WORK AREA

Keep your work area clean and well lit. Cluttered benches and dark areas invite accidents.

Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.

Keep bystanders, children, and visitors away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY

Grounded tools must be plugged into an outlet properly installed and grounded in accordance with all codes and ordinances. Never remove the grounding prong or modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adaptor plugs. Check with a qualified electician if you are in doubt as to whether the outlet is properly grounded. If the tools should electrically malfunction or break down, grounding provides a low resistance path to carry electricity away from the user. Applicable only to Class I (grounded) tools.

Double insulated tools are equipped with a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the

other.) This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install a polarized outlet. Do not change the plug in any way. Double insulation eliminates the need for the three wire grounded power cord and grounded power supply system.

Applicable only to Class II (double insulated) tools.

Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is grounded.

Don’t expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.

Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord to carry the tools or pull the plug from an outlet. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Replace damaged cords immediately. Damaged cords increase the risk of electric shock.

Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection must be used for appropriate conditions.

TOOL USE AND CARE

Use clamps or other practical way to secure and support the workpiece to a stable platform. Holding the work by hand or against your body is unstable and may lead to loss of control.

Do not force tool. Use the correct tool for your application. The correct tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it is designed.

Do not use tool if switch does not turn it on or off. Any tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.

Disconnect the plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the tool. Such preventative safety measures reduce the risk of starting the tool accidentally.

Store idle tools out of reach of children and other untrained persons. Tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.

Maintain tools with care. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained tools, with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.

Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the tools operation. If damaged, have the tool serviced before using. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained tools.

Use only accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for your model.

Accessories that may be suitable for one tool, may become hazardous when used on another tool.

SERVICE

Tool service must be performed only by qualified repair personnel. Service or maintenance performed by unqualified personnel could result in a risk of injury.

When servicing a tool, use only identical replacement parts. Follow instructions in the Maintenance section of this manual. Use of unauthorized parts or failure to follow Maintenance Instructions may create a risk of electric shock or injury.

Additional Specific Safety Instructions

Hold tool by insulated gripping surfaces when performing an operation where the cutting tool may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Contact with a “live” wire will make exposed metal parts of the tool “live” and shock the operator.

Allow the motor to come to a complete stop before withdrawing the blade from the kerf (the slot created by cutting). A moving blade may impact the workpiece causing a broken blade, workpiece damage or loss of control and possible personal injury.

Keep handles dry, clean, free from oil and grease. This will enable better control of the tool.

Keep blades sharp. Dull blades may cause the saw to swerve or stall under pressure.

CAUTION: Wear appropriate personal hearing protection during use. Under some conditions and duration of use, noise from this product may contribute to hearing loss.

WARNING: Some dust created by power sanding, sawing, grinding, drilling, and other construction activities contains chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these chemicals are:

lead from lead-based paints,

crystalline silica from bricks and cement and other masonry products, and

arsenic and chromium from chemically-treated lumber (CCA).

Your risk from these exposures varies, depending on how often you do this type of work. To reduce your exposure to these chemicals: work in a well ventilated area, and work with approved safety equipment, such as those dust masks that are specially designed to filter out microscopic particles.

Avoid prolonged contact with sawdust from treated lumber. Do not allow dust to get into your mouth, eyes or lay on the skin. Wear protective clothing whenever possible.

Motor

Your DEWALT tool is powered by a DEWALT-built motor. Be sure your power supply agrees with the nameplate markings.

Volts 50/60 Hz or “AC only” means your tool must be operated only with alternating current and never with direct current. Volts DC-60 Hz or AC/DC means your tool may be operated with either alternating or direct current.

Voltage decrease of more than 10% will cause loss of power and overheating. All DEWALT tools are factory tested; if this tool does not operate, check the power supply.

Variable Speed Switch (Fig. 1)

This switch has a button “A”, mounted in the trigger, which can be rotated to vary the blade stroke speed.

(a)For “Free Hand” speed control (the further the trigger is pulled, the higher the S.P.M.) rotate the button to the 7 position (clockwise).

(b)To set the trigger switch to produce a selected speed each time the trigger is squeezed, first rotate the button toward 7 until it stops. Then fully depress the trigger, press the locking button “B”, and release the trigger. The tool will stay ON. Now, rotate the button “A” toward the 1 and you will notice a decrease in speed. Continue rotating the button until the desired speed is reached. Pull the trigger and release to turn the tool OFF. At this setting the saw will run at the selected speed each time the trigger is pulled and the trigger may be locked ON at the selected speed.

