xi How the RIP Station works

Before You Begin

The RIP Station enables you to use the printer as a high speed, networked printer. You can print documents from your computer as you would to any other printer on the network—you select it from the Printers dialog box (for Windows-based computers) or the Chooser (for Mac™ OS™-based computers)—and then print from within any application.
You can print to the RIP Station from networked Windows and Mac OS computers. In addition, you can use the parallel port to print directly from Windows computers.
How the RIP Station works
The RIP Station is a special-purpose controller that enables you to print to the printer by connecting it to networked computers. The RIP Station receives files from computers on the network, processes (RIPs) those files, and then sends them to the printer’s print engine.
Windows and Mac OS computers communicate with the RIP Station by means of a PostScript printer driver and PPDs (PostScript printer description files). The printer driver and PPDs enable you to use all the special features of the RIP Station from the Print dialog box.

Chapter 2: Printing with Windows Computers

This chapter describes how to print to the RIP Station from a Windows computer using the Adobe PostScript Printer Driver (provided with the RIP Station user software). You can print files from within your Windows application to the RIP Station connected on your network. You can also print to the parallel port on the RIP Station from a laptop computer, a desktop computer, or a Novell server.
If you prepare files to print at a remote location, such as a service bureau, set up your Windows printer to print to the File port. You can still specify the RIP Station print settings when you create your file. This ensures that when the file is finally printed, you get the same quality output as if you had printed the files yourself. You can also print to the File port to create a file to be downloaded with Fiery Downloader.
For information on setting up the Windows environment for printing with Windows servers connected to the RIP Station, see the Administrator Guide. For information on how to connect to the RIP Station over the network, install printer drivers, and install the Fiery utilities, see the Setup Guide. For more information on setting up and using the printer, see the EPSON Stylus Pro 5000 Printer Guide.
Once you have installed the printer driver and set it to the proper port as described in the Setup Guide, you can print directly from Windows applications. Choose the Print command from within your application.

Setting print options

Once you have installed the appropriate PostScript Printer Driver and RIP Station PPD (PostScript printer description file), you can select the printer settings you prefer. You can also change some of these settings from within an application when you print a job to the RIP Station.
To achieve the best printing results from specific applications, see the Color Printing Guide.

To set print options for a job, you need to change the printer driver properties. You can access the printer driver properties in several ways. For example, with many applications you can access the properties from the print dialog box. The procedures in the following sections describe how to set print options by changing the properties of the printer driver in the Windows control panel.

Printing with Windows 95

To print from Windows 95 applications over a network, you must be connected to a print server. This can be a Novell NetWare server, an NT server, or a UNIX server. For information about connecting a server to the RIP Station, see the Administrator Guide.
You can print from Windows 95 with the Adobe PostScript printer driver for Windows included with the RIP Station user software.
TO CHANGE THE PRINTER SETUP WITH THE ADOBE POSTSCRIPT PRINTER DRIVER FOR WINDOWS 95:
1. Double-click the My Computer icon.
2. Double-click the Printers icon.
3. Select the icon for the Fiery LX Stylus Pro 5000.

6. Click the Fiery Options tab and choose the appropriate settings.
For best performance, it is recommended to use portrait orientation. If you print landscape images, rotate them within the application.
NOTE: If media loaded in the selected tray is a different size, orientation, or media type
than that of the job you are sending, the RIP Station displays an error message and the job will not print. You should then load the correct media in the selected tray or cancel the job.
The options in this dialog box are specific to the RIP Station. They override settings in Printer Setup on the RIP Station Control Panel; you can also override some of these settings in the Fiery Spooler or WebSpooler Override Print Settings dialog box. For information about these options and overrides, see Appendix A, “Print Options.”
If you choose Printer’s default, the RIP Station prints with the information entered during RIP Station Setup.
7. If you want to make the new settings your default settings, click Apply.
8. Click OK to activate the current settings.
