, the
system must be disarmed (your code plus O FF); to clear the display, enter your code plus OFF a
second time.