Variable Speed Switch (DW323) (Fig. 2)

This tool has a button “A,” which can be rotated to vary the blade strokes-per-minute (S.P.M.) To turn the tool ON, slide the switch (B) forward. To lock the switch ON, slide the switch in the two notches in the saw’s housing and release the trigger (Fig.2A). Rotate button “A” to reach the desired speed. Press the flat, rear edge of the trigger to unlock the trigger and turn the tool OFF.

Dust Blower (Fig. 3)

Your jigsaw is equipped with a dust blower to clear the cutting area of debris created by the blade. To turn the blower on, slide the switch to the top position. To turn the blower off, slide the switch to the bottom position.

When operating a power tool outside, use an outdoor extension cord marked “W-A” Removeable Shoe Cover (Fig. 4) or “W.” These cords are rated for outdoor use and reduce the risk of electric shock.

PERSONAL SAFETY

Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use tool while tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury,

Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Contain long hair. Keep your hair, clothing , and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry, or long hair can be caught in moving parts. Air vents cover moving parts and should be avoided.

Avoid accidental starting. Be sure switch is off before plugging in. Carrying tools with your finger on the switch or plugging in tools that have the switch on invites accidents.

Remove adjusting keys or wrenches before turning the tool on. A wrench or a key that is left attached to a rotating part of the tool may result in personal injury.

Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Proper footing and balance enables better control of the tool in unexpected situations.

Your jig saw includes a removeable plastic shoe cover. Use this cover when cutting surfaces that scratch easily, such as paint, laminate or veneer. Put the shoe on as shown in Fig. 4. Slide the cover to the rear to ensure that the two tabs (A) shown lock on the shoe.

Straight Line or Orbital Cutting Action (Fig. 5)

For cutting softer materials your jig saw features orbital cutting action. Soft materials, like wood and plastic, permit deep penetration of individual saw teeth. The orbital action set on 3 thrusts the blade forward on the cutting stroke and greatly increases cutting speed over conventional jig saws. Harder materials like metal should be cut using the straight line cutting action (0) or a very low orbital setting. To select straight line or orbital cutting adjust the lever (A) on the saw as shown.

Bevel Cutting Adjustment (Fig. 6 & 7)

Bevel cuts may be made at any angle between 0° and 45°.

TO ADJUST THE SHOE:

a.Lift the shoe lever on the bottom of the tool (A).

b.Align the arrow on the housing wdith the line on the shoe Fig. 7.

c.Rotate the shoe to the desired angle.

After setting the shoe, tighten it by returning the shoe lever to its oringinal position.

NOTE: The shoe will be difficult to bevel at first. Ensure the shoe lever is up and the two arrows shown are aligned. Gently rock the shoe from side to side to loosen.

At 0˚, the shoe may slide back to allow for cutting in tight work areas. Lift the shoe lever, slide the shoe back and depress the lever to lock. If necessary tighten the shoe lever with the screw (B).

Attaching Blades (Fig. 8)

UNPLUG TOOL. Insert any universal or “T” shank jig saw blade inthe the chuck. Make sure the back edge of the blade fits into the support roller. Lift knob approximately 1/4” as shown. Maintain tension on the knob and rotate it clockwise several revolutions until it clicks or gets tight. Do not over tighten. Only moderate pressure is necessary. To remove blades, lift and turn knob counterclockwise 2 or 3 revolutions. For “T” shank blades, insert blade to the shoulder of the shank.

Pocket Cutting (Fig. 9)

A pocket cut is an easy method of making an inside cut. The saw can be inserted directly into a panel or board without first drilling a lead or pilot hole. In pocket cutting measure the surface to be cut and mark clearly with a pencil. Be sure the shoe is extended forward. Next tip the saw forward until the front end of the shoe sits firmly on the work surface and the blade clears the work through its full stroke. Switch the tool on and allow it to attain maximum speed. Grip the saw firmly and lower the back edge of tool slowly until the blade reaches its complete depth. Hold the shoe flat against the wood and begin cutting. Do not remove blade from cut while it is still moving. Blade must come to a complete stop.

Wood Cutting

Be sure board is firmly positioned. Don’t attempt to turn on when blade is against material to be cut. This could stall the motor. Place front of shoe on material to be cut and hold jig saw shoe firmly against the wood while cutting. Don’t force the tool; let the blade cut at its own speed. Whenever possible, clamp or support work close to the line of cut; when the cut is completed, shut off power, let blade come to a complete stop and then lay the saw aside before loosening the work. Use the higher speed setting for cutting wood.

Metal Cutting

In cutting thin gauge sheet metals, it is best to clamp wood or plywood to the bottom of sheet metal; this will insure a clean cut without the danger of vibration or tearing of metal. Always remember to use a finer blade for ferrous metals (for those that have a high iron content); and use a coarser blade for non-ferrous metals (those that do not have an iron content). Use a high speed setting for cutting soft metals (aluminum, copper, brass, mild steel, gallvanized. pipe, conduit sheet metal, etc.). Use lower speed to cut plastics, tile, Formica, hard metals, cast iron.

