DX Engineering Switch Pad 8 Transceiver External Keypad (DXE-SWP8) is an eight button
keypad for use with specific Kenwood and Icom transceiver models.
For specific Kenwood transceivers, in addition to voice memory
keyer access, the DXE-SWP8 can also access a full
complement of 99 Personal Functions as described in the
Kenwood transceiver’s manuals.
With specific Icom transceivers, it provides a method of
selecting Voice, CW, RTTY and PSK keying memories without
the need to access the keyer menu on the transceiver's main
touch screen. This prevents the reduction of the functionality of
the main screen during contesting. It also enhances transceiver keyer memory access without the
need to integrate the radio with a computer program.
This convenient keypad connects to the 3.5 mm jack used for an external keypad on these
transceivers:
Refer to your transceiver’s manual for full functional details of using an external keypad.
Features

Engineering website for updates and any DXE-SWP8 manual revisions.
Manual Updates and Information

Setting the Internal Jumpers
There are two internal jumpers that need to be set for the brand of transceiver you are using.
Open the DXE-SWP8 by removing the screws on the case to gain access to the two internal
jumpers.
The two jumpers are labeled KWD ICM (KWD = Kenwood ICM = Icom)
Set BOTH jumpers to the transceiver brand you are using: KENWOOD or ICOM. Once the
jumpers are set, close the DXE-SWP8. If both jumpers are not set properly, the switch positions
will be wrong.

Using the DXE-SWP8 with Kenwood
When the two internal jumpers are set for KWD, the DXE-SWP8 only works properly with the
Kenwood TS-890 or Kenwood TS-990S.
Future Kenwood transceivers may work with the DXE-SWP8 - Check the DX Engineering website
for updates and any DXE-SWP8 manual revisions.
The following example is shown using
a TS-990S. You will be able to program
eight out going messages or a
combination of messages and functions
short cut buttons. The other Kenwood
model is similar in operation. Use the
Kenwood Manual for specific
instructions on setting up the External
Keypad and programming functions.
The DXE-SWP8 plugs into the rear of the Kenwood TS-990S into the jack labeled KEYPAD. This
is shown in the Kenwood TS-990S Manual (version EN 1.01).
The TS-990S needs to be set up to turn on the various
functions that the external keypad is capable of
performing. Information about that is in the Icom TS-990S
manual.
Once set up, the eight switches on the DXE-SWP8 can be
programmed with the desired outgoing messages or radio
functions.
The information presented in this manual is not complete
for the various radio models to avoid conflicts with any
revisions that Icom makes. Always refer to your latest
ICOM transceiver manual for complete up-to-date details.
When using the DXE-SWP8 with the Kenwood TS-990S
you have a choice of 99 different functions to assign to the
eight switches on the DXE-SWP8. The functions range
from sending out going voice messages (which is what is
used most often during a contest) to specific radio
functions at a touch of a button. Refer to section 16 in the
TS-990S manual (version EN 1.01) for complete details.
When you program the buttons on the DXE-SWP8, you may want to make a small chart so you
remember what the function buttons are set for.

Using the DXE-SWP8 with ICOM
When the two internal jumpers are set for ICM, the DXE-SWP8 only works properly with the Icom
IC-7610, IC-7850 or IC-7851.
Future Icom transceivers may work with the DXE-SWP8 - Check the DX Engineering website for
updates and any DXE-SWP8 manual revisions.
The following example is shown
using an IC-7610. You will be
able to program eight out going
messages. The other Icom models
are similar in operation. Use the
Icom Manual for specific
instructions on setting up the
External Keypad and
programming memories.
The DXE-SWP8 plugs into the rear of the Icom IC-7610 into the jack labeled EXT KEYPAD. This
is shown as connector item 18 in the ICOM IC-7610 Basic Manual (version A7380D-1EX-2).
The IC-7610 MENU needs to be accessed to turn on the
external keypad. Information about that is in the Icom IC7610 manual.
Once set up, the eight switches on the DXE-SWP8 can be
programmed with the desired outgoing messages.
For example: To program voice messages, refer to the IC7610 basic manual in the section entitled “ VOICE TX
MEMORY OPERATION”. Likewise, refer to the manual
when programming in CW, RTTY or PSK messages as well.
The information presented in this manual is not complete for
the various radio models to avoid conflicts with any revisions
that Icom makes. Always refer to your latest ICOM transceiver manual for complete up-to-date
details.
When you program the buttons on the DXE-SWP8, you may want to make a small chart so you
remember what the function buttons are set for.
