Management of Change
Management of Change (MOC) is a procedure used to proactively manage changes that have the potential to impact safety or the process within a plant. Evaluating new techniques for improving MOC approval procedures can have an impact on plant efciency. Historically, upgrading obsolete products or replacing existing process control equipment had been delayed or abandoned due to the extensive paperwork involved in completing a complex MOC approval sheet.

Background

Bettis RPE Actuators

Emerson Automation Solutions offers the Bettis RPE Series actuator, a robust workhorse actuator design for long life even in harsh environments. The RPE Series actuator has a heavy-duty cast construction and polyurethane coating for excellent
corrosion resistance.

The RPE Series actuator can be installed on rotary-shaft valve bodies for throttling or on-off applications. Dual ISO 5211 mounting patterns allow low-prole direct mounting to valves. Drive inserts on the valve ange make direct mounting exible, either for square, at head, or round with key way stems. It offers a VDI/VDE 3845 (NAMUR) solenoid interface and top accessory interface.
The high-grade aluminum pinion on Bettis RPE Series actuator provides the best combination of corrosion resistance, high strength, and a lightweight construction as well as providing protection against galvanic corrosion. One-piece blow-out proof, pressure balanced, pinion allows safe in-eld re-conguration from Fail-Close to Fail-Open. Precision dual stroke adjustment provides accurate and intuitive end of stroke adjustment for the Open and Closed valve position.

FieldQ Actuators

The FieldQ (and Bettis Q-Series) is designed to be an actuator with integrated control modules. For customers that wanted to use the FieldQ actuator without the integrated control module, the actuator was available with an optional NAMUR
adaptation plate. This adapter plate offers the customer a solenoid interface
according to the VDE/VDI3845 (NAMUR) standard.

Converting from FieldQ to Bettis RPE Actuators

Bettis RPE Series actuators can directly replace FieldQ Series actuators with the NAMUR adaptation plate for valve automation for most applications.
If the FieldQ actuator was tted with integrated control modules, then we recommend staying with the FieldQ brand or move to the Bettis Q-Series.

Comparison of FieldQ Actuators with NAMUR Adaptation Plate to Bettis RPE Actuators

The Bettis RPE Series actuator can be a direct replacement for the FieldQ actuator with NAMUR adaptation plate. These actuators offer the same form, t, and function. While these actuators have slight design differences, noted below, they both achieve the same torque output to turn the valve and are suitable for use in the same applications. (Note, there are minor torque differences only for the two largest FieldQ actuator sizes.)
The Bettis RPE actuator offers an extended torque range compared to FieldQ, allowing the product line to cover more valve applications.

Torque Range Differences

The Bettis RPE actuator offers 3 additional models sizes compared to FieldQ actuator, allowing Bettis RPE to cover a wider range of valve applications.
MOC: Bettis RPE Series Actuators
March 2020
D353063X012
The torque output of comparable sizes is the same for sizes 40 to 600. Therefore, as an example, a FieldQ actuator size Q100 with spring set 4 can be replaced with a new Bettis RPE Series size 100 with spring set 40.
However, when replacing FieldQ sizes Q950 and Q1600 with Bettis RPE Series, we recommend discussing with your Emerson sales ofce which spring set should be selected. It is possible that you will need to select a larger spring set to achieve the required torque output. Reference the Bettis RPE-Series product data sheet to view torque tables.

Actuator Sizing

With the new torque gures for the Bettis RPE actuator, we have resized all the applicable valves and updated all the actuator to valve mappings available in
Catalog 14.

QC Control Modules

The FieldQ actuator is designed to be used with special “QC Control Modules,” which contain all the required controls to operate the automated valve. The FieldQ actuator may also be used without the control modules by installing a NAMUR adapter plate. This adapter plate allows the user to direct mount a NAMUR solenoid
to the actuator or to direct pipe air to the actuator.

Weights and Dimensions

The below comparison shows that many dimensions for Bettis RPE actuator decreased versus the FieldQ actuator. Where dimensions increased, it is only a marginal increase. In most applications, site clearances will not prohibit the replacement of a FieldQ actuator with the Bettis RPE Series actuator.