Lubrication

It is recommended that, at least once a year, you take or send the tool to a service center for a thorough cleaning, inspection and lubrication of the gear case.

CONSERVER CES MESURES

AIRE DE TRAVAIL

Veillez à ce que l’aire de travail soit propre et bien éclairée. Le désordre et le manque de lumière favorisent les accidents.

N’utilisez pas d’outils électriques dans une atmosphère explosive, par exemple en présence de liquides, de gaz ou de poussières inflammables. Les outils électriques créent des étincelles qui pourraient enflammer les poussières ou les vapeurs.

Tenez à distance les curieux, les enfants et les visiteurs pendant que vous travaillez avec un outil électrique. Ils pourraient vous distraire et vous faire faire une fausse manoeuvre.

SÉCURITÉ ÉLECTRIQUE

Les outils avec mise à la terre doivent être branchés dans une prise bien installée et mise à la terre conformément aux codes et ordonnances. N'enlevez jamais la broche de terre et ne modifiez pas la fiche d'une manière quelconque. N'utilisez pas d'adaptateur de fiche. Vérifiez avec un électricien qualifié en cas de doute sur le branchement à la terre de la prise. Si elle n'entre pas dans la prise, retournez-la. Si le problème persiste, demandez à un électricien qualifié d'installer une prise polarisée. Ne modifiez jamais la fiche. La double isolation élimine le besoin d’un cordon d’alimentation à trois fils avec mise à la terre ainsi que d’une prise de courant mise à la terre. Applicable seulement aux outils de classe II (à double isolation).

Évitez tout contact corporel avec des surfaces mises à la terre tuyauterie, radiateurs, cuisinières, réfrigérateurs. Le risque de choc électrique est plus grand si votre corps est en contact avec la terre.

N’exposez pas les outils électriques à la pluie ou à l’eau. La présence d’eau dans un outil électrique augmente le risque de choc électrique.

Ne maltraitez pas le cordon. Ne transportez pas l’outil par son cordon et ne débranchez pas la fiche en tirant sur le cordon. N’exposez pas le cordon à la chaleur, à des huiles, à des arêtes vives ou à des pièces en mouvement. Remplacez immédiatement un cordon endommagé. Un cordon endommagé augmente le risque d'électrocution.

Lorsque vous utilisez un outil électrique à l’extérieur, employez un prolongateur pour l’extérieur marqué “W-A” ou “W”. Ces cordons sont prévus pour l’usage à l’extérieur et réduisent le risque d’électrocution.

SÉCURITÉ DES PERSONNES

Restez alerte, concentrez-vous sur votre travail et faites preuve de jugement. N’utilisez pas un outil électrique si vous êtes fatigué ou sous l’influence de drogues, d’alcool ou de médicaments. Un instant d’inattention suffit pour entraîner des blessures graves.

Habillez-vous convenablement. Ne portez pas de vêtements ou de bijoux lâches. Confinez les cheveux longs. N’approchez jamais les cheveux, les vêtements ou les gants des pièces en mouvement. Des vêtements flottants, des bijoux ou des cheveux longs risquent d’être happés par des pièces en mouvement.

Méfiez-vous d’un démarrage accidentel. Avant de brancher l’outil, assurez-vous que son interrupteur est sur ARRÊT. Le transport d'un outil avec le doigt sur la détente ou le branchement d'un outil avec l’interrupteur à la position MARCHE peut mener tout droit à un accident.

Enlevez les clés de réglage ou de serrage avant de démarrer l’outil. Une clé laissée dans un pièce tournante de l’outil peut provoquer des blessures.

Ne vous penchez pas trop en avant. Tenez-vous bien d'aplomb sur vos pieds pour garder votre équilibre en tout temps. Un bonne stabilité vous permet de mieux réagir à une situation inattendue.

Utilisez des accessoires de sécurité. Portez toujours des lunettes de sécurité. Selon les conditions, portez aussi un masque antipoussière, des bottes de sécurité antidérapantes, un casque protecteur et/ou un appareil antibruit.

UTILISATION ET ENTRETIEN DES OUTILS

Immobilisez le matériau sur une surface stable au moyen de brides ou de toute autre façon adéquate. Le fait de tenir la pièce avec la main ou contre votre corps offre un stabilité insuffisante et peut amener un dérapage de l’outil.

Ne forcez pas l’outil. Utilisez l’outil approprié à la tâche. L’outil correct fonctionne mieux et de façon plus sécuritaire. Respectez aussi la vitesse de travail qui lui est propre.
