Introduction

Congratulations on purchasing the Fender® TBP-1 Tube Bass Preamp. This product is designed to deliver creamy tube tone that is thick, natural and balanced for both live and studio applications. By combining a Fender® passive tone stack with modern features like our Vari-Q™ semi-parametric EQ circuit, Room Balance for your stage cabinets, and an independent Tube Overdrive section, you now have the best of the old and the new in a single rack space with a 4-button footswitch to control it all.

What makes the TBP-1 special?

The passive tone circuit in the TBP-1 is the same one used in such classic Fender® amps as the Twin Reverb® and Dual Showman®. This “cut-only” passive circuit means that the EQ controls are close to being “flat” when set Bass: 2, Mid: 10, Treble: 2. Although you are able to make tonal changes, you may notice it doesn’t react the same as a typical solid-state front end. The passive circuit feels integrated, with the Volume and EQ controls affecting each other. A solidstate amp has a pre-defined shape with an active EQ (typically allowing cut or boost as much as 15dB). This difference takes a little while for some bass players to get used to, but the tonal character of the passive circuit feels right immediately!

The TBP-1 can be used in the following ways:

Bi-Amped Bass Rig (Separate power amps and speaker cabinets dedicated to lows and highs independently)

1.Use guitar (shielded) cables to connect the high frequency output and the low frequency output to a stereo power amp (or two mono power amps). Use speaker (unshielded) cables to connect each side of the power amp (or from each individual power amp) to the appropriate speaker cabinets

2.Use the Active Crossover to select the frequency cross-over point

3.Any frequencies higher than the selected crossover point will be sent to speakers assigned to the higher frequencies

4.Any frequencies lower than the selected crossover point will be sent to speakers assigned to the lower frequencies

5.This is what is called a Bi-amped rig (bimeaning “two”). The advantage of this setup is its ability to be more efficient with the signal and the player’s ability to hear specific ranges of sound coming through specific speakers (example: sending high frequencies to a cabinet with 10’s and low frequencies to a cabinet with a 15)

6.The result is less unwanted distortion as high frequencies do not have to compete for headroom with low frequencies

Normal Full-Range Rig

1.Connect the TBP-1 Main Output to the input of a power amp

2.Run speaker cables from the power amp to the cabinet(s) and GO!

Replacing the Pre-Amp Tone of an Existing Rig

1.Connect the TBP-1 Main Output to the Effects Loop Return of a combo or head

2.The power section of the combo or head is now powering the TBP-1

3.The pre-amp of the combo or head is not part of the sound

4.This is a simple way to add the tone of the TBP-1 to an existing bass rig

Studio Recording Pre-Amp

1.Run a BALANCED LINE OUT (microphone) cable from the back of the TBP-1 to a recording device

2.Choose POST on the BALANCED LINE OUT so the EQ changes are included in the output signal

3.Jensen® line out transformer keeps signal clean and strong

8 F ro n t P a n e l

A.INPUT - Plug your bass in here. NOTE: This jack overrides the rear panel Input jack {EE}.

B.–6 dB PAD - Reduces the Input sensitivity to allow cleaner response with high-output bass guitars.

C.VOLUME - Adjusts the loudness of the Vintage Tube Tone.

D.BASS / MID / TREBLE - Classic, cut only tone stack. Pull the Bass knob out for a boost in the lowfrequency range. Pull the Treble knob out for a boost in the high-frequency range. Bright boost is more apparent at mid settings of the Volume control {C}.

E.ENABLE - Switches the Tube Overdrive section on/off as indicated by the LED. Keep button out for proper operation of the included footswitch.

F.GAIN - Adjusts the Tube Overdrive distortion level.

G.VOLUME - Adjusts the loudness of the Tube Overdrive sound along with the Gain control {F}.

H.BLEND - Adjusts the mix of clean vintage tube tone with overdriven tube tone when the Tube Overdrive is enabled.

I.ENABLE - Switches the Vari-Q™ semi-parametric EQ section on/off as indicated by the LED. Keep button out for proper operation of the included footswitch.

J.FREQ - Selects the center of frequency range that the Level control {K} adjusts. NOTE: This knob has no effect when Level is at “0.”

K.LEVEL - Adjusts the amount of boost or cut (±15dB) at the frequency selected by the Freq control {J}. Also adjusts the width or “Q” of the frequency response as appropriate. In the boost mode, the “Q” is automatically set wider, which is more generally perceived as musically pleasing. In the cut mode, the “Q” is narrow, useful to eliminate a problem frequency, hum or resonance.

L.ROOM BALANCE - Room Balance is for the player to “dial in the room” as a final touch of EQ. This feature is OFF when in the center position (start the EQ process with this control centered; dial it in last). Turning the control clockwise emphasizes highs, while de-emphasizing lows (great if the stage sound is dark and muddy). Turning the control counter-clockwise creates the opposite effect; emphasizing lows while de-emphasizing highs (helps with bright hardwood floors). This frees up the EQ of the TBP-1 to design your TONE instead of compensating for poor room acoustics.

M.MASTER VOLUME- Adjusts the overall loudness of the TBP-1 in conjunction with the Gain and Volume controls of active sections.

N.MUTE - Disables all TBP-1 outputs (except for the Tuner and FX Loop Send jacks) as indicated by the blinking LED. Keep button out for proper operation of the included footswitch.

O.POWER - Switches the TBP-1 on/off as indicated by the LED.

www.f e n d e r.com www. m r g e a r h e a d .net

R e a r P a n e l 9

P.IEC POWER SOCKET - Connect the included power cord to a grounded AC receptacle in compliance with the voltage and frequency ratings specified on the rear panel of your TBP-1.

Q.FOOTSW - Connect the included footswitch to enable remote on/off switching of Tube Overdrive, FX Loop, Vari-Q™ and Mute. NOTE: For proper operation, front panel switches {E}, {I} and {N} must each be left in the out, non-enabled position.

R.LF OUT - Low frequency output for bi-amping.

S.BALANCE - Adjusts the balance between the LF Out and HF Out when bi-amping.

T.HF OUT - High frequency output for bi-amping.

U.FREQUENCY - Adjusts the crossover frequency when bi-amping.

V.MAIN OUTPUT - Full-range output for connecting to a power amp input or to a bass amp Return jack.

W.GND / LIFT - The Ground Lift switch should normally be in the Ground (out) position. In the Lift (in) position, the ground connection (pin-1) of the Balanced Line Out jack {X} is disconnected from the chassis, which may reduce hum noise in some situations.

X.BALANCED LINE OUT - This jack allows you to send a Jensen™ transformer isolated, hum-free signal from the TBP-1 to external equipment (such as a house mixing console or a recording device).

Y.LEVEL - Adjusts the output level of the Balanced Line Output jack {X}.

Z.PRE / POST - Use this control to select if you would prefer the bass signal from the Balanced Line Output {X} to be affected by the EQ changes you make (post) or before the EQ, to give an unaffected signal (pre).

AA.TRIM - Adjust to compensate for external effects devices volume difference when FX Loop is selected with included footswitch. Full clockwise rotation provides a +6dB boost, while full counterclockwise provides a -6dB cut. Also useful for a footswitchable solo boost (clockwise rotation) when not using external effects.

BB.–10dBV / +4dBu - FX Loop level. Sets nominal operating level for external effects. Use +4dBu for professional rack-style effects. Use -10dBV for battery operated pedal effects.

CC.RETURN / SEND - FX Loop jacks for external effects. Connect Send to the input of your effects device and Return to the output of your effects device.

DD.TUNER - Connection for your bass tuner. Use the Mute switch {N} while tuning, if desired.

EE.INPUT - Alternate connection for bass guitar signal. Useful in some rack configurations. NOTE: Front panel Input jack overrides this jack.

NOTE: Jacks {R}, {T}, {V}, {CC} and {DD} are balanced TRS (Tip/Ring/Sleeve) types, with tip=positive (+), ring=negative (–) and sleeve=ground (GND). While standard sheilded TS (Tip/Sleeve) “mono” guitar cables may certainly be used, the use of “stereo” TRS cables, when available, may improve signal-to-noise ratio and/or reduce hum.
